Man, I am so disappointed that Fabian's leaving this title... frown

I really feel like this series gains more steam with every issue, and by the time he gets through all of his spotlight issues it will all be over.

No offence to Tom DeFalco as as a writer - he had long runs on FF, Thor/Thunderstrike and Spider-Girl, so his writing obviously has appeal to lots of people. I am not one of them though, I really can't handle his scripting/dialogue at all and the one interview I have read with him about taking over LL doesn't do anything to fill me with confidence that he has been at all familiar with these characters prior to taking over the role of writing them.

Boo. frown

This one fell a little flat for me. Dawnstar takes the lead as the narrator this time, but comes across as terribly dull and stoic. I realise Dawny's a hard character to write as she's so aloof, but there must be more you can do than re-inforce her blandness.

The team's split in two as Timber wolf, Wildfire and Tyroc hunt Red Rage/Yera, while Dawnstar and Tellus piece together what happened to Alastor and track him down. Both teams get more than they bargained for as a black ops team arrives to collect Yera and Alastor transforms, then activates his Carggite DNA.

2 whole pages for a shot of Wildfire flying by with Tyroc in the background? What a waste of space.

I like the artwork okay, generally, but the aliens are ugly and lame imho. I realize drawing believable aliens has to be tough though.

The Yera/Rdrayj thing makes no sense to me and Timber Wolf has been ineffectual so far. He stood around talking while Rdrayj was feeding on that other alien last issue and in this issue, Yera oozes out of the alien asking for help and all he can do is tell her to calm down?

The Dawnstar/Tellus exchanges were somewhat interesting explorations of how their powers work but there was a lot of excess blather too.

Another thing that bugged me about Dawny's narration this issue: Her lamenting that she's only ever tracked, but never hunted, and that she's always reactive instead of "doing stuff" or whatever. That just doesn't fly with me. She was a (very successful) bounty hunter before she joined the Legion. I'm pretty sure that would have involved hunting as well as tracking. Even after that, she was always a proactive Legionnaire and never afraid to be in the thick of a fight. In fact, that's where she had the most tension with Wildfire, because he was so over-protective and she didn't need it.

I agree with Dave. Dawnstar would never shy away from attacking her target when she found it.

One good thing is that at least we get an explanation for Yera attacking and killing people. Apparently, she wasn't in control. Thank goodness for that.

I think Tyroc is calling Drake "Honey" under his breath on that splash page!

While I loved the insight into Dawnstar, I do agree she has never hesitated in action, sometimes to the point of getting in over her head.

There are promising ideas scattered around, but, especially with Fabian already headed out the door, I don't really think they are going to go anywhere.

Cutting a group of Legionnaires off from their tech, particularly their Flight Rings, is a potentially neat way to let those with natural flight capabilities shine *and* a way to let a character with communication abilities (Tellus and / or Tyroc) shine as well.

But I'm not sure we're going to get to see much (if any) exploration of that. I'd much rather have seen Tyroc use a combination of super-hearing and sound manipulation to keep distant teammates in contact, for instance, rather than have him being able to 'manipulate sound waves' to fly at supersonic speeds.

(And, really, what's up with that? By manipulating sound I can fly *faster* than sound? That's silly.)

I enjoyed this issue -- though I think much of that has to with the artwork and that I've always liked the main characters.

I think, though, that Brin looks a bit bland. This outfit is better than the Gary Frank design from a few years ago, but T-Wolf's outfit, hairstyle and face really aren't as interesting as what he had in the 70s and 80s.

The floppy hair just doesn't work for me. He's an active aggressive kind of guy. Hair that looks all prickly and stands up suits him. Hair that lies there like a sedated tree sloth does not.

The costume is a little busier than I would prefer (something sleek and dynamic, that helps suggest the energy of the character) might work better), but it's not terrible.

The Dawnstar thing...I agree that she has never been someone to shy away from action, and in fact this gets her in trouble sometimes. I don't have a problem with her not seeing herself that way though, I think it ties in with her whole perfectionism and constant need to prove herself. I also don't have a problem with Wildfire seeing her that way because he has such an idealised interpretation of her. So I didn't have an issue with any of that stuff as presented in this issue.

Overall, this was my least favourite issue so far....it kind of felt more mechanical than the other issues, and I don't think we really got into Dawnstar's head in a really interesting way the same way we did with Brin and Wildfire.

I did enjoy it, I don't have any real complaints - I just wasn't as much into it as I have been up till now.

I am enjoying the series so far. I like the in-depth focus on these Legionnaires and their development within the series. I actually liked the latest issue best for the artwork.

Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere here on Legion World and apologies if this is redundant, but the villain Alastor has made a previous Legion appearance in Adventure #314 (Legion Archive #2). In that story there is also mention of a wandering science planet called "Lost World" that was lifeless when the Legionnaires visited it.

I thought of him too, KQ, but wasn't his name Alaktor, with a K, not an S?

Yeah, it's Alaktor. Hard to tell if it's a coincidence or if the similarity in names of the time traveling villains was intentional.

#4 was the strongest issue of the series so far, for me. We get some clear explanations as to exactly what happened/is happening with Yera. Clarity. Yay! I'm also feeling some real chemistry develop among the lost team members. That's a good sign.

Whoops - my bad. I was going totally by memory, which is more and more becoming risky business. Still, I just went back to re-read the Adventure story, and it Could be that character brought back easily enough, spelling aside.

Why does Alastor have more than one set of alien DNA?
Is he from Cargg?
That would make him of human descent still?
Cargg used to be a human colony, anyway, IIRC.

I love this artist, really.
His Dawny is lovely, especially.
It's not my favorite costume for her, but, oh well.

I think that since Fabian was going to make Brin more wolflike, the artististic concept was to make him more unkempt, wilder.
Thus the longish hair.

I don't know if it's his best look but it's not his worst, imo.

I'm going to miss Fabian.
sigh
