Unfortunately for some naysayers, the North East really does have the best pizza in the US, far better than Chicago, California, or anywhere. For the best in New Haven (which I feel is the best of all), try “Pepe’s Pizza”, “Sally’s Pizza” or “Modern Pizza”, all equally famous, the first being famously shipped out to Hollywood every Friday for Michelle Pfeiffer’s husband (David E. Kelly?). The best in Manhattan if of course Lombardi’s in Soho (the first pizzeria in the US), although the very best New York has to offer is in Brooklyn, at Grimauldi’s.
Now, often you will hear about NY pizza being kind of shabby b/c its by the slice and you run in and grab a previously cooked pizza…well, that’s not the case for these places. Here, you get the real deal. I’d say the best in the US comes down to Grimauldi’s vs. Pepe’s.
