"My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country"
Nathan Hale was executed on this day in 1776 by the British for spying for the United States.
There is a memorial of him at Yale University, at his old dormitory, that the public is not allowed to have access too. Since I used to work there in the summers (Yale is five minutes away from me), I got to see it, and it is very cool.
He's Connecticut's official state hero!

![ShrinkingViolet ShrinkingViolet](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/ShrinkingViolet.gif) Today in history, on Sept. 22nd, this person attempted to assasinate this U.S. President Gerald Ford. Name the assassin and the year. Bonus: Can you also name the person who attempted an assassination of Ford 17 days earlier? ![ShrinkingViolet ShrinkingViolet](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/ShrinkingViolet.gif)

![ShrinkingViolet ShrinkingViolet](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/ShrinkingViolet.gif) I applaud you for working from memory as I'm sure many will take the easy route (casts an accusatory glance towards Cobalt) but that isn't quite correct, beauteous Raven. Lynnette "Squeaky" Fromme IS the name of the assassin from the bonus question, though! You were definitely in the ballpark, if not inches from the dugout! On a side note... I wonder why they called her Squeaky. ![ShrinkingViolet ShrinkingViolet](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/ShrinkingViolet.gif)

There was no googling ![wink wink](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/wink.gif) . I just happen to have been brushing up on my Revolutionary history these last few years... "Squeaky" was one of Charles Manson's mainstay members of the Manson family, and one of the few that didn't ever get to go to jail. Until of course, she attempted to assassinate the president. Some say it was on her own accord (most likely), but it was definately to usher in the new age that Charlie Manson convinced her of half a decade earlier. She has her own website, which is pretty creepy too. (I've always been fascinated by Manson and other seriel killers, it used to be a hobby of mine to read up on them). Can't say I know the answer to the first question though without doing a google check.

On a side note... I wonder why they called her Squeaky. I believe the second assassin (today's) was Sara Jane (or Jean) Moore. In one of the attempts, the man who stopped the assassin, was later outed as being gay by the mainstream media.

And Squeaky got her knickname when the old man who owned the ranch the Family took over, George Spahn I think was his name, gave it to her. He took a liking to her and would try to grope her when he could. When he did, she would 'squeak'.

Today in Beatles history, on Sept. 23rd, the Beatles recorded 45 takes of "Happiness Is a Warm Gun." What was the year? ![CosmicBoy CosmicBoy](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/CosmicBoy.gif)

What year was it? Hmm... I believe he came to power in the mid-1920s. 1924?

![PhantomGirl PhantomGirl](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/PhantomGirl.gif) Perhaps, but the clue says "re-established." And since it's the 24th now and I should post a new clue I'll go ahead and answer it. The year was 1943. ![PhantomGirl PhantomGirl](/forums/images/graemlins/default_dark/PhantomGirl.gif)

Oh. I thought the "re-established" referred to the fact that Mussolini claimed to be re-establishing the Roman Republic, complete with its symbol, the fasces. I guess the "Northern Italy" part should have clued me in, though.
