What is the highest number of active Legionnaires we have ever reached?
To clarify, I'm not talking about which story has the most Legionnaires on duty... that would either be the Great Darkness Saga or the Legion of Three Worlds I guess. No I'm talking about how many are considered the core group at that moment.
We've gone beyond the traditional "25 members is the maximum" many times, but I'm curious if we can identify the moment when we reached the maximum.
I'm pretty sure we've never gone beyond 26 for an extended period of time, but I could be wrong on that.
I think the Bendisboot blew everything out of the water...
Superboy Cos Garth Imra Lu Tinya Gim Cham Invisible Kid (I assume only Jacques was there) Brainy Thom Jo Vi Dirk Ayla Jan Chuck Tenzil Mon Nura Jeckie Val Ferro Tasmia Brin Wildfire Dawnstar Blok Mysa Computo Lantern X Ray Girl Monster Boy Dr. Fate
Dang. I thought this was going to announce that FB finally bit it and hordes of prodigal posters were switching on their rings and returning to the LMB.
Surprised if the actual comic hasn't yet spawned some counterpart of Gyrich from the late 1970s or early 1980s *Avengers* who'll show up and forcibly whittle down the team via Presidential edict.
Hey, Kids! My "Cranky and Kitschy" collage art is now viewable on ipernity! Drop by and tell me that I sent you. *updated often!*

IIRC, he ended up suggesting that there were both an Invisible Kid *and* an Invisible Gentleman, and the latter, again, IIRC, was Jacques. (I'm not sure we ever saw the other, only heard their voice, so Invisible Kid could have been a red-skinned alien girl, for all I know...)

Brande shows up, "Guys, seriously, I'm only the richest man on the planet. I can't afford more than 25 of you, the superhero insurance premiums are killing my quarterly returns!"

Nope, in the initial Millennium issue, the Invisible Kid introduces himself as Lyle, but if you look at the Millennium trade, it's been changed to Jacques. Bendis seems to have changed his mind somewhere along the line. It also makes this exchange make zero sense, because Jac has a rant about how he hates the name Invisible Kid when he's finally properly introduced.
Funnily enough, none of the wrong name tags, like identifying White Witch as Mysa Nal of Naltor or Mon-El as Lar Gand of Daxam were fixed in the trade.
Good pickup Supragirl. I am amazed that they changed the TPB that way.
As for the name tags, I would guess that either not as much fuss had been made about them in social media so Bendis/DC didn't notice, or perhaps more likely it is the difference between text/lettering and artwork. It is one thing to change the text inside a word bubble, not too hard, but the name tags were part of the artwork and changing those would require more significant workload I imagine.
As for your original question it made me curious to track Legion membership over time, something I may do one day.
In the meantime a great resource for Legion membership and tenure is Cosmic Teams. The following page lists all Legion memberships in any version and has links to pages for each version separately. https://www.cosmicteams.com/legion/members-all.html
