Sheekareedree-Ahm Six - within the UP though not a member world. The indigenous people are small humanoids with butterfly-like wing that are at a lo-tech stage of development and are reported to not be welcoming to those from other worlds. Science Police reports indicate there is an incursion happening currently and the Legion have been alerted; a team has responded.
Lightning Lass - Deputy Team Leader, Ayla Ranzz of Winath - electrical generation and manipulation Backlash - Mrruaw MNau of Simballi - enhanced strength, speed, senses, absorbs kinetic energy to boost own size and mass Dragonmage - Xao Jin of Earth - dragon magics Kinetix - Zoe Saugin of Aleph - telekinetic animation MWindaji - Gahaji of Kiringyaga - super tracker, carries the Ruby of Life allowing tactile transformative magic
Taikonglong - previously 'Szenlong' - the first Spirit-Dragon... of Space!
Science Police meta-squad seconded to Legion World First Base: Captain Heavyweight - Senior Team liaison, Science Police Captain Tuk Shir of Daxam, Senior Team liaison - incredible strength, speed, stamina, senses, laser vision, space flight, invulnerability
Current interns from the Home Base training program included on missions in a probationary status: Haze - Tkemwa Autmi-Hu of Ungara - strength, durability, induce confusion and senselessness Polestar - Nykko Rine of Braal, magnokinesis
..............................
<Team!> Xao's message got their attention, <we have a bigger problem than just protecting this colony, they're digging up a highly dangerous elemental ore and we can't let them get it off planet. Also, we think this isn't the only site where they're drilling>
<okay> Ayla responded, <Captain Shir, get up into the atmosphere and check if there's more, Polestar and I'll deal with the ships up above us. Xao, anything else you got to tell us? If not, we need your help up here as well>
<ah... um, there's these machines they're drilling into the ground, like they're pretty big and have these mechanical insects in them that are probably searching for elements>
<we've seen them and smashed a couple, but let's take the transport vessels out first, get their cargo off them so they don't get any off planet and then we can shut down the operation>
..................................
Captain Tuk Shir enjoyed being able to cut lose.
The Daxamite flew into the craft he had been meticulously tearing apart. Using his x-ray vision he quickly located the loading bay were several dozen three legged beings scurried around robots that were unloading raw matter that had been streamed up on a grav-lift.
<Kinetix, get ready, I'm away to drop this ship> and with that, the Daxamite's laser vision tore through the craft, severing the section of the attacking ship that housed the docking bay.
There was an enormous screech as part of the craft tore off, sending it flying off. As the section with the mined material spun into the air Captain Shir used his great strength to grab told of the edge of the red hot tear and fling the craft out of the atmosphere. He flew after it to ensure it left the planets gravity well and didn't tumble back down.
As he reached the very edge of the planet's atmosphere and was certain that the damaged craft was in no condition to return, he turned back towards the green and blue world below. Using his expansive senses, Tuk Shir noted sixteen other sites where the strange three legged aliens were stealing resources. In a flash of speed he set out to dissuade them from completing their task.
He planned on dissuading them rather strongly!
..................................
Kinetix hadn't heard the approaching Sheekaree warriors as they flew up towards her.
Her focus was entirely on the section of the large craft that Tuk Shir had just blasted off the craft directly above her. It had started to fall and Zoe was certain it would make a hell of a mess if it were to land on the natives below. Zoe didn't want to admit it but she was scared: the section that Captain Heavyweight had severed from the larger craft was still several hundred tons of material and she doubted if she could alter than much of it...
Reaching out, she caused the material around the edges to flatten and extend into a twenty metre-long frill, and with a push from her telekinesis she sent it spinning, hoping to at least move it away from the already damaged colony several hundred metres underneath her. Zoe thought it looked something like a flying saucer with its bulbous midsection. She was aware that there were smaller lumps of flaming debris falling though she didn't had either the concentration or power to focus on them, and out of the corner of her eye she caught a white shape tearing past her to deflect a lump of this falling material that was spiralling towards her.
<You've made some friends, Zoe> The intern from Braal, Polestar sent across the telepathic matrix as she flew up beside the Legionnaire.
Kinetix glanced over her shoulder and saw several of the pale winged natives flying at the falling smaller pieces of debris and ensnaring them with nets or smashing them with spears. For a second she was surprised by how beautiful they were, with alabaster white skin and long slim features and massive butterfly like wings with dark marking along their edges.
<let me help you with that...> Polestar reached out with her magnokinesis and sent the reshaped section of the craft Tuk Shir had cut from the mothership and sent it flying towards one of the other crafts. The young Braalian took off after the reshaped debris, guiding it towards her target.
Kinetix was simply too tired after her last use of her power to muster the will to chase after the intern, and instead, she took a few seconds to gather her breath and see what was happening around her. In the distance, she could see Lightning Lass was blasting at the third of the alien crafts, aiming for their propulsion units to cripple them and leave them stranded on this world. Around Ayla were specks of glowing green streaks - Dragonmage had arrived and was supporting their mission leader.
As she hovered surveying the scene, one of the white skinned natives flew up in front of Zoe. It tilted its head and started to chitter in a high-pitched voice. Kinetix' flight ring had access to a basic translation matrix but was unable to suggest an interpretation. The Legionnaire smiled and shrugged.
"I'm sorry honey, but I didn't catch that and I gotta go to my team. Thanks for helping me out though." She gave a quick salute and flew off after Polestar.
Behind her, the winged nativehissed and shook their spear in her direction.
...............................................
The air for over twenty metres around MWindaji had been cleared of the greasy smoke.
The Ruby of Life glowed in his hand as he willed it to transmute the air around him. He had been avoiding the drones and trying to help the natives, though as soon as he had gotten close to them they had hissed and chittered to him, shaking weapons in his direction before flying away.
Haze had smashed one of the remaining drones into twisted wreckage not far away, so Gahaji flew over to join the intern.
"Hey, how're you getting on? The locals don't seem to appreciate our help, eh? I've never been hissed at before today..."
"They ran away from me." The intern replied as he looked around for more invasive technology to destroy.
Above them they could hear and almost constant tattoo of booms and crashes as their fellow Legionnaires stopped the crafts in the atmosphere from leaving this world with the dangerous minerals they had stripped from the ground.
Both MWindaji and Haze knew there was still work to do down at ground level, so levitated and looked around for Resource Raiders to catch or their technology to destroy.
"You're the tracker. Where we going next?" Haze asked the Legionnaire.
MWindaji felt a momentary flash of embarrassment as for a second, he hadn't thought to use his innate ability.
"Yes... ah... this way." Gahaji flew off to the right where he could sense the last of their prey.

Legion World Home Base - the Academy:
Former Legionnaires: Cosmic Boy – Rokk Krinn of Braal - manipulation of magnetic fields Night Girl - Lydda Jath of Kathoon - incredible strength and durability out of direct sunlight
Science Police training staff: Tues El - Science Police Officer Vae Loct of Daxam - incredible strength, speed, stamina, senses, laser vision, space flight, invulnerability
The warp control room on Home Base was behind an ornately carved set of large double doors.
It was 2:47am standard time when the doors slammed shut and a screeching noise was heard from within. Gear was usually aware of any strange activity on Home Base as the Linsnarian's nannites had been liberally spread around the planetoid. The exception was the control room, where Henry's original mushroom shaped mainframe console was housed. As there were no tutors or students present in that room, Gear, who permanently monitored the Base, decided to call for help to investigate.
An alarm sounded, and Rokk Krinn and Lydda Jath were alerted. Within three minutes, the two former Legionnaires arrived. As they had flown along the corridor, a general alarm sounded for all the tutor's quarters, informing them of the situation and ensuring they were awake and ready if further actions were needed.
Just as the recently wed couple arrived, Vae Loct, the Daxamite tutor who was often called Tues El, arrived in a burst of hyper speed. Behind him flew one of the students, Science Police Cadet Ber Sind of Daxam. They had been practising laser vision drills in a lower gallery when his alarm rang.
"It'll be safer if I go first." He said confidently as he strode past Cosmic Boy.
"No. You will wait... use your x-ray vision and find out what's happening in there before we touch the door. And Lydda and I will go first. We have decades more experience than you." Rokk said in a level tone; the look he gave the Daxamite made it clear that there would be no argument.
"Ah..." The Science Police Officer's eyes glowed pale blue for a couple of seconds before he spoke again. "There is a spinning disc of red and violet... and Henry is stood beside it; he's not moving."
"Henry, report!" Lydda barked at her flight ring.
"He's not budged an inch." The student, Ber Sind, said a couple of seconds later. It was the first words she had spoken since arriving. Lydda thanked her, though her eyes remained focussed on the double doors before them.
Rokk reached out with his magnokinesis and pushed at the large metal door handles; the doors creaked and groaned, straining before they finally flew open.
Rokk and Lydda darted in, Vae Loct behind them.
The holo-man Henry turned to face them, his expression unreadable as he whispered, "Wait..."
Rokk scanned the red warp before them, but his flight ring database could give him no usable information.
"There's something coming through..." As Vae Loct said this, he positioned his invulnerable frame between the warp and his fellow tutors. As they watched, several dark forms stepped through, and with a sudden silence that was as deafening as the screech had been, the warp disappeared.
Element Lad, the Huntress with her hound Laipas, Karate Kid, Strobe, the intern Shadowsurfer, along with a tall, powerfully built woman with dark skin and electric white hair stood in the centre of the warp control room.
"You did it, Henry! You reached us in the other dimension." Jan Arrah said with a broad smile.
"Welcome home, you have been missed." The holo of Henry flickered but grinned as he welcomed them back.

Lightning Lass - Deputy Team Leader, Ayla Ranzz of Winath - electrical generation and manipulation Backlash - Mrruaw MNau of Simballi - enhanced strength, speed, senses, absorbs kinetic energy to boost own size and mass
Ayla took a deep breath.
They had immobilised the two crafts and wrapped incapacity cuffs around the wrists of every Resource Raider that they could find.
Captain Shir had reported that he had immobilised a fleet of crafts across the globe and was currently chasing after one that managed to leave the planets atmosphere. Ayla had no concerns for the Daxamite, she was more worried for the Resource Raiders...
Kinetix and Polestar were moving debris away from the colony, while Haze and MWindaji gathered the unconscious Raiders into a central area where Henry could warp them to the appropriate authorities.
Ayla decided to check on Backlash and Taikonglong.
She was not especially surprised when she found the Tigeram lounging in a pocket of sunshine on the warm ground next to one of the destroyed machines.
"Ayla, before you say anything, I'm waiting for those scurrying robots that the Raiders were pumping down their holes to find that toxic mineral. Taikonglong has flown down there..." he nodded towards one of the drilled holes, "and has been sending them up here for me to squash."
As he finished speaking, several of the six legged scurrying machines were violently ejected from the hole. Backlash pounced and swatted them to the ground where he jumped on them, smashing them into component parts on the hard ground.
Ayla had grown up on an expansive farm where they had several dozen cats that roamed the fields following their ancient instincts to keep their pests down. She knew how focussed they could become on the hunt and aw that same instinct in Mrruaw's behaviour. She smiled as she watched the great horned cat play.
Lightning Lass watched Backlash for ten seconds before she took to the air again.
One last check in with the team - MWindaji and Haze had arranged for Henry to warp the Resource Raiders to Takron-Galtos and transport their technology off world. Gear had asked that it be teleported close to Second Base where his nannites could repurpose it for the teams benefit.
After speaking to her team she estimated they would be gone within an hour. This thought made the Winathian hero smile again - they had put an end to this incursion, and as awful as it had been for the indigenous race they had stopped something far more awful from potentially happening.
today was a good day!
....................................
Outside Second Base, in the Far Southern Fringe Space between systems.
Dawnstar of Starhaven - Senior Team member - space flight, incredible speed, tracking Southern Lights of Starhaven - spaceflight, magic user
Southern Lights couldn't keep up with Dawnstar.
The tracker had tried to initiate a game of tag as she flew around the outside of Second Base with him, but the young mystic, as agile as he was, couldn't even get close to her. She had laughed and gently teased him as she darted just out of his reach.
He smiled as he asked if they were supposed to use their abilities when playing games. Dawnstar considered his question and told him that of course they should use their powers, that was the whole point.
Southern Lights smiled mischievously and blew her a kiss.
Dawnstar started to laugh, but within seconds his spell had taken effect - it was an adaptation of an enchantment that Glorith had taught him which slowed the recipients perception of time.
Dawnstars senses went far beyond the simple assessment of stimuli from her immediate environment, like a normal person. She had additional mutations that allowed her to feel far beyond the range of most, and with deeper clarity than the vast majority. The clash between her normal human senses and her mutant psionic awareness was huge - one told her that everything was slowing down while the other informed her that the very same universe was moving much faster... As a result, the simple spell that should have just slowed her down, threw her into a panicked state as it appeared to her that reality was being somehow being torn apart!
Dawnstar put her hands to her face and screamed as her senses twisted and warped and her awareness of the universe around her fractured. Her wings beat erratically and she almost collided with Southern Lights in her panicked attempt to escape. While her perception had been slowed, her instinctive automatic physical reactions to this threat had not, so with a swoop of her wings the tracker was gone in a blur of hyper-velocity.
Southern Lights was momentarily shocked and quickly recalled the spell, hoping that the tracker would be returned to her senses.
<Dawnstar, my love, where are you? Please, let me know you are okay. Dawnstar...?>
The winged mystic waited a few seconds for a response but none came. He knew then that something was terribly wrong and he would need help making it right.
................................
Otaki - Bina Nawoti of Earth - mind-sense Power Lass - Science Police Officer Nel Duwi of Daxam - incredible strength, speed, stamina, senses, laser vision, space flight, invulnerability
Bina Nawoti and Officer Nel Duwi were snuggled on a sofa watching a holo-documentary.
They had been relaxing in Nel's quarters on Second Base enjoying a peaceful evening to themselves when the alert came through their flight rings. A holo of Friction - currently on Monitor Duty - explained Southern Lights' request for help.
Nel changed into her battle armour while Bina quickly grabbed the spare uniform she had left in her girlfriends' quarters just in case issues like this arose when she was visiting her over on Second Base.
"I'm going to grab a shuttle, you go help Southern Lights. I'll be out there in a couple of minutes." Bina raced to the door. As she did, the Daxamite wrapped her arms around her psychic girlfriend and said "Let' me save you the time m'darlin'..." And flew Bina through Second Base to the docking bay at speed.
Even though she was left feeling a little dizzy by the experience, Bina was grateful for the speedy trip to their shuttles, and more so for the kiss Nel planted on her forehead before the Daxamite flew out into space to join their mystic teammate.
...........................
Southern Lights looked distraught.
The young mystic from Starhaven had cast an enchantment and a trail of small twinkling lights led away from their planetoid base out towards the inky blackness of space. Officer Duwi flew alongside the winged Legionnaire while Otaki travelled in a double-seater shuttle close behind. The psychic Legionnaire reached out with her prodigious mind-sense and quickly found her teammate.
<Dawny is really confused; I can feel her anxiety. I can try to calm her but don't think this is a psychic thing, it feels odd what she's experiencing, is it magic? ...are you able to help Southern Lights?>
<the spell has been rescinded, she should have returned to her senses>
<ah, Dawnstar has a unique perception of the universe... I'll try to calm her a little>
Even though Otaki's comment had not been an admonishment, Southern Lights felt himself blush as he realised that he should have taken into account his fellow Starhavenite's mutant abilities included an expanded awareness of her surroundings.
As they approached a small asteroid, the three Legionnaires could see their colleague. Dawnstar was floating in space, her hands waving in front of her face as if she were trying to swat at an invisible swarm.
Southern Lights flew in towards her, though before he could get too close Officer Duwi flew in front of him.
<let Bina try first> she sent to him, holding a hand out in front of his chest.
Bina Nawoti flew her shuttle closer to the tracker. She closed her eyes and let her mind sense expand outwards. As she reached Dawnstar's mind, Otaki visualised a feeling of relaxation and gently laid that over her colleague's mind.
<<the bond needs breaking>> the voice in Southern Lights' mind came from the consciousness of the pocket dimension that had taken to him on a mission many months before. The young mystic had almost forgotten about it.
<what do you mean? Which bond?>
<<the bond between you and your lover. Your emotions feed your magic, do they not? You both share deep feelings so the bond keeps the magic flowing>>
Southern Lights felt a cold chill run down his spine as the implications of what he had just heard became clear. His love for Dawnstar and hers for him meant the spell would keep affecting her... as long as they felt that depth of emotion Dawnstar was at risk.
............................
Dawnstar appeared to be calm so Otaki relaxed and flew her shuttle in closer to Southern Lights, while her Daxamite girlfriend flew to the winged trackers side.
Southern Lights explained his dilemma across the telepathic matrix to Otaki and Officer Duwi, being sure to exclude Dawnstar from the conversation.
As far as he could tell, unless Dawnstar or him stopped having such depth if feelings, the spell would linger and continue to distort her senses.
<So, what can we do?> Nel Duwi asked.
<I can only see one solution, and I'll need your help Bina.> Southern Lights turned to the lithe psychic, his expression full of anguish, <we have to make her forget she... her feelings for me. Once she no longer has those the spell will break and her senses will return to normal>
<I can't just turn on and off people's feelings!> Otaki exclaimed, her distaste at the idea was very clear.
<I have a spell that will do it, and once done she'll... but... once it is done I cannot turn it back. She will no longer feel her love for me. It is the only way I can discern that we have which can return Dawnstar's right mind to her. Please, Bina, soothe her while I call upon the Spirit to take these feelings away> and before she could argue he started to mouth words in a long dead language, his eyes squeezed closed as he concentrated on the spell.
Otaki was momentarily stunned by Southern Lights suggested solution, but as the spell was already being cast she had no time to come up with another plan.
Dawnstar's eyes rolled back and she moaned in pain as the enchantment re-wrote her emotions. Otaki was unprepared for how powerful the feelings it generated were so she cried out as she held onto Dawnstar's mind, helping to stabilise the process.
It was over in under thirty seconds and the usual stoic Southern Lights had tears pooling in his eyes as he finished. Otaki rubbed her forehead and blinked her eyes as she cleared her mind.
"You! You did this!"
Dawnstar flew to Southern Lights. The young mystic had tears on his cheeks that he quickly tried to wipe away.
"Yes, I did not know..."
"Do not ever mess with my mind again!" She stated bluntly over his apology. "You are from Starhaven and I expect you to act with propriety and respect in future."
With that, Dawnstar flew away at high speed.
There was little could be done to hide the heartbreak on Southern Lights' face as she vanished into the inky blackness of space.

Hey IB, many thanks again for your kind review above, it's greatly appreciated. Next up, the day after... Timber Wolf plays Tag, Amynta is a tour guide, and what is going on with Dawnstar? After that, we catch up with Friction and Booster as they face some uncomfortable questions, and how is Kid Flux coping in quarantine? And, of course we have a Try-Out and all the fun that that brings to look forward to close on the heels of those vignettes. Then things will get ...interesting, as the Immortal strikes! Yikes! Thanks again, more, more, more coming soon

Thanks IB, glad you enjoyed it. I decided to torture Dawnstar a bit more as she makes such a great martyr though their story is still far from finished. I'm tempted to post the next section tomorrow as I've about 6 or 7 sections ready to go, so expect more very soon Thanks again, hope all's going well at your end of the aether C

First Base, Mission Monitor Board control room
Friction - Janee Whittakka of Xanthu - manipulates the force of friction Solstin Wang of Earth - Booster - medical support - awareness and manipulation of physical properties of those around him
Friction and Booster found themselves on General Mission Monitor Board duty on First Base at the same time.
While Brainiac 5 had arranged for an AI to keep a general monitoring role to alert the team to any event they might need to get involved with, the Senior Team had decided that two members would be randomly assigned from all the teams to keep a more sapient view on alerts as they were raised.
Janee and Solstin had attended the Academy at roughly the same time, though they had never spent much time together.
While at the academy, she had heard that he was uptight and a teachers pet, so the young woman from Xanthu hadn't gone out of her way to make friends with him. Meanwhile, he had watched on as it appeared that she had involved herself in every drama going, while playing at being the good girl whenever a tutor or Legionnaire looked her way.
Needless to say, they were polite and professional whenever they were in a room together with absolutely no love lost between them. They were two hours into an eight hour shift with barely a word said between them and time was dragging its heels for both of them.
Other than Southern Lights requesting support to find Dawnstar, it had been a particularly quiet couple of hours.
"So..." Janee started to speak, more to break the silence than because she particularly wanted to talk to him, "are you and Old Father Time still hooking up. How's that going?" She gave a little laugh as she used the nickname that students had given Spoiler.
"Yeah... Great, thanks." Solstin didn't turn to face her, and his tone was flat.
"He's a solid guy, isn't he? Gosh, must be great to get a muscleman like him. Lots to grab hold of when he isn't off on a mission, I imagine." Even as she said it, Janee knew she had gone too far as she watched Solstin's jaw tighten.
"Says the girl boffing the student that can alter his dimensions... I'm sure you can have as much as you want to grab hold of whenever he's out of class and doesn't have too much homework." His cold tone made it clear that the conversation was over.
"Oi! I was just trying to make conversation. There's no need to get so defensive and spiky."
"Yeah? You're the one slinging these innuendos as if we're best friends... or even just friends."
...........................
There was silence between them for about a minute before Janee replied:
"That's actually... yeah, that's probably true, I suppose, but at least I'm trying to talk. You're so bloody rigid that you freak me out, Solstin. If I tried saying 'nice day' you wouldn't reply so I thought I'd try something fun."
"There's nothing 'fun' happening between Gord and me. We had a night together... one! But he... it didn't go any further. Okay? Now, you've got your story, happy?"
"Ah, shit, sorry... Genuinely, Solstin, I thought you two would be cute together. That's why I mentioned it. Seriously, I was happy for you. What happened, and, are you okay?""
"He.... It's like... When my powers first materialised, I was only thirteen, and there was this boy I had a crush on. He was really sporty and was tipped to go professional..."
"Oh, I know the type." Friction muttered, "let me guess, he was everyone's friend so long as they supported him?".
"Yeah, that's pretty much how it was." They shared a knowing look before he continued. "Anyway, he had an accident on a Lazer Ball court, and I was close by and rushed to him. As I touched him I boosted him. I didn't know what I was doing but word got around that I had magic hands that could help people and quickly it spread to the local Lazer Ball team. They weren't top league but they were professionals in the Second Division on Earth. They offered to pay me to help them recover after their games and of course I agreed... Not sure if you know, but I'm the third of nine children..."
"Whoah!"
"Yeah, after the last World War on Earth the Sino-Alliance lost so many people they offered tax break for large families and my folks are traditionalists. And being a large family, money was always tight so I jumped at the chance at getting paid. But the players were dogs and expected me to be on call whenever they needed a boost, and that led to some really unsavoury situations. If Rokk hadn't read about me on some Sports Stream and offered me a place at the Academy I'd probably still be stuck in that situation. I think Cosmic Boy probably saved me life. Anyway, what Gord said to me... it kinda threw me back into that headspace where I was only needed to boost others' gratification... I don't know why I expected anything different really. Naltorans, what can I say." He muttered.
"Yeah... Wow, you've had it tough, haven't you Solstin? Sorry to hear that. I think you deserve so much better than being treated like that... Naltorans, indeed! Them and Rimboran dancers, bloody hazards the lot of them." She stated.
"Things not going so well for you either? I'm sorry too. He seems like..." Solstin had turned around and could see her expression so pivoted from what he was going to say, and instead said what he truly thought from watching the students on Home Base, "he seems to enjoy the spotlight a bit too much for my taste, to be honest. He's an attention seeker, isn't he?"
"He really is! Oh, stars above, he lives for it... and it's exhausting! And not the fun sort of exhaustion either." She gave a small laugh as she finished.
"So you're not really having much fun either then?" Solstin asked.
"Not lately. Rubbish, isn't it?"
"What do you do when he's like that... Have you said anything to him?"
"Couple of times now I've said real clear I'd love some time just the two of us, y'know? He either doesn't get it or is too in love with performing to hear it... How about you? What exactly did Gord say to you?"
"He... he kinda said it's... like, he doesn't want to commit, but of course we can still have fun when he's free. Like, does he just expect me to hang about waiting for him? Ugh! I was so annoyed with him!"
"Tell him... say to him that you get a choice in all this, whatever it is, and he needs to respect that. I'll talk to Victa about his ...his selfishness, if you talk to Old Father Time about his aloofness. He was always a stand-offish git at the Academy, remember? Seems he hasn't changed all that much." Janee gave Solstin a sympathetic smile as she finished.
................................
There was a minute of comfortable silence between them before Solstin started laughing.
"What?" Janee asked.
"I just thought... we're not getting much but I gotta wondered how many Legionnaires have had 'fun' here on the monitor console?" He gave a nervous laugh as he mimed wiping something sticky off his hands.
"Well... I reckon back in the day Sun Boy must have. I reckon, going by his reputation you'd probably need to hose the place down after he'd been in here." Janee said, laughing.
"Oh, for sure, and definitely Nura and Thom."
"Absolutely! You know what they say: grass is green, sky is blue, Nura and Thom just love to... and what about Rokk and Lydda?"
"No way! Those prudes? He'd be writing reports or doing press ups or some exercise and she'd be marking test results and planning more impossible scenarios for students. They wouldn't do anything outside the rules... I bet Shield and Timber Wolf do though."
"Y'know, when I think about it, I've never actually seen them on monitor duty together before."
"And now we know why!" Solstin said emphatically.
They both cracked up laughing. After that, their shift went much faster and involved many more laughs.
...............................
Half a light year from Second Base
Dawnstar of Starhaven was renowned for her stoicism.
Yet if the majority of her teammates had seen her at that moment they would have been very surprised.
Second Base was currently stationed three light years from the nearest inhabited system, and the winged tracker was half a light year further away from her teammates. Six hours before, she had left Southern Lights, Otaki and Officer Duwi to find solitude and now she was spinning through a shower of comets as they travelled out from the nearest Oort cloud.
While she flew, Dawnstar cried harder than she could ever remember having done before. She was not really sure why, but she knew it felt good to let her emotions out.
The tears were streaming from her eyes as she twisted and turned, instinctively dodging with balletic grace the tons of frozen methane and rock as they hurtled at many thousand of klicks an hour.
Her memories told her that she and the young blue skinned mystic from her home world, Southern Lights, had been romancing... She had led them through spatial vistas that she viewed as the most beautiful while holding hands, they had enjoyed socialising with their teammates while exchanging knowing glances between themselves at in-jokes...
She clearly remembered that they had been intimate...
And she didn't understand why she had allowed any it!
As much as she tried to rationalise why she should share so much of herself with the young mystic, she knew that she only looked at him as another teammate, a colleague, with a shared heritage but nothing else. Their Starhaven heritage was not enough to justify what she recalled they had done together. Why had she...?
<Dawnstar> Thunder's voice echoed across the flight ring generated telepathic matrix.
<not now, please Cece, this is not a good time>
<I'm sorry, but I think now may not be good but it is the right time> and with that, in a blur of speed, the First Base team leader, who was also one of Dawnstar's closest friends, appeared at her side.
Dawnstar turned to her friend, her expression hurt and angry.
She could see clearly the understanding and empathy on Cece's face.
<Oh, honey, let's talk... Please, it hurts me to see you in such pain> And with that, Thunder flew out of the streaming comets. Dawnstar paused for a second before she followed.
<Dawnstar...> Thunder began, tentatively, as it was obvious that her friend was upset.
<why did I let that boy... We... Cece, did he put a spell on me so he could take advantage...?>
<no! No Dawnstar. Southern Lights only ever cared for you, he deeply cared. You both adored each other>
<then why can't I remember those feelings?>
<it was a spell that went wrong. Nel Duwi filed a report. When I read it I knew I had to see you, to check you were okay>
<tell me what is happening Cece, please...> more tears fell as the tracker looked into her friends eyes. She could see the water pool in Cece's eyes as well.
Over the next forty minutes Cece Becks shared what she had seen happen between the tracker and the mystic, and what Dawnstar had told her about their relationship. All of this was before Thunder got onto the reasons why Dawnstar could no longer connect with those warm emotions. Both ladies cried, though by the end of the conversation there was an odd smile and even a warm hug.
<does he know if my feelings will return?>
<I'm not sure, though Officer Duwi's report stated that he had said if the depth of your feelings came back, your senses would get twisted again. That's not to say there isn't a solution out there as he was really upset as he kept his feelings for you when he cast that spell, so maybe with some further research...? I'm so sorry but I don't really understand his magical abilities. Glorith and Xao might be able to assist as well, maybe Mysa?>
Dawnstar turned away for a few seconds as she considered her friend's words.
<I feel I need some time to think about this... but I have to talk to Southern Lights. I owe him an apology for the way I spoke to him. Perhaps we can find a way to resume the path of our relationship... We were happy, weren't we?>
<you were Dawnstar, you truly were>
<then we must find a solution to this... to our predicament, one way or another. Surely, we both deserve happiness>

yay, more!
Tee-hee on the AI callout! Imagine how it has evolved in 1000 years!
lol, Old Father Time! and very realistic segment between Friction and Booster --- with a class so large, it makes sense that we'd have such different personalities, and not everyone would be friends with everyone else!
good on Janee for trying and continuing the conversation! I like her a lot better already!
ah, love the references to Chinese culture here, very well-researched and realistic, if I do say so from personal experience!
ahh love the gossip, and eager to see Janee and Solstin speaking with their respective love interests.... also, a nice potentially budding friendship here! very clever, having these two thrown together and bonding!
aww, how touching of Thunder to know that Dawnstar needs a friend (and the truth!) right now...
oooh, I love Dawny's conviction here. and yes, they both deserve happiness!
great stuff, Harbi, eager to see where you go with these!

Second Base, the apartment of Element Lad:
The senior team planned to hold a virtual meeting at 1200 standard UP time.
In the wee hours of the night before, Dr. Shakespeare had insisted on giving the returning team the all-clear before allowing them out of the now quarantined warp control room and back onto active mission status. In total, he had only taken half an hour to examine them all, but still Strobe and the Huntress had complained. Dr Shakespeare had given them both a cool smile but didn't say anything in return.
After the examination, Kent and Jan retired to Jan's apartment on Second Base, and the doctor had edited his readiness status to 'definitely do not disturb - just don't!'.
Over the next few hours, as the couple got reaquainted, Jan told Kent about the intra-dimensional journey he had led a team on, how happy the Justice Legion had been to have XS and Cosmic Kid back into their ranks. The intern Shadowsurfer had learned he couldnt teleport through shadows once they had left this reality so had opted to return with Jan, while Bloom, Zero and Tectonik had opted to travel on with the U247 team. After several days with the Justice Legion, the Henry avatar on Legion World Infinity planetoid had suggested he try to contact their realities counterpart.
The two men hadn't really spoken too much after that, and eventually had fallen asleep.
It was four minutes before the meeting was due to start that Kent reminded Jan that they should put on their clothes.
"Oh, I sometimes wish you were a Trommite... you Terrans are such pedants."
Both men laughed as they quickly fumbled on their outfits and continued to tease each other affectionately.
Holos of the majority of the Senior Team popped up into the air before Jan and Kent. There were several comments welcoming Jan back, and he smiled broadly as he told his colleagues that he had missed them. He followed up by saying that as impressive as the Justice Legion were, he found them to be a bit odd... even odder than his own team.
As the laughter died down, Troy called the meeting to order, and the Senior Team got down to business: they had a Try-Out to plan.
...................................
Second Base, central dojo:
Monsteressa - Aeolina Ana Gomez, Justice Legionnaire trainer of alternate dimension - strength, speed, durability, reflexes, assume animal characteristics
Amynta of Nostis ii, Ambassador of the Amazons to the Many Worlds of Man and representative of Artemis, the Eternal Goddess of the Hunt, was acting as an eager tour guide.
She had met Aoelina Ana Gomez when the Amazonian Legionnaire had been transported to an alternate reality during a battle with Captain Adym in the Bleed over a year and a half before. The two women had developed a deep fondness for each other, though when Amynta had returned to her home dimension, both believed they may never see each other again.
When Amynta, now calling herself the Huntress, had returned in a dimension travelling planetoid alongside another group of Legionnaires, Aeolina had been overwhelmed with happiness. She had never had strong feelings towards anyone as she did for the Amazon warrior.
It was obvious by the way Amynta flew towards her and embraced her in a tight hug that those feelings were reciprocated.
And now, finally, they were together, and in the Amazons home reality. Amynta had offered to show Aeolina around their bases and introduce her to the team. Aeolina smiled and suggested taking a tour today but not rushing the introductions, adding that she would never remember everyone's names if they were all told at the same time. The Huntress agreed and cheerfully led them through Second Base.
Word had gotten out that the Amazon Ambassador was showing a member of the Justice Legion around, and several of the team had went to introduce themselves. All of them afterwards that they had never seen Amynta so obviously happy happy!
The two women walked into the largest dojo on Second Base. Inside Karate Kid was sparring with Timber Wolf in the central area; both moved with a hypnotically ferocious speed.
"Brin!" Amynta yelled across the floor, "Come meet Aeolina."
Timber Wolf double back-flipped away from Karate Kid, landing three metres away. He bowed his head respectfully to the martial artist before backflipping again, this time across the floor to Amynta.
The Legionnaire from Zuun held his hand out for the woman with Amynta to shake. She gave him a wide grin, and she took his hand with a strong grip. Karate Kid hovered behind Brin with a warm smile on her face; she had met Aoelina in her home dimension so needed no introduction.
Amynta's pride shone as Brin explained the training set up on this Base. It was clear that the new woman understood far more than she let on as her questions verged towards the technical. Aeolina explained that she had been involved with training the Justice Legion after she had retired from active duty.
"So you were a Legionnaire, too?" Brin asked.
"As were both my parents, three of my grandparents, at least four cousins at one time or another, and several ancestors before them over the centuries. What can I say, I'm a third generation Legion brat." The surprise on Timber Wolf's face was clear. "Our Legion," She continued, "traces its history back to the original Justice League on Earth a millennia ago. There were a few short breaks over the millennia, but really we've been going strong in one form or another for over a thousand years. Your team has a bit of catching up to do." She added with a small smile.
"Would you like to show Brin what you can do?" Amynta asked Aeolina.
"I'd love to try though don't want to impose..."
"We're playing Tag." Karate Kid said, "we'd be happy for you to join us."
"Yeah, sure." Brin smiled before effortlessly cartwheeling away from the three woman, landing in the middle of the training space. Karate Kid turned and flew back over to the dojo.
"Rules are: no actively trying to hurt the other, no leaving the dojo space, no flight rings, and first one to get touched five times loses. You game?" Brin smiled, daring Aeolina to join them.
"Go on, my love, show them what you are made of." Amynta gave a broad smile as Aeolina stepped forward, accepting the challenge.
............................
In the next few minutes, both Timber Wolf and Karate Kid were pushed to their limits as Aeolina joined in with their game and showed just how fast and agile she could be.
It helped that, as well as preternatural reflexes and strength, she could alter herself to assume animal-like characteristics, like a prehensile tail - that tagged Brin as he tried to dodge her approach by somersaulting over her head - and sprouting bat-like wings that lifted her straight up so to avoid Karate Kid's deft attack.
Ultimately, Timber Wolf won the game, though it was a close finish.
"So," Brin asked as they took a seat, "do you want to join our team, is that why you're here?"
"No, I don't think so, I came back with your colleagues as I didnt want to lose this one again..." she turned and smiled at Amynta. "I've had my turn at being a hero. Amynta told me you have a planetoid that you use as an Academy of sorts to train this realities meta-beings. I'd like to work there, if they will have me."
"I think Rokk and Lu will jump at the chance..." Brin replied genuinely.
"That is what I told her." Amynta smiled proudly as she spoke.
Both Timber Wolf and Karate Kid could clearly see the adoration that their Amazonian teammate felt as she thanked them for their time and led Aeolina off to continue their tour.

Medi-bay One on First Base
Academy students:
Kid Flux - Uri Yekolleks of Rim World Stratokoviesk xii - hyper-reactive physical adaption to threat Wraith Boy - previously Invisible Kid iii - Mors Gwokyalya of Earth - invisibility, defensive intangibility, strength, Martian senses Rebounder- Lozaro Koosta-Nevarra of Rimbor - dense molecular structure giving great strength, speed, durability and reflection of physical attack Mentalla ii - Enali Dricommo of Titan - psionic possession and limited telepathy Granite Girl - Shessan Monasdotta from Frentoni Six - self petrification
Medic staff on First Base Shardwurd Gandussen of the Ten Peaks from Avalon - Silver Shaman - Medical Officer - biokinesis
Kid Flux hated being stuck in the quarantined section of the medi-bay.
He understood the reasons why he was here, and had it been anyone else in his position, he'd have told them to not complain and deal with it as it was for the common good. Unfortunately for him, it wasn't anyone else, and after over two weeks of being quarantined, it was not far from the truth to say Uri was thoroughly frustrated.
Since his initial admittance, there had been no more episodes with his abilities playing up. Dr. Shakespeare or one of the medical staff came in to check every two hours. They explained to him that Gear had fitted a wide range of sensors around the bay, so if his ability switched off again, they hoped to track any signal that might be causing these episodes.
Lozaro and Mors had dropped by, as they did every day. Initially, Uri had resented Mors as it was his odd Martian senses that had picked up on the Sgargrathi technology within him having some kind of living component. That was the justification for the quarantine he had been confined to. Two days later, Uri forgave him. He still resented it, but at least was clever enough not to blame one of his friends for doing the right thing...
This time, they two visitors were excited to tell him that in 5 day's time there would be a Try Out. It had been announced that morning that as a matter of tradition it was going to be held on Earth.
Mors saw snd immediately understood Uri's expression of disappointment as he too would be ineligible to apply due to his newly acquired abilities being too untested.
Lozaro told them that he hoped they'd understand but he was going to apply for an internship, so if it went well he may potentially make the main team before them. His friends both wished him well and, for good measure, teased him about how unlikely it would be that he'd ever become a proper Legionnaire; "they do have standards after all!" Uri said before barking a laugh.
Once he had stopped laughing Uri noticed the time and let his friends know that Enali and Shessan planned to visit him soon. Mors grimaced. Shessan had been sulking around him for a few days now after he had told her that he wasn't in a relationship with her.
Uri had heard it from both sides over the last few days and, honestly, he just didn't care. His worry was they would get into some drama like an argument here in the medi-bay, and that might be reflected back against his Academy scores.
Lozaro and Mors promised to visit the next day before they left.
Shardwurd popped his head through the door to check Uri was alone. The young medic smiled and went to the student's bedside. As he was checking Uri's pulse, Shardwurd unexpectedly whacked the student on the knee with the edge of his omnicom tablet. Uri's adaptive ability sprang into action and his skin took on a stone-like sheen, deflecting the blow.
"Ah, good, your power's still working. I'm glad I didn't hurt you."
"Me too." Uri replied.
Twenty minutes later, Enali snd Shessan appeared.
They excitedly told Uri about the Try Out and he once again kept his ire to himself that he would not be able to apply. This quarantine experience had given him time to ace all his academic learning, but was also seriously impinging on his aspirations and ambition. And the thought of Lozaro - as much of a decent friend as he was - making the team before him was so damn frustrating!
It didn't take long for Shessan to monopolise the conversation by turning everything into a complaint about Mors and how badly she believed he had acted by not reciprocating her feelings.
Uri and Enali both groaned at the same time, caught each other's eye and tried not to laugh as their fellow student continued to moan about how unfairly she felt she had been treated.

Five days later
"Welcome everyone! Before we open today's Try-Out, I have something to announce..."
Dream Girl stood under a spotlight at the centre of the large horseshoe shaped desk that dominated the room. Her Legion colleagues, the titors from the Academy, and the Support Staff from the various bases were all sitting in rows around her waiting to pass judgement on the applicants.
The space they were in was easily 100 metres wide and 300 long. The hall had been built in the late 28th century for a historic signing of the armistice between the United Planets and the Khunds after skirmishes along the borders of the two galactic empires threatened to plunge them into a war.
It was an impressive building with white alabaster arches every thirty metres that reached up to the heights above. The floor was pale creamy marble streaked with white and grey, veined in shades of ochre. Meanwhile, the ceiling above was a series of large, thinly sliced translucent Kiena Starstones from the Ventura system that allowed a diffuse buttery sunlight to warm the otherwise stark space. The far end of the hall opened up onto a wide plaza in central Metropolis not far from the original Legion clubhouse.
It had become a place that was rarely used in central Metropolis yet was still historically significant enough that Earth-Gov didn't want to sell it, despite numerous very generous offers. In recent years it would usually be rented out for lavish parties, wedding ceremonies for minor royalty, state engagements and even the occasional private school graduation. Rarely though would an event like today's draw so much attention to this magnificent space.
Consequently, Earth-Gov were more than happy to allow the Legionnaires to hold their Try-Out within its walls.
The media's spy-eye camera drones fluttered and jostled to get the best view, readying themselves for the good, the bad and, perhaps most popular of all with a sizeable percentage of viewers, the ugly too.
Crowds had been camping out for the last seventy-two hours, since this event had been officially announced. Each of them vying to get a decent viewing platform to witness the prospective Legionnaires first-hand.
Just inside the discreet force fields that kept the crowds back, were Fire Lad and Rainbow Girl from the substitute team, several dozen senators from Weber's World including Oodoo Shanair of Lallor, and seventy dignitaries from Earth. They were sat round a neatly arranged group of tables near the entrance with auto-waiters ensuring they were kept refreshed from a nearby bar.
On the right-hand side of the hall stood the applicants, waiting their turn to get called and - fingers crossed! - get moved over to the left-hand side where Brainiac 5 stood waiting for them. There, the Coluan would scan their DNA and produce an individual flight ring for any that gained enough votes to make it onto the team. Each of the applicants had already completed a huge amount of paperwork and been through extensive Science Police psyche and ability evaluation tests. Almost half of the applicants had been waiting for this opportunity since they had applied for the previous Try-Out.
Today was simply about the applicants showing themselves in the best possible light for both the public and Legionnaires.
Everyone knew that Legion Try-Outs were a huge media spectacle so, as had become tradition, a certain percentage of the applicants were expected to be offered full membership, while others may get a place at the Academy or perhaps be offered Substitute status. There were also some that were admitted purely for the crowds (and perhaps, though never officially confirmed, for the Legionnaires') amusement and entertainment value...
.........................
Nura took a slow breath and smiled before continuing:
"The majority of the current interns that have expressed an interest in progressing are being given an automatic pass. We already know how good they are, so, please welcome the first of today's new Legionnaires... from Hope World... Dragon Lass!"
The bat winged girl had been standing quietly at the side of the hall, but when her name was called, she let out a loud whoop and spun into the air. The assembled Legionnaires stood to applaud her as she took her place at the other side of the hall.
"Orion..." the foxlike intern cart wheeled across the floor as the Legionnaires continued to applaud.
"Tesseract..." The sparkling-skinned Martian girl nodded her head in a rare show of respect and smiled as she flew across the floor.
"...and of course, Army of One! Welcome all. You have been invaluable on Hope World and I do sincerely wish that you all decide to stay on there with Thom and I, and the rest of the team." Army of One skipped across the floor, waving at the cameras as they dived in for live footage to broadcast.
Nura clapped enthusiastically as the four former interns - now full Legionnaires - from Hope World took their place together and waved to the crowd. After the applause had died down, Nura continued.
"They weren't the only interns that the team agreed have earned their place as fully fledged Legionnaires. We would also like to invite the following to join our little group..."
"Impact", the powerfully built bald young woman strode to the centre of the hall where she waved enthusiastically to the crowds before flying over to Brainiac 5.
"Haze", the red skinned intern from Ungara looked genuinely shocked as he flew across the hall, almost forgetting to acknowledge the crowds until he reached the other side.
"Thunderbolt", the young woman flew into the air before assuming her lightning form and zipping around the hall to spell out THANX with her electric trail. The crowd erupted with cheers at this exciting display of power.
"...and Polestar". The Braalian looked ecstatic as she flew into the middle of the room and used her magnokinesis to pull the metal woven in her outfit into the outline of a large heart shape that spun around her. The crowds cheered enthusiastically once again.
"And, although they're up on First Base at the moment, Snoop is now a full member of our Support Crew. Well done and welcome to the team to you all, you deserve this!"
The crowds roared and the Legionnaires remained standing as they clapped and cheered the former interns that had just walked and flew across the hall.
"What about me?" The magical elf called the Imp Master called out, his face clearly showing his disappointment, "I have been in your training program for longer than any of them."
"Chill, man, we'll get our chance..." Little Loki, one of the two other interns not chosen for full Legionnaire status, whispered as he stood at the elf's side. Mosaic, the Lallorian mutant who was the other intern not chosen, agreed there was no need to create a fuss.
"It was felt you're not ready yet." Nura gave a smile as she replied though her expression was definitely frosty.
"Farcical! You have promoted idiots..." Imp Master stared up at the Legionnaires in disgust for a few seconds before storming out of the hall.
"What a doofus! Goodbye to bad rubbish!" Laurel Kent said to Brin Londo.
Unfortunately, she had forgotten that there were microphones keyed up to broadcast the Legionnaire's words to the crowds outside. Imp Master and several thousand other sentients heard her comment.
As the Elven academy student walked away, several small imps materialised behind him and made very expressive and rude gestures to the Legionnaires.
Laurel Kent's laughter echoed over the crowd who happily joined in.
............................
"First up... we'll be checking out the applicants that are not currently students at the Academy. Don't worry," Nura looked at the group of students from the Academy that were waiting together as several groaned, "You'll all get your chance but wait your turn, okay? We have guests..." she gave a warm smile before continuing.
"Okay, so the first lucky potential Legionnaire to be called is... let's see, ah...Nahal Dra Hume of Gontran Freeworld iii." Dream Girl looked up from her hard light screen and smiled, "Isn't that on the far edge of the Southern Fringe... settled by philosophers and artists during the Didactic Purge in the late 27th century? Is that right?"
Nura had smiled gently as she asked the slim young man who had stepped out into the open space at the centre of the hall. He was reasonably tall with broad shoulders and a bit of a swagger to his step. He also had perhaps the darkest skin she had ever seen on one of pure human stock. He wore a sage green hooded tunic with padding across the shoulders and three thick gold bands going round both cuffs, a black belt, deep green leggings with hand-sized golden chevrons running down the outside of each leg, and shiny black boots. She noticed that he had silver rings on all of his fingers.
"Thank you, Dream Girl. You are correct, my home is in the far Southern Fringe, and I'm impressed that you know of us as we are some distance from the main trading routes." He gave the Legionnaire a smile that lit up the room. Dream Girl smiled back, not admitting that she had just read the information about his home world from a hard light screen on the desk before her.
"So, what can you do?" Gazelle shouted down at him. Several of her teammates gave her disapproving looks.
"Miss Gazelle..." he nodded towards her and issued another glorious smile. "I'd like to join you under the name Armoury... Because I can do this..." As he spoke, he drew his hands apart and the air between them sparkled as a bow with an arrow nocked in it ready to fire appeared in his hands. They glowed faintly. He moved his hand apart and the bow disappeared and instead there was a glowing short sword in each hand. Just as quickly he flipped his arms out and had a round shield on his right arm.
"Very nice, but can you use them?" Timber Wolf said as he vaulted over the top of the desk and floated down to stand ten feet across from the applicant.
The young man held up his hands showing the rings on each finger, "Each of these represents a challenge I've had to overcome to achieve the powers I have been gifted with... So, yes, I can use the weapons I summon. Do you want to challenge me?" He gave another broad smile as he finished talking.
Timber Wolf sprung at the young man and almost caught him, though just in the nick of time Armoury twisted out of the way. As he did a weighted net materialised in his right hand that he swiped towards the Legionnaire. A small shield appeared on his left arm and he held it up in front of himself as Brin Londo dodged the net and spun to attack the applicant again. The net vanished and was replaced by a six foot long bo-staff.
Armoury fought bravely, showing impressive combat skills; three times he managed to push Timber Wolf back in what was a surprisingly even encounter. At one point, by using a quarter staff and a net, he almost caught the Legionnaire.
Timber Wolf finally flipped over the applicant's head and pounced on top of him in a burst of speed, pinning him to the floor. Brin held tightly to the applicants' wrists above his head. "Do your powers need your rings to work? What happens if I take them off you?"
"I will be offended if you do," the applicants' tone was serious, "and I'll still summon weapons to fight you. These rings are the highest honour my people give to their champions. They are not to be taken off by anyone but me." His face showed his anger at the thought of his hard-won rings being forcibly taken and he wriggled his body, desperate to get free from underneath the stronger Legionnaire.
"That's enough Brin!" Tyroc shouted down. Brin spun upwards, perfectly executing a double flip before landing on his feet.
Armoury got to his feet and bowed his head respectfully towards Timber Wolf before turning to face the Legionnaires as they sat watching above.
"Let me show you." He slipped the ten silver bands off his long fingers, placing them carefully before him on the floor, then drew his hands out and a short crossbow appeared in his right hand while a broadsword appeared in his left. "The rings are a reminder of the sacrifice and honour of my role. Each of them was won in a challenge."
"You did real good there, kid, I'm impressed and I'll be voting for you." Brin Londo stated as he mirrored the young man's respectful nod, before bounding back up to his seat to cast his vote
"Let me tally the votes..." Nura said as she looked at the hard light screens in front of her. Each of the Legionnaires had a selection of keys on their desk which they used to indicate whether or not they approved of each applicant. Currently it showed that there was overwhelming support for this application.
"Okay, thank you Nahal. You'll be glad to hear we are happy to accept you into the Legion. We look forward to getting to know you better, so, if you take your place over by Brainiac 5..." Nura gave a big supportive smile as she announced this.
The crowd outside roared their approval!
..............................
The next applicant was Prak Bleros of Gundorran ii, who called himself Shockwave and could produce reasonably powerful pulses of energy. His power was difficult to aim, he admitted, and it tired him out quite quickly but he had only had this ability for two months so hoped that being a Legionnaire would give him the support he needed to fully realise his potential.
He was offered a place at the Academy, and the young man happily agreed.
The next applicant could generate strong smells of food stuffs... he said his ability would be a great way to distract opponents. The vote was strongly against him and several Legionnaires said after the applicant had left the hall that they felt surprisingly hungry.
He was followed by a tall girl in a bubblegum pink body stocking. "My name is Florry Ningdan and I'm from Braal though don't have the magnokinesis gene, my parents aren't from there originally. Anyway, I always wanted to be a hero like our planetary champion, the amazing Cosmic Boy..." she gazed up towards Rokk Krinn with clear adoration writ across her face, "So when I got my powers, I knew exactly what to do." With that her torso and limbs stretched and twisted until they were three times their natural length, "I want to be the Legionnaire known as Elasticka!"
It quickly became apparent that the young girl's abilities, while visually impressive, were limited. She could stretch any part of herself up to roughly three times its natural length, and had a limited degree of physical durability due to the rubber-like nature of her body. As her Try-Out came to an end, it was clear she would not be accepted though Thunder gave her some advice:
"Your powers will set you apart and while you will not become a Legionnaire today, you can still do a lot of good and be a role model for others. I suggest that a stint with the Substitute Legionnaires here on Earth would be a great experience for you as you further your heroic career."
Elasticka smiled, her expression a mixture of thanks and some sadness as she said she would definitely think about it. Fire Lad was heard to cheer from his seat and he enthusiastically waved her across to join him.
After that, the next would-be Legionnaire was a young woman with a golden turban who told the Legionnaires she could quote any literature so long as she was in the same room as the book they were quoting from, without having to take any time to read it... unfortunately, as there were no written texts close by, she couldn't exhibit her ability.
She was quickly voted out.
Before she could leave the hall, Brainiac 5 kindly suggested the young woman might find more success if she were to apply for a post at the UP's World Library as they could make full use of her rather unique ability.
Halidanomy Manchester Yellow Frinkonikan-Smythereen xvii of Greechan 5 had an unusual psychic ability that was especially ironic giving his interesting name: he could induce in others an overwhelming sense of dreadful mind numbing boredom... surprising no-one, he was rejected.
Fire Lad and Rainbow Girl looked away. Both desperate not to make eye contact with the failed applicant as he walked out of the hall for fear he might misinterpret a shared glance as an offer to join the Substitutes.
Filep Borbann from Parisopolis on Earth was next. The young man with blue hair in a long ponytail could manifest a solid-light force field that caused physical threats to slide away from him. It was a bit more than just a frictionless surface as it actively pushed away the threats that came straight towards him. He could also form these fields into rudimentary shapes within a three metre radius of his body.
As he recorded high IQ and EQ scores, and had rated appropriately on the SP motivation evaluation tests, he was quickly offered a place at the Academy. He accepted, stating he would make the Motherworld proud by becoming a Legionnaire one day.
The crowd cheered loudly for their fellow Terran.
The applicant after him, called themselves the Super Fence Kid. They were rejected as their ability to increase their body's width though not, it transpired much to their embarrassment, the sense of balance needed to stay upright as they stretched their body out to the sides, was not deemed worthy of Legion membership.
Several Legionnaires showed incredible self-control as they stifled their laughter.
......................................
"Me next! Me next!" A high-pitched voice that several Legionnaires present recognised said loudly.
"Pop!"
The Drungarene hero teleported in quick succession along the line of Legionnaires, though stopped in front of Spoiler.
"You... you're the only one who's ever caught Pop!" the small applicant bowed to the Naltoran Legionnaire before diving off the desk and flying out into the middle of the room and floating in front of the Legionnaires.
"Supercutie!" Comet Queen exclaimed happily as she leant forward, her hands reaching across the desk like a child towards candy.
The hero from the Drungarene super-team the Inspirationals, had changed his outfit from when he had met a group of Legionnaires. Where before he had a cloak and wore bright colours, he now wore a dark grey skinsuit with a dozen thin neon blue lines running from one shoulder to the opposite hip cutting diagonally in to cross at a point on his midriff. It was a far sleeker and mature look.
For all that, he still looked like a young child, standing not much over a metre tall, with a head that to human perspective was slightly too large and big dark eyes. His home world was often referred to the Doll World due to the indigenous people's appearance.
Several Legionnaires unsuccessfully hid their smiles.
"You say I'm the only one to ever catch you, what did you mean by that?" Spoiler called across. The Drungarene smiled and vanished, appearing once more before Spoiler on the desktop that ran along the front of the seated Legionnaires.
"Pop! knows what's around him so Pop! can avoid it when I..." He vanished again and instantly reappeared in the air once more, "Pop! This makes Pop! hard to catch."
"Will you show me?" Gazelle spoke again. At her side, Ferro put a hand over his eyes and groaned.
"Challenge accepted!" Pop! laughed as he agreed.
"AI, set a holo training cube, five metres on all side." The Khundian said to the onsite AI. There was a breep and on the floor in the centre of the hall a holo-cube materialised. The walls of the cube were bars of red light that clearly delineated the training area.
"Come with me, tiny warrior. Let us see if you are as fleet as you say." Gazelle dived down into the holo-cube.
As she reached the cube, the Drungarene materialised inside of it. "We do not leave this box, is that right? The first to do so loses, yes? Catch me if you can!" he said with another high-pitched laugh. As the khundian leapt towards him he disappeared and materialised on her back, though Gazelle quickly spun into a cartwheel, throwing him off.
In the next two minutes the Legionnaires witnessed firsthand just how tricky the short teleporter could be as he kept Gazelle at arm's length while managing to land slaps and taps on her with what appeared to be relative ease. It was obvious to everyone present that Pop! was having tremendous fun, while Gazelle was becoming increasingly frustrated.
It all came to an end when Gazelle leapt at Pop!, her arms swinging wildly and he neatly ducked, putting a foot out to trip her then teleported behind the Khundian to push her, sending her through the holo-bars of the training cube. As she fell to the floor, the Drungarene materialised before her and offered a hand to pull her up. She ignored him and sprung to her feet.
"The Battle Brigade will disown me..." Gazelle muttered darkly to herself as she took to the air to fly back to her seat. Quite a few of her colleagues looked away as they hid their smiles and laughter.
Tyroc stood up and addressed the hall. "Applicant Pop! Thank you for that rather surprising display. Would you join Armoury over there. You'll be happy t'hear you wer' successful in gettin" the votes to join us. Welcome to the Legion."
Pop! gave a florid bow to the seated Legionnaires looking on from above, spun round to bow to the crowds and teleported across the hall's marble floor to join Brainiac 5.
The crowd outside the hall cheered.

Hope you enjoy!

yay, more! I like that the Subs and ambassadors are invited - makes sense to have support for new members! individualized flight rings! great idea, and more secure! some admitted purely for entertainment, hoo boy! very reality TV like! oh cool, great that some interns are being graduated just like that! they've already proven themselves, after all! and also good that they get the chance to be announced and strut their stuff, too! Eight new full members, cool! Some cool power displays too! ah, Imp Master is proving the Legionnaires were right ... he's not ready yet! At least Little Loki and Mosaic are taking it more maturely. LOL at Nura pretending to know about that applicant's homeworld! huh, interesting power there by Armoury! a real superpower, though one related to weapons, cool. clever way to get under the "only innate super powers" rule interesting that Armoury got voted in despite not really beating Brin, but he did show enough chops! a new Academy student - Shockwave sounds nicely humble! and of course, we have a dud, poor Smell Boy! curious what the dividing line between Sub and Academy student is? did Elasticka get the Subs nod because of her limited powers, and because she can already control them well enough? Book Girl is... an interesting concept! She was not very prepared though I do like how the Legionnaires are trying to be constructive with their rejects! hah at the Subs not wanting to encourage Boredom Boy! ah, some insight into Academy placement - they also look for potential and attitude, got it! Pop! is a nice different kind of teleporter, and this kind of teleportation has great combat potential! I apologize, I quite forgot where he appeared before, but he looks like a good one! aw Gazelle, don't be such a sore loster! wow, 10 new members already, your team sure is growing! eager to see how your roster looks like at the end of this!
