Wow, that certainly got my attention as well! Great kick off to what should be a great story (fingers crossed). I can't wait to find out what happened to Triplicate Girl!!!

The dialogue is a bit better than before - most of them still have the same personality, but at least the dialogue isn't that interchangeable anymore. It was a good intro to the team.

Lu's horror was palpable...

least Gold Lantern gets a bit more fleshed out, though we didn't really learn much new yet

I like the logic for "why Monster Boy" (and also M. Boy asking why him in the first place)

still don't get how they defeated the Garfu though, it's clear that they did (and it's encased in a nice shiny bubble) but...

This garfu looks an awful lot like Solaris...I wonder if that's significant?

It looks like this encounter exists as just a backdrop to move the story along so I don't expect to see it blow for blow, but yeah it would have been nice to at least be able to figure out how they took it down...in other news, I still love some of these looks! Gold Lantern, X-Ray Girl, Triplicate Girl and White Witch all look awesome, and this is probably visually the most I've liked Cham whenever they've tried diverging from his classic look.

I will probably pick this up to have a look at least, from what I've seen so far it seems fun!

Well, we only have three pages, but I did like Gold Lantern's narration.

Does whatever's happening to Lu portend her fate in Future State?

The Garfu was just a McGuffin to bring in the Legion, so its not that important, but yeah, I had a problem following the action there, although I assumed that its Gold Lantern's energy that's creating that bubble.

And that team dialog.... hmmm...

re dialog, I just realized one more reason it's better - they're actually letting each other finish their sentences now smile that helps a lot!

THAT's definitely a good thing! LOL

Also no Vi at all. Again, maybe she's on page 4, or they're doing something with her like in the threeboot...

+1!

At least we know she isn't reduced to Duo Damsel at the outset of the story, so we'll have to see about the rest of the six issues. smile

I can't wait for this!!!

BTW, I note the release date is 01/11/2022 ...am just out of it, or since when did things get released on Tuesday?

Is that just the digital release? or will it actually possibly be in my comic store on Tuesday?

DC changed to Tuesday releases about a year ago after they announced they were leaving Diamond Distributers.

But in fact, retailers often get their books a day or several days earlier than that, and are apparantly allowed to sell them when they get them because they no longer have Diamond threatening them since DC doesn't mind.

I buy digital-only for several reasons, so I can't personally confirm.

Released 1/11/2022
DC Comics, Color
20 Pages

The Gold Lantern Saga: Part 1
Brian Michael Bendis - Writer
Scott Godlewski - Art
Ryan Cody - Colors
Dave Sharpe - Letters
Chris Rosa - Associate Editor
Mike Cotton and Paul Kaminski - Editors

Synopsis

An anomaly happens in both the 21st and 31st centuries, bringing the Legion of Super Heroes back to the 21st century, and in contact with the Justice League.

Commentary (spoiler free)

This is a pure setup issue, so the above Synopsis is literally the main thing that happens in the story, with a couple exceptions that I'll get to in the spoilers. If you love Bendis dialogue, you're gonna love this issue. If you don't, you won't. I'm unfamiliar with the current Justice League, but they talk a lot like the Legion does.

Godlewski and Cody do a good job with the art from a character rendering perspective, however the intro scene is a bit hard to follow, as we've noted in the preview thread.

I wish they would have gone into more detail as to WHY the Legion had to go back in time - I think I understand why, but it's not clearly stated.

The bookending of the temporal events in both centuries was a good idea, but I don't know if it was needed a third time.

That said I do want to see what happens next and what the teams are going to be set up to do. Given that there is a 'vs' in the title, I'm going to assume that the two teams will be artificially positioned against each other in some way, but we'll see.

One nitpick - and this is in the preview - whomever the Gold Lantern is talking with in the opening monologue says "could you see an entire lantern core (sic) reinstated?" I guess this is an error, but surprised that it crept through with three editors on the book.

(Spoilers below, so open at your own risk!)

Ok, so the big reveal is that Lu Magenta was aged up rapidly when she was stolen to go into the past, therefore I'm assuming that's why the Legion had to go into the Past vs Jon bringing Magenta back to the 31st. Its an interesting idea, and wonder if this is where they're going with a potential Duo Damsel resolution. Props to Godlewski here, as I could immediately tell that she looked different in the 21st.

Other than that, the other big events are a meeting with Brande where Brainy admits that they have no idea what's going on, but a "Daxamian" UP rep gives them carte blanche to solve the crisis.

Old Lu quickly realizes where/when she is when she reappears, but it was a good touch that Batman immediately summons Jon when Lu Magenta mentions him.

Back at the 31st, the dialog between the rest of Lu was interesting - what happens when a Carggite loses a body? And then when they go to the 21st (after Jon shows up) also brought an interesting question to light - what happens when a third of the person is altered in this way, and how does that affect merging of her bodies?

I guess that Imra dumped her feelings for Jon out the window, as they don't seem as close as before. But have we defined that Jon can time travel without a time bubble? Honestly asking here.

The lovefest when the two teams come together wasn't as cringey as I thought it would be - very reminiscent of other times this has happened.

Dammit - still no dialogue for Vi. If this is some kind of inside joke from Bendis, it ain't funny.

The whole dialogue cycle of "did we do something wrong.... what is haaaaaapening" didn't need to be repeated a third time.

And both teams get transported away in Kirby crackle leaving Gold Lantern by his lonesome.

Grade - B-. Innocuous setup story, good art, not great dialogue, but it makes me want to see what happens next.

Thanks for an excellent, scrupulously thorough review, Gaseous Lad.

I reserved a copy a while ago, but I've been on the fence since then. I'm torn between wanting to give Bendis one last fair chance and just facing up to the fact that I'm getting older and, as the late, great bluesman BB King once sang, the thrill is gone.

After reading your review, I've decided to just not buy it. *Maybe* I'll read the trade, if and when my public library system gets a copy, but I'm not spending good money on something so iffy.

"My" Legion is gone from the DCU canon, I just have to accept that. Bendis's iteration obviously has plenty of support from DC, and a loyal following, and I wish them well. But count me out.

The sum total of all six parts may be great, but we'll see how/where it goes. I was honestly surprised that the issue flew by as fast as it did, but it was only 20 pages, which is kind of another strange bit now that I think of it. Hell, Far Sector had 25 page issues for a 12 issue limited series! 20 pages seems to be way too short.

I read this issue last week when the DC books arrived at my store.

I warned Ann and Supragirl that it was exactly what we all figured it would be and I keep telling myself "At least we have Travis and Rich's Polar Boy story."

I love how Bendis's handling of the Ranzz twins continues to be tone deaf and basic.

Well one interesting thing that was dropped was that Garth apparently
has a PhD
, which I thought was kind of interesting. Irrelevant to the plot, but interesting nonetheless.

As I read this very critically, so far I can say that the plot of this issue had some interesting elements around Triplicate Girl. Where this goes sideways for me is specifically a) the dialogue and b) the large amounts of folks in the background having their own conversations.

Y'know maybe if Bendis made Gold Lantern ACTUALLY interesting instead of SAYING he was interesting in the first twelve issues this book would feel like less of a desperate attempt to boost his new character.

Someone put it best that his entire run at DC's been like giving a famous actor a role they're not suited for just because they're famous.

And Naomi is his also, right? I wondered about her participation on the JL side. Seemed similar.
