Cosmic Boy by Al Plastino

ADVENTURE COMICS #247 (April 1958)
Cosmic Boy first appears in "The Legion of Super-Heroes," the first story written by Otto Binder, drawn by Al Plastino, and edited by Mort Weisinger. In this story, Superboy meets three super-youths [Cosmic Boy, Lightning Boy (later Lad), and Saturn Girl] from the 30th century, who invite him to the future to join their "Super Hero Club."
Although he wears a helmet on the cover and carries one in one panel of the story, no reason is given for it's need and he never wears this uniform again in any later stories [except for an occasional flashback to this tale]. He uses a rocket-pack to fly.
Cosmic Boy is the apparent leader of the Legion and is the second to compete with Superboy in a contest to see whom can douse forest fires started by a rocket-liner crash. Cosmic Boy wins the competition and reveals a little about himself, "Special serums gave me magnetic eyes of super-power! I'll pull a flock of iron meteors down from space, to fill that lake near the fire!" After Cosmic Boy rejects Superboy from membership, the true contest is revealed about how well Superboy will accept defeat. Superboy is admitted into the club and Cosmic Boy reveals that he used his magnetic-vision to distract Superboy with a old satellite pulled from its orbit.

Cosmic Boy by George Papp
ADVENTURE COMICS #267 (December 1959)
The first story, "Prisoner of the Super-Heroes!" has Cosmic Boy show up Superboy by using his magnetic eyes to save a plane from crashing. Later as a member of the "Council of Superboy Planet," Cosmic Boy imprisons Superboy on the artificial planet created in Superboy's honor. Cosmic Boy learned from the Futurescope that Superboy would become a Super-Outlaw. However, all is forgiven after Superboy saves the Legionnaires and other heroes on Superboy Planet from the [deadly to humans] element sigellian. Released from his oath by the President, Superboy reveals that his path of destruction was him erasing all traces of a horrible poison gas. The story is written by Jerry Siegel, drawn by George Papp, and edited by Mort Weisinger.Cosmic Boy wears a costume that resembles the one he would wear throughout the remainder of the Silver Age and uses a rocket-pack to fly.

KNOW YOUR LEGIONNAIRES - THE ORIGIN OF COSMIC BOY:
On the planet Braal, there are whole species of animals of living metal. Some of these are monstrous creatures which are very dangerous. The humans of that world would long ago have falled victim to these brutes if they had not evolved a method of combatting them - magnetic powers which enable them to attract or repel certain metals, such as iron and nickel. It was on this planet that Rokk Krinn, son of Hu and Ewa Krinn, was born. When he was in his teens, a financial depression struck the entire world of Braal. Times were hard and jobs were difficult to come by. Since the people of Braal consider a person grown at the age of 14, Rokk decided to do something to help his family. He figured his magnetic powers would be useful in some industry on the planet Earth - so that's where he headed. It was just at this time that two other alien young people with super-powers chose to visit our world - Garth Ranzz and Imra Ardeen. Garth and Rokk met soon after they reached Earth and they roomed together. One day, they happened to be at the same place as Imra - and the three of them used their powers to save the life of the richest man in the universe. So impressed was he that he suggested they form a crime-fighting organization, which he would finance. This was perfect for Rokk, since their benefactor, Mr. Brandes, included ample money to support them and their families. The full story of the Legion's origin will be told in a future issue. Suffice it to add that Rock, Garth and Imra became, respectively, Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl, and they have since used their magnetic, electrical and ESP powers to battle evil throughout the universe. Rokk brought his parents and his kid brother, Pol, to Earth, where the new Legion of Super-Heroes was headquartered. They live in a cottage in one of the suburbs of Metropolis. Oh, yes - Cosmic Boy became the first leader of the Legion. He has since been succeeded by Saturn Girl, Brainiac 5 and Invisible Kid.

COSMIC BOY
Rokk Krinn of Braal
Although he told Superboy he got his “magnetic eyes of super-power” from special serums in the first Legion story (Adventure 247) in reality his parents were responsible for Cos’ magnetic powers.
On Braal, his parents’ birthplace, dangerous species of living metal monsters menaced the humans. To combat them, the inhabitants developed magnetic powers which they used to repel the beasts. His parents, Hu and Ewa Krinn, were on Earth when Rokk was born. Apparantly, they soon moved back to Braal, because in Rokk’s teens a tremendous depression struck that planet and he, his parents, and his brother Pol were thrust into poverty. Since people on that planet are considered adults at age 14, Rokk went to Earth to use his magnetic power in industry to raise money for his family.
On the ship to Earth, he met Garth Ranzz, with whom he later shared a room. With the aid of Imra Ardeen, the two boys stopped an assassination attempt on billionaire R.J. Brande. This led to their forming the Legion of Super-Heroes with Brande’s support and encouragement.
Brande gave each Legionnaire money to support both themselves and their families (this later became the “Legion Living Allowance”), so Rokk brought his family to Earth, where the Legion was headquartered. They live in a cottage in a suburb of Metropolis. He frequently visits them and often plays Magno-ball with his younger brother. This is a type of ping-pong native to Braal played magnetically with an iron ball. His parents have been married for more than fifty years. He gave them a golden statue of the Clubhouse for their Golden Anniversary (Adventure 328).
On the cover to the first Legion story, he had a pink and black outfit similar to the current one, with baggy sleeves and a purple-tinted space helmet. In that story, as previously stated, he had magnetic eyes. (Apparantly, the magnetic emanations can come from any part of his body.) He was also leader of the Legion, a title he was to hold until Adventure 304. By the Legion’s second appearance, (Adventure 267) his costume was identical to the current one in design but was colored violet and pink instead of pink and white. His powers became those we normally associate with Cos soon after (Adventure 293), and his costume became the standard one.
Rokk has mastered Ku-Jui, a fighting technique of Braal similar to Earth’s Karate.
A Mento-Helmet can be used to harness Cosmic Boy’s magnetic power to give him powers similar to those of Saturn Girl but over a greater distance.
As an adult, he will marry Night Woman but remain active as the Legion leader.
