I'm not going to be around much the next few weeks, so I'm giving it to Drake because (1) he was closest with Manhunter, (2) I've obviously chosen too obscure a topic, despite his story being prominently reprinted every decade, and (3) he's put the most effort into trying.
Dan Kingdom was one of those disposable "good friend"s of Batman who get killed off in their first appearance (a la a Mike Hammer best friend), but he turns out to be alive and villainous at the end (his clone was the body dumped), and fights Batman while Manhunter saves the day and dies in the process.
