- Arthurian Movies: I really enjoy the basic legend of Camelot. It's one of the five or six "core stories" that really inform so much of our modern fiction. That being said, I can't say I've ever really been satisfied with any cinematic adaptation. Whether it be the overacting in "Excalibur," the anachronistic and somewhat childish take in "Merlin," the revisionism in "Mists of Avalon" or the summer of love vibe in "Camelot," I always come away wishing they had been slightly... better.

- Natalie Portman: I find her to be very beautiful. Every time I see or hear an interview she seems very intelligent. She's been in quite a few of my favorite films. And yet... I really don't enjoy her acting. She always seems somewhat bored and disaffected. It's odd, I always find myself rooting for her to turn in a better performance. I want to like her, but she makes it somewhat difficult.

- White Wine: I enjoy wine with a meal. Being half Italian it's almost in my blood to do so. But, try as I might, I have never been able to get a taste for whites. I find them either too sweet or too dry, with no middle ground. I'm not a culinary snob, but I do have a sense about what beverage would "go" with a certain meal, and it always bugs me that when I know white wine would go perfectly, I'm more apt to just go with water.

- My own facial hair: This one's quick. During the winter I usually grow a beard, but there is one spot in the shape of an "L" on my left cheek that just doesn't grow in. It always looks stupid, and I wish it were better.

I felt the same about white wine until I discovered Ferarri Carano Chardonnay.
It's billed as "a chardonnay for people who HATE chardonnay".
I'd describe it as almost buttery, with none of that oakiness or acidity of many white wines.
It's a bit fruity, but nowhere near sweet.
It's pretty inexpensive too!!

Funny how things just tasted better when we were young

KFC. I like the way it tastes, but it always makes me kinda ill when I'm done. I wish they could take the ick out of finger lickin' good.

One of the coffee shops I like to visit on my way to work. The coffee and treats are awesome, but the place is crawling with perky young hipsters. The server is always all over these people, but just kind of grunts at my middle-aged, dressed-to-scuffle self.

I don't expect fawning and flowers, but-- jeez. My money's green, too. A simple "good morning" and/or "thanks for the tip, you old bat" would be nice once in a while. [sulk]

I never eat KFC anymore. If I want cheap, greasy chicken, I'll go the Church's. If I want slightly better and more expensive chicken, I'll go to Popeye's.

Agree on KFC. There is a lot to like but it could be slightly better--particularly on the greasiness scale. I only order once in a blue moon.

Other things:

The Twilight Series - I *like* it, but I wish it had a little more oomph to it. Something else else to really push it over the top. As it stands, I read the first novel and I think I'm done. Unlike the Harry Potter novels, which were just the bee's knees.

Arthurian Movies - totally agree with you, Ex! I wish we could see a really great one done. There have been some pretty good ones (the recent Clive Owen one was worth watching) but none that really blew me away.

Newstand / Convenience Stores / 24 hour stores - there is so many things in there you would want to grab, but why does everyone make me feel like I'm walking into the creepiest, shadiest part of the entire block? I feel like only pimps, hookers and serial killers go in there and all I want is a paper, an Almond Joy and a lottery ticket. Jeepers! Class it up a little! It doesn't need to be the Hilton Hotel, just maybe put in some wood paneling or something. laugh

Oddly enough, the guy they had at the counter yesterday was nearly sociable. He must be too new for the hipster brigade and/or bosses to have trained him in the ways of the world yet.

"Hipsters" have become outdated and lame these days, so no worries! They're about as cool as emo kids now.

"The Legend of the Seeker"

It's a syndicated fantasy-adventure program along the lines of "Hercules" or "Xena, Warrior Princess." Although I don't follow it faithfully, every once in a while I'll catch an episode, and I'll always be impressed by both the production values and the sense of continuing narrative. That being said, the acting is a bit ham-fisted and the story hindered by the fact that several characters have these generic type titles - "The Seeker", "The Keeper", "The Confessor", etc. The show has an epic feel, but these goofy elements take me out of the moment.

Once again, it seems like something I'd like to like, if it were just slighter better.

... is all better now.

Old Nat knocked it out of the park in "Black Swan". I will be very surprised if she doesn't win Best Actress at the Academy Awards this year.

Great performance. Go see "Black Swan".

Well... go on... go see it.

No... I'll wait.
