Now we know a little more, does anyone have any guesses as to this?

I was also wondering about this but can't say that I see the connection other than that the Legionnaires are a slight bit older. Does anyone see something I'm missing?

Well I haven't even read the xover special yet, but Gail's arc dealt with a group of villains who took anachronistic names (those of 21st c. super-heroes) and opposed the perfect utopian society of the 31st c.
It seems that Waid's Legion will take anachronistic names (boy-girl-lad-lass-kid) and seek to shake things up in the perfect utopian society of the 31st c.
How they'll do it, of course, differs. Anyone agree? Disagree?

I've thought about that angle, but I'd be somewhat disappointed if there wasn't more than just the thematic overlap.
I've been considering how much we could make of my (somewhat joking) suggestion that Gail's arc was still in the future of the postboot team, but the presence of Superboy in her story sort of throws that off.

Waid has already confirmed that the Persuader will appear in the new series. Other, less obvious thematic connections in addition to those already mentioned:
-- The FNBR Legionnaires recalled the classic Levitz characters. Waid stated in his last interview that the characters' personalities will be based, for the most part, on the Levitz characterizations.
-- Several postboot recruits, i.e., Sensor, Kinetix, XS and Gates, were missing from FNBR. Sensor, it seems, has been replaced by Projectra and Waid has no plans for Kinetix. The status of XS and Gates remains undetermined.
-- Ferro was/is conspicuously absent from FNBR and Wildfire was forced to sit out the action. I suspect these two characters won't show up any time soon, especially Wildfire, now that Sun Boy is doing his shtick.
-- Live Wire appeared in a version of the Cockrum outfit, foreshadowing that character's transition to L-Lad and the end of his convergence with Element Lad. His sister Spark, now Light Lass, never used her lightning powers in FNBR but was seen speeding about as if she were defying gravity.
-- The temporary failure of Brainy's implants, and the negative effect on his emotions and personality, may somehow foreshadow reimagined, Vril-Doxian Brainy.
I wouldn't discount future appearances of Lialla, the Organ Thief or the Kharadian bug people, but I wouldn't hold my breath either. Imo, Infectious Lass and Nightwind were just fun cameos, nothing more. The way I see it, FNBR was set in an alternate timestream, sort of a thematic transition between the DnAverse and the WaKverse. It seems clear now it wasn't the future of the DnA team.

Not if Brainy picked him up while he went timestream-hopping looking for Shikari, who was also in the arc! There's a fan-boy solution to everything. I'm also interested to see how much these two arcs connect, because outside of the anachronistic stand-point and use of some of the same characters, I really don't see any big connection at all like I was expecting.

I really don't think Gails and Waids takes are connected at all. I think it was just more of the double talk to cover up the fact that they were rebboting the Legion again. I think they wanted to keep it quite until Gails arc was over.

I thought it was linked through thematic issues as well. Not just what Cats mentions but also that, IIRC, Waid said we wouldn't have an epic adventure in the new book without seeing how it impacted the characters and others around them. And we certainly got that in Gail's arc.

Only thematically in my eyes.
It’s a bunch of kids having super-heroic adventures in the far future. It should be fun and bright and high-spirited. - Mark Waid
