Anyone planning to check this out? From the promos it seems to be more offensive to straight men than gay men, but that's me... I use deoderant, wear clean clothes and *listen* to my girlfriends (I only have one at a time, thank you very much). When's the hetero-men bashing going to end?? mad ... oh wait, "Striperella" is on TNN...

"Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" is a new makeover show. It features a team of gay men, each with their own specialty (i.e. fashion, home decor etc..) and they're sent out to make over a straight guy (usually for the benefit of the poor woman who has to put up with this slob).

I saw it last night and despite thinking that it'd just be a bunch of queens making fun of some clueless straight guy (well, that was part of it) it was also really heartwarming to me to see straight and gay folk work together at something as a team for the betterment this guy's life. The straight guy was really appreciative, he learned some new things and the gay guys were happy to improve this couple's lives by remaking their home and giving the guy some style.

I'm not kidding -- I really found it kind of sweet and it gives me hope for the future.

The success of "Queer Eye" will no doubt spawn spin-offs, including:

"A Lez Pal for the Straight Gal"

Julia, a self-described "girly girl," is looking forward to her upcoming marriage. Yet she's worried -- she can't, for the life of her, relate to her fiance and his friends on their football nights. What exactly is the difference between a tight end and a wide receiver? And she's worried that once she and her future husband move in together, she'll be baffled at the plethora of tasks around their brand-new house -- chores that might require her to handle some of those sharp, dangerous-looking tools in his toolchest. What's a lady to do?

Enter our panel of lesbian experts! In each episode, they will coach these hapless straight lasses in everything from car and motorcyle repair, to do-it-yourself jobs around the house, to the ins-and-outs of sports, to roughing it in the great outdoors.

"Lez Pal" is sure to be a smash hit!

* * * * * *

Come to think of it, *I* could probably benefit from that show... shocked

I kinda liked it... the blonde-headed queen got on my nerves. I *really* liked the "GROOMING" specialist guy. TRES cute!!

Not too bad. I'd like to see another one but it looks like this was a one time showing for NBC. But Striperella was on right after so that made one hell of a combo to watch.

Leno to get 'Queer Eye' makeover
Monday, August 4, 2003 Posted: 3:30 PM EDT (1930 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Is a "Queer Eye" plus Jay Leno's big chin the right look for good ratings? Television network NBC thinks so.

With new show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" having become a smash hit for the Bravo cable TV channel, Bravo parent NBC said Monday it will bring the show's "Fab Five" makeover artists onto "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" for a special "make-better" session with show host Leno.

Leno's restyling is scheduled for August 14, and a network spokeswoman said NBC would also air a special half-hour episode of "Queer Eye" earlier in the evening.

"Queer Eye," in which five gay men with expertise in grooming, food, fashion, culture and interior design put some style into the appearance and apparel of a heterosexual man, has been a major ratings winner for Bravo, drawing the network's highest audience numbers ever.

An initial repeat of the show on NBC proved to be an average ratings performer, but the hype around "Queer Eye" continues to build in U.S. popular culture since that special broadcast. NBC aims to keep promoting it heavily as interest in the show grows.

While audiences have taken warmly to "Queer Eye," some of the nation's top TV critics have been mixed in their reviews.

"In this long summer of instantly disposable reality TV, cable's Bravo channel manages to break through the pathetic pack by slyly subverting one of the genre's conventions," TV Guide critic Matt Roush wrote in this week's issue. "Yes, the 'fab five' can be bitchy, but as they bond with their subject, there's a lot of heart in the way they root for him."

Washington Post critic Tom Shales took a different tack, though, in his initial review of the show.

"Forced to choose between scorn and condescension, gay people could hardly be blamed for preferring the latter -- and thus might not object to the stereotypes on parade in the series," he said last month.

I read one review that said "QE" was like glastnost between straight and gay folks -- that's kinda how I feel about it.

Has anyone noticed they replaced the "lifestyle" guy after the first or second ep? I wonder what that was about.

And why does the fashion guy always seem front and center? He's the most annoying of them.

'Queer Eye' Taken to Court
Sep 5, 12:11 PM EST

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - More proof that "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" is a pop-culture phenomenon: The show is now the target of a lawsuit.

Blair Boone, who appeared in two early episodes of the Bravo series, is suing the show's producers.

The suit essentially claims that Boone has been made the Pete Best of the show's "Fab Five," the group of gay men who use their expertise in fashion, design, food, grooming and culture to give a straight man a makeover.

Boone is asking for $105,000, which is what he says he would have earned during a "full production year" of "Queer Eye." He earned $6,000 for his two episodes. Had he stayed on the show, he could also have shared in a lucrative book deal the Fab Five recently signed.

"When I see the million-dollar book deal, I have to clench my teeth," Boone tells the New York Post. "That's what I expected to see and be a part of."

Boone was replaced by Jai Rodriguez as the show's culture expert. Boone appeared in two of the first three episodes that aired and was billed as a "guest culture expert" in the end credits.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. (but maybe the details will show differently) btw, I know one of the producers on the show -- from way back when I used to work in movies. It was funny seeing her name in the credits.

"Straight Plan for the Gay Man"

From CNN.com:

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Cable network Comedy Central is planning to turn the make-over hit "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" upside down with a new show called "Straight Plan for the Gay Man."

Debuting in February, the new show will parody the Bravo channel's "Queer Eye" series and male stereotypes in general as a team of straight comedians -- the "Flab 4" -- teaches a succession of gay men how to pass as heterosexuals.

The make-overs include lessons in such areas as spartan home decorating, oafish manners, less-than-fashionable wardrobes, and an overdeveloped ego to mask all personal failings, production executive Lou Wallach told Reuters on Monday.

He said the network is currently producing three hour-long episodes centering on three gay men looking to go straight for a day to satisfy some personal curiosity about life on the "other team."

Jonathan, an upscale fashion salesman seeking greater insight into the lives of blue-collar workers, will try to get a job as a meatpacker. Roger, a yoga instructor who has always wanted to play a round of pickup basketball, will square off in a competitive game of street hoops. And Stephen, an entertainer with lots of female friends, will venture into the hetero club scene to try his luck as a smooth-talking babe magnet.

As the end of each episode, the Flab 4 will accompany their straight-A students to see if they "pass their tests."

The format is a role reversal of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," in which five gay men with expertise in good grooming, food, fashion, culture and interior design come to the aid of a hapless heterosexual slob. The show has drawn the highest audience numbers ever on Bravo, and a half-hour version proved popular on sister broadcast network NBC.

Comedy Central, a Viacom Inc.-owned network that reaches some 84 million homes, is best known for such offerings as the subversive animated comedy "South Park" and the newscast satire "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."

A spokeswoman for NBC and Bravo, which are owned by General Electric Co., said the networks were aware of the plans for the parody show but had no comment. "Queer Eye" already was lampooned in a recent episode of "South Park."

That's funny -- I just did some work for that show (I think it was the opening sequence, but it may have been a promo). While it's a parody, there's something odd about the idea of an openly gay male trying to adopt the mannerisms of a straight man (or I should say that it's odd that it's treated as light entertainment). As open as things may appear from tv, the fact that "playing straight" is still a matter of survival (or denial) for some closeted homosexuals makes the whole project appear insensitive to certain realities.
