I know we've got some dedicated Potter fans here, myself included.

On her web site today, J. K. Rowling revealed (to those who decipher the clues) the title of book 7:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

No other information, such as release date, was revealed. Still, it's nice for some info on the most anticipated book of all time.

Hmmmm... not sure if I care for that title. I think it might be my least favorite of the 7 titles.

I think "Harry Potter and the Death of Voldemort" would have been better, although it might be spoilerish laugh

welll Spellbinder, looks like we have different perspective on the title. I, for one, like it a lot. It does ring true when JK Rowling announced that there would be some deaths (at least two) in the book, makes the title sounds appropriate. IMHO.

I'm with Cru on this one. Librarians and teachers everywhere are just going to have a ball explaining what "Deathly Hallows" means. sigh And I'm sure most of the people who try to say it will say "deadly hollows". wink

Then again they did change the title of the first book to "Sorcerer's Stone" for the US market, assuming American kids would have no idea what a "Philosopher's Stone" was.

The only character in all of literature who has been described as "badnass" while using the phrase "vile miscreant."

I'm almost positive that Schoolastic will change the title for us un ed-u-ma-ca-ted folks in North America.

And Spellbinder, do you really think Voldemort will be the only major character to die?

Doubt they can now - if Philosopher's Stone was the title of a later book, that'd probably have come out with that title.

Well, as long as Voldemort goes instead of Harry, that's the main thing wink

OK, so could someone please explain to me what this title means? I've been looking for the word 'hallows' in on-line dictionaries (hey, I'm far away from my books), and can't find it. 'to hallow', in the sense of 'to sanctify', yes, but I have no idea what the noun means.

From The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary

Quote
deathly /"dETli/ a.

[OE deaÞlic (= OHG todl<dlessi>h), f. as DEATH + -LY1.]

1 Subject to death, mortal. Long rare. OE.
2 Causing death, fatal, deadly. arch. ME.
3 Of the nature of or resembling death; deathlike; gloomy, pale, etc., as death. ME.
4 Of or pertaining to death. poet. M19. deathliness n. ME.
And two sets of definition as a noun, from the same dictionary:
Quote
hallow /"hal<schwa>U/ n.1

[OE halga use as n. of definite form of halig HOLY.]

1 A holy person, a saint. Usu. in pl. obs. exc. in ALL HALLOWS & in comb. below. OE.

†2 In pl. The shrines or relics of saints; (the shrines of) heathen gods. ME–M16.

Comb.: Hallow day Sc. & dial. All Hallows’ Day; a saint’s day, a holiday; Hallowmass (now chiefly Sc.) Allhallowmass; Hallowtide Allhallowtide.
Quote
hallow /"hal<schwa>U/ n.2 Now rare.

LME. [f. HALLOW v.2]

A loud shout or cry to encourage, esp. dogs in the chase, or to attract attention.
So, Harry Potter and the Holy Corpses or Harry Potter and the Dying Cries, basically. I expect the ambiguity is deliberate.

It's almost irrelevant what they call it, really, given the size of the readership.

I have a question for you, not trying to be smartassed, but...

I was in the book store a few weeks ago and some guy was almost trying to argue with one of the store clerks that Rowling wouldn't kill Harry, but would let him off the hook. He was a fan of the series and yet he clearly wanted Harry dead.

And as it turns out, there seems to be a lot of folk that want him to die with snaker ray. what gives? Why do so many people want him to die?

Thanks.

Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!

Thanks, Reboot, very informative posting. My read on this: either HP and the killing shriek or HP and the deadly shrine. Ambiguous, indeed. And really, really dark.

the title doesnt do much for me you think she could have worked monkeys into the title.

As for Harrys death I suppose in part it's down to the fack that Miss Rawlings has said a major character is going to die presumably one of the big three. The past four or so books have set up Ron and Herminie as a couple so we all want to see that. Also It doesnt help that Daniel Ratcliff is saying he want's Harry killed off when he gets the chance. Also if Harry lives it's almost like the windows open for sell out post Hogwarts books. I imagine she will be thrown insane amounts of money to write further books so it will be interesting to see if this occurs.

Count me in for denial. I'll be very disappointed if after all he's been through, Rowling kills the character. Harry deserves to live on in the imaginations of the readers. I'm a big rereader, so I can't imagine having much fun rereading the books when I know he's dead at the end. Blech. Also, remember that these are ostensibly children's books--again, there will be a lot of upset people if any of the big three die. Hell, I'm still waiting for Dumbledore to show back up (I know there's a body, but he went over the side of the castle wall. Plenty of time to substitute a fake corpse. Denial, denial, denial!).

The only consistent feature of all of your dissatisfying relationships is you.

I dunno...if part of Voldemort's soul is in Harry (i.e. Harry's a horcrux), he might have to die. I don't want him to die, but there's certainly evidence that Rowling could be setting that up in Half-Blood.

I believe, if you read closely, that JK has been preparing readers for a 'life's not always fair' death since book 2. I just don't see, if JK stays true to her story and style so far, Harry surviving to the end of the last book.

I'm hoping that Harry just dumps Ginny and finds true love with Luna Lovegood. She's quirky, but I like her alot, and think she understands Harry better than that fickle Weasely girl wink

Hey, I love Ginny! I like her and Harry's romance the best! laugh

Actually, I don't think Harry will die at all. Its just soooo obvious that Rowling can't really do that, we've been expecting it since like Book 3 or 4. I think there's got to be more to it with bigger twists at the end.

Luna should get with Neville--he needs all the love, especially after he becomes a shining star in this one and gives Beatrix Lestrange her commupance. Unless he's the one that dies... choke ...(I really like Neville)...

I second that - Neville and Luna all the way. I know Rowling herself said it won't happen but that's beside the point. At any rate, I don't think Harry's really in mortal danger. It just wouldn't be much of an ending to the series if he died. I don't think Ron or Hermione are in for it either nor Ginny. There's going to be a happy ending I think, though I'm sure a fair few of the supporting cast won't make it through. Pretty sure we'll be losing a Weasly or two.
