I just received a notification from the NYT that Leonard Nimoy has passed away at the age of 83. He had just been hospitalized on the 19th of this month after a 911 call for chest pains.

From the NYT:

"Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut “Star Trek,” died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83.

His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease."

I'm in shock. I know he has been ill for quite a while but that wasn't a notice I was expecting to see today. He and the rest of the original cast for Star Trek were a major part of my life. The show premiered the same year I was born and we will both be 50 next year. This is definitely one of the saddest deaths outside of friends and family.

I was so shocked to hear the news. I still can't believe it's true. frown

He lived long and prospered, both in RL and fiction.

RIP

Very sad to see such a great person, let alone cultural icon, pass.

What a life, though. How could anyone ever tabulate all the people, kids and adults, who were inspired and entertained by him? A life to be celebrated for sure.

Gone, but living forever and prospering for sure. cheers

Sigh. I haven't said anything about this because everyone else was talking about. I figured anything I'd have to say would be redundant.

I'm surprised my dad is taking this so easily though. He grew up with the original series.

While not unexpected (I remember being shocked at how frail he seemed on Fringe a few years back), it's definitely a sad event.

RIP.

I've decided, beyond my watching of Mirror, Mirror and Space Seed (my two favorite ST:TOS episodes), I'm going to grab copies of the original Mission Impossible series. Nimoy appeared starting season four and MI was another of my favorites growing up.

I'm always happy to learn that someone else at LW is a fan of the original, accept no substitutes, MI.

I got into it in the 90s, when FX was the really awesome reruns channel. My favorite season is actually 3, but the two Nimoy seasons definitely had some episodes I liked a lot.

The original and always the best. smile I will admit, though, that the Limp Bizkit "Take a Look Around" from the first MI movie that mixed the theme is one of my favorite angry songs to crank (which I have a few times today). The original theme is the best instrumental TV theme song, in my opinion.

Cheers Nostalgia! Mirror, Mirror is my favorite Trek episode of any series and started my lifelong fascination with alternate universe stories in just about any medium. Evil Spock for the win!

I'd forgotten about his appearance of Get Smart. Thanks for the fun trip down memory lane, EDE.

Eryk reminded me of the amount of treasures you can actually find on YouTube. I had this LP as a kid along with Shatner's.

Ah, the Biblo Baggins song. You would never think that Mr Spock would have such a nice voice. nod

From one of my favorite of the Nimoy MI episodes, "Butterfly":
