Let's try a more traditional game, shall we? Same basic concept of Wheel of Fortune and Hangman but without the fabulous prizes of the former or the grisly consequences of the latter!

Players may guess 1 letter per round. A round is comprised of periods between puzzle updates by whomever created it showing letters filled in and running a list of incorrect guessed letters. Anyone who has successfully guessed a letter may try to solve the puzzle when their letter is confirmed if they think they know it. Newcomers or incorrect guessers must wait 'til the next round when they have guessed a correct letter if they want to solve. Incorrect puzzle solvers will not be punished but can't guess again until they have another letter guess confirmed. Puzzle solver gets to create the next puzzle. He or she must list a category as a clue. The category can be as general or specific as the creator wishes.

In the event that 2 participants guess the same letter or the same solution in a round, the first of them to post gets the credit.

In some ways this sounds complicated, so there may be some growing pains, but I will try to make the rules clear throughout the process.

As game originator, I get the first puzzle!

The first category is one of my favorites from WoF in which two different things are combined to form a new thing as the end of one coincides with the beginning of another. An example would be "BACK TO THE FUTURE IMPERFECT". See what I mean?

Kappa, EDE, Ibby and Blacula are all eligible to attempt to solve the puzzle now if they think they know it. (Good luck with that! tongue ) No newcomers may solve but are welcome to guess a letter to be eligible to solve next round!

An aside: Shortly after my mom passed away my father started watching Wheel of Fortune with me. After the wheel was spun, I would say "I'd like an S" and immediately the contestant would say "Pat, I'd like an S." After a few letters were up, I'd say "She's going to buy a vowel. An E." and the contestant would say "Pat, I'd like to buy an E." Dad was amazed and wondered how I knew what they were going to say. After a while he caught on that these were the most common letters and everyone goes to them. Dad liked it when all three contestants won some money.

Ack! This is frustrating! I'm confident I know all of the words except for one that is totally stumping me. :-/

R

P.S. Rule question: If someone guesses a letter in the first round (for example), but then doesn't guess a letter in the second round (for example), are they still eligible to guess the answer at any point after the first round?

Nope, you've gotta have a correct letter guess in the round that leads up to the latest reveal.

Now that I'm reading it again, I think I know the answer! But I already guessed a letter... so I'd better wait until the next round...

Thanks for the clarification. I better not miss a round!

That could get to be a problem if rounds end up varying in length.

Yeah, it could be. If someone solves and gets to do the next puzzle, they should commit to look in at least once or twice a day so that: a) we aren't left hanging (natch! wink ), and b) we don't have so many letter guesses that the puzzle is practically solved in the next round because so many have been filled in.

It's a work in progress, so I'll welcome kibitzing on the rules and process. I'm wondering if maybe we should have a special vowel rule for example to mimic WoF's "buy a vowel" thing. Like maybe one vowel guess per round? hmmm

I'd like to solve it please, Pal.

Whoops. I just deleted my guess at the answer because I notice Pal has excluded me from guessing this round.

I assume that's a mistake though because I did guess a letter in the first round?

P.S. I like the idea of limiting the vowels. It's a bit too easy with them in IMO.

Blacula, you were excluded because you guessed an incorrect letter, "R", before the latest reveal. If it was unclear, only posters correctly guessing letters leading to the next reveal are eligible to solve. Sorry, buddy. frown

Ack. My bad. I reread the first post and the rule is clearly stated there.

I shouldn't have tried to be tricky with a letter that I knew had a low percentage of being correct. I knew the last 5 words of the answer after the first round but got muddled up by thinking the 2nd word was something else. Slapping myself now that I see how obvious it is. Haha

I was thinking of it the other way where if the puzzler updates several times a day but certain guessers are only on once a day, they could end up becoming ineligible because they miss rounds. So you need enough time to allow everyone a chance to guess, but not too long that the number of letters filled in defeats the purpose of the game.

I wonder if maybe I should handle vowels like so:

1st round: No vowels

2nd round and onward: Participant who guesses the consonant that appears the most times in the subsequent reveal, may guess a vowel in the next round if he/she chooses. If there's a tie in this regard, no one gets to guess a vowel next round.

What do you guys think?

I see what you mean. But it's hard to ensure that everyone gets a guess in in any case. I updated this morning and after I got home from work, and it seemed pretty much everyone who'd participated to that point (plus Quis) got their play in. shrug
