My acquisition of "The Way We Were" by Dave Pether

"In the 1980s Dave Pether started producing several paintings for the weekend British TV series called London Weekend Television (LWT) - well known for showing American films and TV show series as well as British ones. The images were used for intro titles as well as backgrounds for commercial breaks. Most would have been used 1983-1987. This one still has the original acetate overlay showing the title - a bit dusty/cloudy - but still interesting for historical reasons/provenance, and can be removed, of course, for framing. This one, created for memorable film starring Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand is hand-painted in Acrylic and gouache on illustration board 12.5" x 16.5" and comes with a label attesting to its authenticity signed by Pether's widow, mounted to the back."

This time instead Jason came up with the back story for this one so here is a quote of his version.

"Okay so here goes. When the Crisis happens, somehow the Legion gets in a battle with Asgardians. In the battle, someone close to Bouncing Boy is wounded, not killed, but Bouncing Boy takes it hard and wants a bit of revenge. With all the powers in the great number of Legionnaires, he figures a way to bust into Asgard. The first one he finds is Volstagg and jumps him with a bit more temper than we are use to seeing from him.

Hopefully, other Legionnaires are going to follow, because when the rest of the Asgardians find out, he's gonna need back up."

Shoemaker has still got it! His Legionnaires look as effervescent and full of life as they ever did (to paraphrase Fat Cramer's insightful comments during the Legion forum Re-reads from a few years ago.)

Much as I love the Legion artists who followed him (i.e. Jurgens, Lightle, and LaRocque, in that chronological order,) I can't help but sometimes feel wistful at what might have been, if Shoemaker hadn't quit after just a few issues.
