Maybe I'm showing my age (50 next November eek ) but I prefer to write to people - on paper with a pen!- then post it in an envelope at the post office. Call me old fashioned! I had about twenty requests to join and finally have only to wish I'd kept on deleting the blibkin' requests.

Facebook is rubbish!

I've reconnected with people I haven't seen in 15-30 years, people I had no idea how or where to reach otherwise.

I've also built new bonds with people I only knew peripherally years ago; life has given us more commonalities than we'd have otherwise realized.

I get easily sidetracked; if I relied solely on post I'd never communicate with anyone (except in person; I'm not even a big phone user). Just to be able to jot a note, receive quick updates, to chat or even just see what others are up to is, to me, a really great tool.

and yes, there are games. and you get to see how your friends do at those too.

I've been on facebook since it launched since I was in grad school myself then (was it 2004? 2005? I can't remember anymore), and it was all the rage then, as it was only for college kids. Since then, I've continued to stay on and check it rather often and I'm glad I have. I like it a lot. Mainly, because it lets you stay in touch with people who you normally don't see anymore, and lets you reconnect with old friends. Given my generation is obviously a major portion of facebook users, I can say I've got most of my college friends and a huge portion of my old high school friends on there. Plus I have family, other acquaintances, several LWers, a couple of people from work and others on there as well.

What's best about it is I moved an hour away a few years ago from my hometown and I still talk regularly with all of my friends there as if I lived there. Its a great way to have brief updates on whats new. It also totally eliminates the "Hey, how have you been" crap of every email or phone call and lets you get right to commenting on what people are doing, etc. Its a very casual way to talk to people, which I like. I personally hate talking on the phone, even getting ancy after five minutes with my own parents, siblings and wife. I like email but even that gets annoying since I have to use email all day at work. I never really wrote letters to people before. I'm really a 'in person' kind of guy, but facebook has a certain 'cutting the chase' that I like.

I don't ever use it to meet new people though. Its all friends I've met before that I add later. I'm not big on using the internet to social network; I've only ever done that to discuss hobbies (like Legion World) I don't normally have people to talk to about. I think in the last five years on facebook, I've only ever met two people online I didn't know before, both times on my friends pages: one a girl I talked to for a day, added and have never talked to again (though we see each other's updates), and another guy who is friends with like 40 of my friends, and I now follow his movie review blog, so we kind of talk about movies and music and stuff. I never liked the myspace set-up so I never created a page--I didn't want random people to see stuff about me. The good thing with facebook is its closed off; no one can interact with you unless you let them. So any weirdos on your facebook are the lovable weirdos you let in yourself.

Kent mentioned something I've always known but never put into words before: it lets you find out the commonalities you have with people who you'd normally never talk to about random stuff before. I watch the show Sons of Anarchy and I have two people I talk to about the show every week the morning after, and both of them are people I haven't spoken to or seen in person since high school. I might random be watching the Belmont or another horse race and see who else is watching on facebook, and then talk with that person. Its cool that way.

Also, I think the direction facebook is going in is usage on your phone. They make it really easy to do that now with the new phones and thats how I usually check it. I hardly ever do it from my computer anymore. But I'm always checking it to kill time when I'm traveling for work or waiting for a client to meet me.

Jeez. I should get facebook to pay me for that testimonial. laugh That’s what happens when you’re killing time in the morning.

A friend I've known since we were four told me he was on facebook today. He said he as catching up with people from school way back when. I thought about it a moment and realized...I didn't like school and didn't like most of the people I knew back then.

If, however, Cobie wants to talk Sons of Anarchy, I'll be happy to talk about the Hamlet on Harleys. I watch the show as well. I just find it hollywood light compared to what I know about real bikers.

I've reconnected with people I lost touch with over the years. Great tool for me during a busy time of my life.

Anyone that I don't already have as a friend there, let me know.

If it weren't for Facebook, I never would've found THOMAS FATSI!!
...plus it's great getting to see sketchbook pages & other unpublished LEGION art on Yildiray Cinar's page.
...and Paul Levitz updates regularly on what issue he's working on and is very patient with stupid fanboy questions!! God bless him!

It's starting to seriously unnerve me that I agree so often with stuff rickshaw1 writes. lol

Truthfully, I want some damn privacy in my life. Maybe I just don't think it's the business of people I haven't spoken with in twenty-plus years what I'm doing now. And for the most part, I don't give a flying rat's patootie what they're doing now. So I'm a cold-hearted something-or-other, but at least I'm honest about it.

Also, how many of these damn time-killing toys does a person have to have? There's a new one coming down the plank every ten minutes and none of them really seems to be a sizable improvement over whatever they're supposed to be replacing.

[grumble]

Some of my friends are on Facebook and mention 're-connecting' with people from high school, and, for the life of me, I can't think of a single person from high school I have any desire to talk to, these days.

It's been decades and I moved over a thousand miles away from those people *deliberately.*

"Oh yeah, I remember you! Back when I had zits, you and your jerk friends would pick on me. Good times, good times. Please, tell me how successful you've become, and about your children, because I've totally spent the last 20 years in breathless anticipation, waiting to hear what unclean thing crawled out of your urethra."

For those of you on Facebook...there's an application that mogli has created and shepherded at Qualcomm (the company we both work for)...it's called VIVE for VIral VEnding.

Here's Vive's Facebook page . It officially launched at the beginning of this month. So it's still in it's infancy. He hopes it'll become an addictive new social networking game and shopping client.

If you have a Facebook account, please sign up by Midnight tonight (LAST CHANCE) to become eligible to win the Sprint HTC EVO 4G phone. Our table hosted fliers for this at Comic-Con last week and many of the members there signed up.

I don't usually ask anyone here for anything, but it would mean a lot to Kabir to reach the 1500 users mark by tonight. He'll be using the leverage of the Vive memberships to help get better deals and cool stuff to give away. He'll probably be doing another raffle next month (and if you join now or have joined you're eligible to win that too).

Did I mention it was FREE and that I've had a hand in designing and working on it?

So, for me, please sign up!

Nightcrawler, does this site have a Facebook page? I have been trying to find you guys and had no luck. Sites like Facebook/Twitter are useful for advertising forums.
