We always talk about them. John Censullo compiled a checklist of them in his Legion Outpost II electronic mags (in Special #1). Most of them consist of just a cover appearance, single panel or even just a t-shirt reference on a number of occasions.

I thought I would start a thread where we can share some of those one-shot panel appearances. To start, here is one from Hell and Back: A Sin City Love Story. Just a one panel appearance (page 8 of issue #7) by two Legionnaires:

I'll pass on looking for that Spidey, but that STATIC's a must-find, and I'm pretty sure I have that IRON MAN... I think that was part of the Kree/Shiar War event in the Avengers-related books. I bought the whole thing for the Imperial Guard appearances... [Embarrassed] I was so gullible then. [Wink]

I'm sure I already have the Spidey but I know I don't have the Static as I never picked up that book. And the Iron Man was during the Galatic Storm that ran through the Avengers books. It was part six IIRC.

I don't know if this belongs on this thread as it dosen't really count as an appearance, but I thought it was woth mentioning somewhere...

As I was checking in books at the library I volunteer at, I came across a book called "The DC Comics Guide to Writting Comics".

As I always do when I find a new comics-related book, I checked the index for "Legion of Super-Heroes" and found a section of the book talking about the "Levitz Grid" in the chapter describing how to juggle various subplots. The book used Levitz's run on the Baxter series as an example as to how to handle a multitude of characters and storylines.

Even better, the book also pictured one of Levitz's handwritten "character grids" he used while writting the Legion. The grid was the one he used for issues 22-27 of the Baxter series, and was apparently a way he kept track of character development over the course of multiple issues.

The grid doesn't really tell us anything we didn't already know, but I still thought it was interesting.

I liked how under the "Vi and Ayla" section of the grid Levitz wrote about how the two women discuss how their lives had changed. And I liked that Levitz called Dream Girl "Dreamy" in her section. [Smile]

Really? Cool, KC!

I'm a firm believer of the Levitz Grid. I must find this somewhere. Geoff Johns is the only other guy I know can handle all those characters and do a good job.

Hmm, the Kree derivation seems to be an upside-down version of Interlac. (at least in the first panel) I got tired of hanging from the ceiling, but I picked out the words "you should" and I think "swell" and "proud of you" ... can't make out the rest...

Definitely. Someone even started a separate thread on it in which Gary posted the image.

I still need to figure out what to do with appearances like this and the ones in Superman/Batman. I collect both series and am so tempted to keep all my Legion stuff together that I feel I should break up the other series to keep the Legion intact.

This one may have been noted somewhere, but here it is from "Dr. Empirical" at the Klordny Yahoo group:

"Today, I discovered a new book I've never seen on anyone's lists. I pulled it out of the dollar bin at Baltimore Con last week. It's Action Comics 437, 100-Page Superspectacular. In the lead story, Green Arrow is imprisoned in the Fortress of Solitude, and escapes in a Legion Time Bubble. We know it's a Legion device, because it's conveniently labeled with a placard in the museum-like fortress. The bubble appears in two panels, and "Legion of Super-Heroes" is clearly spelled out on the label. If you're geeky enough to collect Booster Gold appearances because he wears a flight ring, you MUST own this book."

Well, anyone that devoted might want to know that Batman and Superman mention a Legion flight ring in "JLA #1"

Scott,
I always bought two issues of something if it was a book I collected that had a Legion appearance. One to keep with that series (say the Teen Titans/Legion Crossover that launched the new reboot). One would be filed with the Teen Titans, the other with my Legion stuff.

My Legion collection is the only thing I'm "that AR" about to buy two issues if there is a crossover or guest appearance in an issue I would have bought anyway.

It's actually a pretty funny issue too, although Wolverine is a bit over the top in talking down to Superman.

From the upper lefthand corner... recognizable Legion characters are Tellus in the back and (possibly) Double-Header in the front right.

 -

From the upper right corner, a smorgasbord of Legion villains: Omen, Sunlord, Tyr, Infinite Man, Lucifer 7 and Pulsar Stargrave; possibly Ornitho of the Wanderers at the far right.

 -

Comet Queen!

And finally, two Khunds... Kharlak, I think, and the purple dude.

I hesitate to look any harder for more references... my eyes and brain ache from the horror that is Liefeld. Plenty of Star Wars refs, though...

Heads up! Solo #7, which comes out tomorrow (26th), apparently has some cameos of the Adventure-era Legionnaires in it. See this article at Pulse; the preview pages show Supergirl doing the twist with a phantom-zoned Mon-El, and a (miscolored) Proty on the same page. And the alternate cover take shows Ferro Lad.

When someone gets this tomorrow, could you give more details? It was already on my pull list, but I won't be able to get it until later in the week.

I recognize the Legionaires, (Imra and Jeckie both look like they have the power of Super Sexiness, not that Shady's any slouch) and the Marvel's, great pictures of Mary and Junior, Bulletman and Bullegirl, SpySmasher, the Earth-2 Dynamic Duo... is that Sargon the sorcerer? Who are the other two in the bottom corner, and does anyone recognize that guy above LL's right shoulder, in the arc of the big red cheese's's arm?

I loved these stries growing up, the annual team-up's were always my favorite thing about the JLA, which pound for pound may have (at the time) been my favorite book?

The two guys behind Batman and Robin are Mr. Scarlet and Pinky, a Facett Comics answer to the Dynamic Duo.

The guy who looks like Sargon is Ibis the Invincible, a Fawcett magic-based character.

The guy above LL's shoulder is the anatagonist of one of the team-ups, and to say more would spoil the weirdness of it all.

Have you guys ever watched the Nickelodeon cartoon "Fairly Oddparents"? It's about Timmy Turner, a 10 year old boy who's life is so bad (parents who often ignore him and cluelessly leave him in the care of a wickedly mean babysitter) that he winds up being given fairy godparents to make things better. Timmy can wish for almost anything (but hey, there are rules...and often disaterous results). My kids watch it most every day, and the reason I bring it up is because of an obvious Legion homage I caught the other day, while watching it with them.

In one particular espisode, Timmy wished that everyone in the world had super powers. Two of his geeky friends end up with the following "can't-help-but-be-Legionesque" abilities:
Chester, a kid with braces, becomes "Matter-Muncher Lad", who can eat through anything, and Elmer, a kid with a large boil on his face becomes "Bouncing Boil".

Coincidence? I think not!! [Smile]

The episode was called "The Big Superhero Wish" and originally aired Feb 16,2004. If anybody wants to see it, time may be running out as the series ceased production in Oct 2005, so there are no new episodes (with the exception of a Jimmy Neutron crossover movie coming this June 2006, which will also be the series finale of JN as well). No telling how much longer Nick will keep it on their schedule.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

As I mentioned in the Adv. #247 Homages thread I recently discovered an AR collectible that I've never heard of. I've even searched the web (but not scoured) and not found any references to it.

Everyone knows, or should know, of the TMK postcards issued back in 1990. Most recently we had some new postcards done for giving away at conventions to hype the new Superman and the Legion of Super Heroes cartoon. It was during one of my searches for the latter on eBay that I stumbled across yet another set of Legion postcards. These cards were only released in the UK and, in so much as I could tell, only in the London area.

In 1991 a company called London Editions Magazines began releasing a weekly magazine-sized color reprint of DC comics called Heroes. Heroes contained three stories, six to seven pages in length, taken from previouly published issues of The Brave and the Bold, The Blue Devil and The Legion of Super-Heroes. The Legion story was "The Soul-Thief from the Stars", originally published in LSH vol. 2 #284 in February of 1982. The reprint on the slick, white magazine print is quite nice, much better than my original copy.

The first three issues also featured a free give-away attached to the outside of the magazine. Two postcards reprinting older Legion comic book covers! These were thin cardstock cover reprints that appear to have been scanned from someone's collection (you can clearly see a store's ink stamp price on some of them). On the reverse was the issue # and date as well as a quick history/synopsis of the cover and an indication as to which issue of Heroes the card came from. These were actually meant to be mailed and have all the markings you would see on a real postcard.

There were a total of six Legion cover postcards done, two on each of the first three issues. Inside of issue #3 was a statement that the run was over with a request to send in suggestions for the next set. I can find no evidence of issue #4 or subsequent issues being released.

Throwing caution to the wind (one of the two UK sellers originally didn't want to ship to the US) I bid and won both lots I found on eBay. One for a copy of the first issue and one for a set of the first three. The single issue came with the postcards detached and laminated, one from issue #1 and one from issue #2. The set of three came with the cards still attached and I committed the gravest of sins, I separated the cards from the magazines. These are over 15 years old and are not acid-free so have already started down that road of all paper products not meant for archiving. I'm still trying to figure out if I want to laminate them myself, as the previous owner did with the others, or if I just want to seal them in mylar and put them with my books.

Either way, I am now in possession of what I'm calling my first true Legion AR find that appears to have been lost to the ages. And will, below, share scans of the front and back of the cards as well as the cover to the issue it was attached to. Enjoy. [Smile]

Scott.

After we spoke I looked on e bay too and found another set of issues 2 and 3 for sale so bought them as well. Unfortunatly only #2 had the post cards attached.

Turns out from looking at the interiors that a lot of the Legion information came from a friend of mine in APA247. Small world eh?

Iwill ask him if the company made any more after #3.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Darden, my offer still stands. You can have my extra copy of #1 along with the postcard for it. Since it only has one card for the issue and you have the cards for #2 I'll probably give that extra card to someone else (Gary? [Smile] )

I was wondering if anyone we knew was involved when I saw a lot of stuff seemed to be from fans. I also forgot to mention that #2 and #3 also have reprints from DC's Who's Who with various Legionnaires. I'll probably wind up scanning all the issues just so I have them in my electronic collection as well.

Any info you can find out about books beyond #3 would be great. Even if they didn't do any more Legion cards I'd still like to get #4 for the conclusion of the Soul-Thief story.

Thanks, LL!

One time I googled "Saturn Girl" and I found one of my photomanipulations of her. It was used on a site where the guy was basically roasting the sexy uniforms worn by the Legion. He was pretty brutal to our poor Cos. Oh, he also made a comment about how it's great that on the internet, hormonal 14 year olds create photomanips of supermodels into superheroines. I think I'll take that as a compliment! (Though I know it's not.)

I'll have to do that search again and find the link.

"I'm telling you, this was a good time to be reading the Legion, If, you know, you planned on growing up to be a pervert."

wasn't really my plan at the time

What a great article! I completely agree with the author's rant, except for the line where he says Mike Grell's Cosmic Boy costume was partially pink when we all know the black bits were all there was to it.

Comic Foundry magazine, a new comics mag that just published its first issue last week, has an interview with Yuri Lowenthal. Great pic of him and of Superman, even if it is black and white.

Okay, I know this thread may be a bit jumbled, date-wise, now but we have one thread for all Legion AR appearances. I may have missed a couple that didn't specifically state "Legion AR" in their title but we can work those as found.

So if you have an AR appearance you have found, post it here. Please don't start a new thread for it.

Thanks to everyone who spots these appearances and lets us know about them!

Possible AR appearance in this month's solicits... BACK ISSUE #25 has an article on those LEGENDS of the SUPER-HEROES TV specials. Wasn't Mordru in the cast?

DCBS has it listed as a special at $2.78 (60% off).

There's an appearance of the Legion statues in the current issue of Superman (#670) during a fight in the Fortress of Solitude (Mon-El gets knocked over). It's story page 29.

We all know that author Michael Chabon is a comics fan, based on his novel "The Amazing Adventures of Kavelier and Clay," right.

But did you know that the Legion is on his four color radar?

In Chabon's collection of short stories, "Werewolves In Their Youth," the first sentence of the first story mentions Matter-Eater Lad.

The final panel of Brave and the Bold #8 has a Legion cameo. A hand, formed from the pages of the Book of Destiny has numerous pictures from the book. One can see the Luck Lords, the Emerald Eye, and Micro Lad/Colossal Boy. You really need to look, but in my AR-mindedness, this one counts! [Smile]

One of my favorite parodies-

Normal Man

The futuristic Legion of Superfluous Heroes also made major appearances in the book, but since roll call was required before the team went into action, and the team was so darn big to begin with, they didn’t actually do anything but the roll call. For seven issues.

The November Back Issue magazine, #25, has an article on the live action Legends of the Super-Heroes, including several black and white photos of Mordru.

I was playing around with my Windows Media Center last night, recording shows and looking through the guide. For some reason I was looking through the kids shows option and Nic came up. I paged through a few hours and The Fairly OddParents showed up. It just happened to be "The Big Superhero Wish!". Couldn't believe my luck. Set it to record (was on at 5:30 AM) and have edited out the commercials. Currently encoding it to play on my iPhone so I can watch it at work tomorrow.

say, wasn't there a new Persuader seen recently in Teen Titans, I believe this month, as a member of Terror Titans?

Not too bad. MML and BB got a couple of funny moments. I thought it a worthy addition to my AR collection. [Smile]

say did anyone get the Green Lantern Secret Origins and File recently? It was sold out in my CBS so I wonder if there are some mentions in GL about Daxamites, Tellus's race, and anything that came from the Legion Lore?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

add Green Lantern Secret Files and Origin to the AR list as I have been told recently by a friend of mine saying that there have been some mentions of Legion Planets there in that book such as Daxam, Durla, Dryad, and others. Thought that it may be a good one. i do not have it yet since CBS sold out on that book. I am looking for it in Ebay and hopefully will snipe for a good price.

In Booster Gold #8 (June 2008), story page 11 has a panel at Vanishing Point (normally the home of the Linear Men, but currently occupied by Despero, Per Degaton, and Black Beetle). On one of the monitors in the background, there is a scene of the three founders talking with a young Clark Kent.

Guys, if anyone has a copy of "Big Bang Comics" 18, with the Pantheon of Heroes, it would really help if someone could scan the scenes with a character named Snowstar.

In Super Friends #25, the Venturans kidnap the Super Friends for their "Super Olympics of Space". They compete against teams of Daxamites (all dressed like Mon-el), Durlans and Dryads (who all look like Blok).

The latest issue of the Comics Buyers Guide is an all-Legion issue with pages and pages of Legion interviews and discussions. Any AR fan may want to check it out.

I think any longtime Legion Worlder would know just about everything Legion already but its still cool. My only complaint is there is too much space devoted to Legion continuity but that's just because I have so many years of online Legion fandom having beaten this topic to death. Any casual Legion reader would find it fascinating. That portion is done by Captain Comics, Andrew Smith.

Mr. Silver Age does a nice round-up of all Super-Pets appearances.

The Great Darkness Saga is analyzed issue by issue in the back.

A pretty fun read. I've been reading CBG since I was like 12 years old so I was delighted to see a Legion-centric issue.

Here's a li'l tidbit from the article:

"According to ACTION #862, Earth Man killed Double-Header, blinded Color Kid, and threw Infectious Lass through time( to show up unexpectedly in TALES of the UNEXPECTED ).
Levitz says he has no immediate plans for the Legion of Substitute Heroes, so how much of the above is still true will remain unknown for a while."

on ADVENTURE COMICS:

"Geoff challenged me to do a book's worth of stories that could be given to a new reader as a way into the Legion."
"The story, 'Brande Speaks' in ADV.#517 has real background for the tale that I expect will be the primary plot in LEGION #6... and I expect the unrevealed details of Saturn Girl's early LSH days in 'Saturn Rising'(ADV.#518) will set up some new tensions to be resolved in current times."

Character bio and history accompanied by artwork from over the years.

In the past it has been things like Origin, Villains and Classic Stories.

Also do not forget there are still figurines to Garth and Imra to come.

<--is wondering why the DCline is more expensive than the Marvel figurines when they're all made by Eaglemoss UK... CMFC Drax and Annihilus are $12 ea., while Cos and Black Lightning are $14 apiece. [Hmmm?]

thats what I mentioned in other thread...heres the link - -

also the next one will be Saturn Girl and then Lightning Lad.

I hope to see all the Legionnaires to be made !!!

Those figurines are quite nice, and the booklets are helpful too. I only have She-Hulk and Starfire thus far, the booklets really gave a nice overview of their troubled pasts...

Nice to see some Legion there at last. Unfortunately, I doubt that we will get much more than the founders. Reminds me of the DC Direct line which suddenly stopped doing Legion (and shied away from most female Legionnaieres from the beginning...)

Posted by Outdoor Miner on :

Depends on sales, I'm sure.

I don't know if the deal with DC has been extended past the initial run of figures, but if it does get extended I'd be surprised not to see more Legion.
