We've got a thread that's all about venting. I know, I've posted there myself. But in honor of a dearly departed friend, Lash, I want the Crow thread.
Post here about the good things going on in your life.
Me, i turned in my resignation today. For over two years I did Over the Road driving for a company. I was gone most of the time, but it was needed. I was digging my family out of a hole I put us in. But, it wasn't fun being away from my wife and son. As the sole remaining male adult in the family, I was always worried that something would happen when I was three days away from home and no way to help.
But, I have been looking and found a local company that I think might be the key to what I need. A little less money, but home every night with my eleven year old son and my wife, my mother and special needs sister. Some things are more important that money.
So, that's the (hopefully) good think happening in my life.
Now, what about you....?!
*I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea, this isn't about bragging. We spend a lot of time talking about the problems, the vexings.... share some good things.

This is a really good initiative Rick!
and i’m happy you found a job that better suits your family!
As for me, it’s meeting Quis and jfposey in Boston... and more than that, it just hit me the other day that i’m finally in an environment where I can be totally me, and everyone is so supportive. Life is so much better here. My classmates and the school staff have been the best - just like my LW family

As for me, lots to crow about. In August, I was promoted to the position of Senior Foundations Faculty at my university. In addition to teaching classes, I serve as proxy for my chair, build relationships with our team members, run reports, and do other projects. One of those projects involves redesigning our English Composition I course, which will also have input from the other English faculty members. Essentially, I'm leading this project. My book The Power Club is also coming out in a new edition from Rogue Phoenix Press. The official launch date is October 25, but it's already available on Amazon. Other than that, same old same old.

Started the new job this week and already I've done more backing up in three days than I did in two weeks at my last place. But the great news is that I've also gotten to spend more time with Sam and Carol. And that was the reason for the change.
So yeah, I got that going for me..

Bah! The Hew-Review won't load for me. I smell conspiracy!!
Anyway, I'm psyched to have just updated my art site again. (Just click on my sig line if you're interested.) And I had a pretty good workout on the rowing machine on the gym yesterday. (Though a bit gingerly because I don't want my back to revolt.) Our gym is really nice, and super-close to home so even in bad weather it's a cinch to get to.
Hey, Kids! My "Cranky and Kitschy" collage art is now viewable on DeviantArt! Drop by and tell me that I sent you. *updated often!*

I saw my bestie last week for a nice little "Unbirthday" celebration. Her actual birthday was yesterday. And I finally got to meet her new cat, which she named Elle after a character from one of those TV shows (hang on a minute, I think it's a Netflix original show, so technically not a TV show) that I keep meaning to watch because it sounds interesting but never get around to it. Anyhow, Elle turned out to be adorable and friendly, and my bestie and her partner are doing just fine.

My son just turned twelve in November. From Dec 17th, 2016 to Dec 17th, 2017 he has grown 3 and 3/4 inches. The 3/4 was in the last two months. The kid wears a size 12 men's shoe and is constantly raiding my shirt closet.
He's 12!
And he just got his purple belt in Wado Ryu.
Proud papa crow'in here.

Not the most exciting stuff in the world, but I'm moving into my first solo apartment on the 17th and starting my first full time job on the 22nd.

Thanks, rick and IB! Full-time job, Kappa? Are you still in school? I graduated in December. I'm working in the same city I went to school in, so it's not too bad of a transition.

Some people have asked for more details on my vacation, so here goes.
My flight there went from Boston to DC to Abu Dhabi to Perth. My flights got off to a little bumpy start as the flight to DC was delayed by 3 hours due to the cold. Luckily I had a 7 hour stop over in DC so it didn't cause any problems. I flew with Etihad airlines which is based in the United Arab Emirates. Each flight (except the ones in the US which were through Jetblue) had announcements in English and Arabic. And the flights started off with a prayer for safe travels from the Koran. The flight from DC to Abu Dhabi was about 12 hours and the flight from Abu Dhabi to Pert was about 9 hours. I only dozed a bit. When I got to my hotel in Perth, I took a nap. then got up, got some supper and then back to bed. I think because of this I did not have any jet lag. Every day was hot and sunny. Although one afternoon became overcast and one evening had an intense 60 minute storm.
Near my hotel there were two street malls. Murray Street & Hay Street. They ran parallel and had connecting malls in between. Perth also has 4 free bus lines for the central downtown area of Perth. My first full day, I walked down to Elizabeth Quay. I booked a ferry out to Rottnest island for Friday. There was also a place that did a segway tour of the waterfront. It was my first time on a segway. Because you have to lean forward to make it go, you still use muscles just like if you were walking. The tour was along the waterfront and in David Carr park. It was nice and I was the only person on this particular tour so we went at my pace. I did see some black swans on this tour.
After the segway tour, I went into the Bell Tower. The bell Tower features the bells that were originally from St Martin-in-the-fields Church in London. They were given to Western Australia in 1988 in exchange for copper to make new bells.. They have a little lecture about the bells and then you are allowed to actually ring the bells, which I did. Well, each of us in the group got to ring a bell, not all of them. That was it for the first day.
The next day, I took the train down to Freemantle. Pert is actually somewhat inland on the Swan river. Freemantle is the actual port. Freemantle is an artist town with shops and galleries. I went to Freemantle prison. This is a World Heritage site. Actually part of a World Heritage site. 11 prisons in Australia make up this site. These are the prisons that housed the convict labor shipped to Australia in the 1800s. I took the basic tour. The guide claimed to have been an actual prison guard at the prison. It was still being used as a prison up until 1991. The guide was good, playing up as a prison guard, making us stand on a line and "yelling" at us if we didn't do it right or were not quick enough. It was very interesting. There were 2 other tours, but I was hot and tired from the walking I have already done. The 2nd tour was of escapes from the prison and the 3rd was of the tunnels under the prison.
Friday was my trip to Rottnest Island. I got on the ferry in Perth. It is a 60 minute trip to Freemantle, then another 30 minutes to the island. Now at the mouth of the Swan river there used to be a limestone barrier, but that was removed and the salt water of the ocean came up the river as did some dolphins. At the start of the trip, I did see a dolphin in the river. The trip to Freemantle was ok. A crew member was making comments about the stuff on the river. There was also a TV showing a cricket match. Once we got past Freemantle and out on to the ocean it was amazing. I've been out on the ocean in Boston and the water looks dark. Here it looked blue. Really blue. It was beautiful.
On Rottnest Island there are no cars. There is a bus service and a tour bus that the ferry runs. I was scheduled to take the tour bus in the afternoon. Rottnest is Dutch for rats nest. This is because of the quokkas there. There are small marcupials, but look like giant rats. There are about 10,000 of them on the island. They will come right up to you. The island was where the aboriginals thought the spirits of their dead would go. The Europeans first used Rottnest as a prison for Aboriginals. It later became a tourist spot. The ferry lands at Thompson bay which is one of 2 developed areas on the island. During WWII there was a military base on the island and a railroad track connected it to Thompson Bay. There is also a small airport for the island. After looking arounf Thompson Bay for a bit, I headed to a beach area known as the Basin. There I waded into the Indian Ocean. The beach was sandy, but at the water line, the sand was all gone and it was a rocky floor. The water was warm.
Heading back to Thompson Bay, I encountered my first quokka. Some of them have patchy fur, which I was told was the result of them eating human food. On the way back, I stopped at a small cottage that had been used by a prisoner after his release. In the cottage there was a volunteer guide. They were scattered throughout the island.. I talked to him for a while and told him I was from Boston. Then I had some lunch and went to the island museum. While I was looking around the volunteer there changed shifts. I talked to the new one and she said "oh are you the gentleman from Boston? The other guide was telling me about you."
As I mentioned, there was a bus tour of the island. Other than the buses, there are no vehicles on the island. You can rent a bicycle or walk. The bus tour was great. It was 90 minutes and took us to the undeveloped parts of the island. We did have a stop at the lighthouse, but did not have time to go up the lighthouse. On the western-most part of the island there is a boardwalk. It is also extremely windy on this part. In the sand dunes along the boardwalk, there were burrow holes made by the Southern Blind Snake. Now the sky was becoming overcast and the wind was picking up. We passed by 2 of the 4 salt water lakes on the island and saw more quokkas. The toour ended just in time for the return ferry. With the wind very strong, they said that the sea was going to be rough. We were told not to leave our seats and they passed oout barf bags just in case. It was rough. Swells kept slamming into the boat and were were going up and down on the swells. I started singing the Gilligan's Island theme to myself. Things calmed down once we got to Freemantle and into the Swan river. If I could do it again, I would have stayed over night on Rottnest and spent 2 days there.
The next day, was my last day in Perth. I checked out of my hotel, but checked my bags with them. I wandered around for a bit, collected my bags, and headed to the airport for my overnight flight to Sydney.
NEXT: Sydney

Sydney:
So on January 6th I took a night flight from Perth to Sydney with a layover in Melbourne (not enough time and not the right to to see any of Melbourne) I arrived in Sydney at about 8-9 in the morning. I was able to take the public trains from the airport to fairly close to my hotel - the Grand Hotel. However, check in wasn't until 2 pm. They did store my luggage for me and I went exploring a bit. My hotel was on Hunter street and according to the map the New South Wales State library was just up the street. And by up, I mean up. Up a very steep hill. On the way up, I passed an office building that had a column that was diagonal and was a message board. That was kind of cool. I did pop in the library and was able to use their internet to make a quick post on Facebook. I also explored the Royal Botanical Garden, which was right next to it. There I saw ibises which surprised me. I also got a bite to eat and then headed back to check in. As I was hot and tired, I was ready for my room.
The first thing about the Grand Hotel was that you checked in at the bar on the ground floor. When I checked in, I was told that you needed to open the elevator doors yourself and you needed to make sure the outer and inner doors were closed in order for the elevator to go. Going up to my room on the 5th floor, the first thing I noticed was that in the hallway there were two rooms marked "Toilet" and two rooms marked "Shower". Going into my room, I noticed that there was no air conditioning, but a fan over the door. I immediately turned it on and opened the window. There was a sink in the room, but it only had cold water. Checking out the toilets, they just had a toilet, not sink to wash your hands. Also my room was in the back and each night at around 10, I could hear someone dumping a bunch of glass bottles into the trash. Seeing as the room was already pre-paid, I decided to treat it as an adventure.
The next day, I went back to the library for another check in on Facebook. I then went to the Museum of Sydney. It was real nice and had an exhibit of mugshots from the 1920s. These mugshots were full length picture with the men and women wearing street clothes. The men had hats on and some of the women had pearl necklaces. I also visited the Hyde Park Barracks with is part of the World Heritage site of Australian convict prisons. It was also used as an immigration station and an asylum for women. It was right next to Hyde Park (hence the name) The park was nice and there was a festival going on in it. There was a two level carousel. I looked through it but did not feel like standing in line for anything. I also stopped back at the library. Like Boston's main library, there are 2 buildings - a new one and an old one. The new one pretty much has the stuff that you use on a daily basis, while the one building is more for exhibits. The reading room in the old building was so nice. Open and airy and full of light.
The next day was the day of my wildlife tour. The tour is for 10 people and I was picked up at 12:30 from a hotel around the corner from the Grand Hotel. We drove 90 minutes from Sydney to Berrima. There we did a river walk. This river is known to have platypuses (platypi?). The walk along the river was pretty steep in place and I am not in the best of shape. We didn't see any platypus, but they are a nocturnal animal and we would go back. From there we went to a local cafe for coffee/tes/soda and a piece of cake. Now whe I was growing up my mother would make a white sheet cake, cut it up into squares, cover the squares with chocolate syrup and roll them in coconut. These were the cakes that we were given in the cafe. I also found them offered as snack cakes in convenience stores. They are call Lamingtons. The cute young guy who served us was named Dylan and in talking to him, he said how he liked Pres. Trump. I later thought if he would like Pres. Trump as Prime Minister of Australia. Still he was quite cute.
From the cafe we went to Belanglo State Forest. On the way there we spotted 2 emus by the highway. In our little group there was a family (grown children though) and the daughter was very good at spotting wildlife. After the emus we drove into the forest. Our driver/guide did say that sometimes the tours were not able to find any koalas. We immediately came across some kangaroos. We got out and were standing there looking at them and they stood there looking at us until they got bored and moved away. One did have a joey in her pouch. Seeing kangaroos in the wild made my trip complete. We then drove on and the woman spotted a koala in a tree. It was just resting there. We were all out a nd snapping pictures. It moved up a little but otherwise was quite still. We continued on. there were just dirt roads in the forest and the ride was quite bumpy. The driver let some of the group out for a 30 minute walk and drove the rest of us further ahead for a 10 minute walk. He then walked ahead and came back when he spotted another koala. This one was further into the woods and harder to see. We also saw some wombat holes and 2 different types of ant mounds. Heading back out of the forest, we saw one more emu and some deer. We went back to Berrma for dinner at the local pub. (this and the snack were included in the price of the tour) The driver took everyone but me and another woman back to the river in hopes of seeing a platypus. She (Reese from Toronto) and I did not feel like walking that river trail again. And just as well as they came back without spotting a platypus.
After dinner, some of the group walked along another part of the river while the driver took the rest of us to another area. There I saw many more kangaroos and a couple of wallabees. We regrouped and drove a bit looking for wombats. We did find one, but it was getting dark and it was a bit in from the road, so all I saw was a black shape. We then drove back to Sydney and it was about 10 pm.
I will finish up my trip in another post.

I slept for most of the night last night. Normally, I wake up three or four times due to bad shoulders, bathroom trips, or odd noises. I'd say I got at least five hours of uninterrupted sleep. WOOOHOOOOOO!

Pulled off an April Fools Day prank.
The prank was played on my two nieces and nephew. We told them all the eggs were hidden outside without hiding any. They were out there for 5 minutes looking for eggs before we told them.

It’s good to appreciate these things, they may seem little but can be quite significant. Congratulations all

When you're older and they pretend to hide your medication in the freezing cold yard for five minutes, you'll be able to appreciate the fun of it.

My son threatened me with that whole retirement village thing. I laughed and told him I'd be long dead before that ever happened.

Finished my last class today. Assuming I passed all my classes, then I'm done. I also passed my language certification exams in French (low intermediate) and Spanish (high basic).
I am still taking optional classes (5 weeks of!), which will earn me a certificate course in Digital Transformation.

Played a round of golf with the boy today and then came home and napped. I know energy levels drop at 50, but damn. Still, time with Sam is always a great thing, and it's not like he has to spend time with his old man, he does it because he likes to. That's a good thing.

A few days ago, I discovered the world outside...outside of my own head.
Seriously, for someone who's been carrying around PTSD and Emotional Disconnect for decades (no exaggeration, I was inaccurately diagnosed by one inept doctor after another until around 2015) this is a huge step forward for me, to finally realize that, as bad as Real Life is in a lot of ways, it's also got its good sides, and it's not a 24 hours/7 days a week horror movie!
It might seem obvious to a lot of people, but, trust me, many trauma survivors such as myself dig deep, deep, deep inside their own minds just to get away from their negative misperceptions of the world.
Until they realize the demons within them are just as bad as the ones without, and the urge to escape is reduced to almost nothing.
I know very well how lucky I am. A lot of people don't even get close to the point I have. Just look at the rising rate of suicides around the world.
Please tell at least one friend or loved one today how much they mean to you. It makes all the difference.
Now I think I'll go take a leisurely stroll.
Still "Fickles" to my friends.

So the other day the AC at work was not working and I left at noon (still got paid for the whole day) Walking home from the subway, I found $20 on the sidewalk of my street. I did eventually give it to a homeless person.

Okay, wierd period in my life. I've always worked, or been looking for work, but I'm pretty steady. Had more than one job on multiple occasions. But in the last six months I've had three seperate full time jobs. That, for me, is unusual. I believe that if you take a job, you stick with it for at least a year. But, things changed with the first company. I took that job because I would be home and off the road. Took a hit in pay to do it. But then it got even more spotty because North Carolina ran out of money for bridge work, and that was what we mostly hauled. So runs got really spotty. Then Carol's job moved to tennessee without her, natch. That meant I had to step up in earning. So I took a job with someone I had known before. Kinda family, but we had a history. Still, I figured as much as he liked money, he'd take me along with the company to make it. Wrong. I was doing nearly 3,000 miles a week sometimes and taking home not much more than with the previous company. Even worse, I was expected to handle logistics, planning, customers, and a lot more. All on a very poor pay plan. Drivers don't deal with clients and brokers unless they are independents. Too much time was being lost on that, and too much time was being lost due to their lack of attention to detail, which was costing me time and money.
So, I pulled the trigger on that job in only four months. The guy running it was counting on my admittedly overdeveloped sense of loyalty. But, promises to me were not met.
So, I went back to bulk over the road. The stress is gone, my wife and mother and son say I seem like my old self again. Now, everyone knows I'm Cranky, but believe me, that's nothing compared to the grump I had become.
Right now, the money isn't much better, but that's because of the current health crisis, not the company. They have lived up to everything they said, I'm tired and old but mostly stress free now other than just daily stuff that I can fuss about to myself and get it out before getting home. Carol has an interview next week, and things are looking better than they have for a while.
I'm grateful.

Glad things are better for you, Rick. I've been in situations before where I became grumpier than normal due to stress, and people around me could feel it. So I totally relate. It's amazing how much unconscious impact stress has - and being like your old self is a great gift. Looks like your home life is much better, and the company you're with is promising.
Best of luck with Carol's interview, will keep my fingers crossed!

That's been a real tough several months for you Rick and I'm glad that there's ? gah? don't want to type "light at the end of the tunnel" to remind Rick of work... ... but you know what I mean. I've been in jobs that have asked far more than originally expected, and I know I'm saner being out of them. It's also very tough leaving a position if you value loyalty. But that works both ways. Really glad to hear you're feeling better about things. All the best for Carol's interview next week. thoth activates his lawn-based minefield, listens to the cries of the young and raises a glass to Rick...

I'm officially a comic book supervillain Intriguing. Care to elaborate? I helped out a Kickstarter for a comic about a super villain bar, and one of the perks is being included in the series as a reoccurring character. I came up with a design and used Sketch Lad's artwork of my avatar for reference and that's how Caffeine Kid was born

Okay...I don't want to jinx myself by crowing prematurely, but...
...I finally succeeded in completing a non-fan-fiction 1-issue comic-book script with a beginning, middle, and end. *And* I've done breakdowns of all 28 pages, also something I had never managed to do in the past.
The Gods be willing, by Christmastime 2020 I will have realized my dream of self-publishing at least one comic book in my lifetime.

Thank you, Rick. Now I've just gotta sketch out the front and back covers and the inside cover pin-ups...and then the seriously intense drawing begins.

I'm now up to 36 of the contiguous 48. Oregon is beautiful, once you get past The Dalles on I84. Spectacular scenery between Illinois and Portland on I80 and I84, but I like my food brown, not my land and vegies.

I won't lie, it was STUNNING! Sheer drops, horizons dozens of miles away instead of the next woodline like in South Carolina. Shit, I was noticing Mt. Hood nearly fifty miles away, well before I knew what it was. And the Columia river in Oregon/Washington...phenominal. But only a small percentage of it was green. I was missing my trees and swamps in places like west Illinois, Nebraska, Whyoming, Utah, Idaho and Eastern Oregon. I can appreciate the beauty, but it's not my kind of beautiful. Love my swamps.

I learned a chord on the guitar. Yeah, I know, been a couple of years, but my fingers are old and don't move so well. Just been trying to move simply between strings. So far, I can pluck a few sounds that don't sound like complete and total garbage. And I'm good with that. 53 years and a lot of damaging miles behind me, I'll take a little, it'll last me a long way. My biggest problem is that my fingers are so big, even straight on I touch the other strings next to the ones I'm supposed to be using, which messes up the tone. still, I'll keep plugging on.

mr_cleome and I got the kitchen floor (which was embarrassingly grody from a month-plus of neglect) re-sealed/coated, after I swept and scrubbed it down really well. We each did half and then met in the middle, so to speak.
Then I bought us swanky take-out salad, sandwiches, and mini-cheesecakes so we could have a nice dinner while we waited for it to dry/set. (He picked the food up so I could rest my aching dogs.)
It's not "showroom perfect" after about two years of use, of course. But it's close.

[bows] Well, it was just a sealing job, not an entire new floor thankfully. But yeah. So nice to see first thing in the morning.

I put an Ibanez AS73 on layaway. I'm having to pay in installments, but it's a jim dandy little semi-hollow body electric. I got to try it out today. Plucked a few sounds, kinda embarrasing that I'm still so bad. Sam, my son, sat down and immediately coaxed several little riffs out of it that sounded like a fusion of punk jazz psychedelic rock out of it in about 3 seconds flat. Yeah, see if he gets to play with it after it's paid for.

Thanks, Thoth. Yup, that's it. Olive green. There was an electric blue one that I wanted that was only $350, the as53. The color was like an electric neon blue. This is the olive mint green. But, the sound is the thing. And it sounds excellent. Can't wait to get it paid for and get it home.

And she's home with me now. dream sounds from it. Well, when my son plays it. I'm still so bad, but I'm learning. Heck, I can even manage one smooth move from one string to the next. Just one. Then my fingers tangle. But, I'm learning. Set my sights on House of the Rising Sun. That one I think I can learn.

A few things happening with my life now...
a) a good friend is moving to Amsterdam, so I'll help her a bit with settling in
b) I am taking next steps to buying the apartment that I currently live in
c) I'm settling into my new job, already have a few projects lined up = assigned to me!
d) boyfie is getting vaccinated soon as well! I'm next. he's younger but has some pre existing med conditions (or so the letter says, but we're not aware of any!)

Indeed I feel so grown up! Though it helps that neither of us want kids - nothing against them, we just don't feel they are right for us and don't want the responsibility. that should help us not grow up too fast lol

Working on starting my own trucking business with my wife. She'll be my partner as her logistics skills are perfectly suited. We've taken a lot of steps already, but are going slowly, making sure we get it right.
First time I've been excited for something in a looooong time. That's excellent, Rick! Best of luck to you two!

Really chuffed for you Rick! Also that you're approaching it in the right way.
And also a congrats to HWW too! "Nine steps in Gagne's model? I think you'll find that there are 40. Some would even call them a top 40..."

Ibby! That's so cool! Super congrats on both, as I know you've been working on that for a long many weeks now!
And that's really cool Sarky, I really liked your blog page today. I'm going to test the waters and try to go to the Baltimore comic con next week for a day. Its the first time in ages that I've been to one.

Very prudent to have it in your own name... just in case. Oh, I wonder if HWW meant millstones, and not Milestones. Our nationality just led to endless Brexit discussions.

I just discovered a charming little Colombian eatery only 5 minutes from where I live. The food is very good, and they even go the extra mile in the way they package takeout -- everything is arranged so that there's no danger of spillage.

Great news...My son just got accepted to the South Carolina Governor's school in the natural resources house. It's very prestigious and he did it all on his own. He put together all the requirements and pursued it until he got it. I couldn't be more proud of him
Sucks to be me news... My 16 year old only child just got accepted to a school two hours away and will only be home 1 weekend a month. Bittersweet for me but I support him wholeheartedly.
Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!

Congratulations to your son Rick. That's great that he's shown that commitment and interest in something at that age. I only hope he doesn't mind sharing his room once a month, with the lodger you rent his room out to.

Congratulations Rick. Good on you being the proud Dad. Yeah it's hard when they move out, especially at 16. I know you will miss him and miss seeing some of his continued growth. Good luck with the transition.

So check it out! I have something to crow about!
My eldest was a senior of the class of 2020. Needless to say, her High School graduation was pretty much ruined. She applied to several schools in state and was accepted at a couple medium schools, but not the big one (U MD) because they make the in-state bar so high in order to get more out of state students for the $$$$. She ware a really good HS student, but a lot of schools are asking for 4.0+ weighted GPAs nowadays, so its a crappy application environment for a freshman.
Anyway, the school that she declared for didn't have its shit together in the summer of 2020, so she opted to go to the local community college and knock out the pre-reqs, which she did amazingly all four semesters - she was on Dean's List each time.
Tonight we just found out she was accepted at U MD as a transfer! AND she's going to have a graduation ceremony with an Associates degree this May. We are all so proud of her!
Perseverance, my friends.
