Point of order question: So in one round I guess a correct letter and thus can try to solve. I miss either trying to solve or guessing a letter in the next round. Would I be allowed to still try to solve in the subsequent round?

^ I asked the same question earlier in the game Q.

Here was Paladin's response:

"Nope, you've gotta have a correct letter guess in the round that leads up to the latest reveal."

My understanding as well, hence the attempt to make each round about the same length. Apologies for ending a bit early frown

In principle, I think the rule should definitely be that in order to take a guess, you should have called in a letter in the previous round, and thus risked losing your ability to guess, but I'm also definitely sympathetic to concerns about inconsistent round length.

I hope I'm understanding the question correctly---Basically, you have to earn the right to solve each round. You can't save the opportunity for later if you choose to pass on it. The puzzle should become easier to solve as more letters get revealed, so I feel it's fair to reward those whose guesses have made it easier to solve when the puzzle runner "turns" the letters around.

It's the closest way I can approximate the dynamic of the show in a forum such as this. On the show, one person guesses a letter, spins again, guesses wrong letter, next person gets a chance to spin--if that person doesn't already know, then he spins, maybe gets a letter right and can now solve if he now has enough info. (Unless he knows it but is trying to get some more cash, which we can't replicate here, obviously.)

The only way to be more fair and somewhat replicate WoF would be to set a guessing order with participants getting one letter at a time to guess and having the opportunity to solve if they get a letter right or if they think they already know it. That would favor subsequent contestants, though.

I'd be against then letting the same person guess another letter instead of moving on to the next person because I can see the interest of those waiting their turn fading. And another downside would be (even if we immediately move to contestant B), what do we do if B either takes forever to post or simply doesn't--do we set a time limit? And how would that limit work for or against the folks who live on the other side of the world?

I said from the outset that there might be some growing pains trying to adapt it to this message board, but I feel it's been a success overall. I am totally open for alternatives that make sense and can be agreed upon by consensus.

I think the way we are doing it now is a very good compromise, all things considered. I can't think of a better way, off the top of my head. It would be ideal to have everyone posting with regularity (exact 12 hour or 24 hout cycles for example) but that is hardly practical.

I think twice a day is just about right for round lengths, but what does everyone else think?

I'm fine with the situation we have now, but I'm fine with whatever you want to change it to as long as the new rules are clear.

by the way, I will end this round now because I might not get another chance to until early in the evening my time (another 14-15 hours) frown

Topic: Food and Drink

_ A H L _ A
E S P R E S S _
M A R T _ N _

Lardy (M) - 1
EDE (G) - 0
Blacula (H) - 1
Kappa (A) - 3

Wrong guesses: C, G

It looks like Blacula eats or drinks just enough.

So applying the rule:

Because there is a tie between Lardy and Blacula for the guessed consonant appearing most often, nobody gets to guess a vowel this round.

Kappa, Lardy and Blacula may all solve.
Everyone may guess a consonant.

I'll attempt to solve, though I'm far from certain:

K A H L U A
E S P R E S S O
M A R T I N I?

You got it! An interesting and tasty cocktail which has become one of my favorites.

Not the most common I think, judging by everyone's puzzlement, but because all 3 words in it are fairly common I think it is a fair enough puzzle choice.

I should mention that the one exception to the "guess a correct letter to solve" is if you think you know the puzzle before any letters have been revealed at all. This happened when Kappa solved Ibby's "Final Fantasy" puzzle with only the clue and the spacing shown. I think in that one instance, it's a fair exception--not to mention an awesome chance to show off! grin

Wouldn't it be funny if the puzzle solution was "masochism"? The number of letters fits, and it could fit the category.... hmmm

Re: the Rules. I think they work very well as they stand now. They seem as close an approximation to the TV show as one could get within the confines of a message board.

I appreciate you saying that, Blacula. Since you live in Australia (and hopefully/presumably sleep more than Ibby! grin ), IIRC, you are most affected by any disadvantages that are time-zone related. I hope you get to solve one in the near future! nod
