Shield - Laurel Kent of Earth, physical invulnerability, tactile psychometry

Laurel tore down the corridor, turned a corner, chose a right then a left then another right before she barged through a set of doors and found herself in a long quiet corridor with several dozen doors on each side, all ten meters apart. She knew her flight ring was currently broadcasting a jamming field to any passive detection devices so, she hoped, she would not be seen unless it was with a person’s own eyes… this gave her an advantage if she was quick enough to use it.

The invulnerable lass flew down the corridor trying each door gently as she went. She didn’t want to trip any alarms but at the same time she knew she needed to get into one quickly. About half way down the corridor a door opened and she snuck inside. The room was small; a reception of sorts with a couch, two chairs and a small table, some rather bland art covered one wall as a focal point. Across from her was another door. She could see light underneath it and it sounded like someone was slamming something together inside. She touched the doors handle and let her psychometry take over her perception….

Merstan Hooshal Draghme… his palm print on the door handle informed Laurel that he was a small frog-like man with a large interest in control… he monitored the security personnel for the casino above day in and day out… and had progressed through the ranks until now he had a team that did it for him and he watched over them with vicarious glee and a tyrants eye for detail and betrayal. He missed the physical pleasure of dealing with the guards and door staff that couldn’t cope with his regime but had learned to appreciate the large apartment and girls as benefits that the casino provided him with. Laurel was aware of the man’s physical health, his arthritic knees that the casino had been promising to replace for over a year… the whisper that the cyb-tech dept had something for him had kept him from raising this any further in months… Laurel was interested by this snippet of gossip, it sounded like something a bit more than a knee replacement surgery – Cyb-tech? She found it very interesting that a casino would be investing in such things.

Laurel realised that it was time to act. The young invulnerable woman looked down at her costume; black toeless stockings with seven circular cut outs small to large from her ankle up to her thighs on each leg; a pencil thin red belt with the ‘S’ crest of the Family El on the buckle; two black straps from the buckle, diagonally up to her shoulders and down her back, a hands width at their widest. Without a second thought she pushed the straps off her chest and allowed them to hang at her side. She needed to get the security chief’s attention and she learned a long time ago that if there was one thing... well two things really... that could get a man’s attention, well she had exactly what was needed to get the job done.

She pushed the door ajar. Inside sat the toad like man she had read from the door handle. He looked up over a large semicircular desk and gave a greedy smile as his eyes looked her over like butcher might a fresh carcass.

“I hadn’t asked for a special visitor... but come in sweetie, you girls know I’ll never say no to l’il pretty company.” He leered towards her.

Laurel smiled and strode in, closing the door quietly behind her.

She left under a minute later, her Distorter showing Security Sub-Chief Draghme. In her hands Laurel held the now unconscious and bound man’s pass key. Her psychometry had told her exactly where she needed to go to get to the bottom of this. There was a wooden panelled control centre two levels below were where the Board met, and she knew that the answers she needed would be found inside.

Invisible Kid - Jacques Foccart of Earth, invisibility
Kinetix - Zoe Saugin of Aleph, telekinetic animation
Kid Quantum - Jazmin Cullen of Xanthu, creation of temporal quantum bubbles, flight
Thirteen – Dann Hortra of Naltor, line of sight probability manipulation

Invisible Kid hovered above his teammates, out of sight.

The show didn’t interest him so he took the opportunity to watch the crowd sat in similar small booths within the hall. There was something not right here but Jacques couldn’t figure out what it was... had he forgotten something? He needed to concentrate now... concentrate...

Jacques Foccart scanned the room, paying particular attention to the entrance ways though nothing struck him as out of place...

......................

“We’ve got the chemical that gives him his ability already. That thief was quick to hand it over on Tarkon Galtos, never even knew what it was... Keep this one alive in case we need a hostage and get that damn telepath in here to mine his brain for what it’s worth already, will you?”

.................

Kinetix knew she had to do it.

The show had seemed to go on forever now and it was really not her thing. The initial shock value had come and gone and now her surprise and curiosity had vanished and all she felt was a little bit sorry for the performers; for all their forced smiles there was a definite sense that each of them would much rather be anywhere but here right now. They tried to hide it but she could see they were as bored as she felt by the display. Zoe looked to her left. Dann appeared to be relaxed; a bland smile on his face, his muscular arms stretched out along the back of the semi-circular couch the three junior Legionnaires shared. She knew it was wrong but Zoe felt safe around him so without stopping to think she nestled in towards him and closed her eyes as she leant her head against his broad shoulder. Zoe Saugin felt secure...

..........................

“Her DNA shows no sign of any mutation though there is an element of something... perhaps it’s mystical, these read outs are screwy... I don’t know what this is registering in her brain scan. I don’t think we will be able to get a decent graft from this one. Damn it! Well we’ve no record of her prior to the Legion worth a stuff so we don’t need to be too gentle, she’s new so we probably won’t get too much of a ransom. Even Hot Zone isn’t too bothered by her, other than occasional pieces on how awful her latest outfit is...”

...........................

Thirteen was struggling.

The show on stage was dull.

Sure watching live sex was initially exciting, intriguing... it always brought up questions when he’d watched anything like this before; was that how he moved? Did he do that act in that way? Would that even be comfortable? Would he try that sort of behaviour with a long term partner or leave it to the single-nighters he wouldn’t need to look in the eye the next day?

On the few occasions Dann Hortra had witnessed a show like this he had always been struck be the same over riding thought: Had his any of his partners looked that bored while he had pleasured himself and he had never noticed?

Zoe leant in towards him and he resisted the urge to flinch away. He had noticed her looking at him several times now and was well aware what she was thinking behind her hungry eyes; he’d seen this sort of reaction many times before and it was wasn’t what he was looking for. Despite Naltorian’s being legendary for their openness about sexuality he didn’t enjoy being objectified in such a blatant manner... he knew that needy look hid a desperation that would irritate him if he ever accepted the implicit offer it held. The young Naltorian thought that if he wanted a pet he’d have a puppy. It at least would be loyal.

Dann Hortra continued to give his practiced smile as he watched the rather dull show before them all the while he wished he was anywhere but here...

.....................

“This one’s a mutant, and from the limited information we got after he joined the Legion he affects probability. Look at this here -his helix is constantly in flux... actually I think he’s constantly manipulating his own probability on a subconscious level. I can try to grab something to work with though there are no guarantees... Records show he was brought up in the High Seers household on Naltor so he should be worth something too if we can’t get anything else out of him.”

.......................

Kid Quantum wanted to leave.

She hadn’t been impressed when the couples came onto the stage and started to... well, do what they were doing. At first she had been so surprised she had actually laughed a nervous chortle that hid her shock. She quickly took to watching the crowd around them instead, the Legionnaires no longer being their primary focus. The casino’s patrons appeared transfixed by what was happening before them. All eyes appeared wide open and staring to the front.

Jazmin felt something... a cold finger ran along her back. Something else else wasn’t playing out right here.

There it was! A blip. Like a holo... a sudden freezing of motion, for less than a second but still...

Jazmin took a deep breath and thought about what it might mean. She composed her face so her surprise didn’t show and took a quick glance at her teammates. They were obviously not aware of ... well she wasn’t sure what but whatever it was she knew she better do something about it. As part of her training on Xanthu she had experienced full immersion simulations so she had a fair idea what was happening here.

She could see that Zoe had leant in towards Dann; the poor girl had been so confused by Gahaji’s poor behaviour recently se was desperate for some validation from someone. Bless her, Jazmin knew that Zoe wouldn’t get what she wanted from Thirteen, no matter how defined his six pack.

Jazmin smiled as an idea struck her.

She leant across Dann’s front, placing one arm on his shoulder while reaching out for Zoe, in an apparent act to get the three of them together. She felt Thirteen’s body stiffen as he resisted moving away; Jazmin didn’t have time to explain right now as she touched Zoe’s hand and let lose a quantum bubble around them. As long as she held her comrades they would be immune to the effect of her creating a bubble of frozen time...

Mission: Investigation of Meta activity on Ventura.

Chameleon Boy – Espionage Squad leader, Reep Daggle of Durla, shape changer

The initial blast had knocked Reep out but he had retained his altered form as a Vanijor sand fly, slightly smaller than a bumble bee, which had been overlooked by the metas as they had chased after Laurel.

He thought it must have only been seconds he was unconscious though when he awoke the four beings that he had seen approach were gone and the corridor looked as if someone had detonated a small bomb in it. Chameleon Boy was experienced enough to know that going by the destruction around him had the blast caught him directly he would not have survived in this form.

Whoever had done this had known they were here... which was interesting as Henry had warped them in directly and the Distorters on their belts should have kept them hidden from any sensor array. That left either very bad luck timing their arrival, someone giving the Casino a warning of their imminent arrival, or some form of detection that went beyond what Brainiac 5 could dream off. Other than there being a psychic on site Reep Daggle was stumped to come up with anything. Either a telepathic field that they had disturbed with their flight ring generated comm-link, or perhaps a Naltorian... the Casinos of Ventura had a lot of money at their disposal so he didn’t discount either. That meant he shouldn’t use the comm-link, at least not unless it was a desperate situation, so if he were to rescue his teammates it would be down to good old fashioned detective work!

Whatever the reason he knew he had to get moving, whoever was responsible for this destruction would not be far away and he needed to find Laurel and get some back up. He wasn’t sure where they may have taken her but he reasoned the chances were in his favour that they would have gone back in the direction they came from.

The Vanijor sand fly buzzed along the corridor, away from the destruction.

After several minutes Reep came to a large round door. The symbol on the side read simply “No access”, which he thought made it very interesting... landing on the wall beside it Reep considered his options. The probability that he would be able to change into something strong enough to smash through the doors was unlikely and that would also ruin any surprise he may have, that meant he had to either get in while the doors were open – which at present wasn’t very likely – or he find another way in. The multi-facetted eyes of the small fly quickly found a ventilation shaft. Even in this tiny form the Durlan Legionnaire could manage a smile.

Another amazing batch of posts Harbi.. especially loved your looks into the minds of Zoe Dann and Jaz, Jaz being smart enough to figure out the sim was awesome. Laurel is kicking ass and I love seeing her psychometry in battle.

Also more awesome fight scenes with your big group. I love how you manage to look at their inner thoughts while they are in battle

As always more more more!

Mission: Report of imminent war on Skarford vi, on board Legion Cruiser Alpha

By the time Dr Shakespeare got around to examining Otaki she was already protesting that she was perfectly fine and ready to go straight back onto the mission. Although his scans could find nothing wrong with the young psychic Dr Shakespeare still advised she rest for 24 hours. She gave the doctor a withering look as she said “Gee, thanks for that... yeah, thank you doctor.” Her scorn dripped.

He smiled brightly as he turned to face her. “Bina, I know you are sensible enough not to put yourself into too much danger... no more than usual for this lot anyway... but given how badly affected Rokk was by the critter that trapped you I’m not going to allow you anywhere near the front line, so you can deal with that or not, but you are still taking a mandatory medical 24 hours rest.”

For all he projected an air of self confidence and calm Otaki could feel his doubts; something had shaken him and he was unsure what to do next.

“Okay, sorry... Are you alright there Doc? Is there anything I can help you with?” She asked softly.

“Hah... ah the joy of dealing with psychic patients, eh? Well... thanks for the offer but I don’t know... Rokk’s condition is what’s worrying me as he’s not responding to any stimulation...”

“Can I see him? Perhaps I can give you some information about what’s going on inside.” She pointed to her temple as she spoke. Dr Shakespeare smiled at Bina Nawoti again, this time though there was genuine warmth in it.

“What about me Doctor?” Lexikon’s rich voice rang across the medi-bay.

Dr Shakespeare called up a holo which gave the readings from his initial scan of the Tamarean princess when she was brought aboard the cruiser.

“Oh... you’re fit to go, though try not to walk into anymore traps this time.” Otaki elbowed the doctor in the ribs, he had wanted her to take a day’s rest but let their Tamarean colleague get straight back to work.

“Tamareans... they’re tough as nails, really...” He said meekly as he led Otaki out of the main medi-bay towards a side booth where Cosmic Boy currently rested.

For all of her psychic prowess Bina Nawoti wondered if she had just been played.

Sun Boy looked at the large team before him as they stood around the command deck of the cruiser.

He had not always been a fan of Harmonia’s leadership style but she had been right to call a briefing – this situation could go dreadfully wrong if there was any misinformation and this world with it’s incredibly diverse bio-sphere would suffer catastrophically if they didn’t deal with this situation correctly first time. The team needed to know what was at stake.

The holo of Phantom Girl at his shoulder had just explained what her team had discovered. The Tyrazzians – or the Forge Chosen, as they called themselves – had excavated many thousands of klicks of underground caverns and used the ore they dug through to fashion instruments to further their plans.

Titan’s telepathy had confirmed that the warmongers plan was to permanently alter this world, weaponising and moving it in the process. The resulting destruction of the rich and vital biosphere was absolutely irrelevant to the red skinned killers. This world was so rich in minerals and metals that they could create enough weapons for the next century. The Forge Chosen had taken control of the B’Lari as a first line of defence in case anyone chose to investigate this world before it was ready to be torn out of orbit and pointed in towards the richer worlds of the United Planets. In their war-like glee they didn’t realise that this action would Legion to them.

According to the information Titan had taken there were still approximately 100 of the red skinned warmongers on this world and they knew the Legion was here so would be doing everything in their power to complete their plan before they could be stopped. He was able to get an estimation of the important loci-points and from this Sun Boy had suggested the team split up again to shut these nerve centres down before anymore damage could be inflicted on this planet.

Dirk had Henry warp in a further supply of incapacity cuffs; the Warmongers would face justice for all their crimes on this once pristine world. With a vicious smile Dirk divvied up the team again and offered a challenge: whichever brought in the most of the Forge Chosen Warmongers would earn a night out on his personal expense account to his favourite night spots on Earth. There were several cheers as offered this incentive.

Night Girl would take the Flash and Karate Kid again, along with Dragonmage who was itching to get back into action. Xao nodded towards Lydda and made his way across the command deck of the cruiser to stand beside her.

Harmonia would again lead Timber Wolf, Dragonwing, Backlash and Gazelle.

With Dirk would be Thunder, Ferro and Mwindaji alongside Lexikon who was eager for some retribution for the earlier sneak attack that had taken out the team in the Temple For All.

Power Boy had volunteered to stay on the cruiser with Dr Shakespeare to protect Rokk and Tel. Otaki grudgingly said she’d stay as well. Kent smiled as she did.

Night Girl and Harmonia’s team boarded the second cruiser – their missions would take them to the other side of the planet, while Sun Boy pointed downwards; his team would start from the Temple below. With Phantom Girl already leading a team in the tunnels off the far coast of the continent Dirk was sure they would have this wrapped up in a matter of hours. Fingers crossed...

Legion World, Sol system, 2.5 light minutes due galactic north of Saturn.

Chameleon Girl - Yera Allon of Durla, shape changer
Colossal Boy - Gim Allon of Earth, increase personal size and mass at will
Brainiac 5 – Legion World manager, Professor Querl Dox of Colu, 12th level intelligence
Tellus - Ganglios of Hykraius, telepathy and telekinesis
Glorith - of Xerox, manipulation of magical energies
Wonder Woman - Princess Phoebe of Amazonia, incredible strength, speed, invulnerability, space flight, carries magical weapons.
Danielle Foccart –Kid Computo – Technical support - technopathic communication and control over advanced technology

“You sure you want to go Gim?” Yera sounded disappointed as she asked, though her husband knew that it wasn’t with him per se; she had taken him onto Mission Monitoring duty for a reason. Yera obviously wanted to talk about something and if he left to go on the Ventura rescue mission she may not have the chance to talk for another day or so.

“Reep’s my oldest friend Yera, you know I’ve gotta go help him. Sorry darlin’ we’ll catch up when we get back. Promise ya!” He kissed her lightly on the top of the head before leaving the Monitor Control room.

In the room with Henry’s control panel Brainiac 5 waited for the team to arrive. He had not been impressed when Element Lad had asked him to lead this mission – Mon El, Tyroc and Duplicate Girl were all close by so could just as easily taken charge, leaving him to complete the current run of temporal experiments he was running... With a deep breath and a small sigh Querl Dox had switched off the experiment he had been working on continuously for almost six standard days, called up an icon screen and requested assistance on a rescue mission.

All they ever seemed to do these days was rescue teammates. The recent influx of new members had obviously had the unforeseen side effect of destabilised the team’s professionalism. This was something he would need to consider and discuss with the Senior Team at their next meeting.

Danielle Foccart stood at his side. The young Techno-path had refused point blank to leave, stating that her brother needed her. Brainiac 5 was surprised by her sudden passion and was tempted to refuse allowing her to join them but he knew she could probably take control of Henry’s warping technology if she was determined to so if she was with him at least he would be able to keep her safe. He casually pressed Glorith’s icon on his comm unit ensuring that the mystic that Danielle had grown so close to was present as well.

Within two minutes of the alert being sent his team was present and Querl gave a quick briefing.

“Chameleon Boy’s team have encountered a problem. Our role is primarily to rescue and retrieve them. If we get the opportunity to shut down the outfit that gave them problems we will, though that is not our main objective. Do you understand? Okay... Danielle, Glorith and Tellus are with me. Henry has established roughly where four of our teammates are and as their flight rings show them to be unconscious we can only assume they are being held against their will so we will warp in and get them out of there. Colossal Boy and Wonder Woman, our opponents managed to take out four Legionnaires in short order so we must expect heavy resistance. Your job is to keep them off our back and give us time to free our colleagues. Are we ready?”

A warp spun into existence before them and Brainiac 5 motioned Wonder Woman to go through first. Even as she flew through there was the sound of an explosion. Colossal Boy smiled as he dove straight through after the Amazonian princess.

Brainiac 5 sighed.

Starkling – Unknown, telepathic swarm-being composed of indestructible ball bearing sized components.
I.Z.O.R. -Gear ii – infrastructure manager - nannite collective being, technomorph
Ming Sul - Amp Girl - investigative officer, hyper-enhancement of her own sensory capacities

Gear was the first to arrive.

This technically was not correct, as some of the nannites that composed the techno-organic being were already within the engineering area he had been asked to investigate, so it would be more apt to say Gear was already present. Or a part of him was anyway...

Like all Linsnarian’s... actually, this too was a misdirection... there was only one Linsnarian and it had literally trillions of component parts which shaped themselves into over thirteen million separate ‘identities’. I.Z.O.R. was one of them. The original replicating nannites cell that had spawned all life on Linsnar was over a billion years old and its primary programming to replicate still lived on.

The part of Linsnar that identified itself as Gear had its own agenda that included learning as much as possible about the organic creatures that had spread so quickly through the Milky Way in the last fewMillennia. To this end it had observed then taken on the form of a being that looked somewhat similar to one of the dominant bipedal species. It learned the ways of obedience and acquiescence, sought out and studied the art of servitude and in applying these skills alongside its preternatural technical genius it became invaluable to the meat creatures it was studying.

Like all of the Linsnar identities Gear had an invisible cloud of nannite particles that surrounded its primary body. Wherever it went these tiny molecule-sized machines attached themselves to the structures they encountered and with voracious appetite devoured what they found to recycle it as more nannites. These tiny new ‘cells’ would lay dormant until the primary body’s identity wished them to act.

With Chameleon Girl calling upon the Infrastructure Manager’s assistance to investigate the strange shadows she had recorded down here the primary body had activated the patina of his cells, and as the primary body dissolved into a fog and faded into a floor ten levels above the form that would be recognised from Webber’s World to here on Legion World began to materialise on this lower engineering deck. Within twenty seconds the nannites form had assembled itself into a facsimile of the being that the Legionnaires knew as Gear. As his form solidified the automatic lights popped into life bathing the area with a warm daylight-like ambience.

The young techno-organic appearing man surveyed the level before him. This was a purely engineering section that housed some of the planetoids heat conversion pumps and the majority of the automated waste recycling systems vats and furnaces. It would be highly unlikely there would be much of interest down here for an intruder to steal or sabotage... but still, in the centuries Gear had been amongst the United Planets he had learned that the organic creatures could be highly irrational.

He heard a rattling, as if a hail storm had erupted behind him and turning he saw the swirling mass of the new Legionnaire they called Starkling fly along a linkway towards him.

<There is another presence with us I.Z.O.R. we can sense the feelings it generated. Have you been able to locate it? It is faint...>

“Not as yet Starkling.” As he spoke Gear’s left arm appeared to wither and spiral in on itself until it resembled a sensor dish.

The composite Legionnaire known as Starkling swirled around in a mass in the centre of the area for several minutes, the two beings silent as they endeavoured to track down the source of the faint telepathic presence that Starkling had felt in their own unique ways.

Almost as if they were not aware Ming Sul walked along the corridor towards them.

“Hey...“ She called out as a greeting, “According to Yera’s scans the shadow was first seen here...” She pointed to a console, “Then over here...” The recently appointed young investigative officer used her flight ring to hover over the place where the second shadow had been seen. Seemingly defying gravity even further she slowly rotated herself head to toe until she was fully upside down, hovering above the spot. Using one of her hands to hold back her pony tails her eyes glowed faintly as she activated her sensory abilities.

“Size 5 shoe... running boot I’d say by what I can see of the tread. Here, look at these impressions.” She had scanned the area with her flight ring, flipped herself upright and used the ring’s holo-function to project her findings into the air before them. The imprint was so faint as to be invisible to the naked eye but Amp Girl found it, and using holo-tech shared it clearly.

“From this I can only assume it was one person...”

<Ming Sul, please educate us who has infiltrated our base so we can endeavour to capture them>

“Ha, Starkling, it’s okay, if I’m right we won’t need to capture her..." The new member of the Support Team grinned, "...you know her as well as I do as she was a mentor briefly at the Academy back on Earth. That’s where we met her first anyway. The boot print makes me think she’s trying to come back. I bet you a month’s salary this was made by Jenni Ognats. Our missing teammates must have found a way to stretch the dimensional barriers. Now all we need to do is find a way to assist them getting back home...”

Shield - Laurel Kent of Earth, physical invulnerability, tactile psychometry

It had been surprisingly easy to make her way down to the board room she had been shown in her psychometric vision.

At the second security stop, where she knew the clearance that Security Sub-Chief Draghme had would run out she had snapped an incapacity cuff on the guards wrist and using the distorter and her phychometry she had assumed the guards identity. A burly clone grown idiot called Urdrith ‘Man-snapper’ Dill; he had been a promising wrestler in the shows held in the casino above until gambling debts had driven him to seek additional work. Security had suited his less than imaginative personality well. He didn’t miss wrestling, there were benefits to keeping his mouth shut and doing what he was told that he had never foreseen; like, not having to fight every day of his life so he could afford to pay his room tax. Urdrith Dill rather enjoyed that perk more than all the rest though right at the present moment he was enjoying a dreamless unconscious state, tucked under his desk while a Legionnaire used his appearance and security passes to get to the one place he had been told was to be kept safe at all times.

As the twelve foot tall door swung open Laurel had a momentary panic... this was too easy! What was it Durgo said at the Academy – if it’s easy then chances are you ain’t achieved what you thought you had. Her former Academy tutor’s words of warning echoed in her mind as she strode into the huge dark wooden panelled room. The board room was dominated by a massive oval highly polished table, easily fifty feet long.

“What are you...? Ah... it is you. Come, come, we have much to discuss now.” At the far end sat an old man, his hover chair fitted with obvious medical equipment. Laurel didn’t stop to ask she strode around the great table towards the shadowy figure. If her guess was right this would be Lord Druflr himself, and the one person that she knew she would be able to get answers for all her questions from.

As she got close the old man turned his head towards her and offered a surprisingly strong smile.

“You can drop the holo-disguise now, as convincing as it is. I’ve been waiting to meet you Legionnaire for such a long time now it would be rude of you to not show yourself.”

More on Jaz and co next time IB, and Laurel learns the cost of a little bit of knowledge. The big group on Skarford vi are in for a fight yet so hang on as they deal with 100 angry Tyr's. Fun, fun, fun!

This is all I have until probably the new year now so hope you are still enjoying.

This is thrilling! Nice to see two scenes of the cavalry coming in/team regrouping and getting ready to kick butt, an advantage of having such a large team is being able to throw so many warm superpowered bodies at any problem and using a variety of powers.

Brainy's observation about the lack of professionalism of the new team members is interesting. I would have to go back and check to see if it is totally fair, as veterans such as Cosmic Boy and Dawnstar have been captured recently too.

Laurel is in a bind it seems, but she has shown herself to be quite crafty so I am not too worried.

Having Amp Girl figure out that XS is making headway in coming back is nice! I look forward to the development of that storyline!

Laurel is really getting a chance to shine here, I am digging it!

I loved the bit of background on Gear and Thirteen as well!

These are some really great missions Harbinager.

Shield is really showing her chops here. i like how she recalls L's advice.
I'm curious to see who this old man is.

Brainy makes a good point that they do seem to spend a lot of time save each others teams lately.

I absolutely love how you've described Gear. All of the nannites coming from one original componet that just keeps replicating and continuing a function to study humans is wicked cool.

I'm interested to see if Jazmin's tactic works and breaks them from their trance.

Can't wait for more!

I read this V.4 this morning and my husband said, twice, "That must be a really good book you're reading!", I was so absorbed in it.

You're managing an incredible, large cast of characters and it doesn't feel like any one is either neglected or hogging the show. The conversation rings true and is individualistic. That's great use of Encyclopedia Galactica and SP Report to communicate a lot of information so we don't have one character presenting it all in a long, expository speech. It was also very successful to present the Flash's activity by using one word per line as she dashed about; in the comic, this would have required multiple panels.

Starkling and Gear (and the Falromoids) are truly alien. You're talking future, girl!

It's good to see Harmonia get angry, she seemed so transcendentally calm (and boring) in the comic. I love how you've taken the original characters, given them more depth or changed their functions, and added a host of new and unusual members for the team.

Ah, the Legion - where else could you hear "Planetary war alert" and people just drop what they're doing to go help their fellow Legionnaires?

At last! Lydda has a tech solution to needing darkness for her power! I was griping with another Legion fan that Brainy could have come up with something for her, but didn't.

Thanks for all your kind words everyone, sorry I haven't been around much but I was floored by a nasty chest infection before Xmas and have only just about caught up with everything.

I noticed I've called the Falmoroids the Falromoids too... Whoops, sorry. Thankfully the Edit function is a wonder smile

I've got about eight posts written out but need to edit something so once that is done I'll be posting some new stuff, hopefully by the end of the week.

Thanks again.

Hope you're completely well soon, Harbi.

Fat Cramer's recent marathon read of your story up to now has convinced me to do one of my own sometime this week. And of course, I will comment accordingly.

Starkling – Unknown, telepathic swarm-being composed of indestructible ball bearing sized components.
I.Z.O.R. -Gear ii – infrastructure manager - nannite collective being, technomorph
Ming Sul - Amp Girl - investigative officer, hyper-enhancement of her own sensory capacities
Chameleon Girl - Yera Allon of Durla, shape changer

Like a nest of swarming ants finally breaking free of their underground confines to reach the freedom of the sky Starkling's component parts dispersed in the air.

The small ball bearing like particles scattered across the engineering area they were on as the hive being searched for its former Academy mentor. Gear smiled as he watched. His nannites had done something similar on a microscopic scale across the whole planetoids now that Amp Girl had alerted them what to watch for. In the Monitor Room Yera gave a small whoop as the team reported what they had found. She would be glad to see the three missing Legionnaires back in their home reality, and, she thought happily to herself, once they were back Gim might find it easier to give up being full time on the team and want to join her with the Academy.

Element lad, Tyroc and Mon El were tied up with the ambassadorial visit, due to finish in under an hour thankfully, though that only left Duplicate Girl of the Senior Team free to deal with any emergency if one arose. Chameleon Girl didn't think this constituted that but felt it should be shared anyway. They all deserved a little bit of good news. And it also would give Yera a chance to discuss the Potential running of the Academy with one of its longest serving tutors... Yes, thought Yera Allon, sometimes the Holy Egg blessed those that listened to it and pointed a little fortune towards their way.

Mission: Investigation of Meta activity on Ventura.

Kinetix - Zoe Saugin of Aleph, telekinetic animation
Kid Quantum - Jazmin Cullen of Xanthu, creation of temporal quantum bubbles, flight
Thirteen – Dann Hortra of Naltor, line of sight probability manipulation

The three young Legionnaires appeared to be hanging in a weird non-space; there were no colours or horizon, nothing to given sense of direction or distance. Initially Zoe had freaked out though very quickly Jazmin calmed her telekinetic colleague as she kept a tight grip on her arm as she explained why the simulation they had been immersed in had failed. Her quantum field would easily disrupt its sensitive command matrix.

Thirteen had made a joke comment about how he should have known it as fake by how boring the floor show had been and the two girls shared and embarrassed laugh.

"Okay... so what can we do now?" Kinetix asked her friends.

"I can only affect things I can see so..." Thirteen gestured around them, letting the empty vista be the finish of his sentence. The three young Legionnaires stared silently around for a moment.

"I gotta tell you, I'm unsure... If I stop the quantum field we'll be back in the Sim, but while we're here in this place it disrupts the matrix enough that we’re free, kind of... any ideas you two as I don't think there’s much we can do...."

"Okay, we got to figure something out... so how far do you reckon you extended your quantum bubble in the real world Jaz?" the Naltorian asked.

Kinetix appeared to be concentrating as her friends spoke and without warning she popped out of existence!

Ventura, rescue mission.

Colossal Boy - Gim Allon of Earth, increase personal size and mass at will
Brainiac 5 – Legion World manager, Professor Querl Dox of Colu, 12th level intelligence
Tellus - Ganglios of Hykraius, telepathy and telekinesis
Glorith - of Xerox, manipulation of magical energies
Wonder Woman - Princess Phoebe of Amazonia, incredible strength, speed, invulnerability, space flight, carries magical weapons.
Danielle Foccart –Kid Computo – Technical support - technopathic communication and control over advanced technology

Wonder Woman flew through the warp first.

Even before she had fully materialised on the other side an electrical blast ricocheted off of her side. Standing around her were almost a dozen beings, some with fists cackling with energy signature, others with cybernetics on display. It was obvious they had been expecting her.

Princess Phoebe landed squarely amongst the group, several more energy blasts struck her, each to no avail.

"Do you really want to do this?" as she asked another bolt of searing fire struck the back of her head. "Well okay, I tried to be nice..."

Colossal Boy flew through the warp just in time to witness the Amazonian racing through the meta-beings before her, smashing them aside like reeds in a storm. Before Gim had the opportunity to grow in size she had knocked them all unconscious apart from one who she bound in her magic rope. The young woman she had kept conscious struggled and twisted but despite her best efforts found it useless to resist.

Before the Legionnaires could interrogate their prisoner a blaster fired apparently from mid air and took the back of the bound girls head off killin her instantly.

"Damn it, an invisible opponent!" Gim cried out as he swung his massive arms in the direction that the blaster fire had come from in vain. from behind the giant Legionnaire Brainiac 5 stepped through the warp, instantly analysing the situation.

"Tellus, can you find our invisible friend please." As The Coluan spoke there was a grunt as an unseen foe smacked against Dox's force field."ah, it seems you won't need to." Gim Allon's enormous hand slapped the floor beside wher the noise had come from and with a cry of pain a small man with a large gun faded into view and before he was fully conscious Wonder Woman had wrapped her glowing lasso around him.

Glorith and Danielle Foccart had joined their teammates by this point and before giving their prisoner any attention Brainiac 5 turned to speak to the two girls and the Hykraian who had followed him through Henry's warp.

"Danielle, can you locate your brother and our friends please. Glorith, I want you to look after Danielle while we are here as a priority. Tellus, ensure we are not troubled by another unseen opponent." Before any of them could reply he had turned back to the prisoner and started to ask questions.

As Professor Dox got the information he needed from their captive Colossal Boy shrunk down to his normal size and approached Wonder Woman.

"Good job there Phoebe, though could I ask a small favour?"

"Of course Gim, what is it?"

"You see, in this dimension the Legion is a team so... could you leave a few for the rest of us please? You hogged all the fun there y'know..." Gim smiled cheekily as he asked and his Amazon teammate gave a quick barking laugh in reply.

"Professor Dox..." Danielle's voice was small but everyone stopped talking to listen to her. "The security AI just told me where Jacques and Jazmin and Zoe and Dann are but there is a problem."

Danielle Foccart stared at herfeet, her expression unreadable.

Mission: Report of imminent war on Skarford vi
Phantom Girl – Senior Team member, Tinya Wazzo of Bgtzl Dimension, intangibility
Wildfire - Drake Burroughs of Earth, composed of sapient anti-energy, extreme strength, speed, durability, space flight, anti-energy blasts
Titan - Nasir N’Cube of Titan, telepathy, and with the Shazam abilities – immense strength, speed, indestructibility, space flight, wisdom
Green Lantern, Chloraja of J586, sapient plant possessing a Green Lanterns ring

The probes had already drilled long tunnels that created an underground network connecting the far reaches of the world. Within these tunnels further machinery mined and fashioned the rich elemental strata, in turn producing more machines to dig and mine this distant and until recently unspoilt planet.

Phantom Girl’s had seen this type of technology before and was aware that it could only mean one thing… Trouble... She felt strangely weary as she realised this would be another mission where the outcome would leave a terrorized population without the resolutions they deserved; their planet and population had been brutalized by these Tyrrazian thugs and the Legion would scratch it up as another victory before flying off to bash another despot or gang of villains or idiot with a grudge or...

Wildfire had flown ahead down one of the tunnels, destroying the hulking drilling machinery he found as he went. Tinya turned to Nasir and asked if his telepathy had picked up any other living being close by. The Shazam empowered psychic smiled as he replied, “There were three of them but that was before Wildfire got to them. Now all I pick up are their dream states.”

“You certain Nasir?”

“No… there are more throughout the tunnels though we are not close… they are scattered on small groups throughout this planet’s crust…”

“Okay…. We’ve got to assume know they know we’re here, still there are enough Legionnaires here to stop Darkseid so this won’t be too difficult. I hope not anyway…” Tinya gave her telepathic teammate a weak smile. Tinya felt the cold finger of foreboding touch her spine and she knew Nasir had felt it too. “Go help Drake, he’ll be insufferable if he stops the Tyrrazians single handed.”

The junior team member smiled before vanishing in a blur of speed.

After Titan had flown off Phantom Girl approached the green Lantern.

“Are you okay there Chloraja?” She had found the Justice Legionnaire to be difficult to speak to, his race’s natural shyness alongside the distance he had put between himself and his new teammates in this dimension meant she found him to be socially awkward. It was difficult not to criticise him. The green Lantern had been examining some of the machinery, his power ring’s light glistened against the conduit piping that hung along the walls of the tunnel.

“They are connecting the distant parts of this planet through their technology… under the ground, drawing up minerals to fuel its own growth…. it is spread out like a root system…” The one eyed alien turned and gave a brief smile, “… and if there’s one thing I know it’s root systems.”

“Can you stop it?”

“Without a doubt. Please stand back.” A pulse of emerald light erupted from his ring and blasted the alien technology against the wall. Like a fire disintegrating a fuse wire the emerald energy burned its way along the conduits and out of sight along the tunnel in both directions. “I estimate it will take four hours or so to fully incapacitate this abhorrent growth.”

“Wow! That is amazing! Thank you ‘Lantern, I’d better let the other teams know what to expect.” Tinya Wazzo forgot her earlier feelings about the Green Lantern as she resisted the urge to give him a hug. She turned away from the green Lantern and spoke into her flight ring. If the other teams were having as much luck she knew this would quickly turn into a rout. The momentary sense of foreboding she had felt was forgotten as she realised that the team were dealing with the issues before them and the Tyrrazians didn’t stand a chance. In that instant Tinya realised that she had not had a single moment where she felt this happy… this content… in months, not since Jo had been murdered, and as she acknowledged this to herself she knew that wherever Jo Nah’s spirit was at that moment he was proud of her and cheering her on.

At the back of Tinya’s mind the feeling of foreboding gave a metaphorical little cough and once again Phantom Girl found her smile faltering.

Harmonia, Professor Harmonia Li of Earth, natural elemental
Timber Wolf - Brin Londo of Zuun, enhanced strength, speed, agility, reflexes and senses
Dragonwing - Marya Pai of Earth, breathes Dragon fire and acid
Backlash, Mrruaw M’Nau of Simballi, enhanced strength, speed, senses, absorbs kinetic energy to boost own size and mass
Gazelle - J’izl Dtutuu from the Khundian Battle Brigade, of Khundia Prime, enhanced strength, speed, agility and metabolic control

Backlash barrelled into the two Tyrrazians knocking them flying.

One was an obvious cyborg with two additional robotic arms that tried to grab the Tigerram as he had charged. The alien warrior didn’t stand a chance as Timber Wolf spun down from above and brutally kicked him into a wall where Gazelle pounced and smacked him unconscious. The Tigerram currently stood at ten feet tall and almost twenty long with a huge grin across his broad face.

“These warriors are simple sport, are they not?” Backlash’s deep voice rumbled along the passageway.

“Nice bit of exercise I’d say.” Gazelle said with a chuckle.

“I dunno… we’re spreading ourselves out pretty thinly I’d say.” Brin Londo muttered to himself.

Behind the three Legionnaires, Harmonia hovered with Dragonwing.

“Timber Wolf makes a valid point Marya… I find it odd that the Tyrrazzinas spent so long building these tunnels to then announce themselves with a nuclear bomb in the Falmoroids great Nest and amass an army on the plains beforethe Temple, initiating this war that drew us here. We are missing something…” The ancient elemental stroked her chin in a mannerism that reminded Marya Pai of Brainiac 5’s expressions when the Coluan genius was contemplating something.

“Maybe they’re scared of the Falmoroids Harmonia? Telepaths aren’t universally trusted y’know…”

“That may be part of it. Thank you Marya… perhaps you would like to join Brin in dealing with the warmongers now…”

With an almost casual dismissal Harmonia Li turned away from her flame breathing comrade and brought her flight ring up to her eye level. Behind her she didn’t see Dragonwing stick her tongue out before flying down the tunnel to join her colleagues.

“Titan… Nasir… I need your assistance, are you free to join me to the Great Nest? I believe I may have a potential solution to our problem.”

The holo of the tall telepath smiled as he agreed to meet the former Legion leader on board the cruiser she had flown here.

“Timber Wolf…” Harmonia announced “Can you ensure the team deal with the Tyrrazians, I’m needed elsewhere.”

“Uh… yeah, sure, have fun. Don’t forget to come pick us up when you’re done. ” Brin Londo’s voice echoed through the comm system in reply.

Sun Boy – Deputy Leader, Dirk Morgna of Earth, generation of intense light and heat
M’Windaji - Gahaji of Kiringyaga, super tracker, carries the Ruby of Life allowing tactile transformative magicks
Ferro - Douglas Nolan of Earth, can assume invulnerable iron isotope form
Thunder, Cecelia Becks of 21st Century Earth, immense strength, speed, indestructibility, space flight, wisdom
Lexikon, Princess Daheenisha of Tamara iv, enhanced speed, strength, durability, flight, omni-linguist

Mwindaji led the team along a steep tunnel; Lexikon and Ferro were at his side while Sun Boy and Thunder took up the rear.

They had encountered two small groups of the Tyrrazian warmongers. Both had been quickly dispatched, Lexikon being particularly eager to deal with the intruders as she flew directly into them like a laser guided missile. Ferro had laughed as he kneed one in the groin and quickly punched his opponent on the side of their head as they crumpled forward. Mwindaji had transformed another Warmonger’s cyborg arm into an inflatable ball before kicking him firmly in the solar plexus. As the Tyrrazian fell Gahaji had slapped a set of incapacity cuffs on his opponent.

“This is not right Dirk.”

“What do you mean Cece?”

“We are being led into this world’s crust chasing after these petty villains. Surely you can see this must be a red herring… this whole war thing we’re dealing with, it doesn’t need this many of the Legion to sort it out does it?”

“Yeah... I think you’re right. Thank you, we need to talk to Tinya, Lydda and Harmonia…”

Night Girl, Lydda Jath of Kathoon, incredible strength and durability out of direct sunlight
Karate Kid – Mithindrivithis Ngandraffa of Lythyl, strength, heightened reflexes, mimetic motor learning giving incredible martial skills
Flash, Terri Sam’aa of Earth, phenomenal speed
Dragonmage, Xao Jin of Earth, manipulation of magical energies using dragon forms

Night Girl and Dragonmage had gone one way while the Flash led Karate kid along the other.

Dragonmage had summoned a particularly spikey and nasty looking dragon-form that he currently rode the back of.

Night Girl had laughed as she led the way, her shadow enhanced strength gave her the edge in the few encounters they had. The Tyrrazian Warmongers may have had a fierce reputation for their fighting prowess but this Legionnaire was dispatching them with casual ease. Xao was quite happy to follow in Lydda’s wake. As a former Academy Student he still had that mixture of respect and fear for her, despite, technically, them both being on a similar level within the organisation.

While Night Girl and Dragonmage flew along the tunnel towards their next fight in the opposite direction the Flash made easy work of their opposition.

While Terri Sam’aa ran circles, quite literally, around the Tyrazzian warmongers Karate Kid studied the huge hulking machine that sat before her. It was clearly a drilling device of some sort that sucked up the raw material it burrowed through and blew out whatever it couldn’t use or process in its internal factory compartments behind it. As it dug it produced a supply of conduit and wiring that strung along the cave wall behind it. The young Lythyllian martial artist had quickly realised that she was no match for the Flash in these confined spaces so allowed her speedier colleague the pleasure of cuffing their opponents. While the Flash had her fun Karate Kid decided to make herself useful in another way. She tried scanning the drilling machine but other than rudimentary systems she could not understand much of the technical data her flight ring showed her. The drilling machine fascinated her as she had been raised in a monastery on Steeple for half of her life where the nearest thing they had to hi-tech was one holo-viewer and a shuttle craft. Not even every building on the estate had in-door plumbing. Mithindrivithis knew that when she returned to Legion World she would need to seek out some basic tutorials on the wondrous technology the United Planets had to offer so she could be of more use to the team in future.

She had incapacitated the drilling quickly with a few choice blows and awked the Flash if she was ready to move onto the next one.

The speedster was at Karate Kids side before she had finished asking. “Already been there Kid. And the next one as well.” The two women shared a grin.
