Here is a new game I thought I would try out. Just like the "I'm thinking of an animal" thread, posters ask yes-or-no question to find out what city/town/village I am thinking of. This should give us all a chance to beef up our geography, huh?
There are only a few rules:
1) Questions should be of the "yes or no" variety.
2) Try to make the towns something that is visible on a map. A fishing village of 3 Innuit might be too small, for example.
Ok, off we go...try to guess...
Where am I?
Um..I guess I wasn't clear. Yes, I am in a city. It will always be a city or town or village anywhere in the world.
Are you asking if it is a city rather than a town? Yes, I would consider this a city.
Nope, not in the Americas.
Are you in a country to the west of Austria?
does that city have a big special attraction such as the Leaning Pisa, Eiffel Tower, Colossuem, etc. etc.?
Supes, it does not have a big special attraction.
Ibby..It shares some longitude (and latitide) lines with Austria.
Was it formerly behind the Iron Curtain?
It is in Germany.
Here is an additional hint: it is one of the 50 most populous cities in Germany.
Is it a city whose name is associated with a particular food?
It is not Berlin.
Nope - the name isn't associated with any particular food.
That rules out Hamburg and Frankfurt.
Is it in the northern part of the country?
is this city within 25 miles from Berlin?
It is in the northern part of the country.
It is not Cologne.
Nope...further than that from Berlin.
It is not quite as far north as Bremen. Actually, It is closer to the middle of Germany, rather than the north or the south. It is pretty far west in Germany, though.
No...Bonn is a little south of this city.
Very close...Dusseldorf is a little to the southeast of this city.
Munich is nowhere near this city.
Essen is close...but you need to look a little more southwest of Essen.
Wrong direction Chaim - you need to look southwest of Essen - but not by much.
Here's a big hint - it starts with a 'K."
Well, I'm reduced to looking at a map now. Krefeld?
Yes! It is Krefeld Germany!
Krefeld wasn't just a random pick. Here is the wikipedia article about Krefeld:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krefeld Pay attention to the third paragraph where it talks about students from Indiana going to Krefeld. In 1982, for 7 glorious weeks, I was one of those students. I wasn't allowed to speak English, and I ate many things that I didn't know what they were. The food was amazing whether I knew what it was or not! I stayed with a German family, and went to school as well. One of our field trips was to a racetrack. (horse racing) Still not sure what I was supposed to learn there. I also had my first experience with alcohol. And my second. And my third. And..well, you get the idea. Good times...
Anyway, Chaim, you are up.
Is this city/town/whatever in the Americas?
I gave up after Essen. Even looking at the map, I had never heard of anything else nearby.
Yes, my location is in the Americas.
Ha! Rocky, you did most of the work, and Chaim swooped in for the win at the end. Anyway...
Is it in North America?
Sorry for that. I'd have been happy to "do the work" as well, but I only discovered the thread late. I like the animal game well enough, but geography is one of my favorite subjects, so expect to see me a lot in this thread.
It is in North America.
Geography is one of my favorites, too. And no worries, Chaim. We all help each other in these threads!
Is it in the USA?
Is it east of the Mississippi?
It is not east of the Mississippi.
Is it west of the Rocky Mountains (not named for me, alas)?
Is it south of Lincoln, Nebraska?
It is not west of the Rocky Mountains.
It is south of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Is it in the state of Texas?
It is in the state of Texas.
Is it Rockhopper Lad's city of Houston?
Is it a city of fewer than 100,000 people?
It is not Dallas nor is it Houston.
It is populated by more than 100,000 people.
Is it a main city in the a metro area (as opposed to a very populous suburb)?
It is a main city in its metro area.
We'll get the obvious out of the way. Is it San Antonio?
Guess I'll just go down the list...
Is it Austin?
I had a feeling it would devolve to that. But I guess at some point (in the animals game as well) it always will, barring a lucky first guess.
It is not Austin.
Is it in the northern half of the state?
If you take the northernmost point of latitude in the entire state and the southernmost point of latitude in the entire state, and draw a line at the center (which is, BTW, 31 degrees 10 minutes North), this city would lie south of that line.
Is the name of the city have any religious meaning?
The name of the city has no religious significance.
It is not Pasadena (which, incidentally, is in California, not Texas. And is also not a "main city in its metro area" - it would be considered part of the Los Angeles metro area).
Pasadena, Texas, is 16th in population on the list I am using, Chaim.
Is it Brownsville?
Huh...never even thought to look if there was one. Consider me chastened.
It is not Brownsville.
Oh, darn - I just realized I misread my calculations. The city i'm referring to lies NORTH of that midpoint line (31-10), not south. I forgot that higher numbers mean further closer to the pole, not closer to the equator.
Sorry for the wasted time, folks.
Well, crap. Now I gotta start at the top of the list again. Bad Chaim!
Pasadena, Texas, is a suburb of Houston. I have a employee who lives there.
Is this city in the west half of Texas?
lance has it - El Paso. Sorry it was such a hassle! I guess I got disoriented, sitting here in my castle.
BTW, that's why I had to give such a detailed answer on the north/south question. Where El Paso lies on the East-West direction, it touches both the north and south borders of the state of Texas, so I couldn't give a simple answer as I might have for a different city, where the state is wider.
So, Lance, are you somewhere in the Americas?
I can see why you were confused. It's pretty much smack dab in the middle if we divide the whole state in half.
Of course, El Paso is about 750 miles from Houston. We're closer to Tallahasse, Florida, than we are to El Paso!
Are you in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere?
Based on Chaim's phrasing, I was guessing it had to be (vertically) near the middle of the state. Anyway...
I am thinking of a city...and it is in the southern hemisphere. It is not in the Americas.
Waaait a minute! Chaim, you have a castle!? Well, I take back all the rotten things I was thinking about you! Ima comin' over! (Do you have a moat, too, by the way? Full of crocodiles and electric eels and pirahna and stuff like that?)
Is English the primary language in this city?
IS it Aukland, New Zealand?
It is in Australia. It is likely one of the 10 most well-known cities in Australia.
Is it on the eastern coast of Australia?
Yes! It is Sydney!
You are up Supes!
lance:
Chaim, you have a castle!? Well, I take back all the rotten things I was thinking about you! Ima comin' over! (Do you have a moat, too, by the way? Full of crocodiles and electric eels and pirahna and stuff like that?)
If I had that, then maybe no one would have shot me while robbing it.
At least in Texas they have sheriffs who know where the facts is.
Are you serious Chaim? Someone robbed you and you got shot? I am not believing any more propaganda about how safe New York City is...
Maybe we should just start guessing?
Is it in the Northern hemisphere Supes?
Sorry, lance, I guess you don't listen to much "classic rock." Most of the odder lines after I revealed the answer to be El Paso came from the Steve Miller Band's song "Take the Money and Run", which is pretty memorable for its terrible forced rhymes. (El Paso - Hassle - Castle; Texas - Facts is)
I'll join in the guessing, too, along with lance's prior question, we'll narrow it down to a quarter of the world:
Is it in the Americas?
yeah!!! okay
#1 - yes it s in Northern Hemisphere
#2 - yes it s in Americas.
#3 - yes it s in USA
#4 -
sorry.
Is it east of the Mississippi?
#5 -
Is it in a state that was part of the Confederacy?
#6 - unfortunately

#9 -

#10 -

Is it in a state with an Atlantic Ocean shore?
Is it north of Birmingham, Alabama?
#11 -
yes state with Atlantic Ocean shore!
#13 -
no not north of Birmingham, Alabama
Is it on the city on the Atlantic coast (as opposed to the Gulf coast)?
#14 -
yes it s in Florida!
#15 -
yes city on Atlantic coast!
#17 -
MIAMI!! thats when I grew up when I was younger way back in 70s. Loved Orange Bowl and loved Miami Dolphins, the only team that ever had an undefeated season than any team!!!!
#18 - sorry. not Jacksonville.
OK..I have teleported somewhere else.
Hint - it is not a tree sloth...

Is it Managua, Nicaragua?
Is it San Salvador, El Salvador?
Well, I'm narrowing it down bit by bit...
Is it Tegucigalpa, Honduras?
Is it Guatemala City, Guatemala?
is it somewhere in Brazil?
Is is neither in Peru nor Belize.
Is it Panama City, Panama? That doesn't sound like it should be farther north than San José, but the isthmus has some weird bends to it.
According to Wikipedia, it's pretty close, but Panama City is indeed south of San Jose. San Jose is 9 56 N, Panama City is 8 59 N. And since my El Paso adventure, I am certain that this makes San Jose further north.
But you're clearly on the right "trick hint" track. It looks like Caracas, Venezuela is actually further north (10 30 N) than San Jose - that will be my next guess.
It is Caracas!
Good job Chaim! I thought you guys were gonna guess all over cantral America before someone looked over to the side and noticed that due to the funky isthmus, the northernmost part of Venezuela is north of some parts of the isthmus - such as San Jose. I was waiting for someone to simply ask if it was in South America.
Anyway, take it away Chaim!
Thanks, that was indeed tricky. But where am I, guys?
I was wondering how it could be north of San Jose and not be in North America--Central America is usually considered part of North America. It makes sense now.
Are you in the Americas?
It really wasn't intended to be tricky - it was the "north or south of San Jose" that threw a monkey wrench in the works, I think.
Chaim, are you in the southern hemisphere?
And are you having fun there?
I know you didn't mean it that way. It just so happened that it became such.
I am not in the Americas.
I am not in the Southern Hemisphere.
Are you west of the Caspian Sea?

Are you in an a country on the Mediterranean?
Are you in Istanbul, not Constantinople?
The country I am in does not have a Mediterranean coast.
And, given that, I am obviously not in Istanbul. Not that what it's called is anyone's business but the Turks.
Are you in a country on the Arabian peninsula?
I am in a country on the Arabian peninsula.
I am indeed in Mecca. This game is pretty much the only way a non-Muslim can say that!
Yeah, pretty much.
All right, where am I now?
Are you in the Western Hemisphere?

*oh groan* I must be thinking of --- Cambridge....sorry...so that place?
No problem, Supes.
Nope. Not Cambridge.
Hurrah, Quis! I am indeed in Coventry!
The Western Hemisphere question was the hardest to answer. Coventry is located at 1 degree, 30 minutes West--technically in the Western Hemisphere, but, in the popular mind the Western Hemisphere is the Americas, so I had to qualify that answer.
Where are you, Quis?
Are you in the Americas, Quis?

Well, I guessed you wouldn't go so obvious, but are you in Boston?
I actually did go so obvious. I am in Boston, for the game and for real.

Are you on the west coast of Africa?
Have you ever been in a Turkish prison?
I am in a country where a year's difference would have made a difference on a map.
I am not in the Republic of Sudan.
I am not in a nation with a coastline.
I have never been in a Turkish prison, but I do like movies about gladiators. Now knock off that red zone shit, you know what this is really about - you want me to have an abortion.
Are you in Juba, South Sudan?
Rockhopper is correct, I am in Earth's newest national capital city!
Thanks!
I'm glad it was Juba, because I don't think I know the name of another city in South Sudan!
And, Chaim, thanks for the
Airplane! reference! I love that movie!
*Poof*
Where have I got myself to now, guys?
"poof" San Francisco?? Just joking.
Are you in a country that starts with the letters p-z?
I am not in a country with a name starting with a letter between P and Z. That rules out San Francisco!
I am in the Americas; therefore, I am not in Australia.
Are you in South America?
BTW, you can thank lance for kicking off the Airplane! reference thing. I was just playing along.
I am not in South America.
And thanks to both you guys for the
Airplane! references.
Are you in a nation which is entirely on an island or islands?
Surely you aren't in the USA?

(Sorry about the above - with a 4-yr-old running around I sometimes don't pay enough attention to the clues.)
*sigh* I also don't always remember to read to the next page.
Let's see, are you in Ottowa?
No problem, Lance.

Are you north of the equator?
Muah? I'm not sure whether I should be offended or not...
By the way, I wanna take a minute to thank everyone for playing. This thread should hit 500 posts before it is a month old, which makes it a very popular game. I really didn't know if a geography game would fly, but so far it has gone much better than I expected.
The only down side is that there seems to only be a few people playing this game. Hopefully, we will get more people willing to participate.
#1 - no not in Americas
#2 - yes north of equator

Thank you for starting it. Between this and the animal threads, you've brought some much-needed life in Spaceopoly!
Geography is one of those things that you're either interested in or not. I'm sure there are some folks who just haven't jumped in yet.
I hope you are right, John. The "I'm thinking of an annual" thread is a great idea, and I am glad to see people playing it as well. I have been trying to come up with ideas for ther similar games as well.
Let's see...
I'm thinking of a plant?
I'm thinking of a celebrity?
I'm thinking of a language?
I'm thinking of a supermodel? (which I might be anyway) (thinking of one, I mean, not that I am a supermodel) (although I could be, y'know)
I'm thinking of a comic book character?
I dunno, just thinking in general...
I'm thinking of a supermodel? (which I might be anyway) (thinking of one, I mean, not that I am a supermodel) (although I could be, y'know)
This will really work well, I'm sure. It could feature questions such as:
Is she thin?
Is she hot?
Has she ever appeared on a magazine cover?
I'm sure this will help narrow down the field until the answer is found.
#6 -
#12 - Chaim -
or.....if anyone who likes to watch ATNM....would know the answers.
Is this city a national capital?
#13 -
yes national capital
#14 -
not in Athens (although it did came to me the last time....hmmm maybe next time?
)
#15 -
YES! I was thinking of Tom of Finland so then it led to the capital of Helsinki.
your turn!
Ok, cool...*poof*
Where'd I go? Um, come and find me guys...
Are you North of that Imaginary Line that May or May Not Be Capitalized?

I am north of the EqUaToR.
I am sure this country was never part of the British Empire.
I am not in Zrfff, nor am I in a handbasket. (New debate! Is handbasket 1 word or 2? Let the mud slinging (mudslinging?) begin!)
Handbasket is one word, as our good friend Helena can attest.
Are you in Asia?
Nope, not in the Americas.
Yes, I am in Europe again.
I had to look that one up, John. Nope, I am not in the Eurozone. Good question, though!

This country sort of participated in World War I and World War II
And from the previous page, I am not in the Americas.
Are you in a country that was at any time under communist rule?
Are you in a red zone or a white zone? There is no stopping in a red zone.
I am in Asia. I could have been in Europe if I had picked a different city of this country. So, I am not in Italy. This country was indeed under communist rule at one time.
I am not in Georgia, y'all. I an in Kazakhstan
Are you in Oral, Kazakhstan?
Are you in a city that has hosted an Olympics (summer or winter)?
This city has never hosted the Olympics. It is not in the Americas.
Is this city off the beaten path like Astana Kazakhstan?
That depends on which path you are beating.
I would probably answer that in the affirmative, but I'll give a hint.
I can say with some certainty that no one playing this game has ever actually been to this city, but everyone has heard of it.
I will guess Nairobi before going to bed.
Are you in a landlocked country?
Are you south of the equator?
I am north of the Equator and in a landlocked country; therefore, I am not in Nairobi.
I'm not in Egypt, Supes, because I am in Mali.
Very good, Lance! I am indeed in Timbuktu (or, as they are more likely to spell it in Mali, Tombouctou)!
John, your hint about "everyone has heard of it" was enough.

I wasn't quite sure about how to answer "off the beaten path" because while Timbuktu is a remote place, its name is so well-known, even if most people couldn't tell you what country it's in.
So, are you in the Americas?
Are you north of the equator?
I am north of the equator, but I am not in the Americas.
I will go ahead and give a vague hint - I am sure most (probably all) of you have heard of this place.
Oh, and thanks to Edgar Rice Burroughs and the Tarzan books for educating me about Timbuktu.

I am in the Americas.
Hmm...I thought Nepal recently did install a communist government.
Quis, are you in the USA?
Upon reading, it seems that while Communist parties seem to have quite a say in Nepal's government, the country does not do that "centrally planned economy" that communist governments do.

Does the state you're in have a football team in either the NFC north division or AFC north division?
This state does have a football team that is either in the NFC North or AFC North.
I had to look that up. I knew there was a football team in this state, but I had no idea which conference or division they were in.

NFC North: Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and Detroit Lions.
so no Indiana.

That is correct, I did ask about the state specifically.
Are you in Michigan?
I am not in the UP, nor I am I in Ann Arbor.

Is it a suburb of Detroit?
This city is indeed in Metro Detroit.
does this suburb starts with a letter of "S"?
This city's name does not begin with "S" (Rules out Sterling Heights and Southfield).
And we have a winner.
I am not in Grosse Pointe nor in fun and fashionable Ferndale.
I am in Dearborn, Michigan, home of the Ford Motor Company and the best Middle Eastern food I've ever had (I went to grad school at Wayne State in Detroit).
You're up, Chaim.
Dearborn, home of the Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, is a great place to visit. I'd go back again and again as much as I get the opportunity.
But where the heck am I now?
Are you in the Americas?
What did you go to grad school for, John?
I am not in the Americas.

does this city start with the letter somewhere in between C and S?
Are you in Bangalore/Bengaluru?

This country was never under communist rule, nor does it border Germany.

Does the country you in have a Mediterranean coast?
It does not have a Mediterranean coast.
I am not in Portugal.
Here's a hint: This country is in Europe the same way Japan is in Asia.
Are you in Great Britain?
[Interlude]
I am really having a blast in this game. The fact that it seems to have a few core players and that it is in a yes-or-no format got me thinking of What's My Line? and, well...
Lance: John Daly
Chaim: Bennett Cerf
EDE: Steve Allen
Future: Fred Allen
Supes: Tony Randall
Quis: Arlene Francis
Rocky: Dorothy Kilgallen (of course)
[/Interlude]

are we in Cardiff, Wales?
Are you in Rhondda Cynon Taf?
I am neither in Cardiff nor in Rhondda Cynon Taf, though the latter is an awful lot of fun to say.
It is! That was my criteria for picking it.
Are you in Newport, Wales?
I am not in Newport, which is far more fun to say in Welsh, in which it is Casnewydd.
That is more fun! How about Swansea, Wales?
Not Swansea, either, though its name in Welsh, Abertawe, isn't as much fun to say as the others.
does this city starts with a letter from J to T?
Its name (in both English and Welsh) begins with a letter that falls in the J to T range, though in a different letter in each language.
I am not in Powys, which is a county, not a city.
ops sorry....is it Llandudno?
I am not in Llandudno, which as also fun to say.
does this city start with a "L"?
It neither starts with "L" nor with "LL", which are regarded as separate letters in the Welsh language.
ah allright that helps eliminate some cities....so how about Newport, Wales?
Still not in Newport, as I told Future on the last page.
ohhhh..Shrewsberg, Wales?xxxxxxxx oops...make that St. David, Wales?
I think you mean "Shrewsbury", but that's just over the border in England.
Ah, I see your correction. The name of the city is St. Davids, but that is indeed where I am. For the record, in Welsh it's called Tyddewi.
ah! wow you sure do travel a lot around the world, don't you?
I only did visit 49 out of 50 states - all of them at least twice. only one state that s been elusive and I have been nagging my partner to go there...he won't. grumble..grumble...been wanting to go to Alaska somehow...
okay now I have a place in my mind right now...go ahead.
Are you in the United States?

okay now I have a place in my mind right now...go ahead. I've read a lot more than I've actually traveled.
Are you north of the Equator?
Supes, as a member of the 50-state club, I know you'll find your way to Alaska eventually. When someone gets this close, they find a way to complete the set. I know.
Are you on an island?
not in USA; not in Asia; Ha! not in Alaska (way too obvious); YES North of Equator; no not on an island.
Chaim - you have been to 50 states all?
I have, and to all 10 provinces of Canada as well. My wife and I love travelling, and the kids seem to enjoy it as well.
Are you in Asia?
Are you in a German-speaking country?
Silly me - didn't notice the "not in Asia" above.
Are you in a place that was once under communist rule?
Does the name of the country you are in have 6 or more letters in its name?
Hey guys sorry to keep you waiting since I was out all day in SF celebrating the Folsom Street Fair....
now I am back and its 2:30 am. heh. yeah I am kind of pooped out.
okay back to the game:
---Yes, somewhere in Europe
--- Cool Chaim, as I hate to say that , I mentioned saying no in Asia...
--- hmm German speaking country? wow thats news to me I will have to get back to you on that one....
--- okay now I am back.... quite fascinating to find out more....okay no it s not a German Speaking country... good thing I verified it first before answering for sure.
----no, never mentioned that was under communist rule at anytime....no mention so thus, no.
---- ehhh...good question! Yes it does have 6 or more letters in its name. I like that question.
---- okay continue!
<---- this guy is gonna hit the sack because he has to get up at 6 am to go to work. ack!
Does your country of the city border Russia?
Is the country you're in a member of the European Union?

Are you in one of the 25 smallest countries in the world?
yes smallest countries.... I believe so.
Does this country start with an 'L'?
---- Nope not start with L (although I can tell what country you are thinking of...
)
---- Nope not in Vatican City definitely.
yes Andorra....
Are you in the capital Andorra la Vella?
yes that s the capital I am thinking of! the highest capital city in Europe....
when I was 6 or 7 can't remember my age...when I was younger, my grandmother had an old set of Encyclopedia and Nursery Rhyme (I remember that it has about 33 books...maybe I misremembered....oh well)....at first I opened up the Encyclopedia....which showed a NEAT picture of the map of each countries all over the world...(remember it was in 1970s...) and I was fascinated by it....beauty kelly forest green color and details on mountains, roads, rivers, lakes, ahhhh I read the maps all through A to Z encyclopedia books...ah....it was the most quiet time that My mom ever appreciated.
when I came across Europe and its countries - Spain and France - I noticed a small dot between Spain and France - and it said "Andorra"....I was mystified by that name and wondering why I have not heard of it before....I knew France and Spain, but not Andorra..(and Luxembourg, too!
) ....but it was Andorra that really won me over and been fascinated...I was in awe that the country is so small and stood up to the "giants" such as France/Spain/Germany/Italy...I have been fascinating to that for many years....and even saw the pictures...wow so much beauty there and makes me want to visit there someday. So I am hoping I ll be able to visit Andorra sometimes soon...real soon.
So Q, you go!
I share your fascination with Andorra. I saw a pic when I was a kid too. Small world
OK, I am somewhere in the world.
Are you in a country that borders the Pacific?
I would say that the country borders the Pacific.
Does your city have an estimated population of more than 3,000,000 people?
There are less than 3,000,000 people living in this city.
Are you in a country that also borders China?
I am not on an island and I am not in a country that borders China.
Are you in a city in India?
I am not in a city in India nor am I in South Korea.
Hm. Are you not in a country that borders China because you're in China itself? (random, I know)
I am not in China.
From the previous page: I am in Asia and border the Pacific Ocean. I am not on an island. The city I am in has a population under 3 million. And the country does not border China.
Thanks for the summary, Quis.
Are you in an ASEAN nation? (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, East Timor, Brunei - though half of these are ineligible!)
Specifically, are you in Vietnam?
Does the name of your country have more than 7 letters?
Are you in the Asian part of Russia?
I am in an Asian country (as specified by Invisible Brainiac), but not Vietnam and not an Asian part of Russia (no Vladivostok) The name of the country does have more than 7 letters in its name.
Coolness.
*Poof*
All right, guys, where am I this time?
I sure do get around.
Are you south of the equator?
Are you in a city where English is the primary language.
I am north of the Equator in a city where English is the primary language.
Going to take a wild guess. Are you in Aberdeen Scotland?
I am in the US; therefore, I am not anywhere in Europe, including Aberdeen.
Are you east of the Mississippi River?
I am east of the Mississippi.
Are you above the Mason Dixon line?
I am not above the Mason-Dixon Line.
Are you in a city that hosts a circuit party?
Does the state you are in have a coastline?
I am not in Virginia or Georgia. This state does have a coastline. I doubt there has ever been a circuit party in this city.
I will give a hint: The Mason-Dixon and coastline questions may be very misleading.
Are you in a city with a population greater than 200,000?
I am in a city with a population less than 200,000.
Are you in the city that the Monopoly board is based on aka Atlantic City?
are you in the state that has two words?
I am in a one-word state, thus not in Atlantic City. I am not in Delaware.
Hmmm.... a one word state south of the Mason-Dixon line, east of the Mississippi, and not Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, or Georgia. That leaves Florida, Alabama, or Missisippi. Parts of Louisiana would work too, as part of Louisiana is east of the Mississippi river.
Are you in Florida?
As I said above, I am not in Florida. Remember also that I was asked if I (that is, the city I am in) is south of Mason-Dixon. I never said the entire state was.
are you in Pennsylvania? (can see why you said that the Mason-Dixon and coastline being misleading...)
I am not in Pennsylvania, the southern border of which forms the Mason-Dixon Line, but as you've hinted, a coastline does not necessarily mean a border on the ocean.
It is not Alabama.
I'm going to give some more hints:
The city is south of the latitude of the Mason-Dixon line.
The state in which it is located has a coastline, but does not border an ocean (the Gulf of Mexico is part of the Atlantic Ocean).
We have already determined that it is the United States, east of the Mississippi River. It is a city of fewer than 200,000 inhabitants.
then it sounds like it can be either Missouri or Arkansas...but the problem is....coastline?!? you mean the coastline is like a part of Mississippi River?? Hmmm...
does this state have more than 7 letters?
It is neither Missouri nor Arkansas. The coastline in question is not a river (though rivers do form part of this state's borders).
This state has more than seven letters.
It is not Kentucky.
Again, the city is below the Mason-Dixon's latitude. I didn't say the whole state was.
Are you in Metropolis, Illinois?
Is your city located in the northern part of the state in question?
I am not in Tennessee, nor in the northern part of a state.
I am in Metropolis, Illinois.
The Mason-Dixon Line is at 39 dgrees, 43 minutes north. Metropolis, Illinois is at 37 degrees, 9 minutes north. Illinois extends quite far south and Metropolis is near the very bottom of the state.
As for the coastline, Illinois borders on Lake Michigan (admittedly at the other end of the state), which is considered coastline in at least the sense of the term of tidal shoreline. There has been at least one other round where Pennsylvania was described as having a coastline--which it does on Lake Erie. If that's too confusing, the word "seacoast" may be less ambiguous.
Anyway, on to Eryk.
For the record, PA also has a coastline on the Delaware Estuary (which one might argue is part of the ocean). I'd agree with counting coastlines on the Great Lakes for the general question of "Does it have a coastline?", however.
Anyway, I suspected you were in Illinois based on the clues, but it took me awhile to come up with somewhere significant enough in the wasteland of Southern Illinois that you might be!
I probably won't be back on until tomorrow morning, but, in the meantime... Where am I?
Except for maybe the college town Carbondale and the historically important Cairo (pronounced like Kayro Syrup), I don't think there is another city in Southern Illinois most people would have heard of, but, of course, I knew someone in this crowd would know Metropolis.
Are you north of the Equator?

Are you north of the Equator? *groan* I should have known better about Metropolis!
I have been to Carbondale, Ill before....way back in 1994....SIU (Southern Ill Univ, IIRC) and famous horse harness racing. what an interesting week there, heh.
Question: are you in the mountains?
Does your city have a subway system?
I am not north of the Equator, and not in Europe nor the Americas. I am not in the mountains. I am not in Asia. And I'm almost certain my city does not have a subway system (though I'm pretty sure it does have a Subway restaurant).
I am neither in Australia nor South Africa.
are you in south america?
Nope, not in South America.
I am in New Zealand. But where?
I am not in Wellington nor Christchurch.
is the city outside North and South NZ Islands?
It is on either the North or South Island, and is neither Timaru, Dunedin, nor Queenstown.
It is not on the South Island.

Lance has it. New Plymouth is actually one of my "must visit" places when I eventually manage to take a trip to New Zealand!
Ok, cool. *poof*
Um, let's see...where am I now?

Right neck of the woods - but I am a little south of both of those.
Yes! Home to both Tom Bodett (We'll leave the light on for ya!) and Jewel.
Hey Supes! Where'd ya go!?

Are you in Bonita Springs?
I'll restate my above question: Is the city you are in north of Tampa?
no to Sarasota, no to Pensacola, no to Bonita Springs, no not the north of Tampa...
i ll have to say no to Key West....although it s close.
nope to Marathon, nope to Key Largo...hmmm...
after I review all the questions that were given to me and I answered....perhaps there are two questions that I should have expanded...but I am not sure if I should have given the hint....for example....Future asked me if the city has the population of more than 150,000...and I answered it right away saying nope - "less than 150K"...it makes me realize that you guys are still thinking of city and I dont know if the rule of playing the game saying that I must have thinking of which city to pick but it simply says "where am I?" never said "city"....
clue: Key West is the closest....but there is a hint there....then Key Largo...what three things do they have in common?
Are you in the Dry Tortugas?
no...a little farther than Dry tortugas....hint: its attracting the tourists because of the most "______________________" point....a lot of people taking pictures of standing proud saying "I did it! "....I did it twice....*chuckle*
Are you in Key West National Wildlife Refuge?
Scratch that - are you on the western dry rocks?
Yes I am on Ballast Key! the southernmost point of the USA, (48 contiguous states)....I have a picture of me and my sister standing on my Uncle's boat and the island is a private owned by someone I don t know...but it was famous filmed such as James Bond movies..(which one I dont know...) and that many famous artists and writers and others visited there. been there a few times.
one of the most beautiful islands and ocean ever. I do miss Florida.

According to the rules Lance posted on page one:
Here is a new game I thought I would try out. Just like the "I'm thinking of an animal" thread, posters ask yes-or-no question to find out what city/town/village I am thinking of. This should give us all a chance to beef up our geography, huh?
There are only a few rules:
1) Questions should be of the "yes or no" variety.
2) Try to make the towns something that is visible on a map. A fishing village of 3 Innuit might be too small, for example.
Ok, off we go...try to guess...
Where am I?
According to the rules, yes, it is supposed to be a city, town or village.

Thanks for the post, Rocky! My pick's a yes for all those, thankfully.
Are you north of the Equator?
Are you at or below sea level?
I am in Asia, north of the equator, and I am above sea level.
Are you east of the Iran/Iraq border?
Are you north or south of Tokyo?
I'll answer all questions on directions as if I was looking at a flat map of the type used in schools. Yes, I'm east of the Iran/Iraq border. I'm also south of Tokyo.
Yes, the place I am in is located on an island.
Recap: I am in Asia, north of the equator, east of the Iran/Iraq border, South of Tokyo.
I am on an island, am not in China, and am above sea level.
Are you in the Philippines?
Yes, I am in the Philippines.
Let's get the obvious one out of the way: Are you in Manila?
Good question, but no, I am not in Manila.
Are you on the island of Luzon?
Are you in the City of San Jose del Monte?
Are you in the northern half of Luzon?
I had to check, since Luzon is irregularly-shaped, but yes. I am in the Northern half.
Are you in the Tagalog language region?
If we define the Tagalog language region as Central and Southern Luzon, then no, I am not in that region.
Do people in your city speak Ilocano?
Yes, Ilocano is one of the languages spoken there.
Nope, not there (though it is a wonderful place to visit - you can drive around the sand dunes, see the mansions of our former President, and there's a UNESCO World Heritage Church in Paoay. Plus the Bangui windmills, and the lovely beaches of Pagudpud!)
Are you in beautiful Vigan?
Not there either, but you're right, it is beautiful! Love the Vigan delicacies (empanadas or meat pies, and longganisa - a type of sausage), and the old Spanish architecture. There's also a nearby (well, relatively) church that's overlooked - Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion in Santa Maria, about an hour or two south of Vigan. It's a beautiful red brick structure in the Baroque style.
I just wanted to take a minute and thank everyone for playing. This game was one of those that I mentally debated for quite some time. Honestly, I didn't expect it to succeed at all. I decided to try it anyway, and we recently passed the 1000 post mark. This thread reached that milestone even faster than the original "animal" thread, which might make this the fastest-to-locking thread ever.
Thanks to all of you geography afficianados for playing!
This calls for a celebration!
and thank YOU for starting such a wonderful thread - always great to see one of your threads gain such longevity.
Are you in the Ilocos region?
Nope, not in the Ilocos region. Look East or South, young man!
Recap:
I am in the northern half of Luzon Island in the Philippines.
I am in the Tagalog region (Central or Southern Luzon), but am not in Ilocos. I am not in Manila.
Note, Manila can refer to Manila City, the capital city; or Metro Manila, the capital region. I'm referring to the entire capital region here.
I am in a place where Ilocano is spoken (though it may not be the only language).
I am above sea level (which should narrow it down a bit).
Er, I hope the choice of country doesn't dissuade everyone besides Doctor One from guessing!
Here's a map to get you started:

OK, so now I´m confused. Are you or are you not in the Tagalog region?
My next question: are you in Gitnang Luzon (Region III)? (thank you Wikipedia!)
Ack! Facepalm.
Good catch, doctor. I mistyped. No, I am NOT in the Tagalog region. I am also not in Region III (Gitnang Luzon). Look further North young man
Recap:
I am in the northern half of Luzon Island in the Philippines.
I am not in the Tagalog region (Central or Southern Luzon), Region III (Gitnang or Central Luzon), Ilocos or Manila.
I am in a place where Ilocano is spoken (though it may not be the only language).
I am above sea level (which should narrow it down a bit).
Are you in Cordillera?
Actually, I´m going to go ahead and guess Baguio City
Yes, I am in Cordillera, but not in Baguio City. Pretty close, though
Are you in La Trinidad? So you know, my plan is to go through all the provincial capitals of Cordillera, from most populated to least. This all based on Wikipedia...
Nope. That will take a while, so I'll throw out a clue - this is one of the more well-known towns. It's a recently "discovered" tourist spot - just visited earlier this year, in fact.
Unfortunately the only other tourist spot in Cordillera that I know of are the rice terraces of Banaue, and as far as I understand that is not a city... So I´m still quite lost.
Soo... are you in Bangued?
I am not there, either.
The town I'm in has only recently become a tourist destination. It's commonly described as a more pristine version of Baguio.
Are you in Benguet province?
The list of tourist destinations that I get doesn´t give me anything obvious. It´s hard, because living in North America we know absolutely nothing of any of these places. For example, you say that it is a more pristine version of Baguio. Isn´t Baguio a city? Pristine is perhaps not a word that I would associate with a city...
Nope, not in Benguet province.
Baguio is a city, and I suppose the "pristine" part is a matter of perspective. This place I'm thinking of has been compared to what Baguio used to be like 50, 100 years ago.
Hmm, let me think of a clue that is more helpful, yet not too obvious...
One of the draws of this town is its interesting burial practices.
Are you in Bontoc, Mountain Province?
Right province, wrong town. The town is small, and about 4 hours away from Bontoc.
Another clue: besides the burial practices, this town also has:
a) pottery
b) small rice terraces
c) waterfalls
d) a viewpoint with a beautiful view of sunrises
there is one more tourist attraction, but if I reveal that, anyone could guess it with a quick Google search.
Nope as well. Keep trying though, I'm sure you'll get it in the next few tries.
Correct!
Sagada is a small town located in the Mountain Province. Its tourism industry has grown rapidly in recent years, and it is famed for its hanging coffins, extensive cave network and waterfalls.
Blessed with a cool climate, it also boasts some small rice terraces and a magnificent sunrise view.
On to you, doctor!
Ok, Doc, are you north of the equator?
Phew, that was hard!
OK, I´m gone now. I´m north of the equator, and not in the Americas. I am not a tree sloth, although I sometimes feel like one.
Are you in the Middle East?
Depends on the definition of Middle East. Certainly in that general part of the world.
Are you in a country that ends in -stan?
And just where are CMK and Rocky? Ain't the same without them to kick around...
Here I are! I expect it will be till at least tomorrow evening before we hear from Chaim.

As for where Doc is, are you in a country with a Mediterranean coast?
Not in Egypt nor in any of the -stans. The country does have a Mediterranean coast.
Is this country considered part of Asia?
Hard to answer, that one. It sometimes is, and sometimes isn´t considered part of Asia.
I'll take a stab: Are you in Nicosia, Cyprus?
I already asked that, Eryk - he is not in Egypt.
I am indeed in Nicosia. Your turn, Rocky.

I guess it was too hard - thanks for keeping on guessing, I was worried I'd stalled the game!
I'll admit that knowledge of the geography of the Phillipines is fairly limited--and I try not to look at a map if I can help it.
Okay, gang, where the heck am I?
Well, Sagada is fairly obscure
On the flip side, I've had to look at maps for most of this game too.
Are you in the Americas?
Are you in a capital city? (including the capitals of the various United States states)
Originally posted by Invisible Brainiac:

So was I, to be frank. That´s why I kept guessing...
Anyway, Rocky, are you in a country with a name that finishes with an A?
I am in the Americas, in a country ending in "A". I am not in a capital city.
I am in the United States of America (hence the "A" ending
).
I've been a bit missing due to the Jewish holidays - will be gone for a few days at the end of this week as well.
Are you east of the Mississippi River?
I am not east of the Mississippi River.

Are you in a city with a population of more than 50,000?
I am in a city with a population greater than 50,000. I am not in Texas.
Are you in a state that borders one or more of the Great Lakes?
This state does not border a Great Lake.
Does the state border the Mississippi River?
I am in a state bordering the Mississippi; therefore, I am not west of Texas.
I am not in Illinois nor anywhere in Tennessee, both of which lie entirely east of the Mississippi (other than the odd bend in the river). I am not in Missouri.
are you in Omaha, Nebraska?
are you in Council Bluffs, IOWA?
I was actually expecting this to drag on a while longer, Supes, but that's it. I'm in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

No, I am not in the Americas.
Are you north of the equator?
Are you north of the equator?
Looks like we have an echo in here!
Yes, I am north of the equator.
Are you on the continent of Asia, as opposed to an island?
That's right, I am on mainland Asia.
Are you in a country that is primary Muslim?
Are any part of the Himalayas in this country?
No, the country is not primarily Muslim.
The Himalayas are also not located there.
Are you east of Singapore?
Are you in a country that is also in Europe?
No, I am not east of Singapore. And I am not in a country that could be considered part of Europe.
So I am in mainland Asia, north of the Equator, not east of Singapore, and not in a country considered part of Europe.
The Himalayas do not extend into the country I am in. It it not predominantly Muslim.
Are you in a country that borders the Caspian Sea?

Nope, not in Korea either.
Are you in western China?
Oops. Himalayas. Let´s see...west of Singapore, no Himalayas, not European, not muslim...
Are you somewhere in Indochina? Burma has Himalayas, sort of. Thailand, maybe?
Good reasoning, Dr. One! And Chaim's right, I am somewhere in Cambodia
I'll go with the only Cambodian city I know. Are you in Phnom Penh?
Nope, I'm not in the capital, Phnom Penh.
Close, but not quite - Angkor Wat isn't a city or town, per se. I am very near the temple complex, though.
OK, then, are you in Angkor? That's the name of the town, right?
From what I understand, Angkor refers to the area of temple ruins.
Siem Reap is the city located near Angkor, and serves as the gateway to that area.
You got it, Doctor!
Nope. Not in Europe and not in the Americas.

I am almost afraid to ask this, but...
Are you in the Philippines?
Are you in the Philippines?

This will be much easier than the last Philippine town I picked, don't worry
No, I am south of Tanza.
I am not in Cebu, either.
No, I am not in Mindanao.
I am not on Luzon island itself, but the island I am on is often considered part of the Luzon island group. This island is sometimes considered part of the Visayas island group too.
To clarify, the Philippines is divided into three main areas: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Are you on Mindoro Island?
No, not on Mindoro Island. But you are getting closer geographically.
No, and you're getting further away geographically.
Are you west of Mindoro Island?
Nope as well.
Of the three guesses, Mindoro is the closest to my location. Marinduque is next, and Leyte is much farther away.
Yes, I am west of Mindoro island.
Recap:
I am in the Philippines, on an island that is usually considered part of the Luzon group, and sometimes considered part of the Visayas group. I am not on Luzon island itself. I am west of Mindoro island.
Are you on Palawan Island?
That I am, Chaim. I'm sure you'll be able to guess the city easily
Since this is a Legion message board, my instinct is to ask: Are you in Roxas?
I wish I were, Chaim, but Roxas City is in the province of Capiz, on Panay Island.
Hmm, there seems to be one on Palawan according to Google maps. Maybe there's more than one.
Are you in Puerto Princesa City?
Hmm, you're right! Now I feel
In any case, your guess of Puerto Princesa is right.
This city is home to the beautiful Underground River, a UNESCO World Heritage site and candidate for one of the new 7 Wonders of Nature.

I am not in Asia.
Are you on one of the Oceanic Islands?
Yes, I am on an island in Oceania.

Are you in Wallis and Futuna?
