Here's a brief interview with Dan DiDio at Newsarama: http://newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26933 Nothing really new here, except maybe the revelation that we really have Paul Levitz to thank (or to blame) for the reboot. Still, it's worth bringing to your attention.

DiDio told the Wizard story in Baltimore before the book came out, so it wasn't new, but that doesn't mean it wasn't worth repeating. Thanks for the link!
It's good to see the book's still getting pushed.

I actually figured that Levitz was a moving force behind the new Legion. I'm guessing that sales were at the point of "reboot or nothing". I still say that if this version doesn't succeed, there isn't going to be a Paul Levitz around ten years down the road to save it a third time.

Didn't Waid & Kitson both stress that it was THEIR choice before?
And it's still not in the Top 10 Mr Levitz. And I haven't noticed any of those "SOLD OUT/BACK TO PRESS" press releases you like to do so much to mitigate this.

You're so negative. LSH # 1 was definitely one of DC's top selling books that month. You can't deny that.

But that top 10, if memory serves, includes a few mini series? Among DC's monthlies, it should be a few notches higher?

The real way to judge it IMO would be to not count the Superman/Batman books too.

Or JLA because it ties into JLA/Avengers. Or Teen Titans for, well, some reason.

I thought it said "Top Ten Comic Teams of All Time" as decided by Wizard, and that Paul Levitz was disappointed that the Legion didn't make that list... not that they weren't in the Top Ten sales overall.

Well, all I can say is I'm glad the days when the fans were excited to see the Legion crawl to # 88 on the top 100 are behind us.

Now that statement WAS out-of-bounds and cocky. This may indeed turn out be the best Legion we've seen in many many years, but the DEFINITVE Legion ended in TMK's LSH # 4.

I'm 50/50 on this latest attempt and while I do enjoy it I don't think it was the smartest way to launch a Legion book. The first two issues IMO weren't very new reader friendly especially two. Geoff Johns, Pacheco, Jim Lee...people who I have noticed over the years are fond of the Legion...and more importantly people who can sell lots of comics. If this doesn't work out (which I think it well though I expect sales to drop to near DnA levels...i just don't see DC cancelling it) when Waid & Kitson are done it won't suprise me if Geoff Johns gets this title.

I also take exception to the part "at it's core it's teenagers saving the universe". grrr. I see the Legion looked like kids from 1958 to whenever Grell/Cockrum redid their costumes. That is what 10/12 years or something? Since the early seventies until the mid nineties...over 20 years they were built like men & women.
Levitz's Legion were young adults not teenagers and was a top 2 book for DC.
It's kind of like Dick Grayson keeps coming back as Robin? He's Nightwing now...and I don't mind if he's 25 forever but he's not Robin anymore.

I still don't understand why we can't have the real Legion back.

The "real" Legion (as I see it) ceased to exist in 1989, and their greatness of spirit had already begun to dissipate in the mid-80s. The more I delve into the painfully twisted (imo) TMK era, the more willing I am to consign the original stories and characters to history. I still love them, but I do not want them back, nor do I see how they could be restored intact after all the damage done to their legacy. 'Legion Lost' was proof enough for me that their flame could be reignited with reimagined characters, if only for a brief time. WaK's new Legion is neither real nor definitive to me yet, no matter what Mr. DiDio proclaims, but if by some miracle WaK do succeed in fulfilling their promises, I'll be the first to thank them for bringing the "real" Legion back to life.

Personally, I'm just glad to be EXCITED about a Legion book again, and not just buying it out of "habit" or "duty".
I may not like EVERYTHING about this "new" Legion, but it's hella fun and exciting seeing where this book is gonna go, and finally seeing a Legion book with "buzz"!

Trom,
I think I feel the same way that you do. The Legion of Super-Heroes, from 1958 through 1989 (or 1994 if you include TMK), was an amazing run of beloved characters with cohesive continuity (by comics standards) and (again, by comics standards) real character arcs with growth, change, loss and renewal. I am pretty encouraged, so far, that the new Legion really does capture the spirit of the old in a newer context and setting. Given the wave of nostalgia-based stories lately at both Marvel and DC, I think it's pretty daring for Waid, Kitson and DC to tell new stories that don't flow directly from the classic ones.
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

Now I remember Wizard doing a top ten teams list one time a few years ago and the Legion was quite high on the list. IIRC, it was #6. Was this a new list? Did they do a brand new "definitive" list of the greatest teams of all time?

Yeah my Legion ended in 1989. I would love to see a new title launched a few months after the Magic Wars.
They were cool young adults...we could always add on new younger members. Look at the JSA...some people age new people join...it's the way it should be.
