Legion World, Sol system, 2.5 light minutes due galactic north of Saturn.

<Element Lad!> Tellus’ telepathic voice interrupted the Legion Leader as he welcomed a delegation from the United Planets High Council and their assistants and aides onto Legion World. At his side Tyroc, Titan, Gear and Sade continued to welcome the assorted group before them as they took the anti-grav lift from their heavily armed craft down to the docking bay in strict authorative order.

<Tellus... is this important? I’ve got my hands full with damned UP Councillors and their pet liggers...>

<My apologies, only Cosmic Boy, Otaki and Lexikon’s flight rings have all registered an energy attack. All three are in need of urgent medical assistance, I have called for a support team to congregate in the Warp Control Room in three minutes>

<Okay... Well done, make sure Kent goes too if they need medical assistance>

Element Lad nodded to the tall Shazam empowered telepath known as Titan who nodded back once and was gone in a flash of super speed.

Jan Arrah gave a full smile to the startled elderly ambassador that the young Legionnaire had just been speaking to and casually explained that there was a mission leaving but it was nothing for her to worry about. The ambassador muttered something about the excitement of youth and held her arm out for Element Lad to take as he led her gently from the anti-grav lift pad.

Even while he politely pointed out the impressive neo-baroque detailing along the corridor to the ambassador the Legion Leader silently wished to himself he had chosen the easy option of going to stop a planetary war rather than trying to schmooze these overly privileged people from a distant council that had not always been supportive of his team.

As Sun Boy’s mental voice echoed along the flight ring generated artificial telepathic communication grid stating he was ready to lead the team to Skarford vi Element Lad gritted his teeth and resisted the urge to growl his frustration.

Sounds exciting Harbi, you excel at creating alien races and all 3 seem like winners. The tension is palpable and I eagerly await the next installment.

Marya Pai was playing Hacky Sack with Hethuk Bran Drommsi when the alert came through.

She had taught her lover this ancient Terran child’s game that involved keeping an object in the air without using one's hands while passing it between the players when she had been on Talok viii and they had kept playing whenever they had time since. It had, of course, gotten extremely competitive quite quickly between the two of them with each trying to catch the other out with sly kicks of the Sack – a small beanbag with several feathers tied to it – towards awkward places or even over each other’s heads, but they had remained evenly matched. Marya was amazed at just how flexible and acrobatic the young Talokean Smith was as it had been difficult for her to find someone that could keep up with her. Even her older sister had stopped playing around about her 12th birthday.

Heth caught the Sack in his hands as Sun Boy’s message came through the telepathic relay.

“My point!” Marya cried with a cheer.

“Yeah... You got to go darlin’, I’ll see you later. Try not to tire yourself out too much though, I want a rematch.” And with that the Smith took Dragonwing in his arms for a brief hug and kiss.

“See ya later... ya big blue gorgeous loser!” Marya laughed as she flew out of the door of their apartment and made her way to the meeting point.

Wildfire hung in space not really looking at anything in particular.

Dawnstar had left ten minutes before with Andromeda. The two young women had decided on a rematch, this time Kara had said she would head in towards the galactic core where there would be a lot more opportunities to confuse and hide from the tracker.
Dawnstar had told Drake she would be fine without him and left without another word.

Just like that!

“I’ll be fine without you.”

He knew damn well she would be fine without him, more than fine actually she would be amazing but did she not realise how much of a wreck he was without her? As this maudlin thought ran endless rings around his mind Sun Boy’s call for a support team reached him and Wildfire sighed and turned, blasting towards the airlock. Maybe, he thought, hitting some bad guys would make him feel better and take his mind off the gulf that was widening between him and the only person he knew that... that he had ever truly loved.

Gazelle and Power Boy played tag.

The gym floor had adapted to their request and they now had a fifty metre wide cube filled with moving walls of varying lengths and heights. She used her agility to bound around the obstacle while he lowered his density and floated through them like a ghost. Gazelle had initially outclassed the purple skinned young man; her speed and athleticism surprising him, but he had quickly upped his game and became as sneaky as he could. They had not established solid ground rules so Jed used his flight ring’s tracker app and judicious use of his dematerialising ability to follow or hide from his Khundian teammate depending on who was ‘it' regardless where she sprung to.

Phantom Girl watched from the mezzanine floor where she ran laps with Ferro.

Sun Boy’s call to arms ended their leisure time as all four Legionnaires immediately responded and flew towards the doors.

<Phantom Girl reporting in. I’ve got Gazelle, Power Boy and Ferro with me Dirk. We’ll be there in a minute>

Timber Wolf and Mwindaji were leaving the Mission Monitor Control Room when the call came through.

“C’mon Gahaji...” Brin Londo started to spring forward.

“But Brin, I gotta find Zoe. Tellus said she was on Ventura...” The young tracker stood where he had been and looked down at the floor rather than towards the older team member. Brin approached him and put his hand upon Gahaji’s chest forcing his head up.

“Listen... our teammates are in danger... and it’s happening right now! Salvaging your love life can wait, okay? That’s the price of being who we are, y’know. Anyway, if there's one person who can find someone it's you so we'll do it later... c'mon we got friends and a world to save.”

“Yeah... ummm...”

“Now Legionnaire! Let’s go.”

Thunder saved Dragonmage from the collapsing cave by milliseconds.

As the ancient stark cliff started to crumble and fall into the mighty gorge below she raced her unconscious comrade to the Legion Cruisers that hung in the air half a klick above the Temple for All. It took her several desperate seconds to access the airlock and carry him through to the auto-doc cubicle.

After several seconds waiting for the holo-prognosis to appear Thunder was relieved to see her teammate had only minor concussion and a couple of broken ribs. She took a deep breath before speaking into her Flight Ring, calling for Cosmic Boy. There was a ‘breep’ before the ring’s automated voice informed her that the Legion founder was currently unconscious.

“Harmonia!” Cece said with some urgency at her flight ring, suddenly afraid for her ancient friend.

“Thunder, are you alright?” a holo-bust appeared in the air before her.

Quickly Cece told the former team leader about what had happened and that her flight ring reported Rokk was unconscious. Harmonia nodded as if this was not unexpected. The two woman spoke for another thirty seconds before agreeing that Cece would wait in the cruiser for Harmonia’s team to return.

Thunder quickly contacted Night Girl, who, by judging what the holo-avatar showed, was steadily punching her way through the massed army of the B’Lari at the time, to keep the former Academy instructor up to speed. Lydda said she believed Rokk would be okay and to follow Harmonia’s plan. Cece thanked her before cutting off the transmission.

Outside of the cruiser and across the Great Rift Valley Harmonia turned to the Green Lantern and Backlash; she could see they had heard the entire conversation. Harmonia turned to the Falmoroids and briefly explained the situation and promised they would return to assist them with the rebuilding of their Great Nest once they had stopped the war that was building on the other side of the rift valley. Without another word the Green Lantern spun a bubble of energy around the Legionnaires.

“No, I will fly under my own power. Your Lantern’s light disturbs me. It is a twisting of a spectrum that was never meant to be broken. It is unnatural beyond the point of comfort.” With an imperious jerk of her head upwards Harmonia Li flew towards the distant cruiser leaving her teammates and the ancient crystalline Falmoroids behind.

“Meanwhile, I was not built for flight so would be ever-so grateful. Thank you Chloraja.” Backlash said with a broad smile upon his face.

While the Flash disarmed the B’Lari Night Girl and Karate Kid dove into the army before them and caused havoc.

The three women effectively stopped the huge force amassed on the dry plain between them. Night Girl slammed her fists into the ground, creating a shock wave that threw hundreds of the centaur like warriors into the air. Karate Kid darted between them using her recently acquired knowledge of the B’Lari’s natural vulnerable points to effectively stop them in their tracks with efficient flicks of her fists, elbow spikes and feet. Lydda was amazed at the incredible level of skill the new Legionnaire was displaying; the former Sub had only met Val Armorr on a couple of occasions but she was fairly certain he would have been very proud that the young yellow skinned girl from Lythyl had chosen to use his code name.

While his teammates took the B’Lari army apart Gravity Kid flew towards the silver donut shaped vessel at the back of the plain. As he flew Tel Vole disrupted gravity in a circle around him throwing the soldiers twenty feet into the air as he approached though unfortunately for them the effect was temporary and by the time he was ten metres past then they fell back to the ground. This quite effectively created a barrier between him and the blaster fire that the B’Lrai on either side were directing his way.

It took Tel almost a full minute to race across the sea of soldiers at full speed. In his wake were hundreds of wounded and unconscious soldiers; which all added to the confusion as the Flash raced between them taking weapons out of their spade like hands, kicking up a dust cloud from the dry ground as she zoomed past. Meanwhile Night Girl threw the warriors around like toys as she strode through their ranks and Karate Kid clinically cut a swath through their ranks with a deft skill.

The B’Lari army were in disarray; pandemonium and chaos were all that could be seen now of their once impressive military display.

The silver circular craft hovered thirty feet from the arid ground, a heat mirage danced in the air below it. There were still a couple of B’Lari soldiers caught within his gravity wake so Tel Vole almost didn’t see the attack in time to dodge. The golden spear that tore through the air missed his abdomen by centimetres as he desperately rolled in the air. As he spun he realised that the spear had not been the major threat; an emerald energy net dropped upon him from above and for all his attempts to reverse gravity’s pull it wrapped tightly around his muscular frame and drove him into the ground.

From on top of the silver craft a figure leapt down onto the ground close to the now unconscious Gravity Kid.

“It’s a damned Legionnaire!”

“We knew they would arrive sooner or later but it makes no difference, they can’t stop us now. This world is ours. The plan will succeed!”

Laurel was bored.

Their cover story was so bogus!

When Chameleon Boy had suggested his plan Invisible Kid had stared at the Espionage Squad leader, an obvious exchange passed between the two along a private telepathic comm link, though after a couple of seconds Jacques Foccart shook his head and agreed.

Chameleon Boy had split the team. Kinetix and Kid Quantum were supposed to be taking Thirteen out on a wild night out to celebrate his recent Legion membership. Their job was to attract attention. Invisible Kid would be with them, out of sight monitoring exactly what sort of attention they received and on the lookout for anything that might be suspicious. Shield and Chameleon Boy were meanwhile going to sneak into the vaults of the Shinestern Casino Chain where the Psi-SPs had identified the metas were experimented upon under the care of Lord Druflr’s staff.

Laurel Kent had been at the Academy for long enough to know that this wasn’t standard Espionage Squad planning. Their job was to get in, do the job and get out before anyone knew what had happened. The three teammates on display upstairs would only alert the casino’s security to potential incursions, making their job down here in the labyrinthine complex built underground. Chameleon Boy had shooshed her quiet when she started to ask and transformed himself into a sand fly without another word.
She hovered along the twilit corridor, Chameleon Boy was ahead checking for security as he flew. Her flight ring automatically broadcast a jamming signal that would stop any known form of passive electronic scanning. The Distorter on her belt would keep her unseen if she didn’t move. Laurel knew that the team had conducted these sorts of missions for years now but still it didn’t feel quite right being here when she knew her teammates were partying upstairs somewhere within one of the most hedonistic establishments on Ventura. At that thought she smiled; apart from perhaps Rimbor there were very few places that could take hedonism to the same level as the Ventura casinos...

As Laurel let her mind wander with thoughts of possible parties she could be missing ahead of her the air blazed and she was thrown backwards to crash into a ferro-concrete wall with a thud.

Harmonia's disdain towards the Lanterns was mentioned in canon when Mon El had a ring so I decided to give a reason for it. Other than she's simply obnoxious of course, that's a seperate matter

Ventura team, oh well, sometimes things jus go wrong... they won't be having a good time for a while. Still one of them will step up pretty soon, hope you like what I've got planned.

While Harmonia and her team made their way to the cruiser Thunder had taken the opportunity to check on their other teammates; Gravity Kid’s flight ring had also alerted their system to his sudden unconsciousness. Lexikon’s had registered that the tough Tamarean Princess had regained consciousness but been quickly dispatched back out.

Harmonia arrived, her face stern. Hearing of a nuclear explosion in the Falmoroid’s Great Nest had greatly upset her, and to be followed by the news that four of her comrades were unconscious had turned that sadness into something closer to anger. Cece remembered from a thousand years before the determined look the elemental had when she was going to act; Harmonia’s face showed the same signs now. The hero from the 21st century knew that the team’s former leader would not tolerate this situation any further.

“Thunder and Green Lantern, you will go to the Temple for All and assist Cosmic Boy’s team. They are clearly in the most need. I will take Backlash to investigate Gravity Kid’s situation.”

“Won’t Lydda be able to help him?” Cece asked politely.

“She has her hands full at present and it is my belief that time is of the essence...”

“So it’s just as well we’re here now as well. What’s the Sit Rep Harmonia?” Sun Boy stepped out of one of Henry’s warps that opened just behind the group; he was closely followed by Timber Wolf, Gazelle, Ferro, Phantom Girl, Titan, Dragonwing, Wildfire, Mwindaji, Power Boy and Dr Shakespeare. Harmonia smiled at the newly arrived team: Jan had obviously once again sent a strong team to back up a mission and firmly resolve the situation. This tactic had led to them recently smashing a pirates ring and freeing thousands of slaves. She hoped their current mission would have an equally successful outcome with this mob-handed approach, though the ancient elemental kept her opinions of this tactic to herself as she responded to Sun Boy.

Harmonia spent the minute sharing all the information she had gathered with the deputy leader and the new arrivals. Meanwhile Dr Shakespeare excused himself as he went to check on Dragonmage. Sun Boy called up scans from the cruiser to precisely locate their colleagues so they could strike with precision, and as he did Thunder noticed something. While the ships scanners located their teammates Dirk also tried to figure out whatever it was that had burrowed into and collapsed part of the cliffs in the Great Rift Valley. Cece realised that the ‘whatever it is’ had a similar energy reading echoed throughout the globe. She politely asked Dirk to move over as her fingers spun across the hard light control screen.

Gazelle and Ferro shared a look. The rumours about Sun Boy and Thunder’s friendship were rife amongst the Shakes regulars. Gazelle’s smile soon faded as she saw what it was that Thunder had spotted.

“There! Oh Holy Thunder Bolts! There are so many of them... look.”

Before them the holo spun around showing a representation of this alien world; one major continent and several smaller island chains amongst thousands and thousands of klicks of open shallow seas. Scattered evenly under the world’s surface was evidence of an energy source similar to the machine that was currently burrowing through the cliffs. In total there were just short of half a million of these machines tunnelling into the crust of this world, creating a labyrinthine set of passageways a klick or so under the surface.

As the group took a collective gasp Sun boy contacted Night Girl to let her know their situation and to ask if she needed any assistance. Lydda had expressed her surprise but assured him that her team were fine, they just had a few thousand B’Lari soldiers to deal with then they would lend a hand. Dirk shared a grim smile along the holo relay before breaking contact.

“Right, time to do something... with me is Thunder, Power Boy, Mwindaji and Ferro. Phantom Girl, I want you to take Titan, Green Lantern and Wildfire to go figure out what the hell those things are and stop them if you can. Harmonia take Timber Wolf, Gazelle, Dragonwing and Backlash to investigate the craft Gravity Kid was after... get our boy back, okay? Dr Shakespeare, do you read me?”

“Here Dirk, what is it?” A holo of the teams’ resident physician appeared before the group.

“We’re going, will you be okay?”

“Yeah, don’t worry. Xao is regaining consciousness; just a few bumps and bruises to deal with. He’ll be back on form in an hour or so.”

“Good to hear. Okay, if you haven’t heard from me in fifteen minutes I want you to contact Jan and send through all the scan results in the AI’s memory back to base, okay?”

“Of course, good luck everybody.”

“Thanks. Right,” Sun Boy looked up at the team before him, “Let’s do this!”

Their flight rings took them through a courtyard and into the central domed building.

Sun Boy had Thunder lead with him just behind. Power Boy lowered his molecular density and stealthily snuck through the wall 90 degrees around from the entrance while Mwindaji and Ferro brought up the rear.

Inside the large room where Cosmic Boy had initially led his small team there were scorch marks on the floor alongside two dead B’Lari and a dozen burned corpses of the small Reedim Colteri. There was no sign of their colleagues. Mwindaji held his hand over his mouth in disgust as he approached the remains of the large centaur like B’Lari. Something else else had torn one of them in half while the other had nearly half of its long body ripped open. Ferro put his hand on the trackers shoulder as a show of solidarity though neither spoke.

“Gahaji, where are they?” Dirk spoke quietly, almost reverently at the sight of this slaughter.

“Below.” He turned as he replied, pointing towards a shadowy stairwell, “Eighty metres I’d say... or thereabouts, right down there.”

“Okay... so Jed you’re our eyes on this, can you phase through that much on one breath?”

“Can try...” And with that Power Boy took a gulp of air and dematerialised again, falling through the floor. As he did Thunder approached the stairwell and sighed.

“It’s such an obvious trap it’s a shame not to step into it, wouldn’t you agree Dirk?” She gave the deputy leader a big grin as she asked.

“Yeah, I’d say so. Do you and Doug want to have first dibs?”

“Race you!” Ferro said to Thunder as he dove past her and down the stairwell.

Both Sun Boy and Mwindaji smiled as their two colleagues flew out of sight and seconds later they heard the sounds of blaster fire and Ferro cursing loudly as he smashed the offending weapons. Thunders laughter trailed behind.

<Dirk! You guys need to get down here now!> Power Boy’s voice sounded panicked as he shouted across the telepathic relay.

“My team... we will take the other cruiser. Its presence may help delay any escape plans the warmongers on that saucer ship might have.” Harmonia strode to the airlock and gave a quick glance over her shoulder before flying out and heading to the second Legion craft hanging on auto-pilot quarter of a klick away.

“Warmongers?” Dragonwing asked.

“Whoever is responsible has committed atrocities and somehow turned this peaceful world into a battle ground. Trust me Marya, ‘warmongers’ was not the first noun that came to my mind...”

Dragonwing smiled as she followed the ancient elemental through the airlock.

It was three minutes later that the sonic boom of the cruiser ripped through the air above the silver circular craft that Gravity Kid had been striving for. As they flew there below them the team could see the devastation that Night Girl, Karate Kid and the Flash had inflicted upon the B’Lari army.

As they approached the Legion cruiser had been rocked by explosive bursts of energy fire.

“Me first...” Backlash said as they stood by the airlock. The cruiser’s structural integrity was more than enough to survive the energy fire being tossed towards it so the team were waiting to get closer before they flew out of their ship towards whoever was waiting for them.

“Good idea Mrruaw... you block their fire and we’ll fly in to kick their butts.” Dragonwing placed her hand affectionately on the Tigerram’s head as she spoke. He purred in response.

“Okay... in 3... 2... Now!” Harmonia strode forward, following her team out of the airlock and into the sky above the suspicious silver craft.

Thirty metres below the Legionnaires the circular craft spun in the air. On top of it, inside an inlaid platform stood three beings, each prepared for the fight that they were away to enter.

Backlash leapt directly towards them, his massive frame absorbing several explosive blasts; his mutant body absorbed and transmuted the energy into mass to add to his already considerable bulk. It was a twenty foot long Tigerram that smashed into the craft throwing it onto its side. Swiftly behind him Timber Wolf acrobatically dived onto the upturned platform and smashed one of his red skinned opponents roundly on the cheek with a massive kick, throwing them out of the craft and down towards the ground. Gazelle followed suit; the Khundian elbow struck a second opponent under their chin throwing them into the air, as they went up she jumped, spun and gave a roundhouse kick to their solar plexus knocking them flying. Neither of the warmongers had a chance to activate their golden weapons in the melee, the Legionnaires had both been too fast.

The third, his skin entirely artificial gold apart from a strip across his face which showed his deep red skin and black eyes, stood upon the air, unmoved by the fight that erupted around him. Backlash, now on the ground, rose up onto his hind legs and stretched two enormous paws out. The golden being put his hands in front of him and energy nets flew out from his palms pulling the Tigerram off balance. The warmonger’s attention was fixed upon the now struggling feline Legionnaire so was visibly surprised when he felt a tap on his shoulder. As he spun around Dragonwing breathed a blast of dragon fire into his face before kicking him solidly on the side of his head knocking him spinning towards Timber Wolf. The Zuunian Legionnaire jumped over the golden skinned villain with a quick punch to the other side of his head knocking him further off balance. Gazelle was on hand to administer the coup de grace and punch him squarely on the jaw, knocking the villain unconscious.

By the time he had fallen to the ground with a crunch Harmonia had joined her teammates. Five seconds had passed since she had left the cruiser.

She held her right hand out and followed a holo line that came out from her flight ring. She flew towards the up-ended craft and pulled upon latches that sat underneath the bench that ran all the way around the now 90 degree upended platform. Gravity Kid tumbled out into her arms. The young Legionnaire looked as if he had taken a serious beating.

Timber Wolf approached her and gently took the unconscious gravity manipulator from her arms as Dragonwing and Gazelle administered incapacity cuffs on the fallen warmongers on the ground below. The craft that Backlash had knocked over wobbled as it hung on its side in the air beside them. Harmonia called for auto-doc support from the cruiser that floated above them.

Brin turned to Harmonia and quietly asked “You recognise them too doncha Harmonia? They're Tyrrazians... bloody Tyr’s people. They turned their homeworld into a moving weapon. Do you think that’s what they’ve planned for this planet too?”

Thirteen had been to the Casino’s of Ventura before so wasn’t all that surprised when the live sex act came on stage before them.

The fact it involved eight ‘actors’ of four different species wasn’t all that shocking either. He had access to the Galactic Net and as a teenager had of course looked up certain rather taboo subject matter before, in holo form anyway, so what he was seeing wasn’t terribly surprising really. Kid Quantum appeared transfixed by it, though in her usual cool way she didn’t stare directly but took long furtive glances sideways towards the ensemble as they showed the crowd what could be waiting for them later in the ‘members only lounge’ at the rear of the club if they only paid an extra 100 credits entrance fee. Kinetix meanwhile was blushing like a beacon! The poor girl didn’t know where to look, and as they had arrived in a very obvious glare of publicity there were people watching and taking great interest in her discomfort all around. Hot Zone News would be full of the images from this moment for days to come, she just knew it...

Their flight ring’s auto eco-protect function had been amped for this mission to protect them from any poisons. Much to Thirteen’s disappointment this included alcohol, though the three young Legionnaires all consumed the vast array of drinks that arrived on their table bought by the club owner as a thank you for the good publicity they would bring.

<Perhaps, mes ami, you should be a bit more drunk and a bit lezz staring at ze show...> Jacques Foccart’s voice slipped through the telepathic relay reminding them that they were supposed to be celebrating. As he finished each of their flight rings pinged and an automated telepathic broadcast alert let them know that Chameleon Boy was unconscious and Laurel had been on the receiving end of an energy attack.

<Mes ami... I think our cover iz blown, eet iz time we got our friends and left, non?>

Twelve levels below Laurel Kent stood up. Around her was smoke and debris from the damage the blast had inflicted on the corridor. Her flight ring sent out an alarm informing her that Reep was unconscious and that she had been blasted.

“Stupid thing...” Laurel crouched and peered through the smoke. There were several figures but she couldn’t make out much. Whoever it was at least one of them could throw her around with their energy attacks, she was unsure if she would get close enough to physically strike them. And even if that would do any good she hadn’t inherited strength...

<Jacques... get them out of here, we’re busted! I’m going to try to get Cham out and we’ve got to run>

<Oui... do you need assistance Mam’selle? We can be with you...> A second after Invisible Kids’ voice was cut off Laurel’s flight ring pinged, announcing that all four of her teammates in the casino above were unconscious.

Laurel focussed on the four figures she could see walking through the smoke filled corridor towards her. With her teammates being taken out so quickly above, she knew immediately that this must have been a trap from the start. Well, Element Lad would soon send reinforcements and until then, thought Laurel, she wasn’t going to make it easy for them to catch her!

The invulnerable descendent of the galaxy’s most famous hero turned and fled.

The dark walls of Mission Monitor control room glittered with reflected light as holo after holo popped up.

Gim and Yera Allon had volunteered to be on Mission Monitor duty partially as they felt it was overdue that they took a turn and also because Yera had said she wished to discuss an idea with her husband and they knew that being here would ensure they were together for the next eight hours. The mission on Skarford vi was currently their focus as the different teams flight rings updated their status in a real-time data flow which Gim dutifully logged.

Yera casually watched the side screens, more than hopeful that the current reports would soon be over and she could continue telling her husband about the thrill she had had teaching the new Legionnaire Starkling. The Allon’s had spoken before about taking a less active role in the team but they just hadn’t quite gotten around to doing anything about it. Yera knew from experience that unless he was involved with the Legion then Gim would never be truly happy. Not that he’d say anything of course; he was too damn well brought up to ever moan about something as minor as his career. She knew that the Legion life, while exciting, wasn’t really for her, she just wasn’t an adventurer like most of the rest of the team were. Gim on the other hand had the Legion bug... but... but she knew he had been eaten up by doubts quite badly over the last few years. Perhaps if they announced they’d like to take over the Academy properly it might be the compromise that they were both seeking. She just had to sell it to Gim... if only she could somehow make him think it was his idea.

It was as she glanced that she thought she saw something suspicious on a monitor... a shadow, fleetingly and it was gone.

“Gim, I think I saw someone in the lower levels. Scan doesn’t report anyone there, sensors say it’s empty. Do we investigate?” Yera pointed at the image she had rewound to show her husband.

“Look! There...” and it was gone again. Just for a second the silhouette of a figure before it melted into the shadowy background.

“Sure honey, let’s get Gear and Amp Girl onto it, that’s one of the engineering levels...”

“They might need some assistance... just in case... let’s see... ah... Starkling is close by too.”

“Your new best friend, eh?” Gim teased.

Yera smiled back at her husband as she called through the telepathic relay to the infrastructure manager and the new Legionnaire to ask them to investigate the strange sight she had just witnessed.

As Gear and Starkling sent their affirmatives along the telepathic relay the mission board breeped an alarm as it announced five of the six members of the Ventura team were unconscious. They were obviously in trouble!

“It never rains but it pours...” Said Gim to himself as he reached for the alarm.

I wonder if the two missions are related somehow? But even if not, both are proving to be top-notch.

Glad to see the large team of Legionnaires kicking ass on Skarford VI. Everyone has a nice moment. Loved Thunder figuring out the energy signatures.

Kinetix's reaction to the sex show was priceless, I am loving your take on Zoe. Laurel's intelligent flee response was great as well, she knows she is outclassed this time.

and Gim and Yera would be great at the Academy, no doubt. I'm sure Yera will successfully convince Gim. You are right, she is not an adventurer like the others, but being in the Academy will still make sure she gets a lot of action.

I liked Zoe's reaction too...I also thought Thirteen's was a nice bit of characterisation!

Laurel on her own...for some reason I'm reminded of a riled up Wolverine taking on the Hellfire Club alone way back in their first appearance

Again I am quite liking the way you write Yera too and it will be fun to see Starkling & crew on their little jaunt!

Zoe was priceless as everyone else has said. I'm with her i'd probably be blushing a bit.

Thirteen is an interesting character. I don't know what to make of him yet but he's caught my attention.

Laurel was smart to run. I just hope she gets some help soon.

This war is really heating up and now the teams cavalry have arrived!

But i love the moment with Yera and Gim. When Gim called Starkling her new best friend i really liked that. I think the two of them taking over the academy would be a great idea and compromise.

Otaki and Lexikon where unconscious, urgent bruising and redness showed they had been badly battered before being strapped into plasti-glass cylinders.

Jed Rikane had seen enough bombs to know that the small flickering icon was a countdown of sorts and by making their way here the Legionnaires that had come to rescue their teammates may unintentionally be responsible for their being killed if he set off the bombs… Jed shook his head, desperate to get rid of his worries about his husband Tel. He had enough experience to know that his mind was creating these worst case scenario’s rather than looking for a solution as a distraction from his big concern about Gravity Kid. The Academy instructors had warned him about this aspect of his character many times in the past.

There was no sign of Rokk Krinn anywhere. Whoever had trussed up the two Legionnaires had taken the founder! Right now Power Boy knew that that wasn’t the immediate problem; right now he had to think of a way to get the ladies out of their cylinder traps safely, preferably without blowing up this island in the process.

On the stairwell Thunder and Ferro were staggered by the fire power on display!

Whoever had set this was expecting heavy hitter Legionnaires obviously, as anyone else would have been disintegrated by now. The walls themselves seemed to alter, echoing the effect Gear had exhibited on the material of Legion world with his nannites… there must be similarities in the technology Thunder thought, as she allowed another white hot blast of radiation to bounce from her invulnerable torso. Doug ripped the adaptive walls’ weapon-skin from its moorings along the skirting that ran parallel to the stairs and smashed against the other side of the stairwell, creating a loud ‘whoomph’ as it erupted into white flames.

“Nicely done Doug… now….” And Thunder had flown past in a blur of speed, the air sucked behind her blowing out the flames as she passed.


“She says… “ Had anyone been able to see underneath Doug Nolan’s mask at that exact point they would have seen the expression of dreamy longing on his young mutated face as his Shazam empowered colleague whizzed past. “Dirk is one lucky fella…” he said quietly to himself as he tore down the stairs behind the object of his desire.

At the bottom of the stairwell they found Jed leaning over a couple of cylinders.

“They both look badly bashed up... and I don’t know what to do to stop this countdown.” The gentle purple skinned young man said softly without turning around to his teammates. Thunder and Ferro walked either side of Power Boy and stared in horror as they saw what he meant.

“I’ll sort this.” Mwindaji strode past his comrades. They hadn’t heard him and Sun Boy enter the chamber behind them. The tracker knelt over the cylinder containing Otaki. The psychic had joined the Academy at the same time as Gahaji and then shared the adventure on the Dominators homeworld before being admitted into the main team; they’d shared a few personal moments too, though he tried not to think of them as he gazed down at her pale face within the cylinder. Ferro started to reach out towards the tracker but Sun Boy stopped him.

Gahaji held the ruby of Life tightly in his grip and closed his eyes before stretching out his hand.

As he touched the cylinder that held Otaki it dissolved into a cloud of gas and she rolled onto the floor. Thunder scooped her up protectively quickly and gave the young psychic a brief hug. As Otaki coughed and slowly regained consciousness Gahaji reached across to the cylinder that held Lexikon and repeated the process to free the Tamarean princess.

Sun Boy watched the process and once Lexikon was free he put his hand on the young tracker’s shoulder and said “Well down Mwindaji... good job, but where’s Rokk?”

“Ah...” The tracker closed his eyes for a second. “He’s below us, moving away... forty metres... that way!”

“Thunder...” Sun Boy turned towards her before continuing, “Go get our boy, and don’t be too gentle if there’s someone with him, okay?”

“Done” Cece saluted Dirk with a smile before vanishing in a blur of speed out of the small room, down the stairwell Mwindaji had pointed towards.

In under ten seconds she returned with an unconscious Tyrrazian and Cosmic Boy. The Legion founder looked dazed, unable to recognise anyone present.

“That is not good...” Ferro muttered to himself as Sun Boy put his shoulder under Cosmic Boy’s arm and carried him out of the room. Lexikon appeared to have made a full recovery and the tall Tamarean princess assisted the still woozy Otaki out of the room. Douglas Nolan took one final look around before following his team back up to the desecrated Temple above.

Lydda had been a little disappointed.

She would never admit it but with less than a thousand of the B’Lari left to fight Night Girl was really looking forward to her small team claiming the victory. As Harmonia’s team had slipped the incapacity cuff on the final of the three warmongers that had been in the circular craft at the back of the battle field the army across the plain had all stopped moving; frozen like manikins. Whatever had been controlling the historically spiritual race no longer had the power to force them into this stupid battle.

A holo of the ancient elemental appeared before the Kathooni heroine.

“Do you need our assistance Lydda? Timber Wolf and Backlash could use the exercise...” there was a hint of dry humour as she asked.

“Umm... no. What did you do? The B’Lari have all stopped moving.”

“We incapacitated three Tyrazzians, they were obviously controlling the army. So... we need to consolidate our teams. This is more than a simple battle, the entire planet is in danger. I’ve called Dr Shakespeare and the cruiser over, Tel needs urgent assistance...”

“Oh grife! Will he be okay d’y’know?”

“Hopefully.” Harmonia gave a thin smile. “Sun Boy should have completed his mission by now so I suggest we discuss what we know and come up with an action plan that will resolve this situation once and for all.”

“Okay, we’ll join you in a mo... I think the Flash is enjoying finding new ways to destroy the weapons.”

“Not a bad diversion.” Harmonia muttered before breaking the holo-link.

“Yeah...see you soon. Thanks.” Lydda muttered to the empty air before turning to her team and announcing that they were to group on the cruiser. As she spoke it roared above them and hovered a hundred metres above. As she flew up to the cruiser Lydda Jath took a few seconds to think about Rokk. She knew he was okay, he always was...

The Legion cruiser flew onwards to the far edge of the battle field where Harmonia’s team joined them. Timber Wolf carried the semi-conscious Tel Vole tenderly onboard. Dr Shakespeare immediately took Gravity Kid to the cruisers medi-bay where the battered Legionnaire was put onto a recov-tube.

They were already cruising above the Temple For All awaiting Sun Boy’s team by the time the doctor made his way back to the control deck.

The Green Lantern had spun a bubble around himself and Phantom Girl and they rode in silence just behind Titan and Wildfire as the two powerhouses blew through the sound barrier several times as they flew towards the horizon. They had chosen to start at a hole that sat on the side of a low hill on the other side of the continent, away from the local populations.

According to the scans the furthest drill sites were the deepest; whoever had organised this had been working for a while – scans showed the beginnings of a local fungus like growth on the disturbed ground. Tinya estimated at least six months but as she didn’t know the local flora’s growth rate she couldn’t be sure. As she approached the tunnel she held her hand out so her flight ring could monitor exactly what she saw before her.

Titan led the way as the four Legionnaires dove into the unknown. Using his flight ring to produce a search light they quickly saw that whatever had drilled this hole was doing more; all along the sides were cables and filaments.

<We have company approaching... four minds, they have psi-scramblers but I can sense the static it creates. They’ll be here in twenty seconds> Nasir N’Cubes smooth telepathic voice said in each of their minds.

<Thanks Titan. Okay gays, we need answers so don’t rough them all up too badly...>

As Titan and Wildfire flew forward the Green Lantern shone a pool of light from his power ring onto the pipes that hung from the walls of the cave.

“These wires were created on site Tinya Wazzo... whoever was responsible for creating this aberration used this world’s ore as they dug to build this technology...”

Before he could say anything more there was a loud explosion from further along the tunnel.

<Tyrrazians! Bloody Nass... with weapons!> Wildfire cursed along the flight ring generated telepathic relay. Tinya nodded towards the Green Lantern before flying towards the fight. Behind her the Justice Legionnaire continued to examine the technology before him.

In the distance Phantom Girl could see two unconscious beings on the floor while another, wearing huge golden armour fought Titan and a fourth traded energy blasts with Wildfire from a cybernetic gun arm attachment. Tinya smiled as she floated through the cave floor and drifted through the rock until she estimated she was close enough to the Tyrrazian that was blasting Drake.

With a smile she flew out of the ground and punched the warmonger firmly on the chin, momentarily knocking him off balance and giving Wildfire the opportunity to swoop in and knock the armoured villain flying with an anti-energy fuelled super-sonic punch.

The final villain turned to face Wildfire and Phantom Girl, snarling as he raised his hand to blast them, but as he did Titan flew down and smashed him solidly into the cave wall, ripping strips off the golden armour as he did. The last Tyrrazian struggled but the fight was over in seconds as Nasir N’Cube tore the armour from the warmonger's body.

<I can read his mind now... the armour generated an intense psi-static. It’s not good news, there are over a hundred of these guys on this world and they’ve been here for almost a year. They don’t call themselves Tyrrazians, they’re the Forge Grown... their trying to prove themselves, be the strongest...? His mind is so regimented, so narrow... there’s no option other than to fight.>

<Why are they here Titan? Can you find out?> Phantom Girl replied through the telepathic link.

<This world... whoah! It’s very rich in minerals so they have set about mining and processing them to create... oh, this is not good, they’re turning this planet into a mobile weapon and once done will use it as a staging post to invade the United Planets. This one thinks they are only days away from being able to use it! We got to sort this now as we may not get a second chance...>
