Okay, so we've had three issues of the new Legion title, and one of the major things which seems to be impeding my enjoyment of the series is the coloring. I just am left with a bland, dull feeling, and am underwhelmed by the colors. The advance preview with Gym straddling the macrobot had terrific colors, but the rest of the pages of all three issues have left me dissatisfied. I wonder if they are purposefully muting the colors for some artistic concept beyond me, or whether it's juts me. Is it just me? Is anyone else unhappy with the coloring so far?

Nope ,you're NOT alone ! I've been reading LOSH's for a very long time and this has got to be the least attractive view of the 31st century I've seen.
Hate to critic another artist especially if there is a conceptual reason but the colors are just plain boring[imho]....

Hey, LL,

I think the coloring varies from scene to scene more than I am used to in a comic. Perhaps because many comic stories are either all dark (e.g., Batman) or all bright and primary (e.g., Superman). However, they do seem to be using more extreme color variation to "heighten" the mood of the scene.

I am intrigued, but also annoyed, by how dark and foreboding the Cosmic Boy/Brainiac 5 scenes in HQ appear. Is the coloring meant to ram home the fact that these two are locked in some twilight struggle for control? That their schemes and plots occur in the shadows? That, contrary to all our expectations, Legion HQ is a run-down, poorly lit, depressing place to be?

...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

The think the cover colors are fantastic. I liked the colors in the preview that appeared in the Legion/TT special. I really liked the colors in issue #1. The colors in #2 I liked a little less. I didnt like the colors in issue #3 at all. IMO the colors have become too drab, dingy and muddy looking.

I suppose it's better than the mid-to-late part of the Giffbaum run, when Tom McCraw's colors were BY A WIDE MARGIN the ONLY attractive thing about the art. (But, that's just me...)

??? I know not of any significant length of bad art on TMK.

I like the colors. Subtle in most cases, and saves its oomph for when it counts. Reminds me of European GNs.

I like 'em too. They're muted to photorealistic levels--except when something unrealistic happens like an energy blast, then they brighten right up. Reminds me of Planetary.

The dark scenes in Brainy's lab are a little repetitive, but it is just one location. The rest of the HQ seems perfectly bright and cheery (except Triplicate Girl's room, but hey, she's got the lights off!)

I've been noticing this in the few DC titles I read these days. The colouring feels...dull, I guess is the best word I can find.

I think it's more a printing issue than actually the colours themselves. But what do I know? wink

Photo-realistic. Hm. I guess I'm not as much of a fan of that approach... I would rather see the costumes leap off the page rather than blend into the drab background. I do especially enjoy the power-glow effects of some of the outfits, such as Dirk's and Garth's. But still... I wish the colors caught my eyes more.

I remember not liking the art during the "Khund "War" (who drew that?)

Anyways ... There are a few scenes that come across as "drab" to me, but other than that I generally like the more muted tones of the book.

Brandon Peterson drew that, iirc. I liked it. But Pro and I differ. I thought the TMK era was blessed with great art. Giffen's "big-lips" era, Jason Pearson. Even the fill-ins... Dusty Abell, Craig Brasfield, Peterson.

As for the current colors... they aren't a problem for me. But if they are bothering others perhaps some variation is in order.

It's worked well for some things - the war sequences in #1 for example.

At first, I thought that if you were going to portray a society considered a utopia by many, that the colors would be brighter to reflect that. But the scene with the couple in their enviromental suits in #3 kind of puts paid to that notion and shows what the creative team is aiming at. So the colors fit that.

But if the Legion are going to oppose that sterile utopia, then brighter, more vibrant colors for the team would certainly help make the point.

Either way, the colors aren't a dealbreaker for me either.
