I am starting the planning stage of this Idol today because I expect to be busy next week. Just like with the Batvillain Idol, we will have the difficult task of making the list 100-200 characters maximum. There are so many Spider-Villains that have only made a few appearances, so this may take a week.

I would prefer to copy-paste from wiki's as a last resort, as I am reluctant to include characters that have less than two appearances. They are highly likely to be voted off in the first two or three rounds, so it feels like a waste to include them.

Emily and I are at a crossroads, should J. Jonah Jameson be considered?

If individuals that aren't necessarily super-villains, but have served in an adversarial role to Spidey, such as Black Cat, Rocket Racer and the Prowler are being considered, then darn tootin' J. Jonah Jameson should also be counted.

I added most of Paladin's suggestions, but I have a handful of questions.

Kingpin: Do we still want to list him as a Spider-Villain even though he is better known as a Daredevil Villain? Marvel bascically considers him a Daredevil Villain, as he was part of Daredevil's film rights when he was leased.

Dr. Doom: I'm not including him as he is definitely more a FF Villain or general Marvel Villain Tournament material.

Carrion (possibly separated into I & II?): If they are two distinct people, then they should be listed separately. If one or the other is obscure, I will list the one with more appearances.

Meteor Man/Looter: Was this a name change or a change in powers/alignment? (good or evil) If it is the later, I will list them separately.

Punisher: I'm reluctant to include him as a villain, as he is more of an anti-hero. I know Felicia is kind of gray zone too, but she was definitely a thief.

EDIT: While I was preparing my post, Elvar posted his list. I was worried that he may have nominated Joystick ahead of me, but it turned out she's so obscure she didn't even make Elvar's list of obscure Spidey-Rogues. LOL

Seriously, though, Elvar, I gotta hand it to you. Some of the ones you listed are probably only known to the hardest of hardcore Spidey-Fans.

He debuted as a Spidey villain and fought him MANY times both before he and DD ever clashed and many times afterwards.



He fought Spidey on many occasions. If this were one of Ibby's very inclusive Idol games, I think he's be included.



At some point, Carrion was explained to be more of a virus infecting hosts with basically the same personality and abilities. It's probably alright to just list him once as carrion.

All of these have a minimum of 2 appearances. Most have a lot more.

I have added most of Paladin's and will be adding all of Set's shortly.

I'm excluding anyone at the moment that I feel is debatable until I get some sort of consensus.

Elvar, please remove any names on your list which match that of the first post on this thread. That way it will be easier for me to look up the appearances.

Punisher definitely started as a villain (arguably he's never stopped being a villain, but that's just me). Prior to the late 80's though he was always a villain (and usually against Spidey or DD).

Kingpin was a Spider-Villain, and even though he's gone over to DD more in the last few decades, he's still one of the "New York" villains they shared.

Doom I wouldn't consider a Spidey Villain (he's really fought everyone).

I bolded the ones on the list that seem to be on first post. might want to remove King Bee, Occultist and Simple Simon on my list i believe each only has one appearance.

I remember Kingpin as a Spider-villain on a couple of old cartoons. More support for him being included.

And Jameson has been such an antagonist that I think he could do well in this game.

As for including characters, like Lardy says I tend to be more inclusive. It's not too much work, and while most characters do get eliminated early, you never know which ones will become dark horses (Ma Hunkel anyone? :p)

I feel like I have deja vou. I am going to find the Bat-Villain Idol thread and see if a precedent has been established for any of these cases. I feel like we had the same discussions there.

Do we want to list groups as separate members or as a whole? I have done both in Flash Rogues Idol and the LSV Idol, so there is no clear precedent.

I wouldn't want to list the Sinister Six as a separate choice because all participants are very prominent as solo villains and having the Six available would seem like a cheat. On the flip side, the individuals that comprise the Enforcers would probably do much worse separately than they potentially could as a group (and they were almost always presented together), so I would list them as a group.

He's a can of worms for you: What about Ultimate Spider-man Villains? Obviously some, like the Goblin, are completely different from their regular marvel counterparts. Do they get separate entries?

I can only speak for my own Idol games, but I have created separate entries for characters whose versions are significantly different. In Multiverse Legion I had separate entries for Preboot Brainiac 5, Postboot, Threeboot, SW6...

Agreed, particularly with these examples. Doc Ock, Sandman, Mysterio, Elektro, etc. have all been significant villains on their own. Fancy Dan, Ox and Snake Marston, not so much.

I have never read a story with Snake Marston, nor seen any description, or even knew about his existence bfore this very minute, but based on the name alone he is now my odds on favourite to win the Idol.

You're not thinking of his cousin, Snake Plisskin are you?

Oh, a quick wikipedia look-up shows that Snake and Hammer Harrison were occasional members of the Enforcers in addition to the core three!

We can include other versions if they are significant. I have been doing that since the Bat-Villain Idol (where the majority of our Prep discussion was about whether various Bronze Age characters were different than Modern ones). For the Marvel Games, I would like to list them by either Universe Name or Number.

I only read one Trade Paper Back of Ultimate Spider-Man, so I have no knowledge of those villains.

Are there two versions of the Enforcers? And I thought the Circus of Crime were Fantastic Four villains?

This could get messy with all the team-ups Spider-Man has done throughout the years. If I do the FF separately, I imagine I am going to have the same problems with Thing Team-Ups.

Important Edit: Is Kingpin equally important to Spider-Man as he is to Daredevil?

I found out that I included Vandal Savage in the Flash Rogues Idol because he was equally a JSA and Flash Villain?

Circus of Crime were Spider Man foes (I believe they started in a Spider Man/Daredevil team up) but they were used for pretty much everyone - F4, Thor, the Hulk...

In his early career, Kingpin was a major Spidey foe. But it's an earlier version of Wilson Fisk (if that makes sense). He's nowhere near the menace he is in Daredevil (IMO).

I don't know much about Marvel characters but I've heard that one of their best villains is a character called Turner D. Century. Should he be on this list?

Yes, and he may still be Venom. Not clear on that. But his version is generally heroic.

Speaking of different versions of Venom, should Mac Gargan/Scorpion get a second entry on this list for his time as Venom? And what about those other symbiotes that were around for a while?

There are also multiple Hobgoblins: Roderick Kingsley, Jason Macendale & Phil Urich are the major versions. (Several others were brainwashed or otherwise used as stand-ins, including Flash Thompson, Lefty Donovan, Ned Leeds, Daniel Kingsley and Roderick's butler Claude, but I wouldn't count them.) Jason Macendale, btw, also fought Spider-Man as Jack O'Lantern.

And then there was Demogoblin, a demon who fused with Macendale for a time before becoming a separate entity.

I have two versions of Venom on the list. I am aware of Toxin, and will add him/her to list if it is relevant. I might do more research and see if there are more I should add.

I will add Kingpin to his list. He is added under the Vandal Savage exemption clause. If we ever have a DD Villains Idol or Marvel Villains Idol, he will equally be included.

No, he's not from Ultimate Universe at all.



Are you talking about the Hobgoblins? I think Kingsley, Macendale and Urich are the three most significant Hobgoblins. The others were basically patsies or stooges.

Also, Phil Urich was later known as the Goblin Knight and, most recently, the Goblin King. I don't recommend separate entries for these identities, but for completeness, they should be included as slashes or something, Just as Jason Macendale should be listed as both Hobgoblin and Jack O'Lantern.

Ultimate Demogoblin was Mary Jane Watson.

I have decided to cave and dig up an online encyclopedia. I am going to add the following to the list:

Yes, you never told me the order of the Hobgoblins, so I am just going to include the one.

Well, I didn't want to call them I, II and III because that wasn't exactly accurate due to their being minor Hobgoblins in-between. But I feel that this isn't an accurate Spider-Idol without them getting separate entries. It should've been:

I was confused by Paladin's list as I thought the Hobgoblin was Ned Leeds. I then got sucked into the black hole of researching Hobgoblin's publishing history. Wow, what a mess. Basically different writers wrote him with different identities, editor's changed it on them, and basically there are Hobgoblin stories where he is now retroactively one character, but at the time it was published was meant to be someone completely different.

Ramrod is, hilariously, the jobberiest of the three jobbers that Moondragon empowered upon coming to Earth, as the start of an army of super-jobbers she intended to use in her one-woman war against Thanos.

Of the three, Dark Messiah was a pretty tough customer, but he bailed. She was left with Ramrod, and Angar the Screamer.

She wisely abandoned that idea and joined the Avengers, instead.

Depending on how quickly you want the Idol to run, and given that a relatively large group of characters ended up 5 votes or higher, I'd consider dropping the ones as well as the zeroes.

I get the results of these rounds by dividing the result by the top score of the round. I got the idea for this from RexFactor Podcast's old method of deciding reign scores for the Kings and Queens of England. Will O Wisp, in particular, is one of those complete nobodies that I unreasonably love. A team of one-shot wonders like Will O Wisp, Unuscione, Sunturion, Texas Twister, Scaleface, Abraham Lincoln Keiros/War, Cecelia Reyes, etc. would tickle my fancy.

Ana Kravinoff is my latest favorite 'daughter of another character taking his role', and I'd love, love, LOVE to see her and Elsa Bloodstone working together (or at cross-purposes, or a little bit of both, with some decidedly UNfriendly competition, perhaps?).

Grey Gargoyle is another one from the old days that I have some sort of misdirected affection for. Maybe I spent time as a petrified statue and it's Rockholm Syndrome? I don't even know.

I liked comic-book Sandman, when he had a sort of redemption arc going on and was a reserve Avenger and working with Silver Sable, but he's back with the Sinister Six and I can't get the foul stank of that appearance in the third Spider-Man movie out of my head, so, 5 points for him! <Spits> We shall speak of him no more!

I've got very few Spidey comics. I was going to say two, but I seem to remember reading the Kraven story somewhere. Apart from that it's RPGs, Secret Wars and cross overs in other books.

I remember Sandman as a reserve Avenger. An unintentionally hilarious book.

I have fond memories of Swarm in the Spider Man and His Amazing Friends cartoon
The Fly, Tarantula and Puma loomed large in two eras of Spider Man that I followed.

Goodbye, sweet villains...

I have my Wild Card already picked for when the time comes. I like Sable a lot. She reminds me of Emma Frost.

I hated to lose Phil Urich. I doubt any of you have read the great, current Dan Slott era, but Phil has been an excellent villain. Slot portrayed him as kind of the anti-Peter Parker. Phil also worked for the Bugle by day and was secretly the latest vile Hobgoblin. One of the cool things they did was occasionally show Phil's face half Phil/half Goblin when he was thinking about his villainous activities as Phil. A cool reference to the classic half Peter/half Spidey face visual to underline how the characters were mirror images of each other.

Instead of drawing out the latest Hobgoblin's identity, readers knew from the beginning who he was, while the other characters were left in the dark. Eventually, Phil was confronted by Kingsley for the right to be Hobby and was eventually brought down by Doc Ock as the Superior Spider-Man. After that, Phil hooked up with Norman Osborn to then cement his connection with the entire Goblin legacy.

That's still the character's most significant appearance in my mind. Memories!



Not a huge Fly fan, but the Tarantula had a great story arc with Will o' the Wisp and the Brand Corporation under the great Spidey scribe that will always make the fairly minor Spidey villain stand out more than he would otherwise. Puma was great under DeFalco's stint, and Peter David used him a lot, too. Too bad he's mostly faded into obscurity. I'm surprised Slott hasn't revived him as he has some other recently less-used Spidey characters.

Still, some of my quirky favorites, like Morbius, Will O Wisp, Gray Gargoyle, the Lobo Brothers and Ana Kravinoff are hanging on by a thread!

The scale will remain the same for now. I anticipate we will need a Wild Card Round after this.

I have decided to start the Semi-Finals on December 26th. I suspect many people will be busy until that day so I see know point in starting now. Happy Holidays.

On a side note, I intend to start a Legion text based RPG sometime in the New Year. As such, I suspect I will be taking a break from running Idol games for the next few months.
