The Bgtzlian Legionnaire had not expected a huge fanfare, and in fact when she had contacted Rokk to speak about returning to the group she had specifically asked that it didn’t become some sort of big event. The last few weeks away from the team had helped her clear her head a lot and she knew now it was time to get started back into work; she told Rokk that she could only mope for so long before it became more of a problem than the loss of Jo. Cosmic Boy laughed and told her that she was welcome back whenever she wanted, the team would respect her wishes and she could get back into active duty as soon as Dr Kabbo gave the all clear. Again they shared a laugh – getting a counsellor to clear them for active duty! Ha, how the team had changed and grown in the past few years! There was a slight bitter sweet edge to this laughter but neither mentioned it, they knew each other well enough not to need to.

Rokk was genuinely grateful that Tinya was feeling ready to rejoin the group, they needed her experience and skills he said as Shady had just left to return to Talok viii. He added that he knew he wasn’t the only one that had missed her too. Tinya was grateful that one of her oldest friends was still one of the best people she had ever met to have these potentially awkward conversations with – the universe was a so much a better place just for having Rokk Krinn in it!

Still she was surprised at the amount of her teammates that had turned up to welcome her back. Lydda, Rokk, Reep, Lar, Lu and Kara all tried to hug her at the same time, turning their spontaneous show of affection into something clumsily comedic that they could all laugh about. Tinya was grateful. There were a few unshed tears in various eyes and the laughter helped ease their conversations as they spoke about what she’d missed and what was currently going on.

It took the group several minutes just to leave the northern docking bay as they each wanted to speak to Tinya... to reconnect with their friend. In the end Tinya announced that she was famished and the group made its way through the twisting corridors to the nearest food hall where they sat and spoke for a further two hours. In that time the news of her return had spread and every Legionnaire on the planetoid made their way to the food hall to say ‘hi’ and welcome her back.

Eventually Jan and Lu took Tinya to her new quarters. They were two levels up and 180 degrees around the planetoid from where she had shared an apartment with Jo before. Tinya smiled, though both of her friends could see her trepidation.

“Well...” she said, “Best get moved in or I’ll never get cleared for active duty at this rate. You don’t want me as a squatter ...”

They shared a laugh then Lu and Jan both hugged Tinya before leaving her to get settled into her new quarters. Jan turned back to Tinya just before she could phase through the door and said:

“Actually, there’s a mission of sorts I’m away to lead that I think you may want to be on. The team will be leaving in twenty from the Northern Docking Bay. You won't need to have seen Dr Kabbo to be on it so don't worry, just be there.” Jan smiled and gave Tinya a quick salute before turning and walking down the corridor after Lu. After having spent the morning dealing with Jazmin Cullen and Hadru Jamik and the fall out of their scrap in Shakes Bar two nights ago Jan was happy to have Tinya back. With the two new Legionnaires being busted back into the Academy for two weeks for re-learning as a result of their stunt the team could use the return of a far more level headed member to help keep things calm and operational.

Jan Arrah smiled as he walked down the corridor.

Yargotha City State, Khundia Prime

Inferno, Sandy Anderson of alternate reality Earth, fire generation and manipulation

Sandy Anderson stepped through Henrys’ warp and was immediately aware that the twilit skies of Khundia Prime were more than a poor poetic expression; above her the permanently eclipsed sun was blocked out by a huge dark disc of this world’s huge moon. She had no idea if this was what passed as their daytime or not. She used to hate darkness, actually, it had scared her.... One of the lessons she had learned under iron-britches Duorgo was how to control that fear and take charge of the previously terrifying situation, so even if the rest of her time at Montauk Point was just toffee she knew she could thank being enrolled at the Academy for not freaking out at the prospect of being here on this permanent twilit planet at least.

The air was cold and strangely humid, a thicker atmosphere than Earths’, richer in oxygen too she estimated by the smell, well a pyrokinetic would never grumble about that she thought with a small tight grin. It was just a pity it was so dingy, Sandy had never liked darkness, but she had a natural skill that could banish it if it got too much for her. Small sparks of flame danced across her palms as she thought this.

She had been warped through onto a flat roof terrace that overlooked the mushroom like battle arenas the Khunds called their Challenge Courts. She remembered that the Empires capital city of Yargotha in the trans-coastal mountains was renowned for its huge population and number of challenge courts but she wasn’t sure if there were any other huge conurbations and for a split second she regretted staying in bed just a few weeks prior when the Academy covered the Khundian Empire in their morning class.

While the air smelled of oxygen there was a flat edge that tasted of metals; sadly lifeless. She had come to appreciate the smells of nature while living in the past even though initially it had terrified her. Those smells told her that there was life present. The smell here on Khundia Prime only told her there were machines and weapons...

Sandy Anderson looked around, there was no immediate sign of a stairwell or comfortable way to leave this metal roof garden, and while she had her flight ring she didn’t see any natives soaring through the sky around her so assumed were she to float up here it may just attract too much attention. She wanted to find her friend first before allowing the natives to realise they had a badass human in their midst. Integrated into her belt buckle her Distorter unit would give her enough camouflage, for the short term anyway she hoped.

And, hey, she had survived just fine in the primitive past on Earth so this shouldn’t be too much of a challenge, eh? The Khunds were in the 31st century so how uncivilised could they be?

Despite calling for him on her Flight Ring she had no idea where Gates was and for all her excitement at skipping out on Luornu Durgo-Taine it was starting to annoy her that the Vyrgan wasn’t waiting for her. Trust the bug to be the one that bugged her, she though with a smile. Well, if there was one thing she learned with painful alacrity when she remained in the 20th century it was she needed to find shelter, somewhere safe to call her own... or at least where she could retreat to if need be. She somehow doubted that the Khundian would have a suitable mall for her to use as a base...

Bloody bug!

Private Shuttle currently approaching Xanthu astronomers cluster, Xanthi system, 24 light minutes due galactic East of Xanthu.

Chameleon Girl, Yera Allon of Durla, shape changer
Colossal Boy, Gim Allon of Earth, increase personal size and mass at will

“Your father won’t forgive you, you know that? He looked as if he wanted to slap you as it was when you announced you wanted to leave Star Fleet and return to the Legion, and now you go and do this...”

“Then lucky he doesn’t need to be told we came here first, eh” Gim sounded exasperated as he replied. They had been talking about this for an hour now; he knew his wife could be stubborn but this was getting ridiculous he felt. Star Fleet had accepted his resignation this morning and even allowed it to take effect immediately as he had stated categorically that he was planning on returning to active duty as a Legionnaire. They would no doubt expect something in return from him later on down the line, he knew how the senior officer’s minds operated. But still...Yera had agreed that it was time to get back to work so here they were in the small ship that Gim’s mother had loaned them to go to Legion World. Gim hadn’t told her he had different short term plans.

Gim didn’t comment as Yera went into another tirade about the friends they were letting down by coming all the way out here, nearly six hours travel from where they should be right now. He did though find it a little bit ironic that Yera was pressing for them to return to active Legion duty when she was the one who had pressed for them to take leave. Something else elses, he thought to himself, were often better if they stayed unsaid.

After she had finished speaking they remained silent for the next few minutes as Gim carefully followed the beacon trail that Thom had laid on for them. Yera stood behind her husband and placed her hands gently on his shoulders. If she didn’t know that he needed to concentrate so hard on navigating their craft she would have half jokingly pretended to strangle him.

Yargotha City State, Khundia Prime

Inferno, Sandy Anderson of alternate reality Earth, fire generation and manipulation

At the time of Sandy Anderson’s arrival on Khundia Prime the majority of the Khundian Battle Brigade had been summoned on an urgent mission to the far settlements of Acchuuter.

The Acchuuter settlements had long been a problem for the ruling warlord elite of the Khundian Empire. The system was outrageously mineral rich, having two planets blessed with breathable atmospheres and drinkable water though currently no native life had been found on either, as well as five jovian class element rich outer worlds, three asteroid belts and as this surprising system was on the very outer edge of the Galactic southern edge of the Empire there were no competing empires, federation or planetary governing bodies representing other species, cultures or worlds likely to challenge the Khundian Empires’ rights to plunder it to their hearts’ content. The Khunds felt entirely safe that the chances of a territorial scuffle over the amazing resources this system offered would be negligible.

Still… the system had long been plagued by ghost stories and very few sapient un-bonded workers chose to serve there. Consequently, the expense of what should be a relatively easy resource mining operation was almost quadruple what would be expected, the quality of staff was not as consistent as the Empire would like and the serious accident and death rate of staff was eight times the current acceptable norm at just over 40% of all workers.

A little under a standard month ago a mining vessel in the asteroid field closest to this small white star found something that challenged the Khunds understanding of their territory. They found an ancient building buried under the debris that littered the asteroids surface. The single story building appeared to have three meter wide hexagonal entrances and exits, twisting courtyards with signs of what could be thought of as seating structures that resembled curved benches, and perhaps most importantly of all, an active cloaking technology that kept it all hidden until a manned mining vehicle had actually tore through an acre wide section of the structure and destroyed whatever was providing the disguise enabling force field.

Suddenly the ghost stories didn’t sound so outrageous.

A team of xeno-archaeologists had been ordered to investigate the Acchuuter settlements as a priority under the authority of the Emperors own beacon and, of course, the Dead Brain had been informed. The stumpy Khundian warlord kept an eye on the situation and had his team of meta warriors ready to visit this outer edge of their civilisation if it was felt that they were needed.

Three days ago the xeno-archaeologists and their security detail had vanished.

Less than a standard day ago twenty one mining and support vessels – all those within two and a half AUs from the xeno-archaeology team’s base – had reported strange signals sweeping across their EM comms... messages that gave a warning in all of the diverse languages currently being used within the Empire and neighbouring systems: their entire civilisation would soon be swept aside in a fiery blaze that emanated from the past.

At this point the Dead Brain decided it was time that his Battle Brigade be mobilised into action.

Had Sandy known about this she would have honked with laughter.

Had the Khundian Emperor known that she had just arrived within his territory unannounced he’d have had her atomised on the spot. And probably the surrounding fifty square klicks just to be certain he had disposed of her.

Unfortunately for Sandy, the whole Empire was away to learn in a most explosive manner, and as a result events would unfold that would alter the destiny of all 300 billion beings that currently lived within the Khundian Empire. And it would all start in under a minute with a dropped Sweet Schlarchroll pate onto a crowded street within the bustling market that Sandy Anderson was currently wandering through, her having a comedy prat fall worthy of the most accomplished Vaudeville performer… and a summons to the Challenge Courts to answer for serious crimes against the personage of a renowned vicious warrior.

Legion World, Sol system, 2.5 light minutes due galactic north of Saturn.

Duplicate Girl - Deputy Leader - Luornu Durgo of Carggg, can create multiple identical duplicates of herself
Timber Wolf, Brin Londo of Zuun, enhanced strength, speed, agility, reflexes and senses
Shield, Laurel Kent of Earth, physical invulnerability, tactile psychometry
M’Windaji, Gahaji of Kiringyaga, super tracker, carries the Ruby of Life that allows tactile transformative magicks
Kinetix, Zoe Saugin of Aleph, telekinetic animation

Brin liked Gahaji.

When Brin had asked Gahaji if he could help neither had any idea where it would take them though the young tracker from the remote Kiringyaga colony world had accepted the challenge with a smile and even apologised for not thinking of offering his support sooner. They agreed during the nights celebrations to toast Harmonia’s leaving the Leader post and welcome Jan back into it they would meet two days later at the southern docking bay to... ahem...borrow a cruiser for the search.

Brin knew that Harmonia had introduced the senior team to lead missions and in his acceptance speech Jan had agreed with the idea so, in a misguided effort to spare the senior team from an open ended mission that was probably going to be viewed as a vanity project, he decided to go this one alone... or at least with as little intervention from the powers that be. Brin called Laurel and asked her to meet them in the southern docking bay. He had a surprise for her, he said. Using his flight ring to deactivate himself, Gahaji and Laurel from active duty he planned that the three of them would leave for an unannounced break, and none of the seniors would need to intervene and waste their time.

With three Legionnaires suddenly coming off active duty at the same moment Luornu Durgo, who was at that point on Mission Monitor Board duty, realised that they were away to strike out on their own without official sanction. She had been the headmistress at Montauk Point Academy for long enough to see what was happening; she had witnessed every trick in the book when it came to students – and occasional tutors - sneaking out to play. Duplicating, she left one of her selves behind and strode out of the Mission Monitor control room towards the southern docking bay, Brin having been daft enough to announce through his flight ring where the three of them were leaving...

As she reached the bay Luornu could hear voices.

“... could help you.”

“Zoe, no, please... We can manage ourselves.”

“Hey, Gahaji, I remember your face from the Academy when we were stealthing out so don’t lie now, okay? Anyway, I thought we were all friends... ?”

Lu strode into the bay, her heels clicking a fierce beat, where the two former students suddenly looked very guilty as they stepped away from each other and turned to face her. She smiled, though there was little warmth in her show of teeth, instead it was closer to a challenge.

“Ms Durgo... ahh, we were just...”

“Yes Zoe? What were you just doing?”

“They were helping me help Laurel Lu so stop picking on the kids. If you want to bawl out someone I’m up here... come join. Or leave us alone, whichever you want...” Brin Londo’s deep voice echoed as it came through the cruisers’ speakers. Luornu Dorgo kept the same challenging smile on her face as she looked to the cruisers commend deck and gave him an ironic salute.

“Well... kids.... shall we go see what the always helpful Mr Londo is up to now?”

The two former academy students exchanged a concerned glance and hurried to keep up as Duplicate Girl strode determinedly towards the anti-grav lift point.

So these are the opening stories - Jan away to lead a mission out that doesn't need Tinya to be fit for work, Inferno and Gates in the Khundian Empire, Gim and Yera visiting Nura and Thom, and Lu alongside Brin leading a team to track down Laurel's missing father. Hope you enjoy!

Private Shuttle currently approaching Xanthu astronomers cluster, Xanthi system, 24 light minutes due galactic East of Xanthu.

Chameleon Girl, Yera Allon of Durla, shape changer
Colossal Boy, Gim Allon of Earth, increase personal size and mass at will

Yera knew that he was fully aware of how worried she was about his sudden decision to leave Star Fleet and return to the Legion with her, and then to almost immediately announce that before they returned to the team on Legion World they needed to visit Thom and Nura on Xanthu which was very out of character for him. Gim could make lists of the lists he had, he was so organised and prepared at all times so there were never unexpected detours like this... well, Yera thought, this was the exception that would prove the rule.

Yera was well aware that her husband would never lie to her, it was simply constitutionally impossible for him to do that to her or to anyone else. When Gim said they needed to delay returning to Legion World as they had to go to Xanthu then they had to go... despite it frustrating her that he didn’t give her anymore information. As they approached the astronomy satellite that the two former Legionnaires they were visiting now called home the comms unit bleeped and a woman’s voice split the silence.

“Gim Allon, hey there big boy! What took you so long to get here? Is the lovely Yera with you?”

“I certainly am Nura, so don’t get any ideas, this big boy of mine is not for sharing!” Yera joked. The Durlan had always admired Nura as she believed the Naltorian was one of the smartest and kindest Legionnaires, not that that stopped Dream Girl from having her fun by play-flirting with the guys at every opportunity. Yera knew she could trust Gim regardless of temptation so had never felt insecure or threatened around Nura, in fact she found it amusing. Unlike a couple of the other girls, she thought to herself...

“Splendid! We’re really looking forward to seeing you two. Thom’s getting the docking link ready so see you in two minutes... Toodle-ooh gorgeous people. *Mwah*!”

“See you soon Nura.”

“Yeah, bye Nura...”

After the comm-link had finished Yera asked Gim the question that had been been bouncing unresolved between them for the last hour one more time.

“So... big boy...” Yera’s tone was not as flattering as Nura’s had been as she had called her husband that, “Again, why are we out here at the edge of civilised space visiting your two old friends? Hmmm?”

Gim looked down at the controls before replying. Chameleon Girl knew her husband well enough to know he was trying to think of a way to reply that would not involve him lying to her. Usually she found this very endearing, as an actress she was paid to lie and was considered excellent at it. Today though her husband’s vacillations made her antennae ache! After what felt like ten solid minutes but was probably closer to ten long seconds Gim Allon looked up at his wife and replied:

“Well, lovely Yera...” his turn to mimic Dream Girl’s call, “Nura contacted me and said she’d had a vision... and... well they need to borrow us for a day or so.”

“And what else?”

“Umm... that was it really.”

“Grrrife! You are so frustrating sometimes Gim Allon...” She slapped her palm against her forehead and angrily sat on the command chair next to her husband as he flew their small vessel in towards the docking bay.

Yargotha City State, Khundia Prime
Inferno, Sandy Anderson of alternate reality Earth, fire generation and manipulation

Sandy Anderson lay on her back and breathed deeply.

Only a minute ago... just sixty short seconds ... she had climbed down from the flat roofed building into the bustling market place below, eager to get started on finding that pesky bug Gates .

Fifty seconds ago she had slipped, her foot sliding across some disgusting looking piece of dropped food that felt like slime covered worms.

Forty seconds ago she had realised that the nutter in the bad armour that was shouting in her face was actually challenging her to combat after she had landed, quite unceremoniously, upon him causing him to spill some vile looking food stuffs onto the two barely clothed women that tagged behind him. The sprockin’ idiot didn’t realise that she was wearing a distorter and wasn’t actually what he expected... if he carried on the way he was going he was in for a total surprise!

Thirty seconds ago she had been transported to this bloody big dome by the phycho cyborg snapping some weird tube under her – like was it Boom Tube tech, thought Sandy, confusing the information she had kind of learned at the Academy with the situation around her. The teleporter made a booming noise anyway, so to her mind that was close enough. She arrived after the uncomfortable teleport to find at least a hundred of those floating watching holo-transmitters all jostling for a prime place to capture the best view of the fight as it happened. The nutter before her was obviously a popular fighter!

Twenty seconds ago the muscle-bound psycho had strode around the circle of the Challenge Court outer edge with his arms up, as if appealing to the crowds. His rough accent and hoarse voice didn’t stop Sandy’s flight ring from translating his words and her ear plug from playing this to her. She was particularly upset when he said she would not be good enough to make him break sweat. Boy, was he in for a shock, she thought as she cautiously approached him.

Ten seconds ago his attack began and Sandy very nearly didn’t survive. His arm extended and the skin folded back to reveal what could only be called row after row of razor blade, which with an almost casual wave of his arm spun through the air towards her. The combat training from the academy kicked in and saved her life as she dived aside into a roll, bashing her back on the clear screen that kept the combatants within the Challenge Court and knocked the wind out of her.

And here she was, lying on her back, breathing hard and wishing the damn bug had died when they were in the 21st century and she had been there to dance on his ugly grave. He deserved that at very least for getting her into this situation. But before she could get her just revenge on Gates she would have to find a way out of here that wouldn’t involve her being in whatever the Khundian equivalent was to a body bag....

Legion World, Sol system, 2.5 light minutes due galactic north of Saturn.
Duplicate Girl – Deputy Leader - Luornu Durgo of Carggg, can create multiple identical duplicates of herself
Timber Wolf, Brin Londo of Zuun, enhanced strength, speed, agility, reflexes and senses
Shield, Laurel Kent of Earth, physical invulnerability, tactile psychometry
M’Windaji, Gahaji of Kiringyaga, super tracker, carries the Ruby of Life that allows tactile transformative magicks
Kinetix, Zoe Saugin of Aleph, telekinetic animation
Academy Student - The Voice, Thelma Haruth of the Sen Salgowyn Beta Chorus Collective, vocally induced hypnotic manipulation

Brin had to admit to himself that he was a little surprised at how supportive Luornu had been.

He knew his invulnerable girlfriend was still slightly in awe of Luornu Durgo-Taine, Laurel had told him one night that the Cargggite Legionnaire was perhaps the mentally toughest person she had ever met. Despite not voting for her Laurel believed that Duplicate Girl fully deserved her Deputy Leader role as she was an inspiration to the newer team members.

After accepting the leaders post Element Lad had suggested, and all of the senior Team had agreed, that all full missions required a minimum of six on a team. So, with Brin and Laurel and Gahaji, Zoe had invited herself and Lu had interrupted and taken charge, it meant at least one more was needed. The Deputy Leader had officially sanctioned the mission and after a moment’s thought decided to call for a volunteer on the flight ring comms relay from amongst the Alpha class of the Academy students currently on Legion World. Thelma Haruth, Voice, responded almost immediately so Luornu told her to get down to the docking bay and ready for a mission with the main team. The comms relay broadcast a few choice expressions from other students that had not replied quickly enough to be picked and with a big grin on her face Duplicate Girl gave Brin a wink before reminded them that they had to will the comms relay to stop once they had entered into a conversation. Their embarrassed apologies made Brin snort a laugh.

“Me and a bunch of Academy kids, what more could I ask for?” Duplicate Girl said to herself after she switched off the comms channel.

“Hey, I’d left the Academy years before you ever got involved Lu so don’t try to pull that one, eh?” Timber Wolf growled as he spoke.

“Easy Brin...” Laurel gently spoke, putting her hand on his shoulder as she did.

M’Windaji interrupted, “Laurel, have you got anything of your dad’s that I can use to get his impression? “

As the young tracker and the invulnerable girl went to find an article he could use to focus his abilities upon Brin hopped over to the three Luornu’s that were setting up the astro-nav guide system, double checking supplies and life support. He had already checked the cruiser’s status before Duplicate Girl had arrived so was confident she wouldn’t find anything lacking.

“Y’know.... I still find it odd seeing more than two at a time of you Lu... “

Two of her three sister-selves turned and smiled at him, “Don’t tell anyone, but so do I Brin. Even Brainy isn’t sure what triggered the boost to my abilities but we’re not complaining... it makes these pre-flight checks a lot quicker.” She smiled as she spoke, and Brin didn’t want to tell her he had already made sure the cruiser was up to scratch... sometimes it wasn’t worth saying anything, he thought, not while Lu was actually being pleasant to him and helping Laurel anyway.

“Yeah... thanks for helping us out. Laurel has been holding it together but sometimes... well... it’s her father that’s missing and he was the only family she ever really had. I didn’t want to trouble the team by requesting a full mission status to go look for him...” The Zuunian Legionnaire said. One of Lu’s selves turned to face him, a small smile on her face.

“She’s one of us Brin, we should have done this before. And after the trouble you two got into last time maybe it’s best we do it properly, eh? But don’t worry, we’ll find out where her dad is, I promise you... though whatever the outcome you know she’s going to need us, and you in particular Brin.”

The lithe student, Voice, appeared several moments later, excitement making her face glow as she rushed into the docking bay. As she joined them on board the mark ix cruiser Lu announced that they were ready to leave.

Xanthu astronomers cluster, Xanthi system, 24 light minutes due galactic East of Xanthu.
Chameleon Girl, Yera Allon of Durla, shape changer
Colossal Boy, Gim Allon of Earth, increase personal size and mass at will
Star Boy (Parental leave), Thomas Kallor of Xanthu, induce mass
Dream Girl (Parental leave), Nura Nal of Naltor, precognition

The lights in the docking link that swung between their craft to the observatory were out so Yera took the lead. As a Durlan she naturally scanned her surroundings constantly with a radar like sense that informed her shape changing ability. She would usually ignore these sensory perceptions and allow her subconscious to hold the images her antennae relayed but now she concentrated on this perception and easily navigated her way along the corridor. Behind her Gim concentrated on listening to her foot steps and clumsily followed. A doorway opened in front of them and the bright light momentarily stunned them, until Thom Kallor stepped into it and waved a gadget at the floor. Twin strip lights running along both sides of the link bridge flickered into life.

“Sorry, been meaning to fix that for ages now...” The Xanthuan’s deep voice was thick with apology.

Yera stepped up to him and hugged Thom warmly quickly followed by her husband who held his hand out to shake. They followed the former Legionnaire Star Boy into a clinically white hall way and up a flight of stairs into a huge open plan room that was dominated by a sky light above them that covered at least half of the top part of the observatory. The stars and distant nebulae appeared clear enough to pluck from the heavens.

In the centre of the wide open space Nura Nal stood next to a slightly raised podium obviously frustrated by the mechanism that hovered in the air before her.

“Oh dammit! I was hoping to have fixed this by the time you arrived. I’m sorry guys. C’mere...” She walked quickly towards them with her arms outstretched, leaving the bothersome machine behind. After hugging them both fiercely she asked how their journey had been and offered them refreshments. Yera knew that Dream Girl was up to something though couldn’t quite make up her mind what so before they could be overtaken by pleasant chit chat decided to ask outright.

“What’s going on? Why did you bring us here Nura?”

“Oh? Didn’t your handsome husband tell you? Hmm? Gim, perhaps it’s time you let your marvellous wife know why you are here, don’t you think?” Nura Nal’s smile as she spoke brightened the room.

Yargotha City State, Khundia Prime

Inferno, Sandy Anderson of alternate reality Earth, fire generation and manipulation

As the Khund jumped towards Sandy all her frustration, fear and anger erupted out of her in an enormous fireball that quite literally blew the Challenge Court’s walls out and roof off. The resulting blast was seen for many miles around and the deafening boom rolled across the massive cityscape and echoed throughout the built up canyons for minutes afterwards.

The force of the blast blew the hundred or so flying cameras that the Khunds used to monitor activity in the Chalenge Courts across the dark sky, several dozen smashing through nearby Court domes and into the highly built up residential areas that surrounded this zone.

The Champion of the Challenge Court who had successfully fought and survived over a thousand confrontations and battles prior to meeting Sandy Anderson was immolated beyond recognition. Sandy didn’t even notice as she used the chaos and confusion that resulted from her pyrotechnic blast to follow her primal instincts and run away. The smoke and debris hid her as she leapt off the smouldering remains of the Court floor, and the crowds below didn’t even notice her as she fell, they were too busy finding shelter for themselves as molten plexi-glass and steel rained down upon them.

While the poor residents in the market places and slums around the Challenge Courts hid or fled, the fireball was like a flaming beacon to the political forces that surrounded the Emperor and they all saw it as a sign that the prophecies that had been heard on the Acchuuter settlements were away to pass.

The Emperor at that moment was on a private island out in the Sea of the Tears Of Our Victorious Dead being massaged by four of his personal favourite wives when a messenger holo from his personal secretary interrupted to tell him the news.

The fireball in the heart of the Challenge Court district signalled the start of a battle the Khundian Emperor knew he had to win. He was well aware that if he did not put an immediate end to this situation he would be seen as weak and was unlikely to survive the coming Winter Season. The Emperor pushed his wives off of his body and sat up. He knew he had to be seen to act, and he had to act quickly. Striding naked through to his armoury the Emperor called for a conversation with the Dead Brain. In a fierce but very brief discussion he insisted the little misshapen leader of the Battle Brigade send some of his much-vaunted meta’s to assist as a matter of great urgency otherwise the Emperor would see to it that there would be a sudden need for a meta-cull amongst his warriors.

Starting with the Dead Brain and his misfit team if this situation wasn't sorted out within a day.

My interest is certainly piqued Harbi! You have four interesting missions starting up here and I am very excited to see what will happen next!

Glad to see Tinya Gim and Yera back I was afraid they would be absent for a while! Thom and Nura too.

Looking forward to seeing Zoe and Thelma in their mission as well! And as always loved the little bits like Lu and Brin and the Academy kids joke, Lu being supportive, Sandy wishing Gates were dead, Zoe forcing herself onto the mission, Gim not being able to lie.

Brainiac 5’s Laboratory, Legion World, Sol system, 2.5 light minutes due galactic north of Saturn.

Brainiac 5 – Legion World manager, Professor Querl Dox of Colu, 12th level Super Intelligence
Danielle Foccart –Kid Computo – IT support

“Danielle, what you are telling me is incredible! Are you certain?”

“Of course Professor Dox,” the girl was watching her fingers as they moved in front of her as if she was playing an invisible harp, “Henry is counting the days until the new Time Institute activates the Time Beacon on Naltor. Henry was talking to his future self about it the other night though they haven’t said anything since... I think they’re avoiding it now as I told him I heard them discuss it...”

“What did he say Danielle?” Querl scratched his chin absent-mindedly as he asked.

“He lied to me Professor Dox. I’ve heard all of their conversation...”

“Oh? Could you replay them for me Danielle, please.”

“Of course...” She glanced over towards a data-unit on a shelf on the Laboratory

“Wait... are you certain the security system is not monitoring us?”

Danielle smiled and nodded. As she did voices poured from the aether, the conversations Danielle had heard were replayed for the Coluan to interpret. He concentrated on the job at hand, Henry had definitely been communicating with a being called Adym... and they seemed particularly interested in the Time Institute’s next beacon, a miracle that Rond Vidar’s research had made possible that coordinated the travel between different temporal points without running the risk of accidentally crossing over into or being interfered with by an alternate reality time stream. As time travel was heavily monitored and regulated thankfully the Beacon’s role was relatively simple. All time travel was authorised through the Time Institute so Professor Dox was certain he could look into what had been happening lately, there may be helpful hints of any activity that may benefit this Captain Adym.

The conversations Danielle shared with the Coluan genius were banal for the most part, it seemed Henry reported all of his warping activity, but with the mention of Sandy Anderson requesting travel to be with the cross dimensional Vyrgan called Gates there was a sudden increase in this trans-temporal chatter.

“What was that Danielle? Re-play that section please.” Brainiac looked up as he spoke. The voices stopped and after a two second delay restarted.

The voice of the mysterious Captain Adym echoed through the otherwise silent laboratory again. “...Are you sure she is not involved? The Acchuuter settlers will disrupt our plans if we...”

“She requested transport to co-ordinates on Khundia Prime, so of course I obliged her Adym, though not quite to the right place...she is in the central Challenge Quadrant of Yargotha. I have little doubt she will not evade a challenge...” Henry gave a small cold laugh.

“You cannot allow the Legionnaires to follow her. The coherence of our time stream depends upon it. If that damn Coluan gets anywhere near there we will lose everything!”

“... I cannot deny him transit if he requests it; the core personality remains true to that despite your program modifications...”

“You don’t have to be quite so accurate though. I ensured that much...” Adym spoke abruptly.

Querl spoke, “Enough Danielle. I need to process this before we go any further. Please don’t share this with anyone else until I’ve given this my full attention. We can continue in 3/48th’s if that is acceptable for you?”

Danielle nodded and left the Coluan genius alone to ruminate on the information she had just shared. She had wanted to speak with Jacques but as he was off base she was glad she had chosen Professor Dox to discuss this with. Danielle Foccart knew that even the AI’s on Legion World respected his intelligence!

Inferno, Sandy Anderson of alternate reality Earth, fire generation and manipulation

Sandy ran.

She used every trick she could think of to avoid people, evade the floating cameras and escape from her present situation.

Within minutes of the challenge court dome exploding there were hundreds of flying vehicles in the air that she could only imagine were Khundian militia. The drivers appeared to be part of the machines that twirled in the air and shone spot lights onto any citizen they saw below them. The rough questioning that followed these scenes proved they were not taking a gentle approach. Sandy hid when she heard the roar above her and ran when she didn’t. The flying hunters reminded her of giant mosquitoes as they buzzed around, zigzagging their way through the cityscape. She hated mosquitoes!

The population appeared to be in uproar, gangs of armoured Khunds were setting up barricades and looting was very obviously happening around her as Sandy ran. She had to get away, find Gates, kick his butt and find out what he needed her for. Until then though she needed to keep moving! The towering buildings around her appeared to be locked and despite her best efforts she couldn’t find a way in. She was considering using her pyrokinesis to blast her way into one though suspected that the flying machines that were swarming around the city would be looking out for any sudden temperature spike, and in the twilit city her fire would definitely be noticed as it burned through a door.

She was in a side alley hiding underneath a metal awning when an otherwise invisible side door crept ajar and a hand appeared beckoning her in. As the door was only open a few inches she couldn’t see what or who was inside but the sudden approaching drone of one of the mosquito machines made her decision easier as she dived towards the door, pulled it open and dived in before she was caught.

Colossal Boy, Gim Allon of Earth, increase personal size and mass at will
Star Boy (Parental leave), Thomas Kallor of Xanthu, mass induction
Dream Girl (Parental leave), Nura Nal of Naltor, precognition

Gim Allon blushed before he replied.

“Spit it out Allon...” Yera’s tone of voice was flat and her confusion very apparent.

“Yera, seven years ago today we were married in a ceremony that we held in private and... well with your return ...and us... we’re better than ever, so... well... I want to reaffirm our vows and Nura and Thom kindly offered to host the ceremony here...”

Yera Allon was stunned. She didn’t quite know what to say at all as her mind whirred through the agonisingly slow journey here in a modified shuttle craft. Her husband, the most honest and trustworthy person she had ever met, had somehow managed to keep this from her despite her badgering, nagging and complaining for the whole slow journey... and she hadn’t suspected a single thing! Perhaps she wasn’t the only thespian in the family after all...

“I’d been thinking of it for a few weeks and then Nura called to tell me she had foreseen it happening here, so y’see I didn’t lie... not really....when I said we were coming here because of Nura's vision.”

Yera walked up to her husband and pulled him into a tight embrace.

“I will Gim Allon, I love you.”
“Love you too darling, everyday.”

“It’s okay everyone, you can come out now.” Nura said to the empty room around them. As she did a holo veil started to fade and there before them stood a mix of Gim’s family and friends from Star Fleet, Yera’s cousin Nidra alongside several people she had worked with on holo-productions through the years, a couple of Science Police officers, the Amazer’s from Xanthu and several Legionnaires. Everyone cheered and clapped and approached the couple to congratulate and hug them.

Element Lad, Phantom Girl, Sun Boy, Thunder, Mon El, Chameleon Boy, Wildfire, Dawnstar, Dr Shakespeare, Ferro and Titan mingled with the crowd chatting to Marte Allon the former President of Earth as easily as they did with the costume director from a holo-soap that Yera had starred in for a couple of episodes. As the guests all chatted with each other Gim and Yera were led to a side room where after being given flutes of champagne were told that Thom was to act as the Groom’s Man while Nura planned on revelling in being the Matron of Honour. Neither complained.

Marte Allon popped her head in, tears very visible in her eyes, and said that this time she would have a front row seat.

Yera couldn't stop giggling.

Querl knew that Harmonia would understand Sign Language.

As they discussed the unexpected introduction of the Quantum-Shine Effect on their latest temporal experiment he casually positioned her into a corner where he could be sure they were not being monitored. Her eyes glanced at his fingers as he started to spell out the words he had desperately needed to say and with a slight nod she acknowledged her understanding.

<as suspected Henry’s programming has been tampered with, I assume when he opened the giant warps for the starbust bandits>
he glanced down at his fingers while continuing to talk about the S’junju Principle and how he suspected there was a work-around solution that might aid their research. His fingers continued to tell another story.

<Adym has taken active interest in where we are going>

Harmonia interrupted, saying she was sure she had read an obscure thesis that mentioned the 28th century engineer Flora Maginty- Gollech had also tried a similar experiment... while she too signed something totally different.

<Do you want me to contact him? He must wonder...> Months ago Harmonia had admitted to Querl and Reep that a rogue Time Agent calling himself Captain Adym had contacted her after the destruction of Titan and had tried to blackmail her into spying for his organisation. She had brushed his threats off though knew better than to totally dismiss them so made sure the Legion were aware of her situation.

<No. You need to keep Henry busy so Danielle, Jacques, Kara and I can investigate>

<Could this be a double bluff? Can Adym know you are aware of this? It may be a trap... >

<Probably> Both conversations paused.

Harmonia started to speak about the Fermento Axiom and how if she could work around the degradation of the electron spin once the Quantum-Shine started to take hold... as her fingers sprung back into life.

<I will inform Jan and Reep - they should know. If you want anything else please tell me>

<Thank you Harmonia>

Wow! Jan's mission and Gim's secret was a fun little surprise! And very romantic as well, that was a wonderful little piece.

And the plot thickens, interesting that Gates and Inferno's adventures may soon intersect with Captain Adym...

Xanthu astronomers cluster, Xanthi system, 24 light minutes due galactic East of Xanthu.

Dream Girl (Parental leave), Nura Nal of Naltor, precognition
Phantom Girl, Tinya Wazzo of Bgtzl Dimension, intangibility

The ceremony was short but beautiful.

The Tribune of Xanthu himself officiated, a beatific smile on his holo-face throughout. Afterwards the majority of the guests joined Gim and Yera on the upper observation deck for a simple meal and some rather risqué speeches from both Gim and Yera’s friends and families that made everyone laugh, grimace, cheer and congratulate the happy couple in equal measure. Gim was especially grateful there were no camera’s nearby after Sun Boy had finished recounting his tale of their first time in space dock after a good will tour of the Hercules Nebulae Settlements.... Yera didn’t look at Gim though had wide eyes and a particularly mischievous smile on her face by the end of it. Several guests laughed though the majority politely clapped and wished for the next speaker to hurry up and add something more repeatable in polite company to the proceedings.

Tinya sat downstairs, having made an excuse that she wanted to contact her mother as she had promised she would check in with her once settled back into Legion World. She had no intentions of speaking to her mother though, instead she sat quietly on a bench and looked out at the tips of a distant nebulae and let her mind wander. She knew that she had to be here, Gim was one of her... and Jo’s... oldest friends. She had so many happy memories of Gim she could share but each of them included Ultra Boy and she wasn’t ready to open up that far quite yet. When she thought about it in the last twelve years she doubted she had went on more than a handful of missions with the team without her Rimborian boyfriend there. It was a shock as she consciously realised she would never have that again. Behind her she heard footsteps. Without looking she knew it was Nura.

“Here Tinya, some Xanthui champagne...” The Naltorian handed her a flute of pale sparkling liquid.

Tinya nodded her thanks and turned back to look at the cosmic sights before them.

“This place is quite literally awesome Nura. You and Thom have a beautiful home.”

“Thank you Tinya, though it’s the views that make it.”

The two woman sat in silence for several moments before Tinya asked, “You not drinking Nura?”

Nura Nal patted her abdomen. “She doesn’t like alcohol it seems. The once I tried... we’d only been here 18 hours and were at Thom’s parent’s home and well... it got messy... explosively messy...” she started to chuckle. “Our daughter doesn’t approve of her mother drinking any alcohol it seems.” She laughed at the memory and Tinya laughed along with her.

“So... it’s a girl? Congratulations!”

“Yeah, Thom is over the moon about it. We’ve been discussing names, but you know Xanthuian’s can be so conservative about it... he seriously suggested Matilda! Can you believe it? Said it was his grandmother’s name.” They chuckled together again.

The silence sat between them after that for a few more moments before Tinya turned to her and asked what she had wanted to say for weeks.

“Nura, I know you can’t change what happened but... what did you see about Jo.. y’know, the day he died... what did you foresee?”

There was a moment’s pause before Nura turned to look at Tinya.

“I saw the universe going up in flames unless Brainy could be saved that day. Everything else... Jo’s and Salu’s deaths... the horror of their deaths was... oh Tinya it was the hardest decision of my life! I knew that if Brainy doesn’t get to Khundia Prime in time we’ll all burn. All of us! I knew he had to be saved or the consequences would be so much worse... and they were pretty bloody awful anyway. I’m so, so sorry Tinya, if I could have done anything differently... the joys of precognition, eh?”

She gave a choked laugh and turned to face Tinya, though before Phantom Girl could reply Nura continued:

“You need to make sure Brainy reaches Khundia Prime and meets with that stumpy little Warlord friend of his and the mad Khundian Emperor, okay Tinya? The team is going to be pretty busy there as there are threats flying in all directions... through space and also through time as well, though don’t let Brainy forget his handheld chronal analysing doo-hickery machine okay?” She smiled as she said it and Tinya smiled in acknowledgement. They both loved Querl Dox as a brother but acknowledged he was the ultimate ‘Boy with a New Techy-Toy’ and it was impossible to keep up with his latest invention.

“I think this little bundle of joy is affecting my precognition...” Nura patted her stomach gently, “... I can see things so much clearer... You will all be leaving soon... an hour or less in case you want to pop back upstairs and chat to the others for a while. Though please persuade Thom to stay ...please, if he goes he won’t come back.” Her eyes were looking at the floor as she spoke and Tinya was given a rare glimpse of the strain her precognitive friend was feeling. Phantom Girl was very aware that her usually extremely confident team mate had not quite made eye contact since being asked about the day Jo was killed, almost as if Nura were embarrassed, or scared, by this conversation.

Without stopping to think Tinya hugged Nura tightly.

“We’ll make sure Querl gets to Khundia Prime in time Nura, I promise. We’re Legionnaires, we get the job done.”

Legion World, Sol system, 2.5 light minutes due galactic north of Saturn.

Brainiac 5 – Legion World manager, Professor Querl Dox of Colu, 12th level intelligence
Andromeda, Kara Zor-El of Krypton, incredible strength, speed, stamina, senses, laser vision, space flight, invulnerability
Invisible Kid, Jacques Foccart of Earth, invisibility
Danielle Foccart –Kid Computo – Technical support - technopathic communication and control over advanced technology

Querl had casually asked Kara if she fancied a trip to Earth with him and she had eagerly agreed. With Laurel and Cece off base she was planning on hitting the gym and maybe volunteering to take over Monitor Board duty, but another wander down the Thames with Querl would be so much more fun! Querl assured her that there were no river walks planned this time, though it would be nice to speand a little time together. He said they were taking Danielle back to her parents for a visit and he wanted to double check some readings of her technopathic abilities while they were down there under less stressful circumstances as he had a theory regarding the Computo matrix’s triggers. Kara sighed though smiled straight away after.

At the Northern Docking bay Jaques Foccart was already onboard the mark ix cruiser readying the craft for leaving. Danielle sat in the Command deck smiling. She had established before boarding that this vessel was perfectly adequate for their journey and found it amusing that her brother wanted to double check everything by hand. How inefficient, she thought.

Within two minutes of Brainiac 5 and Andromeda joining them onboard the cruiser they were out of the docking bay and en route to Earth. They were two minutes from the plexi-screen that surrounded Jacques and Danielle’s home planet when Brainiac 5 asked Danielle if they were okay. When the young girl nodded her affirmation the Coluan called Kara and Jacques over and started to speak.

“We are not going to Earth. We do not need to check Danielle in her home environment, in fact I strongly believe she is better off on Legion World. What we do need though is to get to the Khundian Empire and investigate the Acchuuter settlements. Apologies for the subterfuge though unfortunately it appears that Legion World has been infiltrated. I’m sorry to say that Henry’s program has been corrupted by the Black Ops time agent known as Captain Adym. We need to discover what they were trying to hide from us as a matter of great urgency.”

Jacques bitterly complained that his sister should not be with them as she had no combat experience. Querl replied softly that he would personally protect her, though Danielle was needed as she could prevent Henry and Captain Adym from locating them through their technology and perhaps monitor any communications. Danielle nodded as Querl spoke and afterwards put her hand in her brothers to reassure him.

“Do you want me to race on ahead and check it out Querl?” Kara asked.

“No, these worlds revolve around a red star, and whilst the modifications I made to the force field technology in your belt should negate its effect on your metabolism we’d best continue on together just in case. This will be the first time it is tested in the field.”

Without another word Querl reset the nav-com’s destination and punched the execute button. In a blur they warped to many times light speed towards the distant colony on the fringes of the Khundian Empire.
