manapul posted some pencils for the next issue which are glorious page 6 page 7 page 8 page 9 page 9 shows an all new level of "make me very sad for the state of the legion" and "very happy for new legion" and "very happy for new manapul project" so that both things i love will be purified. and this is toned down from what was asked for. this is why i drink.

Beautiful. I love the detail, like the broken heel on page 8.

Turtle guy looks so earnest! Kind of like hapless Fruit Boy...
Wow. That's a Night Girl with some serious attitude going on, nothing at all like the Cosmic Boy-stalker she came off as in her original incarnation!
Four new Legionnaires, three of them looking like they are going to be no-nonsense femmes? The one male character looking likely to have a purely defensive power, while all three of the women have offensive powers? How 'bout that! Subvert those tired gender cliches!

Wow I hope Night Girl gets in (and not killed sorry too many deaths makes me a real cynic) and she and Shady can team up to have adventures together I think they would be bad ass. That and I hope they've given her some other powers or something that she can contribute uniquely to the legion so she isnt rejected for having only dark time super strength.
Bring back the super-cousins

Well, it's pretty obvious that Gazelle gets in since she's on the cover of issue #50, but since they're about to pull the plug on the whole series, I don't really see the point of inducting anyone at this point. What are the odds that they're going to see the light of day in the next reboot? If we look at the past several reboots, the only Legionnaires who reliably get carried over to the next version are the classical silver agers.

somehow i don't see the busty NG losing her clothes IMMEDIATELY as "subverting gender cliches". another piece of Shooter 'enlightened' scripting. According to FJM he toned the scene down from Shooeter's original script!!!
"Our devotion to each other was unexplainable" "You were kids" "No Batman, we were Legion"

Wow! Francis can draw, can't he. I can't wait to own this little beauty.
Maybe Francis can draw the relaunch in ADVENTURE COMICS!

See, this is what i was looking for in the new book. Shooter should have been on this from the start. Good story, enough psuedo-science to make it futuristic, lots of intrigue, Sun Boy doing a mei culpa concerning running off with the wanderers...This was good stuff.
Night girl...in some respects my favorite legion character for years behind Wolf. Turtle boy seemed like a less powerful version of stone boy, and Sizzle reminded me of "reflecto".
Poor LL. So newly free, so pointless, lol.
Good stuff. I really liked it.
Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!
Something pithy!

Front splash page (as well the cover) are just gorgeous. Don't know what other word to use. The whole comic, just beautiful to look at.
Quite a turn in the story, one of my favorite issues of the run. Did we or didn't we just find out how they are going to bring Dream Girl back to the physical world? I think we did.
Great issue.

Thanks for dragging my statement into another of your hate-fueled diatribes. [/b]being critical of how females are portrayed in this comic is not "hate-filled diatribe". you posited that this comic was being representative of subverting gender cliches and i pointed out how it wasn't. please keep your comments on the topic and not as directed attacks to me, thanks.

As sombody on Manipul's page pointed out, and I think generally true, male superheroes are always coming out of the fight with torn and removed clothing. So, I agree with Set on two counts. Three great sounding offensive minded women and a defensive minded male as well the costume issue.
Still, I'm pretty glad fjm "toned it down." We got a discussion on gender roles instead of gratuitous (ness?). I realize it's only a boob :0 but still...
After my initial, "oh no they didn't do that," my thought was "that wouldn't have happened if she had had her costume designed by (what was the name of the company?) M'Rissey. So, point Shooter.
Am I STILL the only one thinking Shooter has told us how he will "reconstitute" Dream girl?
BTW: anyone else noticing that all the visitors keep saying the same thing in their dialect? Or is that meant to show us the translator isn't working?

Hmm. I'm surprised the comments seem to be so overwhelmingly positive so far.
Color me critical, but I thought it was an incredibly fast read and was extremely disappointed that we FINALLY get Sun Boy back and Projectra's reaction happens off panel? And then he sums up the whole Terror Firma/Orando genocide/I'm running off to join a new club debacle that's been on the back burner for years in 6 panels! And only ONE member voted against readmitting him? WTF? Hopefully Projectra will mop the floor with him later.
I am now predicting the doomed Legionnaire to be Invisible Kid. Notice the whole self-pitying speech that seemed to come out of nowhere and is typically employed whenever a Legionnaire is about to get the axe. "Poor me. Nobody notices me. I don't like people seeing me. I don't like [seeing] myself." To be followed by said Legionnaire proving his worth by sacrificing himself for the good of all.
I too am hoping that Brainy's found a way to revive Dream Girl. Just hope she's got her eyes and her powers back when/if it happens.
I liked the formation of the Legion Reserve, with the stipulation that they'd be called to bat as their specific powers were needed, which is something I've long wanted to see.
I liked the artwork okay, but it's still too manga for my tastes and I'm sick of all these spikey hairdos. I see Timber Wolf has joined the spiked up hair clique this issue too.

Again, these pages prove to me I am right in saying this run will be remembered well in the future, much like TMK boldness and high marks were acknowledged much later due to the more vocal "virginal Legion" gang always winning an argument on the short run. And I didn't see any "demeaning" woman thing, again. What I saw was a badass woman who fought independently of her clothes falling of or not. And I don't think FJM changed what Shooter tried to show: in fact, he was more effective in showing not a "ripped" costume, but a torn one. Materialistically speaking, it makes so much more sense. Kudos to FJM.
I'll miss this team, definitely. I doubt we will see something better on ADV.

Wow, that was fast.
So, I like the Night Girl upgrade. She doesn't need total darkness to be powerful just the absence of what we consider normal light and she's finally defined as being in the top class of super strength fighters. I'm sure the gamers out there are trying to figure out the exact limits of those new definitions right now. Cool.
The Waidboot finally gets a new version of the Subs with some serious kick butt power and it happens just before the series is canceled. It figures.

I too thought this issue was just ok. Not really an unforgettable story, but much better than last issue. The best part for me was the return of Sun Boy, but I have to agree with jimgallagher that Dirk kind of got back in way too easy for my tastes. Something else else in the way he was explaining things, the way he kept looking down... I think he's hiding something or at the very least he's holding back information for his own reasons.
The tryouts were finally handled seriously this issue (about time there too). This new Legion Reserves is interesting, too bad they won't survive this 3boot incarnation as I doubt anyone will bother with them once LO3W ends. Maybe Jim can "blow them up real good" in #50 so they can all go out in a blaze of glory?
This arising "crisis" with these suddenly-here-they-are-major players/villans-on-the-horizon Intruder Planet delegation just seems a bit too, oh I don't know what's the word ..."convenient" to explain away the whole demeted plot thread running the entire Shooter run. It's contrived, predictable writing IMO.
The artwork was excellent for me and suits the Legion's timeline. Barry Kitson and Francis J have to have about two of the most opposite styles of drawing I have ever compared and yet each of their styles worked on its own individual strength.

if memory serves me correctly, we did see Ral Benem and Brek Bannin in the Threeboot as members of Mekt's Wanderers group, as Plant Lad and Polar Boy respectively. no sign of Fire Lad, Stone Boy, or Color Kid.

I like Gazelle okay, but of the 4 applicants, 3 of them have the tired old super strength/speed/invulnerability thing going on. Why does that sound so familiar? Oh, yeah. Because half a dozen Legionnaires already have those powers.
I thought Sizzle's powers were the most original and interesting, yet she got rejected in favor of someone whose powers are already present in abundance on the team.

In her original appearance it's stated that Night Girl's strength is surpassed only by Superboy and Mon-El.
