Cobie thinks he's a crimelord of Jo's acquaintance who has mellowed.

Thoth thinks he's the nouveau-riche/betrayer-of-his-humble-roots/neo-Thatcherite Daddy Nah.

What do YOU think?

If it's Crav Nah from issue 184's 'One Legionnaire Must Go!', he's supposed to be Jo's ding-dong daddy-o.

But he could also be a mellowed crimelord, who has betrayed his roots by going straight.

And by 'going straight,' I mean there ain't no Missus Nah, if ya know what I mean.

(It's a Rimborian thing. They're all crooks, and the only legit kid is one you stole from a rival as an infant and raised to hate his real folks anyway...)

Jo and his dad were taking in a day at the Rimborian Botanical Gardens. What's the big deal?

Where was Mrs. Nah? Who do you think was taking the photo?

Seriously, though, had it been established before S&LoSH 239 that Jo was a rough boy from a rough world?

I don't think you get any real hints of Rimbor being a seedy world until the An Ryd murder story, and I think it's pretty much canon throughout the preboot that Jo's own background is pretty much comfortably middle class, though he has no problem with acting the part of an outlaw when he needs to.

It's only with the reboot that he develops a background in which he himself was a gang member.

Thanks, EDE.

No wonder I prefer Reboot Jo -- he might not have been as clever as Preboot Jo, but at least he was the real thing.

I am NOT a fan of the way TMK made Preboot Jo into Mister Perfect, Mister-Always-One-Step-Ahead-Of-Everybody. TMK even pissed on a scene from the An Ryd issue.

See I've always thought his fancying himself more of a street tough than he actually was made him a more interesting and complex character than the kind of cliched "everybody on Rimbor belongs to a gang" situation of the reboot.

I agree that TMK went overboard with him in that annual spotlight, however.

I think a lot of the TMK annual Jo was lifted from an earlier appearance. I remember coming across the issue later and being surprised at how much of their take on him was from there.

It's been something of a trend, unfortunately, that the homeworlds of various Legionnaires are depicted as monolithic, such as all of Talokk VIII being a barbarian-ruled desert, or all of Rimbor being run by crimelords, etc.

Kind of like Star Trek aliens, for that matter, where all Klingons are X and all Vulcans are Y and all Ferengi are Z, like some kind of shorthand, which, IMO, kind of shortchanges them.

Rimbor, Winath, etc. possibly being Earth colonies at least it makes a bit more sense that they would have a single language and culture dominating, I suppose. But truly alien worlds like Durla and Talokk VIII should probably have dozens of different languages and cultures, spread across the planet.

Wouldn't Talok be considered to have 2 main cultures? The city dwellers as well as the various tribes that operate in the deserts.
