I haven't been able to find any news articles on this, but it's been mentioned on Facebook by people who should know (including Paul Levitz).

Longtime Legion colorist Carl Gafford apparently passed away within the past couple of weeks.

I don't know many details, but it's worth taking a moment to remember one of the key figures in Levitz's classic second run on the Legion.

Gafford's colors always had a real pop & fizz to them.

Rest in peace, and thank you.

Still "Fickles" to my friends.

The latest rereads made me realise how important Gafford's palette was in adding to the atmosphere and effect of Giffen's art. It really was a team effort behind the success of the book at the time, and Gafford was certainly a part of that.
