Over by the tent Bruce Wayne watches. Soon the hired killer would show up to kill the kid's parents. Wayne thought that the red t-shirt was a nice touch from his Robin-to-be.

He advises the unhappy man to go to the circus that night and spend the evening laughing at Grock, the world's funniest clown. I first heard that story, back when I was a kid. It was on a light entertainment show, known for it's quick laughs. Apart from the melancholy of the story itself, I remember it because the audience really didn't know what to do. There was some awkward laughter, that ended up as applause.

Merci Klar! Excellent performance and really well shot. Laughed at the guy taking a pic from the audience. "Aha! I shall just hold onto it for 70 years and it will be an internet sensation!"

Hee hee! Iceman has generated Ice Pants!

Phoenix: Stand in for Dazzler?

I used to see a lot of this sort of title when I were a young 'un*. Oversized reprints with airbrushed versions of the main characters. A bit more upmarket and there to titillate an older audience perhaps, but the jolt between cover and interior art was huge.

I did, thank you. It reminded me a lot of the way Nighty was written in Excalibur. Swashbuckling, high fantasy and some silliness. X-Men too, come to think of it. Oh, and gender switching too.

I scooted onto the Phoenix one. Buscema, Cockrum and Perez all tucked away in Bizarre Adventures.

Tsk. All that time Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and Bryan Talbot spend over Alice in Wonderland. What a waste when we already had Alice in Spaceland.

There's plenty of skulduggery over in Lorna Doone too!

It does lose points for trying to muscle in on the Legion World Barrette giveaways, with their hairbands.

Is Bradford reaching for a device to help Starrex?
Or is he just Bricking it?

I used to own that. The interior art was pretty damn good, but... yeah. For a guy thought of as a writer of "strong" women, Claremont has a whole lot of creepy stuff in his oeuvre.

Seconded to the MAX!! In hindsight, it says a lot about how p!$$-poor most of the pre-Claremont portrayals of women in superhero comics were that his approach was seen as progressive at the time.

Thank you, Cleome.

It is so weird how much markets shifted from female dominated in the 1940s to male dominated by the late 1980s (kind of needs its own thread, but I lack creativity in titles). It reflects deep changes in in society, publishing, and comic book distribution.

"The Forsaken Fangirls of the Direct Market Era."

?

That sounds really good. Which one of us should start the thread?

I'll be happy to start it. Hopefully before I leave for my job at 12 noon. If not, definitely tonight.

I think I brought up similar when everyone was making fun of Terry in one of the Titans threads, but seriously: if you had to catalogue every moment of men being creepy to women/girls in the comics I grew up [sic] with, you'd be here non-stop for at least a couple of weeks.
