Very funny. For the record, Levitz ruined the two of them during his second run on LSH. While he may have increased the overall popularity of the Legion, he busted many of their characters, most notably Imra, Brin, Shaddy, Cham, and Polar Boy.

While he may have increased the overall popularity of the Legion, he busted many of their characters ... AMEN, Beyonder! I have a pretty long list of characters that Levitz ruined or severely compromised for me (starting with Sun Boy), but maybe this isn't the best time or place for my rantings. Back on topic: I really look forward to this issue. If LSH #13 and #14 stay on schedule, January looks to be Legion bonanza month!

Man, now this is my idea of the legion. You wanna know the giveaway to me that this is my era? Collasal boy's boots. Yup, you heard me. That was the kind of art style that reminds me most of the late Cockrum stories, the grell run, the (sadly) few sherman issues. The shading that gives detail without be a bunch of crosshatching lines that look scratchy.
Good, clean, story-totin' art.
Someone once talked about Grell not understanding anatomy from his early work. Figures tended to be lean and tall. And i had no problem with that.
The black on UB's costume had no highlights, which made it pop against the other colors in a scene instead of just looking like dead space...
I love Barry's work. He does some great stuff, and has for years. His work is clean and neat... but this type of stuff satisfies the soul, ya know...
Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!
Something pithy!

I just got my issue of BI #14. Totally cool...
The cover looks EVEN BETTER in print. Awesome. The cover story featuring an interview with Dave Cockrum and Mike Grell was worth the purchase price alone. It included some nice images of artwork from each artist, some of which I had not seen before. While I learned a great deal in the interview about 'behind the scenes' Legion stuff during Mr. Cockrum's run, I was really impressed with how Mr. Grell came across. Mike Grell impresses me as a class act and genuine good guy as well as a super talented artist.
I would love to see both of these guys do an anniversary or fill-in issue in the near future.

Good article, wish it could have been longer! There were some great tidbits. My favourite: the Brainy-Supergirl robot final scene was based on La Pietà and the editor freaked - but let it go through. It really is obvious now that Grell pointed it out. I wonder how many other fine art tribute panels there are in the book? EDE pointed out The Last Supper, with Supervillains .
