I guess I'm looking for a title that is more Action and Adventure - where the plot drives the characterization, than Young Romance - where characterization drives the plot. The kind of story that SG LoSH #22 is used to be a segway story between major plotlines, not the "major" story itself. This Legion is a do-nothing Legion. With the current creative team and the entire 31st century as a canvas, I expected a whole lot more, especially by now.

I liked this issue for the characterisation, but it does little to aid the glacial advance of the Tarik / LSV plotline, unless the 'casteless' dominator is trying out for LSV membership. That could, I suppose, explain his demands to be provided 'real legionnaires' to fight - he needs to kill one as an initiation test?

Sun boy's new look is OK, I guess. It took me a page to realise that that was who he was supposed to be, though.

RR as a full Legionnaire? This really is the Legion of Super-delinquents!

I like the cosmic menaces too, but this was a perfectly acceptable premise for a Legion comic. I'd rather have stories like this than an unending stream of galactic threats like the DnA Legion had. I liked the DnA Legion, but after a while I was thinking, God, does the threat level ever drop below 'frantically flashing red'?

I loved this issue, but would have loved it more if the story were advancing less glacially. It seems clear this book is treading water for some reason -- I would guess awaiting developments in "52" -- another book I love, but moves MUCH too slowly. I'm also annoyed they haven't taken the opportunity advertise more the connections between S/LSH and 52. It's only the best-selling comic, you know?

Gripe aside, this was the best characterization of Legionnaires since, I don't know when. Levitz, probably. Every character hit on all cylinders. I've already discoursed on U-Boy on Matthew's "code" thread, so I won't bore everyone further. But it's now clear the connection between between Jo's personality and powers.

Shady surprised me a bit, don't shadows imply nuance? But then I thought about explaining shadows to my 4-year-old. "Shadows are darkest in the brightest light." So Shady is an all-or-nothing, black-and-white, love-me-or-leave-me kind of gal. I can dig it. This Ultra Boy seems a good match for her, then. I like having an assertive, "knows who she is" Shadow Lass.

Now Karate Kid's infatuation with Phantom Girl makes more sense. He was on the rebound from Tasmia. Seriously, Val's powers require a near-infinite spectrum of nuance, subtlety and precision. Being an expert in all martial arts means he always sees things from more than one point of view. Who would be more sympathetic to that than a girl of two worlds, each invisible to the other?

More evidence that Light Lass and Cosmic Boy have a thing. Everyone knows Cos is reacting to Supergirl, and Ayla takes off in a huff the moment Kara appears!

Ahh, young love!

...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

Quite liked this issue - good characterisation on Karate Kid (who looked tremendous and is fast becoming a favourite), Jo and shady. Not too sure about Super Girl - I still believe she's tied to the Dominion, she really can't be that sickly sweet nice can she? Maybe she took Roy away to give him to Tariq afterall we didn't see him at the clubhouse after that? Some of the colouring was awful - 'Stasi' was previously blue, now just another caucasian, blah!

Looking forward to finding out what happened to Terror Firma.

When I read this issue, I thought it's not going to do anything for critics of this book but confirm their dislike.

The characterisation was good, to be sure, but the sense of import to the proceedings was sorely lacking. Sun Boy (I also didn't know it was him at first) and a bunch of Terror Firma characters who I don't even recall in the slightest fight the mad Dominator thing...that seems like it might be important, but I feel like I can't be sure. But then meanwhile we spend most of the issue watching KK, Shady, and Ultra Boy sort out their relationship issues. Didn't realize they had any relationship issues. Again, the characters were well-drawn, but I can't help but to feel like this should have been a subplot, and not the main thrust of the book. Others put it well when they said this issue should have been an "in-between" issue.

Mark Waid is leaving after three years? I'm fearful that the build up will continue this way up until the last three or four issues, and then it will all come together in a mad rush. And that whoever picks up after him is going to basically have to start from scratch. These characters don't feel sustainable to me.

I actually enjoy this version of the LSH for the most part, and I've loved a lot of Waid's stuff in the past, but even I felt like I was getting tired after reading this issue. It wasn't bad, it just felt like "here we go again..."

Incidentally, in my opinion, Karate Kid doth protest too much when he goes on and on and on and on at the end about Shady, Ultra Boy, and Supergirl.

I think that Waid said something to the effect that he had a three year arc planned out when he began the book. So basically it's confirmed that he's staying for three years, but we know nothing beyond that.

One last thing about #22: I wish that the "Vote For Brainiac 5" sign was written in Interlac.

Also, since he was promised to us in #15, it should have been Bouncing Boy and NOT Radiation Roy getting recruited. (Unless he's a plant for the opposition and then I prefer that it be Dynamo Boy!)

Finally got this issue on Saturday.
By the time it gets to me reading this thread I haven't the foggiest what had happened in it. It's obviously not making a big impact.

Recently bought the Superman/Batman/Supergirl book which introduced Kara.
Ah, that's how Supergirl should be drawn.
Michael Turners art if F'n'Amazing!
The first picture of Kara when she turns round into the headlight is jaw-droppingly brilliant.
(And the colouring deserves a mention too - can't remember the guys name off the top of my head, sorry!)

The Supergirl that we're getting here seems to be drawn with a stencil.

Eye of the beholder I guess. I think Turner's Supergirl looks like a crack whore, while Barry's is all kinds of heroic with beauty and grace.

Needless to say I much prefer Barry's version.

I'm not 100% sold on Sun Boy's new costume, but I really like the new "butch" look! Much better than the turtleneck-leggings-wedge haircut look!

I want him back in the 'real' Legion though!

I don't just feel that things are moving slowly.
It strikes me that Mr. Waid doesn't really have anything to say about this Legion, so he's "treading water" as was previously stated.

What he DOES write feels like a struggle, to me.
The characterization is minimal, like we know these characters already, which we don't.
And when we get some interaction, it's either shallow or silly or both.

Tasmia and Jo are SO shallow and stupid I'm glad that they've been paired so that they don't inflict themselves on anyone else.

The only interesting recent development is that Brainy's managed to give himself a split personality and possibly, created the new Time Trapper (Nura's rebooted mind and body).
But, that's nothing new for him.
sigh

I still love Barry, though.

i finally dropped this title. and i might pick it up if Kitson starts drawing it again.

< i know i'm a sourpuss >

i think the story that would be new and interesting here is the origin story of "teens banding together against a repressive society", yet Waid said he wouldn't tell that story because everybody knows hwo teh LSH formed.

Well. First, Barry Kitson never really left the book; he just hurt his hand for a while and will be back soon.

Second, I don't think Waid said he wasn't going to tell the story; he just didn't want to start with it. I expect the Legion's origin to be told within the next, oh, year or two (they might be saving it for 2008, which has the potential to be a really big year), and I expect it not to be "Those men--they're going to kill Mr. Brande!" all over again.

Practically a whole issue devoted to telling us Ultra Boy is one-note? sigh

At least the Sun Boy/SuperDominator subplot is interesting.

I for one enjoy DeKraker's art, no complaints having him fill-in for Barry.

I tend to agree. Only two things have kept me on this long: (1)Kitson art and (2)the amount of time and effort I spent rebuilding and expanding my LSH collection over the past few year. Seeing all the trends of ups and downs, I'm optimistic of there being another "up" run someday, and that I'll someday have a book that I actually look forward to again.

Right now, I settle for the occassional "well, that wasn't so bad" issue, or ones like #22 that are enjoyable if you come in not expecting much.
