I always loved the Hornblower's Secret Asteroid Base, when Hornblower and Hornblower Lass were involved in all those secret missions! "Bump In The Night" "Queen for a Day" "The Legacy of Horn-E" "Dark Days Between Us" "Hornblower Lass's Big Day!" "Loose Lips Sink Ships" "The Great Darkness Cometh" "Greased Palms of Crime Alley" "Lonely Knights of Asteroid X" "The Boy Who Wanted To Be Hornblower"

Well, having the Sinister String Quartet break into the Bandstand and destroy the Blowmobile and the Blowcopter was part of that back-to-basics thing. Trends come and go, it'll be back once they use it in "Hornblower: The Animated Series."

I really liked Hornblower Lass's cool retro-punk outfit of the 1980's! Fishnet stocking with holes in them and leather jackets looked so hot on her!

Heh.
The Hornblower was one of Mal Duncan's more, ummm... UNFORTUNATE identities. And absolutely the WORST costume in all of comicdom from 1939 to the present day. Thankfully, he only wore it for about 4 seconds.
I kinda preferred Mal as the regular guy with no powers and no gimmicks who was just tough enough to hang with the Teen Titans.
But of the multiple IDs he adopted, I liked him as The Gaurdian the most.

Put me down as a fan of Mal as the Guardian also. Didn't care for him as the Hornblower ID with Gabriel's Horn (talk about a lame idea and even lamer name & costume!)

He had a pretty good Rouges Gallery too. The Tuba, Mute-Master and Professer Sousaphone - the reverse Hornblower. And his unlikely ally, the Flute Player immortalized in the disco chestnut "Turn the Beat Around."

Oh wow... it's SO wonderful to reread the hilarity of this thread -- from my early years on LW~
Alas Hornblower was one of those names that I always thought "really? did no one think this was a bad idea?"
Now of course it's provided us pages of delight ... so maybe there is a point to all these characters!

Hornblower has had a resurgence in recent years, partially due to popularity in slash fiction, cos players, and the interest from other markets in quintessential American comics.
I've even heard they've begun casting for the first Hornblower series for Netflix

He had a pretty good Rouges Gallery too. The Tuba, Mute-Master and Professer Sousaphone - the reverse Hornblower. And his unlikely ally, the Flute Player immortalized in the disco chestnut "Turn the Beat Around." You just KNOW that Mr. 'B' Natural was involved in the Hornblower-verse somehow. I bet a time-tossed Buzz finds a vault with Mal's old costume or something, and ends up in the 31st Century hanging out with the Subs, and they persuade him to take on the name Flug L. Horn because it just sounds so much more fine and mellow and futuristic, Maaaaann (or Womannnnn). In all seriousness, I'm not sure the name Hornblower is much more awkward than poor James McNeil Hudson being stuck as "Vindicator" for years. Of course, like a year after he finally got to ditch the name in favor of Guardian, he was toast. I mean, almost literally. I hope somebody warned Mal. Why they didn't just go ahead and give him the code name "Gabriel" if they wanted some quasi-Biblical association is a mystery to me.

They probably thought Gabriel was too much like a "real name" and Hornblower just seemed cool. Especially when snapping fingers.
Clearly Hornblower indicates the need for diversity amongst a person's friends. I see all these groups of straight guys picking out codenames like "Iron Fist", "Joto" and "Hornblower" with no sense of irony or humor. Sigh.
Now, rather than work with Mal as a character, he has his powers removed and just wants to make music. At least he married well

Y'know Mal can still thank his lucky stars that he wasn't at Marvel. First because of that whole dead Guardian thing, and second because he was spared a sparring against Doctor Sax and Johnny Guitar. (When Dazzler saw she was hired to work with them, she begged to just get killed off, but no dice.)

Oh that summer when McFarlane turned Hornblower into a grim and gritty character. I still can't reread the issues where he tracks down intergalactic animatronic slave traders on the mean streets of Happy Harbor.
