Here's the cover for #17, which, to me, appears to have the appearance of a final issue. And not a Superboy in sight. Solicitation to follow as soon as we can get it.

The Legion of Super-Heroes in the 31st Century #17

A distress call from a stranded United Planets ship pits the Legion against a gang of Thanagarian pirates – and they’re not exactly carrying on Hawkman’s heroic legacy! The team will have to call in the big guns, but their best hope is 1,000 years away.

I hope this isn't the last issue. This series should be telling us the stories we never got to see in the Cartoon, especially the 3rd season.

ahh i don't think it's cancelled yet, torres was just talking in his blog's comments about how they're planning stuff to fit in some of what was going to be going on in the 3rd season of the show. the cover looks really cute though!

Solicitation text added. Which is a combination of the solicitation text originally released for issue #13 and #14. Will we finally get this story in August?

Now we get the Thanagarian pirates. I was looking for them in the latest issue, but they weren't there!

Then again, didn’t the comic-book store open early on weekends?
Bart dashed off in a hurry.
Within seconds he was back. Not that early, I guess.

3rd season? I still see Brainiac 5 as a robot....look at his arm and his eyes. Didn't he turn to a human being at the final episode?

We're not there yet. The comic hasn't even reached the second season yet.

This should rank somewhere in the best LSH covers ever.

Really like that cover to! This looks to me like the comic is now well into the second season since Karate Kid is in the group shot. I hope this comic lasts a good long while since it's membership has characters that don't get used at all in the regular titles.

I've been genuinely surprised by how good this series had been (and sadly unable to say the same thing about the Threeboot; win some lose some I suppose) and I really hope they aren't canceling it...

Just read the story.

So obviously this seems to catch up to a point in the TV show I haven't seen yet (which isn't hard as I've only seen the first 3 episodes), as Garth has a metal arm and goatee now. This must be second season, no?

yes, very second season!

strangely enough, this issue was ALSO drawn by sanford greene and ALSO contained space pirates! but i felt this was much more successful both art and story wise. i can't help but wondering what an adult legion book would be like in torres' hands. he seems to do very interesting things with his stories structurally and conceptually that add real flair to this "kids" book.

choice moments include querl and nura's exchange at the beginning, clark's cute peace-signing to lightning lad, clark being adorably protective of querl, and the double-meanings/foreshadowing (which may or may not connect to the send of the second season. might just be some in-comic foreshadowing, either way it was awesome).

the inking on sanford's art was also much more appropriate, though it seemed to break down in a couple places. the clean, bright, celshading was also much more appropriate to his artwork.

I Liked this issue and I hope they continue this series and use it to explore what would have been the cartoon's third season.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this issue. The biggest problem I had with it was the interaction at the beginning between Dream Girl and Brainiac 5. In the TV series, the two are working together and Brainiac 5 is taking advantage of the precognitive ability, not questioning it. I realize there's precedent in other Legion comic books for this behavior between the two where Brainiac 5 is uncomfortable with Dream Girl's powers, but I prefer the TV series take where Brainiac 5 has no trouble with the scientific basis for precognition. There's as much precedent for a scientific basis for telepathy as there is for precognition and no one in the 31st century seems to have any trouble believing in Saturn Girl's powers or the science behind it. Time is considered the 4th dimension in physics. Directions/dimensions include:
1st - left-right, 2nd - forward-back, 3rd - up-down, 4th - back in time (history)-forward in time. Just because most beings can only perceive 3 and 1/2 dimensions or 7 directions, doesn't mean that someone who has the capability of perceiving other dimensions beyond those is 'unscientific'. I did like the idea of the Thanagarians as pirates. Might explain a little why Brainiac 5/Brainiac went after that planet in the show. I did have trouble telling when this story was supposed to take place in the timeline though. Last couple of comic books seemed to be taking place after season 1. All of a sudden, Superman is back, so that might put this one in the middle of season 2 somewhere, but no sign of Kell and no mention of anything that went on in season 2. Also, the story really didn't end and appeared like it was going to be continued. Hope the loose ends get tied up in the next issue. The story line was enjoyable. Looking forward to reading future issues.

You bring up an interesting point...will Superman X (Kell-El) be appearing in the comic before it gets axed?
