So, totally random and not related to anything with the Legion Lore Fanzines or anything... wink

Does anyone know the comic or source of this ad?

Or do you have a much larger and better quality scan?

I don't know the specific issue, but this was just after Legion Lost and was the ad to say the characters were returning to the main comics.

I wasn't reading many of the DC titles released that month.

October 2001 Solicitations

Of those, very few are out of storage. I did have a few issues of JLA Incarnations to hand. There's a Superman ad in there, with the same original Universe branding as this one. I guess the Legion one is in some of those monthly books.

Dave Rash has the original pencils at his site, but doesn't list which books the finished ad was published in. Have you tried contacting him?

The art in the ad's just a cropped version of the The Legion #1 cover (which was, in an odd choice, published horizontally even though the comic wasn't.)

My views are my own and do not reflect those of everyone else... and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I did this too. And every book I picked from that and the surrounding months (I have pretty much every DC book at that time) didn't have the ad.

Here's the image compared to the cover (not the same) -

Well, here's the books that came out the same month as TL1 (dated Dec 2001, published Oct): https://www.dcuguide.com/w/Category:December_2001
And the previous month (same month as LW6): https://www.dcuguide.com/w/Category:November_2001

Pretty much have to be in (at least) one of those books. I'm betting on December cover-date. Maybe check the Last Laugh mini - as a weekly release, it would have burned through a lot of house ads.

Huh, weird. Judging from the notes on the original art, it was certainly intended for the cover. Editor must have got cold feet about the jackets and asked for a redraw, but then still odd they used it for an ad (especially when the solicit used an interior splash page).

I definitely remember that image from the time, but I have no idea what the source would be.

Is it possible that it was in magazine like Wizard? I don't know what was published around then. They might have had to send out the art earlier than an in-house ad and changed from jackets after the art was sent.

Hmmm...good idea. Unfortunately, I don't even know where I have any of my old Wizard mags to check.

It would be some time around Wizard #121 if that was the case: https://comicvine.gamespot.com/wizard-the-comics-magazine/4050-18692/?page=3

For those keeping score at home and want a resolution to this problem - I finally found the ad in the pages of Orion #19.

Congrats! How many books did you go through until it turned up?

Unfortunately my comics are scattered to the winds (in boxes and in bookcases) in multiple houses at the moment, so I wrote down a list of key issues to look for and when I had the chance. I'd find a series and look at 10 or so issues before and after (just in case). Probably hundreds. I thought for sure the Green Arrow series would have had it as it was the first one I encountered that really had several "The Original Universe" ads that I never saw in any other series.
