...started the third thread in this series.
... am going to a bar mitzvah
...is chilling at home with the kids again.
...spent a relaxing day on Georges Island in Boston Harbor. The weather was perfect; sunny, warm, and with a cool ocean breeze. I packed a lunch and brought a book to read. I explored Fort Warren which is on the island. And I enjoyed the ferry rie to and from the island.
... am wishing this friggin' rain would just stop for cryin' out loud!
...had a great time with friends at a graduation party, but sorta wish I had been doing what Quis was doing.
Hopes FK survives the storm that just passed us. It was nasty...even is it was for a really short time, and I was driving durin the worst of it.
...slept all the way to 8:30. But I think it left me more tired than usual, so I may have restarted the REM cycle.
...sweated my arse off in this heat and humidity...why do people like this thing called summer?
started removing about 400 ft. of chain link fence from my folks place.
... worked another 11 hour day, and cut the grass the second I came home (you know, in case in rains again in the next 6 hours!).
...helped sort and shelve ten billion boxes of auto parts while running up and down a rolling ladder about five billion times in eight hours.
It was like being half library page, half weightlifter.
[plotz]
... am starting work a little later so I actually have so "me time" in the morning.
Legion Tracker, get your <strike>creative</strike> filthy mind out of the gutter!
removed yet another section of fence in my folks yard. 96 degree heat. A few more, and it'll get to be comfortable working weather.
...got called a troll on FB by a friend. The reason you ask...he made a statement and claimed it was scriptural, and I refuted it...using scripture to plainly make my case. I asked him to provide just one scripture backing his claim, and he cannot do it. I asked him to show me where I took anything out of context...he could not do it. Instead, he calls me a troll and insults my parenting skills.
I'm having fun with him now. Before he was just a minor bit of entertainment for the long weekend...now, so much more.
Moral of the story...if you want to make big claims about your beliefs and use God as your wingman...you better make sure you can back them up.

Just so you know, I use a Sonicare toothbrush on my mind twice a day...and then mental floss.
Yeah? I see, so all that rattling around and scraping of your brain did this to you.
Hmmmmm ...
It's ALL starting to make good sense now!
...got my computer connection to the internet back. Wednesday during the lightning storm I foolishly had my computer on. With one bolt, my computer blinked out for a second and there was a little crackling sound. After that no internet conection. The same bolt also fried my roommates answering machine.
Thankfully the rest of the computer was working fine and my modem was working. I first called my ISP and they tried to help. They said that it sounds like the network card. So today I took my computer to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. Yup, a new network card did the trick.
Moral: Don't use your computer during an electricl storm.
... only have to work a half day. This is good news as it's going to be another mild and sunny day around here so I can have a nice afternoon with my wife.
..watched part of the 25th anniversary stage production of Les Miserables.
... helped Carol clean our disaster area of a house. We've been so busy the last few weeks that we got seriously behind. Now it looks livable again.
... was a good boy and cut and trimmed my lawn, and picked up some stray garbage that somehow always seems to blow in from who-knows-where, ripped up some weeds, and even planted a couple of easy flowers (I definitely do not have a green thumb). Scoring brownie points with the wife is never a bad thing!
...took the kids to church, did a lot of little things around the house, and watched some television with the kids.
... got an iPad through work
...had to give up my Blackest Night Green Lantern ring to one particularly Green Lantern obsessed little three year old boy to keep him from hijacking his sisters again. Guess I need to get another one.
...managed to make two non-inane (sort of), comics-related posts in a row.
Yes, I'm as shocked as you are.

...found out some hacker tried to use my credit card number to buy shoes in another state. The best part? They went fifty bucks over what my credit line would be IF the stupid card was paid off!
I hope they were nice shoes, Jerkface. Because now I have to go cardless for two weeks while the company issues me a replacement with a new number. Eff you. Seriously.
... am feeling Cleome's pain right now because the same thing happened to my wife's credit card last summer. It was no fun.
... took the day off to go to my bro-law's graduation
... chasing after the cat and running around trying to get ready for work.
...am having a gout flare-up. God, those hurt!!!
... was honoured to be included amoung the friends of none other than the great Paul Levitz on Facebook!
...hung at home with the kids.
...came to the happy end of a year-and-a-half-long project.
...finally posted again in "Lord of the Oval".
... have major running around to do before I even go to work!
...quit my volunteer post after five-plus years.
... called a student's house to set up a meeting... the person who answered had a very youthful sounding voice but responded "yes" when I asked if she was Mrs. 'Whatever'... we spoke for a few minutes and then she told me she'd have to call me back after she spoke to her husband... a few minutes later, the phone rang and the real Mrs. 'Whatever' told me that I had spoken to her daughter, who had mistakenly said "yes" when I had called and then didn't "know how to correct the mistake"... I said I thought the student had an awfully young mother to which she responded, "Well, yes he does"...
... have to work eight hours and then go and babysit for another, possibly eight, hours.
...actually, yesterday, I get an Arsenal and Lightning Lad sketch by Phil Jimenez.
Took the family to see Green Lantern. It was a lot lot lot of fun.
Took the family to this:
http://mlatcomics.com/krc/ Had a lot of fun. got some sun, as it was pretty much all outside (they had tents for the artistts and writers.
A big thankks to Dan Mishkin (co-creator of the Blue Devil) for telling me about it.
... am lamenting the that the color of the water in the pool is still a vivid green
... had to work on Father's Day so will have to visit mine and my wife's another day this week.
Played nine holes of golf with a friend and had a great time. Then took my kid to the splash pad but it was closed due to thunder and bad weather, so we made Ice cream instead.
... got a small promotion at work. I'll take it!!
... saw Phil Jimenez at the NYC pride parade... I successfully resisted the urge to yell out, "I loved the Legion Academy!"

He's okay, thanks for asking. OLD. lol... The vet upped his dosage and we started him on a prescription wet food... he had proteins in his urine samples and this food is designed for better absorption. That and lowering his BP by getting the hyperthyroidism under control should hopefully allow him to gain some weight back.

... had a very entertaining bus ride. The bus I was on was going through a shopping plaza. There are 3 stops within the plaza. As the bus was going by the 3rd stop, an old man pressed the stop button, but the driver kept going. The guy started yelling for the driver to stop. The driver said that the bus had been pass the stop when the old man pressed the stop button and so could not stop or let him off. The old guy went ballistic, yelling and getting into the driver's face. Another passenger got up and got between the two. The driver called the transportation police. I didn't see it, but apparently the old guy hit the driver.
Anyway, we get to the next stop, which was right outside the shopping plaza. The driver opens the door and the guy gets off, but stands in the door yelling for the driver to come out and fight him. The intervening passenger waves the guy to leave. Which he does.
We then had to wait for the police to show up. They interviewed the driver, the intervening passenger and one passenger who was sitting up front. Then they tell us that a replacement bus will be along shortly. It actually wasn't that far from my stop, so I asked if it was ok for me to leave and then I walked home. Although I lost sight of the bus after a while, I still think I got home sooner than if I had waited for the other bus.

Was it, by any chance, Berlin Alexanderplatz?[/b]Heh. No. It is a movie called
Abandon Ship . The story is this...back when I was a lot younger (seriously about 30 or so years ago) we were on vacation at my Grandparents up in Ludington Michigan. We started watching this movie on some television station that they happened to get. We were about halfway through it, and they started making the difficult choices that people have to make in a situation like this (overloaded small boat in the middle of the ocean with no hope of rescue that they know of.) My Grandfather calls and says that his car broke down...so we begrudgingly turn the movie off and go get him (he had been bar hopping and did something stupid to his car.)
We never found out what happened to Tyrone Power and the rest of the survivors...or even everyone they cut loose.
Looked for it for thirty years to no avail (except for Ebay auctions that I wasn't going to cough up that much money for.) Finally...I'm flipping through my On Demand free movies, and there it is. So we finally got to see the ending...thirty years later.

Eventually I reached my breaking point and asked the IT people one question. "If security is a concern (and I understand why it is), why have you people in IT left so many gaping holes in our internet security (Websense)?"
I then told them the dozen or so ways (likely left there for themselves) that it can be bypassed.
Upper management were suddenly not too impressed with IT and what they had to say.
So, now I am competing with the IT dept to write the scheduler.

... fell off the veg-wagon?
... went on a meat bender?
I don't know... long story short, after being completely vegetarian for over five years, I suddenly - for no discernible reason - was seized tonight by an incredible craving for a steak, which I then indulged.
Although I do admit that I feel a bit guilty (I originally went vegetarian to support my wife) I do have to report... my god, it was so good!!!
Yeah, I told her before the fact. It's not the first time I've had the urge to eat meat, but it was the first time I went through on it since I gave it up.
Her attitude has always been, "You're a big boy; it's your choice," which, to be honest, is really the only way we are together with most things. We tend not to make heavy demands on one another.
She had been through a traumatic experience a while back with animal cruelty and it changed her outlook toward animals forever. I didn't - and don't - really have the same overarching objections toward meat as she (though I do agree with several of her main points), but at the time wanted to show her as much support as I could.
This is not to say I'm back to being a full fledged "meat-eater" by any stretch - and certainly not in her presence - but I do think I have to examine my own beliefs and find the balance that's right for me.
Yeesh - sorry to ramble on. Heavy thoughts in the Nihil house tonight.
It's allowed. I like to consider myself a philosophical vegetarian. I really would put the thing into practice if I didn't love my burgers so dang much.

...got a cast put on my left foot. Was told that I have Charcot Arthropathy. Basically a arthritis thing that people with neuropothy of the feet can get. My left foot arch is basically collapsing.
I have to keep all weight off of it for 6 weeks at least. That should stop the effects and heal it.
Work is going to be fun.
Well, that sucks like hell, Dev. but, six weeks ain't forever. I been there.
Yeah, it's the whole job thing. Gotta see how they react to this. If they can accommodate until I can figure out how to get around this.
Got a few ideas already, but I will still need some help.
Hey, it ain't no big thing. We'll get a lawn chair, a couple of solar panels that can link, a battery, a small electric motor, and we'll McGuyver a damn chair that'll run 0 to 45 in 3.2 seconds, clear stairs, and make love to their mama's.
I was just thinking I need a stool that I could kneel on to keep the weight off my foot...but that would work too.
Yeah, Ricks idea sounds like WAY more fun than a stool

Realized that I didn't have a ladder tall enough to reach it. Went to the hardware store in my Honda, Accord hoping to find a collapsable ladder that would fit in the Honda. Realized I didn't want to pay $255 for a collapsable ladder. Went home and found a tree trimmer guy on Craigslist. Called him up and asked if he could come over with his ladder. Agreed to pay him 25 bucks. Waited two hours for him to show up. Got the battery changed. Still trying to get the dogs settled down.

You see I work in cycles of 6 days of 12 hours then have 6 days off (in a 2 week cycle it works out to around 84 hours, normal work week.
Thanks to my job being unionized, my qualifications and senority I am entitled to what amounts to 12 days off a year + 6 stat holidays.
So when I take 1 cycle off, when you include my regular 6 off to either side, I get 18 days.
And I can do that 3 times a year (this year I can do it 4, as I didn't take all my vacation last year)

Realized the Apocalypse is in three days.
Another long day punctuated this afternoon by a fall on my left knee. Not real happy with the idiot that is using the table with wheels as his own workbench without locking the wheels so that it does not roll when touched. Learned that the hard way...along with the fact that it was him that left his extension cord all over the place which is what caused me to go off balance and reach for said table because I did not want to slam my foot (the one that was in the cast this summer) down onto the ground. Instead I now have a really good size bloody scrape on my knee. Oh happy day.

oh yeah, before leaving town I decided to stop at the school a do a bit of lesson planning and grading. They installed a new electronic key system so all I had to do was swipe it to get in. All the school's lights were on.
After an hour, two security guards showed up and asked me how I got in. I said I walked in. I tried to tell them their system let me in and by the way, the outside door doesn't close and lock. They wouldn't let me. They started accusing me of all kinds of dastardly things, not having permission to come in (need permission to work, lol) and causing overtime charges.
Their system let me in. All the lights in a three story building were on. It took them an hour to find me. There were cars in the parking lot. One of the outside doors doesn't close....

... had one of the worst commutes of my life.
First at my stop, trains heading into Boston can come from Braintree or Ashmont and arrive on different tracks. IN the morning, the Braintree train can be so pack, you can't get on. 2 Braintree trains came and were too packed, but I saw an Ashmont train approaching. So I hurried to the other platform and waited and waited and waited. After about 5 minutes, the train pulls into the station. I get on. It's crowded, but there is room to get on. Then they announce that the train is standing by because of a signal problem in Cambridge. So we wait for another 10 minutes. Now it is 9, when I am supposed to be at work. I called in to let them know what was happening. The train finally goes, but at every stop we stand by for 10-20 minutes. A train ride that normally takes 10 minutes took 45 minutes. And with the initial waiting, I was an hour and 15 minutes late. Grrr!!!!!!
... had a much better though unnecessary commute.
Yesterday I was told that the office would be open but close at noon. This morning I got up. Saw that it wasn't snowing yet. Had breakfast and went into the office. After a bit, with no one else showing up, I call the switchboard/bad weather line. Guess what? The office is closed all day! So, I sign off my computer, pack up my stuff and head home. Again, a nice subway ride. So nice that I was tempted to keep riding for a bit longer.

Naw, the opposite pretty much. We do mini-shutdowns all the time, but every 4 years the entire place shuts down for a complete maintenance overhaul. I'll be coordinating getting everything ready, verifying everything is safe to work on and once the shutdown starts, be the go between the maintenance dept. and my own dept. (operations) and management (ugh). There will be hundreds more workers on site compared to normal
Cool. Cause as the guy that's had to shut down a few things and let people go at times, that's some heavy shit. Weighs on you after a time. Good to hear it has another definition.

Frak yeah. Quite an accomplishment
I had five apples today. not as impressive.
I DID however do a quick sketch of Cobalt Kid and Question Lad in a haunted house ... during a seminar ... that needs to be colored tonight. But I have dinner plans first.
Thanks, guys! *HUGS YOU* I was so happy I went to get ice cream as a reward for myself. Calories be damned!

All things being equal, I am 99.99999% certain that we will have a wonderful touristy time, and I'll be back here in two weeks with exciting tales of adventures from a far off land.
On the other hand... given the state of the world we live in today - on the off-off chance that a couple pasty-faced Americans vacationing in the Middle East should attract any sort of unintended trouble... I'd be remiss in not taking this chance to say, "I think I'll miss you most of all, Legion World".
Anyway, knock on wood and enough of all that... I'll see you all in a bit.

I am the only member of my genetic nuclear family (my mother, father, sister, and brother) who has not had to undergo spinal surgery at some point.
I was talking to my younger brother last night who is recovering from his third back surgery. He's had three discs removed and a metal "fusion cage" placed in there to take their place. He's only 35! That's freaking insane.
I have no idea why I'm the only one this has skipped... (though I do have a pet theory that the fact that I used to parachute may have subtly elongated my spine and prevented the compression they all get)... but trust me, I am freaking thankful.

Pitched a fit at the "Shutdown Manager" right before I left for work this morning...and all my co-workers witnessed it.
20 minute yelling match and I was totally justified and in the right and everyone got to see for real just what a oily, lying snake in the grass the guy is.
and for perspective, current chain of command is as follows -
Me - my supervisor - shutdown coordinator - shutdown manager
Am working my last night shift before I start an 18 day vacation.

Hope you get better soon, Palardy. I have a slight sore throat myself, but so far hasn't hurt quite that bad.

as someone who has been an older student myself, let me tell you: it rawks!
you will do great! and the kids will appreciate you being there - you'll ask the questions they are too scared to ask.
^^Agreed. I was an older student, too. Now, as a professor, I've appreciated having "non-traditional" students in my class. They've usually spent time in "soul-sucking" jobs and know the value of an education.
^^ Older Student too...I was out of school for 15 years before I went back for engineering.

I'm the only guy in a class of women which - at first - seemed a bit awkward, but... screw it, I feel more energized with this form of exercise than anything I've felt in years.
Ha! I'm not quite sure how to interpret that last sentence, Ex. I will just assume it's the exercise that energizes you and not the...um...scenery...
Or maybe I won't assume that...
Well... considering that one of the women is my
wife, you can rest assured that if I found myself focusing on any "scenery" I'd fairly quickly find myself in the "downward dog"-house.

Eleven days, including two full, long weekends! That's, like, an ETERNITY in retail, trust me!

Heading off to sunny Orlando, FL for the bulk of it (Sat-Sat). Luckily, for these old bones, we'll only spend one of those days max in a theme park. The time-share condo we own down there is fairly luxurious!
whew! I am seriously excited for your awesome vacation!
![smile smile](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/smile.gif)
Are you planning to spend most of that time in the condo or on the beach?
Beaches are a pretty good drive from Orlando, so mostly condo and gallivanting!
...found myself highly interested in Lardy's Vacation Blast! that's about to ensue. (I hereby copyright that for future use as a hilarious comedy or a porno movie).
Orlando, FL! Hitting Disney or those types of theme parks? I always get confused on which theme parks are where in Florida and California.

something. As I said to Huey yesterday, thinking about all the grubby little kid ailments that I've probably been breathing in over this past month, "I've really got to stop exposing myself to children."
Yeeeeeeah... I should probably think of a different phrase to express that idea.

...am probably going to be forced to take my family to see Monsters U. I loved the original (it and Finding Nemo are my favorites of the Pixar films) but never wanted a sequel to be made. I'm sure this prequel is decent, but nothing will top the beautiful story of Boo and Sully.
*sigh* Can't help but see that sequels/prequels are the norm, rather than the exception, since Disney engulfed Pixar.
...am probably going to be forced to take my family to see Monsters U. I loved the original (it and Finding Nemo are my favorites of the Pixar films) but never wanted a sequel to be made. I'm sure this prequel is decent, but nothing will top the beautiful story of Boo and Sully.
...saw it. I definitely wasn't wrong. Not bad but a shadow of Inc.
... I always did wonder why companies love making prequels. I hate prequels; you already know where the characters will end up, making it a bit harder to have a sense of suspense or to care so much about their choices. I greatly prefer sequels.
I just think Pixar is at its best creating new things. Again, Monsters U. didn't suck, but no sequel or prequel they've made has come close to being as satisfying as seeing them just surprise us with something we've never seen before. I've a feeling that Pixar's best years are definitely behind them.
There IS such a thing as over-telling. Some sequels suffer from revisiting characters who, frankly, have nothing new to offer because the originals wrapped up their stories quite well.

Chunking Mansion: a city within a city. That was the backpacker place I stayed in Hong Kong, early 90s. An AMAZING social mixture of mostly Indians and Pakistani's and western backpackers. I remember skinny little elevators with a weight limit that they taught us to bypass by holding onto the rails and lifting our feet. You could eat like a God for almost nothing at little restaurants the Indians had hidden in their apartments.
So is most of Asia. Sigh, I miss being on the open road with nothing but a backpack, a map and a sense of adventure... (and of course WIFI access so I can plot my next move).

My gosh you just game me an overwhelming urge for yassa. Or Mafe. Nope, yassa. Mafe tomorrow. Wow, amazed how much I miss particularly remembering how miserable I claimed to be while I was actually living there. There are some things I just cannot get out of my blood, from my time there.
I'd HAVE to add Senegal to MY list, best cooks ever and of course there's the historical connection to the US because of the slave trade. And Ghana. The friendliest people I met when living in Gabon, were from Ghana.
Well, now the day doesn't seem like such a waste. I've actually done something.

Thanks for the compliment but I'm pretty sure the interesting part will be at the destination and you'll be happy it's a short ride to get there, lol.
I am envious. I know Senegal and Ghana are safe, stable and pleasant West Africa destinations, and Gabon has one of the better economies in Africa due to its rich natural resources. But all I know is what I've read, and it will be a while before I actually get to experience these in person.

Gave a belated Happy Birthday to Legion Tracker and vacuumed, cleaned the bathroom and kitchen, organized some household mayhem all for no particular reason. Also paid off all (hopefully) of my Ma's medical bills, found out I own a house, had a snickers bar (king size) and watched Netflix.

...spent a great day hanging out with Ex, Blockade Boy and Suddenly Seymour.
Cool! Was that your first meet-up with Ex and BB? (I know/think you'd already met Seymour.)
Come to think of it, was this BB's first meeting with
any LMBers?
Yeah. Habve met SS before, but not Ex and BB.
Okay...spill on the heights of BB and SS, already! <fingers crossed>
...am having an od day emotionally. Had a great time yesterday, but included in that was information from my wife about a young lady we know from a church we went to.
She is 17 and currently in ICU on a ventilator. Unable to breathe in her own and showing no brain activity at all. She is a very special young lady to us. Jon would only go to her in nursery when he was in there. He adored her, and we call her his first crush/love. She was also a mentor to Hannah through the plays that Hannah did at that church. We are friends with her parents who are some of the nicest people you could ever want to meet.
So...I am having a hard time dealing with some things today at times. They are currently dealing with the Doctors/Insurance saying that there is nothing more that can be done...and are looking for them to decide (as her parents) to pull her from the ventilator.
Don't know how you do that as a parent.
Sorry...just needed to vent a little.
Okay...spill on the heights of BB and SS, already! <fingers crossed>
Sorry man, you're out of luck there. SS is only three inches shorter than me, and BB is taller than Ex.
Sorry to hear about that, Dev. Always horrible to hear about young lives ending too soon.
Okay...spill on the heights of BB and SS, already! <fingers crossed>
Sorry man, you're out of luck there. SS is only three inches shorter than me, and BB is taller than Ex.
Foiled again!
Hm. I might have to make damn sure Ex is taller than me if we meet again....i.e. "demand a recount!"
I was wearing REALLY thick socks.
Sorry of your conflict Dev. Having now met you, I can tell you are the type on which this would weigh heavily. Having recently made a similar decision for my Ma, the needs are fresh. Your friends will find peace as a family. Just be near. Your friends will be ever grateful to know how important the young lady is and will remain to your family and that you are there if needed. Best wishes.
Foiled again!

If it helps, I think you may be the same height, or slightly taller than, Blaze

I'm really sorry to hear that, Dev. She sounds like a very special person. I'm sure her family will appreciate the support and compassion which you are undoubtedly giving them.
...got home from vacation.
Now that things are unpacked and household needs are handled, I've been enjoying reading about the BB/Dev/Ex/SS meetup.
Sorry to hear about Dev's friend though. Praying for that family...and for Dev.
... am extending my thoughts to Dev and his circle of friends. My best to all of you.
And, also...

I might have to make damn sure Ex is taller than me if we meet again.

Cholo throwing up Eastside, bo-y! You caught a break Ex. That waitress was from the northside of the river. We're the Eastside of the river. You're lucky she wasn't strapped.
AND
I'm looking at the Memphis photo in a whole new light.
...am really sad tonight. Lindsey, the young lady I mentioned yesterday passed away this morning. As a parent, my heart breaks for my friends. Tears coming and going today.
Cannot comprehend the pain.
Sorry to hear about that, Dave. And all caused by meds she was prescribed? So senseless.
My condolences, brother. So sorry to hear.
Not sure if it was the meds. She had ben having issues for the last year or so. Will have to wait to find out exactly what the causes were. If the meds had anything to do with it...or if it was something that was going to happen no matter what (i.e. the kid running down the basketball court that falls over dead due to something that was hidden.)
I'm so sorry to hear that, Dev.
Sorry for your loss, Dev.
ah ... hang in there Dev. Sorry to hear that.
... am making plans for meet-ups with not just one, but two of the lovely ladies of Legion World.
Am two hours away from finishing my last shift till August 31st
...felt low on energy all day and wanted to go home...until about 4:30 PM when I perked up and stayed at the office an hour and a half late.

Sure it

Stayed open minded enough to grant "lovely" but I've read Pov's posts. He's NO lady!

...am pondering who those ladies might be since they (females, that is) are in short supply 'round these parts! (Okay, I think I know, upon further thought!)
Watched the evening bird show.
Around 5, the sparrowy looking things show up. They've more color than sparrows so I don't know what they are. There's some let you get pretty close. None jumped on my finger yet but there's one gives it a good thought. It will get within a foot. He likes to hang out in the holes of the chain link fence. Never the top. A lot of the birds like to fly full throttle through the fence. I think birds play games.
Then the woodpecker family shows briefly. Very pretty. The robins but there's the really tiny yellow birds like to chase them. About 5:30 to six though, it's the robin show. Then the cardinal family shows up briefly. No bluejays this year and very few crows. This one robin usually comes back, and makes a racket from the highest perches until just before sunset.
Then the grand finale. Like clockwork, the lightning bugs then at 9:15 give or take, the owls. These owls are like the honey badger. They don't give a shit. You can walk right up to them. Tonight, one was hanging out on the mailbox and I was on the stoop, 2 feet away. Sometimes all three stand on the top bar of the driveway fence, swaying back and forth. They particularly seem to like the little girl from next door.
In the morning, show starts again. The owls are not so regular but sometimes they hangout on top the garage, all three of them. I can see them from the bedroom window. The sunrise is almost always colorful, lights up the dining room red. When lights come up, robins again. The cardinals next, usually just the male making a racket. He flies and lands the same pattern everyday. Then the doves, early to late morning. I like the doves but they're skittish. Mostly I can watch them running around on the roof of the garage, snagging mulberries that have fallen. The bunnies and groundhogs show up about then too. Spring baby's are dumb enough to let you get close but by now, everyone knows to hightail it. Could be the pot I always carry when I see them.
Afternoons are more unpredictable or most likely I haven't figured the pattern. Some delicate looking finchy things and the robins like to hang around the base of the garage. Sometimes the cardinals and jays. In early Spring, the eagle from across the way was seen a lot. Flew not 20 feet from me. Well, 40 feet. My driveway floods when rain is heavy and this Spring I came home, couldn't get into my drive because a Mallard family saw an opportunity to take a swim. I stayed in my car, waited for them to waddle off. On another day, it was a humongous turtle. Had to tell the neighborhood kids it wasn't a drum. Once and only once, three Winters ago, looked out the front window and saw a coyote. Too big to be a fox and never heard of wolves around here. It was a "did I really see that" moment. GORGEOUS animal. Did a quick internet search then went out and checked the tracks. Sure enough. The neighbors say for awhile, there was a raccoon would hang out with the neighborhood one-eyed cat that lived on our porches, depending upon who was feeding. Cat died in March so no more raccoon sitings. A possumey looking thing shows up on occasion. There's an iridescent black/purple tiny bird I see from time to time. Usually after rains. No Idea what that is. Rarely, maybe twice in over ten years I've seen hummingbirds. Wish more of those would be around. Seen a couple redtailed hawks, one landed on the sidewalk while I was on the porch. Stomping on a little bird it had grabbed right out of the air. So far, the canadian geese seem content to just fly over, which is fine by me and none of the hunter birds seem inclined to eat me but there is one bird that likes to poop bomb the house. It's gotta be that crow. How else do you get purple poop on the side of the house? Rocks, will hit the house siding right outside my window, make me jump a mile out of the lazyboy. Someday, I'm going to get that one into the pot.

Also found out a few days ago that a good friend that I used to work with has thyroid cancer. Think they caught it early enough though...

Did something else happen, Dev? Hope you're feeling better now.

I sent her my travel itinerary for this weekend (the places I'd be going, and the real names of the LMBers I'd be meeting up with). A minute or so passed, then I got her reply...
"What are their code names?"Yessssss... it's all coming together. Little by little she's being indoctrinated. One of us... one of us.
Hee! We have code names! We're so awesome.
A martini gets properly stirred in a chinacart.

... SEE!!! :tears: :teethgnashing: :ineedsomecoffee:
... gave Peebz some tea bags (sorry, I drank all my coffee already!)
... walked ... and walked ... and walked ... and had two very milky capuchinos.
I'd kill for a tea bag at this point. a nice earl grey would solve all my problems.
That's what i call a good day.
... woke up early, for once this week.
... am considering a few different options for this coming weekend.
As part of my summer-long travel project, my wife and I are headed to Nova Scotia to visit a certain Legion World cafe owner, but... additionally... also happen to be arriving in the midst of the Atlantic Fringe Festival - a week long showcase of original theatre.
Looking at the schedule, there are
sooooo many good plays that I'd like to check out, but the one show that I know I am
definitely hitting is called, "Love in the Time of Time Machines". Just check out this description:
Klein and Gabrielle broke up. That was it.
OR WAS IT?!
Yes, it was.
OR WAS IT?!
When time's arrow spins like a compass, do our actions amount to a hill of beans? What do the beans amount to? I don't know, you're the bean expert!
Point being...Time Machines!Doesn't that ad copy sounds almost exactly like the type thing that
I'd write?
Wait a minute... maybe I

Or
will!

... had some melon. Oh yeah!

... waited for seven hours for a less than one hour flight.
^ I feel ya, Peebz. I once had to wait four hours for a one-hour flight. We were already on the plane and had to deplane, then we got three more false alarms stating it was alright to board. Worst thing was we'd stayed up all night just for that flight.
...go to work early for the second part of a two-day online conference.
(They've never had me attend a conference until this week.)
...went to the comic book store to pick up the final issue of X-Factor.
(Cleome, that sounds like a positive development. I hope it is.)

Found out that I will be working 60 hours overtime on my days off

...exhibited extreme self-restraint in not immediately posting something I got in a PM today.
Seriously... this thing is so good that it made me grin from ear to ear. I must have looked at it like 10 different times today. I have to hold off one more day... but I'll share it tomorrow night in the "When Legion Worlder Met Legion Worlder" thread.
Trust me... it's worth the wait.

...saw my surgeon today. Minor surgery in my future. No hernia...but I do have a growth that needs to be removed. Fatty tumor about the size of a softball (approx).
Will be the first time I have ever been put under for anything. They found a few other things, but nothing to be worried about.
Oddly enough, he was two hours late getting to the office from the hospital. Which, I admit, was a little annoying...but liveable given what happened. As we are sitting there, this older couple comes in and sits down. She looked familiar to me, but I didn't want to stare. She seemed to be doing the same thought process as well. We were then called into the room. When we emerged, she stood up and walked over. As she said my name, it hit me who she was. Someone I have known my whole life (just do not see her all the time, she sees my parents more.) Her husband (who was there as well) is my mothers best friends (since they were 5) brother.
Needless to say, the fact that people we know and consider family love this Surgeon, makes me feel a whole lot better about everything. May not seem like much, but if he had not been delayed...we would have never seen them and known how good a Surgeon this guy is.
(I'm sure it'll all go well, Dev!)

I don't mind being called pretty much anything, although "Brave volunteer for the second Sun Eater bombing run." would leave me with some bitter foreboding.
Horus is taking Anubis out for walkies, but they shall return for War of the Gods!
Hopefully this will be better than the DC Perez mini series. Although we could really do with some other gods from a different pantheon to be honest.

It occurs to me that "thothkins" sounds like the nickname...you guys, imagine Lash or Spellbinder saying "thoth

But only thothkins gets you NTH HOTSKI.
He's obviously Tom Fatsi....or Grendel.
"Fatsi."

Hey, no offense intended, Hoth! Tom Fatsi is a real dude who had a letter published in an old S&LSH lettercol and eventually found his way to LW. It was a great story in the annals of this site! Plus, he's not fat, apparently.

A couple of days ago I used the MBTA's (Boston's subway system) customer service part of their website to complain about how dark the handicap ramp at the JFK/UMass stop was. I took several pictures (without flash - although I did take a couple with flash and they were just as dark) However I could only attach one picture.
Today as I was going to the store (I cut through the station) I saw a new light attached to one of the other light poles and shining onto the handicap ramp. It was sufficiently dark enough that I could see that this was a vast improvement. I wrote back to thank the MBTA and to suggest an additional light or two would help even more.
So despite all the complaints about the MBTA (and there are some legitimate ones) They do seem to be trying to do their best.

50 years! Just... wow!
lol, If you added up all the years of marriage in my family generation, I don't know if it would add up to 50. There might BE 50 marriages, given how many are on their 3rd or 4th but I don't think the years would add to 50.

On the plus side, I've not heard "What does the Fox Say" and I've not seen the Blurred Lines video either. Woman getting paid to get her clothes off so that men can pose around her pretending to look cool, doesn't really appeal to me.
... succeeded in muting the mental memories of those two songs, thankfully. I really hate listening to Robin Thicke's falsetto.
(there's a parody of the Blurred Lines video out there with men taking their clothes off and women standing around to look "cool". haven't seen it either though).
They all come across as pitiful when I see anything like that.
... had some macadamia nuts today. Oh yeah!
Finished silly hours and silly travelling. Back to normal for next week.
Fed 320 people. Well...not all by myself.
...had more spaghetti. Just the regular kind you buy in a box at the supermarket, though, not the fancy sentient stuff that comes out of a skull hatch.

This weekend, the wife and I are going to see two septugenarian actors perform a sixty year old play in which nothing happens.
To mix it up a bit - in the second act - nothing happens...
again.
And let me tell you, even if
they can...
I... can't freaking wait!

"They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night once more," says a departing Pozzo.
"But each night is but as passage between days, Charles."
"You won't win Magneto. It is the light of hope you see, not of power."
The pair try to leave, but continuity is retconned and they spend another day waiting, retreading old issues.

In quiet moments I'll imagine myself seeing Waiting for Godot.

. . . went to the visitation for the wife of a co-worker. She was 38 and leaves behind a husband and young son.
Got to break out the x-country skis that are useful once or twice a year. Went on a nice ski around the bay and through the neighborhood. I get some looks, which is really the reason I ski.
Then I shoveled and when I was done, I needed to shovel some more. I have to keep up with the neighbor who somehow is able to totally clean off his 30ft drive in less than 10 minutes using a shovel. I mean, CLEAN. Except it wasn't. Six inches of snow. Found out he's in hospital Appendix, lol, snort, snort. I know it hurts, had mine out as a kid. I think I'll buy him some balloons and take them to the hospital. Anyhow, neighbors got together and helped his wife shovel the drive. Not as good as him but she can at least get the car out.

... didn't have enough to eat because I anticipate having too much to eat later!
spent an unusual amount of time in the garden for the time of year.
The river and bay are so frozen, I got my Olympics on and went skiing out my front door. Tomorrow if it's nice, I imagine I might try to make it downtown (5 miles) just so I can get on the bus back carrying ski's. More than likely, I'll make it a couple hundred yards and start thinking how nice a hot cocoa would be.
... finally sat down and started to read "The Superman Files" compiled by Brainiac 5, not bad!

Let's see... if
he is Target #26, then - even though I talked to
him first - geographically, it would make more sense to bump my
original Target #26 to be Target #27. Although... wait... that
other guy is super-close to Target #26. Maybe I should ping him to be #27. I don't really know him that well, but... eh... that never stopped me before. So
then... if potential #27 accepts, original #26 becomes #28, making that
fourth guy - who already said yes if our schedules match up - Target #29. Then that
fifth guy - who actually was supposed to be Target #25
last year - becomes Target #30. Hmmm...
unless! No... no
way I could get
him on board.
Is there? Well...
anything's worth a try, I suppose. If I
could actually line him up, then
he'd be Target #30, and Target #25 from last year would actually be Target #31!
Whew, that's a heck of a line up if I can pull it off.
OK.

So sorry to hear about your former student, BB. Hope your student gets better.
Shoulder wound will heal. Getting better is a longer shot. Waiting for the other shoe to drop, who shot him? Typically, it's kids arguing over something inconsequential and some moron gets offended and points a gun.
Assuming I'm not missing any, this is the third one since Christmas 2012. Equal opportunity: one white, one Hispanic, one black.
Sigh. It's much like that here too. People get annoyed/drunk/angry and shoot or stab each other over the silliest and most trivial things.

Happens here all the time on the bus/rail. I also love when some clown props his legs and ugly-a** feet recliner-style up on a row of seats just to make sure you get the message that he's
KING OF THE WORRRRRRRRLD!Thank Dog that these days, most of my commuting is done during off-hours (weekday afternoons), so I don't have to do anything seeing these buttheads but walk by towards the next empty row and roll my eyes.
Got an email from a school counselor. During a conversation with Seniors who raised concerns that teachers didn't care, the counselor asked them who did. Four names came up unanimously. He was notifying those four.
I guess I should add the word "only" to the "four names." Some of our teachers need better marketing. Some really don't seem to give a crap. Usually when I go to an after school student activity (play, program, athletics), I'm the only non-paid staff member there. Some people don't know what they're missing but I guess that's true in all aspects of life.
sigh
Thanks, it was nice to be noticed but like I wrote, there are some teachers need better marketing. I can think of several other than the four that never say bad things (even in teacher lounge) about the kids and do much around the building to make things go or to provide activities for kids. People really don't know what goes on outside the classrooms, before and after school.
May the world be blessed with more teachers like you, BB.
Hear, hear. Congratulations, BB, I'm glad the kids know and appreciate your concern.
Thanks guys. Didn't mean to turn it into a pat myself on the back.., well, guess I did, but the news did come in a week it was an encouragement to me. Be nice to hear some of that from the Admin on occasion. This is highly a nepotistic (friend, relative, yes man...) place and if anyone suggests it could be better...

... looked for the cat video and found out that Youtube is blocked. Oops!
... felt glad that Fanfie's feeling better!
...dreamed that I was going to visit M. Lash in his 43rd story apartment. I found the building by walking through a very busy urban area, but I didn't know the apartment number. I wandered the building's narrow halls, stopping in various doorways to ask people if they knew Lash. After meeting quite a few pleasant people, I finally found a young woman who knew Lash and would take me to him. Then I woke up.
A very basic plot to the dream, but the details were amazing!

... I got sick too, because of the terrible heat wave. And last night, it rained hard all of a sudden. All this is really messing with my body.
...realized I could afford to buy a condo!
Congrats Cali!! Housewarming party! Yay!!!
... had to take the cat into the vet and she's got an abscess. So, she's going under tomorrow to get the tooth extracted.

Thanks Ibby. It looks pretty bleak. The whole section is being badly affected
![frown frown](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/frown.gif)
And with good news...here's our next poster...
Hope things turn out alright at work and with your cat, thothkins.
... felt a lot better, I plan to come in for work tomorrow and sneak off in the evening for a date with Blaze.
...and that was your good news.
I just found out that a delayed course I was on is no longer the the same course, because the company doing it have updated it.
They cancelled in in Q3 last year and I couldn't make the Q4 one. So, I was due to sit it shortly. But I don't think they picked up the gap between my booking and their new courses coming into play. So, they didn't bother/know to tell me.
The slightly better than poor news is:-
The costs haven't changed. Good because I have doubts my company would fund the difference right now.
I also get to push the date back to sit it, which they were fine with under the circumstances.
And I imagine a lot of the course material will be very similar, so it's not that big a jump.
But
![frown frown](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/frown.gif)
just the same.
Yeah, that was my good news. There hasn't been anything really great to share, sadly.
I understand your frustration. I hope the changes in the course don't affect you negatively, and that for all intents and purposes the company will treat it as the same course.
Reading your post made me think the tone in mine didn't come across as funnily as it was intended. It was supposed to be like a "and that's all the good news folks. Now for more whining" towards the general readership rather than actually meant to be read as for any one person.
If it didn't come across that way, hopefully this post cleared it up a little.
Oh, thanks for clarifying, I do appreciate it. But no worries, I didn't take it negatively. I hope my own post didn't come across as testy or annoyed; I also meant to say that my circumstances are "steady" right now, nothing great but nothing too terrible either.
thanks Ibby.
... picked up the cat from the vet. She had two little teeth removed and came home and has gone through a bowl of tuna. She's only been with me full time for a few years since I moved here, having been with neighbours before that. I got blood tests done. They're all fine too. So, keeping an eye on her for a few days before a checkup. She's not young (13 approx), but it was the first thing that's ever been a problem.
Rudely asked two guys if they were done apologizing to each other for possibly being interpreted as being rude.
I thought we respectfully dealt with it

It's funny, we weren't so much apologizing as thanking each other for being all explanatory
...saw X-men: Days of Future Past.

One scene is
wonderful; if you see it you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Otherwise, it was okay. It was fun to see at least 16 X-Men, but as one reviewer noted, the film fails to focus on its characters and it loses momentum in a convoluted plot. But it probably won't cause any X-fans to quit the franchise.
Thanks for the review, LT. I'm watching it tomorrow. I already had a hunch I wouldn't be blown away, but at least it looks like I will have a pleasant time

Yeah I got that. My response was supposed to be taken as a funny hence the smiley thingy.

I'll see NoFP next week. I'm not too bothered with super hero movies, but it was such a classic story, it's too hard to miss.
I got that you were being "rude" too, BB.
![smile smile](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/smile.gif)
I think it's great we're all being so polite and explanatory.
Gee, I'm turning into Monstress! Soon I'll start calling you all "dear" and recommending fuchsia vests to go with your vivid eye colors.

I think we were awed by the same scene, LT. Man, I am now a big fan of speedsters
![wink wink](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/wink.gif)
I very much agree, some characters were kind of just there. But, at least most of them got their good battle moments. Blink is just awesome, my family was talking about how cool she was. Awesome! Pleased to see a relatively obscure X-Man get so many good moments.

Congrats and good luck on the condo Caliente. Exciting times.
Today I started packing for my annual pilgrimage to week-long teacher school in Exeter, NH. Made my "reservation" (no card, no down) at the musty ma-pop I stay at in Vermont. Looking forward to my real maple syrup breakfast the next day, then on to Exeter.
... Excited for you, Cali and BB! Thanks for sharing.

Which, as all kids viewing know, a mofo is a small African tree dwelling mammal. The speed of it's vast leaps through the foilage often leave it disoriented.
..found out I was no longer at risk of the chop at work. They are going to much around with the structure though.
Get better soon, Fickles.
Get better soon, Fanfie! Looking forward to your reviews. I don't chime in because I haven't really followed any series besides the Legion, and a little bit of Justice League, but I do read from time to time.
I'm glad to hear your job is safe, thothkins. I hope the reorganization doesn't disrupt things too much. And I really hope your company does a good job at communications all throughout. We always advise our clients to communicate, communicate, communicate; the anxiety can be an awful thing for everyone involved.

My thanks to Thoth and Ibby for the get-well wishes. And I echo Ibby's reply to Thoth about the job situation.
Glad you're feeling better Fickles.

One more day in New Hampshire for teacher school then back to Toledo. Two courses: the Math of Origami and Astronomy. Both have been fascinating. There are teachers here from all over: even one from Manilla, IB.
Of course I found the local comic shop and picked up two graphic novels off the cheap table. "Walk-in" by Dave Stewart (Eurythmics). That's started out pretty good. After that I'll read "Astro City." I thought I had once read good things about that title so I picked it up.
Good luck, Ex!
Glad you're enjoying teacher school, BB! Both the Math of Origami and Astronomy sound interesting, all right. Glad you got to meet people from all over. I'm sure my countryman (or woman) is enjoying the much cooler weather in New Hampshire

... Got stuck in terrible, terrible traffic
... Only have to go into the office to pick up some mail ... and I still can't manage to do that!
Sometimes I hate going to the office too Peebz!
... Had to cancel my vacation leave
I had to cancel a leave day last week Ibby, so you have my sympathy. Made up for it today... by sleeping a lot.
Thanks, thothkins. It's easier to be made to cancel a leave if there are no travel plans. I don't have a plane ticket or hotel reservations to hide behind
![frown frown](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/frown.gif)
I slept a lot today too, but I'm still sleepy!
I think I'm oversleepy now. My sleeping patterns have pretty much given up and gone back to the Sandman.
Course all the good Sandman slots are taken, so I get Garrett Sanford.

Like with Peebz, haven't been able to make travel plans lately. My family and friends are frustratingly inflexible. But I'll keep planning! Blaze and I are determined to see as much of the world as possible.

I hadn't any bottled water either. Some sort of global shortage I shouldn't wonder. If only we knew who the culprit was...

Oy. Just don't get caught up in any riots, please. (I heard about the water scare on another board that has posters from your neck of the woods, BB.)
Fortunately, no riots. The alarm had gone out at 2am. I woke at 6 and checked the on-line paper, saw the alarm; do not drink, bath or even touch. Read it again to make sure I wasn't dreaming, then got in the car to get bottled water for me and the neighbors at the local 24hr. It wasn't crowded but I barely got out of my car and a guy said they were out. So I decided to head north to Detroit but decided the try my luck at the first town in, about 20 mi into Mich. People were already filling up.
It's a thing that we're not well prepared for, except for all the zombie apocolypse movies and that's exactly what it was like. People not thinking. People reacting. There were a few bone heads back in the city I guess. Everyone was polite and helping each other where I was. The Kroger and Walmart people were probably more frantic than we were. A LOT of outlying communities started bringing in water to the city to help us out.
Back to not being prepared. It was the "do not touch" and the no indication of when it would be over that guided behaviors. Someone filled up a couple carts so everyone else figured that's what you were SUPPOSED to do. Like it was going be a forever thing. It really didn't occur to anyone to just get a couple cases.
Well, it was an only few days thing so a lot of people have a lot of extra bottled water hanging around. We can expect a few more of these before summer is over so it may come in handy but local governments should use this as a model for how to prepare, but it looks like it's going to be more a lot of looking for people that can be blamed for something.
The last two neighborhoods to get the all-clear? The one where I teach and the one where I live. And me spending the last two years between Toledo and Cleveland getting tested on why my digestive track doesn't seem to want to work. hmmmmmmm.
