Lash counted this among his favorite covers. Music + comic books = how apropos for MLLASH.
Here are 5 songs for our Lash, and for us.
1. THE RIGHT THING by Simply Red
I barely know this one, so why? Because Lash picked it himself. Yes, on a certain thread a few years ago, Lash told us he wanted this played in his memory and dedicated to the LMB. When the song came up in discussion earlier this year, I reminded him about this. He had totally forgotten the thread! (He wasn't sick when he wrote the post. Just drunk!)
So here it is. Sexily so.
2. I'M NOT PERFECT (BUT I'M PERFECT FOR YOU) by Grace Jones
In the pre-iTunes and YouTube days, I burned a CD with this for Lash at his request. I wasn't familiar with the song, but I took to it right away. Right on time.
3. XANADU by Olivia Newton-John 4. DRIFT AWAY by Dobie Gray
Do these need any explanation? Bonus: #3 reminds me of a certain ONJ-athon we had a few Januarys ago.
A million lights are dancing and there you are, a shooting star. An everlasting world and you're here with me, eternally.
Give me the beat, boys, and free my soul, I wanna get lost in your rock and roll
5. ROCK & ROLL GIRLS by John Fogerty
A wild card for sure -- but I'm sure.
There is a place sweet as you will ever know, in music and love and things you never tell.
If not for Lash I'd have never listened to Lucinda Williams, the Pointer Sisters and who knows how many others.
Here is one of the most prolific, recurring songs from his karaoke days. When he posted about his he did all the Elvis moves and everything, I could never not hear it and picture that.
I've been listening to this a lot in the past few days. I don't know Lash's opinion of this song, but let's review: good old Memphis soul that's a li'l bit naughty. Mmm hmmm.
Lash and I both loved Morrissey. He told me that when he finally got to see him live a couple years or so ago, there were two songs he was really hoping Moz would do. Moz didn't do either of them. These were the songs, both gems:
Very nice, Teeds! A modern update of the T. Rex sound.
It reminded me of another Moz song. This one is as much of a loving T. Rex homage. I chose this live clip instead of the music video because Lash adored Moz's original backing band (they were awfully cute), and they get more face time here:
Last year, Lash and I did some mutual binge-watching of Mad Men. We made it to the middle of season 2 in just 2 or 3 sittings. I'd seen it all and he hadn't, so I liked hearing his fresh reactions to characters and events.
I was also looking forward to what he'd have to say about the music as it became more recognizable (1962, not so much). Megan (who had yet to appear) singing Zou Bisou Bisou. Pete, the joint, a yellow miniskirt, and Piece of My Heart. Sally turning and looking at her father in front of an old house in Hershey, Pennsylvania to Both Sides Now. Rollerskating to Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo! Not to mention the last minute of the last episode.
*ding* (smile) THE SONG. No, not the last episode one. Peggy got there two seasons earlier. And since we've been getting kink-y with Lash...here ya go, tot.
