Little birds, hose nozzle and bad bird get vertical thirds as a focus. The little birds and hose are in the middle horizontal, with the character who's down about the something that falls, a bit beneath. The nozzle, as gag, is pretty much central to the cover. The hosepipe also connects all three verticals. Technically, it's a great cover.

37. The Spectre, although I do favour the Ray art. But the Spectre gives you an idea about the story, and there's the Spectre killing Corrigan thing going on. I've no idea why Golden Age villain, The Mist is loitering in the corridor though. The Ray cover is hard. We all miss Tree Lad. But to steal his body from the local horticulturalist and dress it up for Christmas is just wrong.

38. Master Comics. Well drawn figures and lots of good technical detail. And what's more heart rending than saving orphans in their school bus. "How do I know they're orphans?" Oh, they got Bullet Dog to try and save a coach load of parents on a night out in #19. Beetle may be fast moving, but his aim is way off...unless that Staircase is the top German spy, The Chameleon!

39. Batman Family. Just full of pointless posing and cover text.

Exit The Batman: Curse you! I'll get those spare Batmobile parts!
It does lose points for not have Enter The Ragman on rags though. Batman '66 is well enough done, but a bit on the nose looks wise for me.

40. Spidey: Star Warriors and Space Knights is going to make for a more fun story than Lightmaster. But Spidey gets the win for the extra details, not least the boiler.

Cover size may have made a difference. From the thumb, I saw the nozzle (and central part of the gag) first.

37. THE RAY: The Spectre is certainly creepy although the stuff on the floor is distracting, but the Ray is beautifully posed and wonderfully conveys the loneliness and depression.

38. MASTER COMICS: Bulletman is in action doing something. For all I know Blue Beetle could have just tripped over the balcony.

39. BATMAN '66: If I am honest this win is mostly for the nostalgia.

40. PETER PARKER, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN Rom is pretty good but the lighting and effect on Spider-Man is spectacular, really eye-grabbing.

38. MASTER COMICS. The Bullets have a SWOOP. Beetle gonna have a SPLAT.

39. BATMAN FAMILY although the indicia is a touch much.

40. PPSSM. ROM is a lil hard to follow and I spent a little time trying to figure out the quasi-Rising Sun thing.

37. Spectre - the scene half-seen and the mists and ?water outside the door create mystery, although The Ray offers a definite bleakness which holds the eye.

38. Blue Beetle - more sense of action as he plunges down. The spiral staircase is a curious addition. Looks like Bulletman should be gripping that bus in the middle and Bulletgirl is doing nothing.

39. Batman Family - classic Bat cover okay, I just don't like the '66 art that much.

40. Peter Parker - a lot more spectacular than the ROM guys with that weird red splash background.

41. Deadly Class - the black space increases the isolation and desperation feeling; E of W's blank white is just blank white, with some info.

42. Weird Fantasy - presumably someone has come across this disaster in which a ship hits the only tree on that planet. I want to know more. Hope those Boy Commandos have vertical takeoff; their ship is about 1 foot from those glassed-in astronauts.

43. Boris the Bear - oddly appealing with those rectangles. The swords could stand out more. Booster's pretty good. You can do a lot with a black background.

44. Captain America - broken shield or shield symbol, with dust/smoke rising and helpless heroes. Carrot - too many colours or odd colours and figures.

41. DEADLY CLASS: The "lightning bolt" or whatever it is really draws the eye and points to the character, apparently running for their life. Even if it is just the light between massive shadows it works well.

42. BOY COMMANDO: There is an obvious air of mystery here making me want to know what is going on, whereas the other cover is messy and just a crashed spaceship (with bodies).

43. BOOSTER GOLD: Even without the caption you can tell that Booster can't see and is groping in the dark. Very effective.

44. CAPTAIN AMERICA: Nice clean work and an indication of something dramatic with Cap's shield shattered (metaphorically, too big to be his actual shield). Zoo Crew is too crowded, although that is the norm for the title, which causes the guest stars who would add to the appeal to become lost.

41. Deadly Class. We get that touch of fear Billy Batson feels when he's about to get his powers, or when he's fallen into an Omen film. Nice diagonals, including the effect on the logo.
42. Weird Fantasy. A very tough one. I want to read them both. The Boy Commandos discover that the Cybermen are from the Moon and not Mondas (eerily similar. Hmmmm). But the bleak fate of the astronauts in Fantasy is the one I'd want to know more about. Is the story about them? Their discovery and the threat that awaits the discoverers.
43. Booster Gold. Boris' Ninja War against abstract art would be the winner normally. But I read it as "I Boris" and it throws me off, especially I connect it to I Claudius. Booster's Jurgen highlighted gold costume works well enough with the black, and the story tie in for the points.
44. Captain America. I groaned at the tired symbolism of the broken shield. But Zoo Crew has a huge amount of text on it, some of it slating a character guest starring form a much more successful book. Silly cluttered marketing.

41. DEADLY CLASS. Sharp! And let's face it, that EOW color combo is difficult.

42. Both very eye-catching, but WEIRD FANTASY is extra. The pink! Spaceship hull being breached by skulls! "I'm not drunk and that space-tree jumped in front of me, officer!"

43. BOOSTER GOLD. Not the first time I've seen the concept, but still solid. As for Boris, I might like it a bit better if the speed lines (speed shapes?) had a different color palette.

45. All Teen - The figures are full of life and movement. Then there's the gag with the fire service. I'm sure I've listened to industrial music, with drilling, so Archie does get points for being ahead of its time.

46. X-Men Blue. X-Factor is a random part of the X-Scorecard walking (or running). The blurb tells me that it's just the start, but it's a final issue. Blue has a random part of the X-Scorecard, but at least there's the chance they were dumped there as part of a story. Even though I prefer the art and Factor, it's Blue for the win.

47. West Coast Avengers. Again, it's having a story rather than a pose that gets the win. The WCA Avengers art grows on me over time, although I'm not sure why Wondy and Stark don't just fly out of there.

48. Gangbusters. Wondy has whimsical, cheesecake appeal and the better logo, but I want to see how those crooks fare against Police Tank later on in that issue.

45. All Teen - high energy and it took me a minute to notice the firemen, which is an unexpected joke.

46. X-Men Blue - I like both, but the disappearing figures into white background is more urgent and mysterious. The other guys are walking away, pissed off, of their own free will, no doubt a good story but not haunting like the other.

47. West Coast Avengers - what urgency and desperation! Many trying to save one is more tense than each one scrabbling out of the sand alone.

48. Sensation - for the sheer silliness, the accompanying (rather small) eagles and the termite mound (?). Did the magic lasso have powers beyond truth telling back then, like making jeeps fly? Gang Busters promises a good story, but loses for the oppressive yellow background.

45. ALL TEEN COMICS: Usual mildly funny joke on Archie but the amazing dances moves on Teen grab my attention.

46. X-MEN BLUE: Both good covers but the fading out or possibly snow blizzarded X-Men is much more interesting.

47. MIGHTY AVENGERS: I never really liked the art during this phase of WCA although the perspective is good, but the way the MA are drawn along with the placement and art are quite appealing.

48. GANG BUSTERS: Having the car driving towards the reader (well a bit below) makes this more interesting and dramatic and I really don't understand the other cover.

45. Archie has a better overall package, but the jitterbuggers burning up the dance floor are very appealing. (I didn't notice the firefighters at first, either.) ALL TEEN

46. X-MEN BLUE. Are they fading in or fading out? It's a cross-time caper, you say?

47. MIGHTY AVENGERS. Not-so-Accidental Renaissance? ABSOLUTELY grabs my eye, both for the approaching-photoreal painting and Jan's expression.

48. SENSATION COMICS. Well, no one can accuse Wondy of being a back seat driver.

49. Fatale. The overall cover design is stylish. There's a better grasp of anatomy than on the more cartoonish Warlock, and do the smouldering glasses lead to there being smouldering eyes behind them?

50. Alpha Flight: A different looking villain (for someone who hadn't seen Madame Mask et al), a very cold look and a big close up. Oliver looks like he's deranged and doing something with Hal's battery that will result in him going blind. Incidentally, the Gilded Lily was utterly forgettable, so it didn't take much trying.

51. Spooky: If you had bedsheet ghosts, this is how'd you'd store 'em. But it's a bit sad, and I trust they're all free and haunting away by stories end. I'd want to read it to make sure. >sigh< Yet another Titans cover where they leave all their costumes for someone else to pick up. No crimefighting 'until you clean up after yourselves! No points for having an "every volume must have this story" cover.

52. Sex: An interesting lower logo and one that puts some fizz into some dwinkies! >hic< Beanworld is well.. in it's own world...and this one isn't saying a whole lot, although it might be about to explode.
