Originally it was supposed to be JSA Idol only. Then I decided to throw in the All-Star Squadron characters. But the Squadron also includes all of the other teams you see here, and so that's how the list expanded.

This is definitely not an all-Golden Age game. If it were, the list would be much longer smile

I'm also a big fan of the Johns run (it's the only run I really read).

Maybe call it a "Golden Age/Earth 2 Team Idol" or something?

There are lots of characters on the list who have absolutely nothing to do with the JSA and, although I like them a lot, I feel I shouldn't be voting for them because they're unrelated to the topic ("JSA"). This includes almost all of the ASS, SSoV, FF and YAS characters.

Golden Age is not accurate either. Perhaps we should have stuck to just the JSA, but it's a bit too late for that now. But I agree, the JSA is the "core" of the list.

Round 2 Begins!

With only 99 characters left, it's time to begin ranking!

Pick 30 characters from the list, and rank them from 1 to 30. Characters will get points based on their rank, like so:

Rank Points
1 - 450
2 - 335
3 - 245
4 - 185
5 - 145
6 - 120
7 - 105
8 - 95
9 - 88
10 - 81
11 - 74
12 - 67
13 - 60
14 - 55
15 - 50
16 - 45
17 - 40
18 - 35
19 - 30
20 - 27
21 - 24
22 - 21
23 - 18
24 - 15
25 - 12
26 - 9
27 - 7
28 - 5
29 - 3
30 - 1

We will eliminate the Bottom 39 vote-getters to get to our Top 60!

House Rules

1) Each round will last about 48 hours. I will try to end each round at the same time, but this won't always be possible because of work.
2) I'll vote at the start of every round to minimize bias on my part.
3) I don't encourage editing of votes; it's a smart tactic but may be unfair for those who don't get to log on as often. However, I won't disallow them either. I'll only tally votes at the end of each round (to make it easier on myself!). I'll post on this thread the minute I start tallying to alert everyone; votes that come in after that will be ignored.
4) In case of errors in the results, I'll post a correction immediately. If anyone's vote was affected by the error, that poster will be notified by PM immediately. If the poster cannot correct his/her votes before the end of the round, he/she will get a makeup point next round - a +15 bonus. This only applies to instances where I made the error, and not where the poster made an error.
5) Points will be given based on your ranking. The higher you rank a character on your list, the more points that character will get (e.g. Rank 1 gets 10 points, Rank 2 gets 9 points...) Point distributions will change per round. If characters tie, the tie will be broken by considering the total number of points characters have gotten in previous rounds.
6) Exception to the above will be the first 1-2 rounds of the game, which trim the list down considerably. Each vote will count as one point, and characters below a certain point threshold get eliminated.

7) Because several characters have the same code name, and because the list includes multiple realities, PLEASE SPECIFY which character you are voting for. In fact, as much as possible PLEASE use the exact name that I have used on the list (this will make it easier for me to tally votes using Microsoft Excel!)

I won't make assumptions for votes which don't identify the character clearly. Example, if you vote for:

1) Doctor Fate
2) Cyclone
3) Star-spangled Kid
4) Green Lantern (TV: Brave and the Bold)

I'll only count the votes for Cyclone and Green Lantern. I have no way of knowing if you're voting for Dr. Fate Kent Nelson vs. Dr. Fate Kent V. Nelson, or whether you're voting for Star-spangled Kid Sly Pemberton, or Courtney Whitmore (she briefly used that name)!

Teams still represented:

Justice Society of America
JSA of New 52
JSA of Earth-2 Post-IC *note - included everyone in the picture
Freedom Fighters

All-Star Squadron
Infinity Inc.
Squadron of Justice
SSoV / Seven Soldiers of Victory
Young All-Stars
Elseworlds: The Golden Age

*note - only included those with speaking parts or significant characterization in the story

I listed characters according to code name. When classifying them under the appropriate team, I started with the JSA - so if a character has ever been a JSA member, they are listed there. Besides Hector Hall as Dr. Fate and Silver Scarab, I only listed a "core" reality character under one team. So Al Rothstein is Atom-Smasher under JSA, and is not listed under Infinity Inc. as Nuklon.

Random musings:

Ray "Happy" Terrill is the most famous of the original Freedom Fighters to go home. Did readers hate his treatment of his son Ray? Or... something else?

Captain Marvel Jr. is also the only Earth-S Marvel to go home.

Pleasantly surprised by our two top vote-getters (though not that they are both female - females tend to do well in Idol games). You go girls!

The New 52 team was wiped out entirely...

... as were the various TV teams.

Alas, poor Lightning (Jennifer, Black Lightning's daughter). I thought she made a good trio with Cyclone and Stargirl.

Also sad that Zinda Blake went home. But I think she'd do well in a Birds of Prey game. (but then, are there enough Birds to warrant their own game?)

I also always thought Miss America had potential, and I'm a bit surprised she went home this round. I thought she'd at least last a few more rounds.

Anyway, my votes:

1 - (Justice Society) Cyclone
2 - (Justice Society) Stargirl
3 - (Justice Society) Red Tornado (Ma Hunkle)
4 - (Justice Society) Obsidian
5 - (Justice Society) Huntress (Helena Wayne of Earth-2)
6 - (Justice Society) Power Girl
7 - (Justice Society) Thunderbolt
8 - (Young All-Stars) Tsunami
9 - (Justice Society) Black Canary (Dinah Lance Jr.)
10 - (Infinity Inc.) Jade
11 - (Justice Society) Wonder Woman (Diana of Earth-2)
12 - (Justice Society) Wildcat (Ted Grant)
13 - (Justice Society) Green Lantern (Alan Scott)
14 - (Justice Society) Flash (Jay Garrick)
15 - (Justice Society) Doctor Fate (Hector Hall)
16 - (Infinity Inc.) Fury (Lyta Hall)
17 - (Justice Society) Damage
18 - (Justice Society) Sand/Sandman (Sanderson Hawkins)
19 - (Justice Society) Liberty Belle/Jesse Quick
20 - (Justice Society) Hourman (Rick Tyler)
21 - (Justice Society) Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders)
22 - (All-Star Squadron) Mary Marvel (Earth-S)
23 - (Justice Society) Jakeem Thunder
24 - (Justice Society) Hawkgirl (Shiera Sanders)
25 - (Infinity Inc.) Wildcat (Yolanda Montez)
26 - (Infinity Inc.) Doctor Midnight (Beth Chapel)
27 - (All-Star Squadron) Firebrand (Danette Reilly)
28 - (Justice Society) Doctor Mid-Nite (Pieter Cross)
29 - (Freedom Fighters) Uncle Sam
30 - (Infinity Inc.) Brainwave, Jr.

Bah, Most of my top characters eliminated in the first round (including my top pick Shilo Norman)? Morrison's Seven Soldiers were super awesome, but I can see where they would be in contrast to a lot of the Golden Agers on this list. Going to have to re-think my voting.

Yeah, the Golden Agers in general are doing really well.

If the game had a different "theme"/ if we had a different universe of heroes, a lot of the modern characters (such as Shilo!) would probably have done much better.

And while I concede Kent V. Nelson's run in Justice Society was underwhelming, his (sadly unfinished) introductory story by Steve Gerber in Countdown to Mystery was really good.

Also, I just noticed the female Crimson Avenger wasn't on the list. She was a member during "Stealing Thunder", as was Icicle. Maybe fodder for Wildcard rounds?

Ah, they were members in one of those time-travel stories, right? I tend to miss out on "non-official" members whose memberships were erased like that...

Yeah, fodder for Wildcard rounds. At this stage of the game, it wouldn't be quite fair to include them in the list.

There was someone else I was thinking had been forgotten from the list but I didn't mention it because I'm not a fan of adding characters late (I feel like it gives an unfair advantage) but I'm forgetting who.

Edit: Oh yeah, just remembered - didn't the terrible Willingham run add people like Blue Devil and Kid Karnevil? Or am I misremembering?

Aw man. Not sure how I missed Blue Devil, when others who joined together with him were included.

I skipped Kid Karnevil because he joined as a spy/traitor.

Well, Wild Card fodder for Blue Devil then.

Whew! I'm glad you took that in exactly the way it was intended. I just reread it, and it wasn't meant as a criticism. Only that my thoughts changed as the scope of the Idol did. And as I read further down the list.

JSA+Friends Idol:)

From round 1, there are some versions I’ve never seen such as the TV one or more recent versions, such as anything beyond the first couple of Earth-2 issues. The revised Infinity Inc wasn’t a patch on the original.

I’m not too fond at voting for retconned characters, so there are a few Thomas creations that got 0 votes.

I see Firebrand was top, but I might have been the one not to vote for her. Thinking about it, Thomas was refused permission to use the Golden Age Wildfire character, so I shouldn’t be that harsh. Rod was eliminated.

I was surprised at how many characters had been affiliated to the Squadron, that I didn’t know about. I recall a two page pull out from one of the Squadron issues. It was a great introduction to golden age characters. But there was no Cap Marvel Jr, or Squire etc. I don’t mind the Newsboy Legion, but I don’t see them as part of the Squadron.

Surprise eliminations/ thoughts:-

Captain Triumph: A character I first saw in his who’s who entry, but one with an interesting origin. The Elseworlds version was pretty good, but both are gone. I can see why folks wouldn’t vote for Elseworlds Tex Thompson or Robotman, but Hourman and Hawkman come across very well there.

But it’s that version of Green Lantern going that’s the biggest surprise. He’s stepping up to be the Superman of the book. Not only that, but he’s someone whose shown to have a huge sense of responsibility. For his friends, workers and, in hanging up his ring, the world.

I can’t say I’m sorry to see the back of that glut of new Society members who were crammed into one of the versions.

Shilo Norman can escape anything. Except being mugged, and then tortured to death, because the writer needs to get through a plot hoop. Nil points from me. They were better than the Freedom Fighter updates that allowed the killing of stronger characters in Infinite Crisis.

Really surprised to see the back of the original Ray. Hearing of Lou Fine’s art was one of the early impressions I got at how revered some of the Golden Age artists were.

I’ve got a soft spot for Neon the Unknown, Magno, the Red Torpedo and friends. I’ve probably got fan plot around somewhere to prove it. Back in the All-Star Squadron, Uncle Sam recruits the Freedom Fighters. As lesser known as they were, they were to replace more obscure characters such as these.

Yeah, I thought Spencer would get through, what with having her own book. I had to recheck the list for Vixen smile That's one of the versions I've not seen.

I am surprised that Freddy got eliminated first, to me he was the most interesting Marvel. The covers alone by Mac Raboy are awesome. He even inspired Elvis Presley.

Shout out to Golden Age Plastic Man, as the art by Jack Cole was awesome. He deserves some love.

I would argue that Jessie has different powers/personality in her different identities; and the same with Nuklon/Atom Smasher. If they make it far, do you think you will separate them out?

IB, do you think we will have a Wildcard run since this game is going fast?

A good point about Jessie and Al. Sadly though I think it is too late in the game to split them into their versions.

We will definitely have at least one Wild Card round smile and I plan to slow the game down in later rounds, when the list is smaller and we are more invested in the characters left
