This certainly looks interesting visually. I never would have guessed it was Immomen. Ellis' writing is hit or miss with me, but the fact that Machine Man is in the lineup (along with Boom Boom, Captain Marvel (the hero formerly known as Photon), Bloodstone and The Captain (I wonder if it's that kid from "Cap & Falcon" (did he even survive? I don't remember)) will make me pick up the first few issues to see what it's all about (assuming it's the same Machine Man). Needless to say, it's off the beaten path. Could it be a more Vertigo take on the Marvel U (is that what the "Beyond" imprint is?)?

I don't know about this, from what I've read Ellis doesn't seem to have a good grasp on the characters.

Is Machine Man supposed to drink?
Ellis is comparing Meltdown/Boomer/Boom Boom to Paris Hilton.

I'm actually looking forward to this. It actually looks fresh and different, which most Marvel stuff hasn't been for me in quite some time.

Ellis on Machin Man:“There's Aaron Stack, who used to be called Machine Man when he was the crappiest robot superhero on the block,”

I hope he manages to treat MM well in this series at least. As I remember, Machine Man wasn't a "superhero" per se, but a robot trying to live like a man but never quite being able to. I wonder if he'll explain what happened to him after the "X-51" series (I'd think after that horrible misstep into the X-world that Machine Man would need a drink or two). Don't know how I feel about him having hair though. I kinda liked the old purple look for its simplicity.

[edit: I forgot that he had hair in his civilian ID back in the day]

i have to admit, this title looks fun (something Marvel has been lacking, IMO, for far too long)

wonder how long Ellis and Immomen can last on a title at Marvel ??? hopefully the BEYOND imprint means less editorial interference on a title

can't wait to see a more cynical (in my mind, 'realistic') look at some of these burnouts, has-beens, and poorly used heroes

(i've always rooted for Monica Rambeau & Machine Man even with all their BAD storylines; and Boomer/Boom-Boom/Meltdown has only been good, IMO, when she's on the extremes)

could The Captain be Captain Ultra?

And, yes, I was one of the few who picked up that Bloodstone mini-series (because it was being done by our dear DnA)

I am interested. I am not a Ellis fan. Infact never liked anything he's done. Weird I know.

But this draws my attention. I hope Monica Rambeau doesn't dragged through the mud much though. Me like her. frown

'The Captain' is supposedly every Captain 'Whatever' character Marvel has ever put out that didn't go anywhere (ie every Captain except Captain America, Captain Marvel, etc.)

One of the interviews Ellis gives re: NextWave exposes this - can't remember where I read it...

It would be cool if he was Captain Ultra...and a few other Captains smile

I think he's going to be many Captain but none that we've heard of. One week he was Captain Victory, next week Captain Knockout, etc.

I will approach with caution, if not just go right into full "wait for the trade" mode.

Comic Book Resources has some artwork from Stuart Immomen. Looks good, though Immomen's style has gone through a lot since the last time I saw him.

I strongly advise you to pick up the following:

SHE-HULK (TPBs available for vol 1, Vol 2 started last month), THE THING (starts this month!), and the recent GLA (Great Lakes Avengers) miniseries (GLX-MAS SPECIAL coming next month!), all written by the Supreme Dan Slott.

and

THE DEFENDERS miniseries currently running, by Giffen, DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire.

Is THE THING supposed to be a more light-hearted book? I hadn't heard this.

This is some funny stuff. It hinges on being too clever for its own good, but I'm so there. There's a whole lot of mileage in "Fin Fang Foom's underpants" jokes.

So what could Captain ****'s name have been? I've decided that whenever I read the "****" - it means a$$h0le... that's right - *CAPTAIN A$$H0LE* (that's my theory and I'm stickin to it!) I think Captain America would've washed his mouth out for that one.

Oh boy. This comic RULES!!! So many overt and subtle jokes... smile Ellis is squeezing out some of his punchiest, snarkiest patter, and manages to writhe all over the Fourth Wall, yet never actually breaks it. Immonen - well, I love his art anyway, but this... This is awesome - just a little exaggerated from his usual style and totally chocked full of character and emotion.
Now, I don't know any of these characters at all, but I don't care. I am riding this crazy train until the end... I advise you all to jump on board before it gets too far from the station. laugh

PS Check out the upcoming issue solicitations where you can find them... Some of the funniest solits I've read ever. One of them starts with "ATTENTION, SCUM!" wink

I went base level on this one, and searched for a four-letter word strong enough to make Captain America beat up another hero... I settled on one in particular, and then when later on when Elsa says "Abso****lutely, darling", I decided I had to be right...

**** can only mean... uh... F**K. (And I'm not talking about that Brit clothing label. wink )

PS I just reread the little codicil thingie on that same page: "NEXTWAVE - is a super hero comic about five people who have just minutes to prevent a town from being eaten by a giant lizard monster in purple underpants" lol lol

PPS I think it should have been Abso****inglutely... cool

Aw, man. Now I can't wait to read this... It'll be here Monday with my end-of-month DCBS shipment.

If it's as good as you guys say, I'm gonna need to buy this off the shelves until my preorders can catch up; I only ordered #1 because of the additional discount I was getting (50%).

I've ended up with more new titles that way... lol wink

I haven't ordered this and was going to pass but I've become an Ellis-aholic. So I got a copy of #1 and loved it. Funny as hell. Now, like Pov, I'll be scrambling to catch up with it on the shelves until I can get it ordered. And since I just submitted my April order that won't be until May.

I really like the team dynamics that have been set so far -- Monica as field leader is a great role. She's definitely looking like the straightman since she's the most experienced (Machine Man has been around longer, but was rarely an "active" hero). I like her nostalgia for her time in the Avengers cuz you know this team is not going to be anything like them. I also like how Machine Man is being portrayed so far - also experienced but laid back if not blase. "Fleshy ones" reflects a kind of ... sass he didn't have too much of before. I hope they get into how he ended up back on earth in his more normal form.

I've had to re-read the thing 3 times. Each time I pick up even more jokes. The first read through I literally couldn't stop laughing the entire read.

The Dirk Anger lines when he's going on about his dining habits made me lose it completely though. So what if Ellis had gotten use of Nick Fury and SHIELD like he originally wanted?
