Continuing from this thread.

Current Question:

What hero's origin involves receiving the gift of a "robot brain" from a dying alien in a crashed flying saucer?

Hints:

This is a character from a short-lived series from the early 50s created by Wally Wood whose name is Captain "X", where "X" stands for a broad concept.

It is not Captain Cyborg, Captain Comet, Captain Universe, Captain Canuck, Captain Robot, or Captain Thunder, or Captain Freedom.

Captain Future?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not Captain Future, though Captain Future is awesome!

Posted by Blacula on :

Captain Scarlet?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Nope, it's not a name with a color.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Captain UFO?

Captain Caveman... oh wait.

Captain... Science?

Captain Atomic

IB has it right!

It's Captain Science!

^^Note this is over nine years before the debut of Hal Jordan.

Posted by Xben on :

Far out!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Like, way far.

Not as flashy as Hal Jordan's, but cool nonetheless!

Who is "key-chain"?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Clue - it's a nickname given to a Justice Leaguer.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Snapper Carr?

Posted by Blacula on :

Hawkman?

Posted by Xben on :

Green Lantern?

Posted by KryptonKid on :

Wonder Woman

(I'm thinking she lassoed the Key, and Atom or someone called her that. Just guessing.)

Posted by Xben on :

I was thinking GL maybe because he might have been carrying everyone else

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope.

Another hint: it's based on that Leaguer's real name.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Dr. Light--as given to her by Wally!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

You got it, Cobie [Big Grin] That was a nice bonding moment between those two heroes.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Agreed! [Yes]

In a similar vain--most characters refer to the Hulk's alter ego as Bruce. But one person used to regularly call him 'Bobby'. Who & Why?

Posted by Xben on :

Here's a wild guess - was it Bruce's grandfather, who called him that because his real name was Robert and he'd call him Bobby when he was a kid?

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Wrong character but exactly the right reason!

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

No more takers? To keep it moving I'll hint that the character is *not* from the Silver Age.

Posted by Reboot on :

It was the prim guy from the Pantheon (Paris?), because no-one ever had called Robert Bruce Banner "Bobby".

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Got it! And indeed, it was Paris, who was an empath.

What is the Mahd Wy'ry?

Posted by ActorLad on :

The mental condition (madness) that Eternals are susceptible to, correct?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Going back one question, I just wanted to say nobody ever called him Robert either until the TV series. Bruce must have just not been macho enough for a 70's TV lead.

Though that could be precisely why Stan Lee picked the name in the first place, to contrast with untramuscular Hulk.

And now, back to your game...

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Shining Son, I also think at the time of the TV show "Bruce" was something of a slang for a gay man. So there was a little bit of homophobia behind the name change IMHO

Posted by Reboot on :

Bruce became "Robert Bruce" Banner simply because Stan Lee went a whole story in TTA calling him "Bob Banner". Same way the second story in ASM #1 stars "Peter Palmer", Lee has always had a bad memory - so many early Marvel characters named by him have alliterative names as an aide mémoire for him - clearly though, not a foolproof one! This one, they codified rather than ignored.

He was actually David Banner for the TV series, but yes, probably for the same reason.

It seems there's an increased tendency to introduce offspring of super-heroes these days in main continuity, what's the name of Doctor Strange's kid?

Bump.

Posted by Xben on :

Abigail Strange

Posted by ActorLad on :

Forgot it was still my turn. That's incorrect but I will confirm that said offspring is female.

Posted by Blacula on :

Bump again.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Ok, I did a google search. I came up with Sofia Strange.

Posted by ActorLad on :

Sofia Strange it is, she appeared in the most recent and extremely short-lived Epic Anthology.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Who wanted to be known as Chick Andrews?

Posted by Blacula on :

Archie?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Correct. Archie asks Betty to call him that in the first issue. She ignores that and keeps calling him Archie

Posted by Blacula on :

I have no idea how I knew that.

Question - Milou is the original (and still current in some parts of the world) name of which comics animal?

Snowy?

I thought a non-American might get this one.

Over to you, Reboot.

Yep.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

It certainly sounds like an interesting premise. Alas, it can be difficult to find some titles here...

I've been looking for some good local titles which have been out of print for a couple of years. Been scouring back issue bins, but... [Frown]

Anyway,

Doctor Light has never been the friendliest of heroes, but there was one Justice Leaguer in particular she called incompetent (they later made up, though). Who was this Leaguer?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Guy Gardner?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nope (funnily enough, I can't recall a time when these two bickered. I think it's because Kimiyo had her milder personality at the time she and Guy were on the team together).

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Batman?

Posted by Blacula on :

Flash (Wally West)?

Posted by Xben on :

Vixen?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Power Girl?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

IB, you around?

*bumping the thread up so IB notices it*

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Whoops! Sorry, and thanks for the bump lance [Smile]

No, not Batman (oddly enough, the only issue I have of Kimiyo and Batman interacting show her to be very impressed with him).

No, not Wally (these two bonded during their JLE days).

Not Vixen - Vixen did call Kimiyo out a couple of times, but Kimiyo didn't bite back.

Not Power Girl - these two were quite close during their JLE days.

Hint - this Leaguer wasn't a member during Kimiyo's lengthy JLE stint.

Posted by Xben on :

Red Arrow?

Posted by Blacula on :

Booster Gold?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Dr. Fate?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No to all three.

Another hint - this Leaguer fought back, resulting in him/her and Kimiyo bickering over the course of the story they appeared in together. They ended the story with some level of mutual respect, though.

Incorrect guesses -

Batman
Flash (Wally)
Guy Gardner
Power Girl
Vixen
Red Arrow
Booster Gold
Dr. Fate

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Also, as far as I can tell, Kimiyo and this other Leaguer only appeared together for a short period of time.

Posted by Blacula on :

I was thinking this event happened during her JLE days, but I've just remembered she ws a member of the JLA before that. So with that in mind I'll guess Black Canary.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No, it wasn't Black Canary.

This event also didn't happen while she was with the JLI (when Max Lord recruited her) or the second formation of the JLE.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

No takers?

Another hint - this character was on the team at the same time as Kimiyo for a very short period of time. Maybe 6 issues. And this character WASN'T on the team during Kimiyo's first stint (the JLI/JLE days).

Posted by Blacula on :

My Dr Light history is all muddled. I always associate her with JLE so I forget that she put stints in with JLA/JLI and the more recent JLofA too.

If I'm understanding the clues correctly -

The two characters were only teammates for a short period - and this wasn't during the JLA/JLI/JLE days. Which means it must have occurred during her recent (Robinson-era I think) JLofA stint?

Since James Robinson-written JLA is as enjoyable as pouring acid on my face I'm afraid I'm not that familiar Kimiyo's goings-on during that time so I'll guess... Supergirl?

Posted by Xben on :

How about...Firestorm?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Blacula, you understood correctly. Lucikly, this eliminates the majority of Leaguers.

It wasn't Supergirl.

Good guess on Firestorm, but while Kimiyo was somewhat dismissive of him (at first), she never outright insulted him - unlike the hero I'm thinking of. If I remember right, Kimiyo actually said about this hero - "I deserve a more competent teammate" or something to that effect.

Batman
Flash (Wally)
Guy Gardner
Power Girl
Vixen
Red Arrow
Booster Gold
Dr. Fate
Black Canary
Supergirl
Firestorm

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

[Bump]

Another hint - this Leaguer was also a member of the Watchtower League.

Posted by Xben on :

Huntress?

Posted by Blacula on :

Plastic Man?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Blacula has it!

Plastic Man returned to help the JLA against the Royal Flush Gang. When Vixen had the 2 team up, Kimiyo commented on how she deserved more competent company - prompting an angry response from Plas.

They had each other's mutual respect by the end of the story, though.

Most people know that the last name of Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred is Pennyworth. But that wasn't his original last name. What was the last name of the Earth 2 Alfred?

Posted by Blacula on :

Clue - it is also a breed of dog.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Dalmatian?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Beagle

Posted by Blacula on :

Beagle it is/was!

Your Q, SS!

Posted by Shining Son on :

In the “first” fight between Superman and Captain Marvel, it was actually an alternate Cap that was not from Earth-S and that we’ve never seen before or since to my knowledge. Answer any two of the following:

What was his hero name?

What was his secret identity?

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen
What gave him his powers?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Oh, I think I know this. It was also an alternate Superman.

It was Captain Marbles aka the unknown monster. His alter ego was Billy Spafon, boy reporter. And his power came from the magical word SHAZOOM. Standing for: Strength; Health; Aptitude; Zeal; Ox, power of; Ox, power of another; and Money.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Stuporman vs Captain Marbles may indeed have come first, but I'm thinking of the fight between the actual Superman of Earth-One and a non-spoof alternate Cap, in a story published by DC in one of Supes's own magazines.

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

I think I know the answer to one of your questions: Captain Thunder?

Can't remember his secret identity or what gave him his powers, though.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

I used to have that issue.

It was Captain Thunder.
Billy Fawcett?
I don't remember what gave him his powers. Was it his belt?

I do recall "Sha-boom" was either his magic word, the sound of his change, or both.

Posted by Shining Son on :

It was indeed Capt Thunder, which as many know, was Capt Marvel's name in Whiz #1, which was only printed as an ashcan edition.

HWW gets an honorary mention but Kent managed not only the minimum, but everything he said was right.

I was going to ask which Earth he was from, but in those days they generally weren't mentioned except in lettercols and fandom, so it wouldn't have been a fair question. It's listed somewhere as Earth-T (for Thunder) but I like the Marvel Family Page's designation of Earth-F (for Fauxcett!) much better.

He changed by rubbing his belt bucket while saying Thunder. Sha-boom was indeed the sound of the explosion that transformed him.

Take it away Mr Shakespeare, Sir!

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

I happily defer to Kent's expertise.

I think it's quite remarkable that I remember the issue at all. I don't think I ever owned it. I read it at a friend's house! Even at that young age, I knew Captain Thunder was supposed to be Captain Marvel.

Thanks for the memory, SS!

Posted by Shining Son on :

More than just a game,
it's a trip down memory lane.

Glad you enjoyed thinking about the story. Or are you just thrilled that you have any memories from that long ago? [Smile]

I am fairly certain that issue did not specify which Earth. I do recall a much-later (years later) letercol or perhaps Bob Rozakis' "Ask the Answer Man" column where someone wrote in asking, but even the editor/answerer was speculating on the Earth-T response, extrapolating off of Earth-S.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

On what comic book character's alternate Earth is it always 1965?

Posted by Shining Son on :

I don't remember the year, but I do remember Zot! had that concept.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Zot! it is!

and here I thought this would be another one I thought was easy but no one else would.

Go, Sonny!

Posted by Shining Son on :

Well any question is easy if you happen to know the answer.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Which DC character's civilian identity became both an agent of SHIELD and a title character in Amalgam Comics?

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Batman.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Correct, Bruce Wayne, Agent of SHIELD.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

What Golden-Age villainous identity was taken over by a former classmate of Ronnie Raymond?

Posted by Blacula on :

The Thinker a.k.a. Cliff Carmichael

(and I wanna say the Golden Age identity was like Roscoe Dillon or something).

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Correct, Blacula.

(But incorrect about the other matter, Roscoe Dillon was the Silver-Age Flash's enemy the Top. The Thinker was Clifford DeVoe.)

Posted by Blacula on :

That's right! I had the name Roscoe DeVoe in my head for some reason but I knew that wasn't correct. Not sure why I was getting him confused with the Top?

Sticking with Cliff Carmichael -

Who ended up killing him in the old DCU?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Killer Frost?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

wow, Cliff became an actual villain and then got killed? To me, Firestorm ended when Ronnie went off to college.

But I will guess, for the hell of it...

Hyena?

Posted by Shining Son on :

"old DCU" is a little vague. [Smile]

Posted by Blacula on :

^ SS - I was tempted to write the "good" DCU. [Wink] But then remembered that by the time Cliff died, the taint of Didio had infected way too much of the brand for me to call it "good" anymore.

Kent - yeah, Cliff became a real grade-A scumbag villain after the Firestorm series. I quite enjoyed him in the role (but that may have just been because the series that used him as such was so good) but you're right in that nothing beats those early Firestorm adventures. [Smile]

Not Killer Frost or Hyena.

Clue: it wasn't a Firestorm villain (or a villain at all actually).

Posted by Xben on :

Bronze Tiger?

Posted by Blacula on :

^ Right book. Wrong character. [Smile]

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Amanda Waller?

Posted by Blacula on :

IIRC The Thinker (Cliff) was trying to killer her when he got shot by this other character.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Rick Flag?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I think I know which issue that was in, but I can't remember who... Hm, Plastique?

Posted by Blacula on :

Not:

Killer Frost
Hyena
Bronze Tiger
Amanda Waller
Rick Flag
Plastique

Posted by Shining Son on :

King Faraday?

Posted by Blacula on :

^ That's who it was.

Over to you SS.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Just goes to show, once you give enough hints and enough of the wrong guesses are eliminated, then anything's possible.

Other than the classic Captain Marvel (or any other connected marvels, or anyone ever published by DC or Fawcett for that matter) name a title character of a series that wears a red shirt, has a yellow lightning bolt symbol, and squints.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Hmm, I got a notification that Kent posted a reply, but when I click on the link, I find none here.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Yes, i re-read the question and realized my guess did not fit the criteria. So i deleted it.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Oh!

D'oh! I forgot about someone i recently used in a question!

Zot!

Posted by Shining Son on :

Well I must say I'm surprised you didn't get it right off the bat.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Yeah, my mind went to Golden Age characters at first.

What comic book character was a pop star who got excommunicated by the Pope?

Posted by Shining Son on :

I had to stop myself from using it immediately after your Zot question. Guess that strategy worked.

Posted by Shining Son on :

The only pop star in comics that comes immediately to mind is Dazzler, but if she were ever excommunicated I'd think I might have heard about it.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Not Dazzler, nor any character that had a series in their own name.

Posted by Blacula on :

I'm not sure why this character popped into my head since I've never actually read the book, but is it that Princess Diana-replacement character that Peter Milligan used in his X-Statix book? Henrietta something I think.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

One of the "Scare Tactics" bunch, maybe? I'll guess Scream Queen.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Nope.
I don't even know the Scare Tactics gang by name.

It is from a DC book from the same era, and there is a vampire in the cast.

Never read X-Statix.

Not a female character.

Your question doesn't have to be that good, LL. [Wink]

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

maybe it's a ploy - we have to guess what Lardy's question is!

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

my answer to Lardy's question: Journey into Mystery #94 when Jane Foster mistakenly believes Don Blake to be gay.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Mistakenly?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

My answer to Lardy's question: Phil Foglio, because Sergio Aragones wouldn't do that for a dollar.

Hmmm....my own Google search shows that there may be some confusion in the question as stated. I'm gonna edit the original question slightly for clarification.

And, yes, please guess from memory or hard copy research (i.e. the books, damnit!), please!

This is all unknown to me so I will randomly guess -

It was a spaceship.
It blew up.
It gave us Magnus, Robot-Fighter.

Interesting guess, but not what I was looking for.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Okay, small hint: This is not an obscure story/character at all. I chose to focus on something less well-known about it to make it seem hard!

Posted by Blacula on :

Another guess -

It was a life pod.
It crashed on Earth.
Supergirl emerged from it.

That would be the one! (The ship was a space shuttle and, technically, it was Jamaica Bay it crashed in, but I ain't splittin' hairs!) See guys--it weren't so hard! [Big Grin]

Yer up, Xben!

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Well, Jamaica Bay is directly connected to the ocean, at least. My parents had a funny story about boating there with friends many decades ago, and getting lost in the marshes at night.

Posted by Xben on :

It was the fact that "new" was in quotation marks that made me think of it.

New question soon.

Posted by Xben on :

With what hero were Dave Lincoln, Victor Lanza, Claudia Shane, and Harvey Lockman associated with?

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Hm. Don't recognize them, so I'm thinking pulp characters for some reason. So....Doc savage?

Yep, that was a significant part of the clue!

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

I'll guess the Shadow

Posted by Xben on :

Neither is correct, although I can see how a list of names like that is a bit reminiscent of Doc Savage's band of helpers.

HINT: It's a character owned by one of the Big Two.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

I think it is Orion.

Posted by Xben on :

That's it. He rescued the four normal humans from Apokolips (I think they were scanning their brains for clues to the anti-life equation) and they became his little entourage on earth in his ongoing war against Darkseid's minions. I haven't read the all of Kirby's New God's yet, so I don't know where (if anywhere) it all ends up for them.

They're a funny group of characters because just about each issue they seem to feel compelled to mention their own names out loud, and talk about how out of their depth they are (eg, "What about it Lincoln? I'm Claudia Shane, simple but worried secretary! What am I involved in this time--?" "And me, young but cool, Harvey Lockman!" etc.)

they do seem like 70sish sort of names.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

I actually remember the name Dave Lincoln and knowing it was from one of the big two sparked the memory. I actually almost said the Forever People, but then realized Xben said "hero".

My question:

Name the heroes who teamed-up with Batman in The Brave and the Bold at least 5 times.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

How many are we looking for, Quis?

Posted by Blacula on :

I'll start the ball rolling -

The Metal Men
Green Arrow
Wildcat
...

Lardy, By my reckoning 9 co-stars fit this bill. 7 others fall short with just 4 appearances.

Blacula is correct for 2 of his 3 guesses.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Alrighty, let's go for it:

Green Arrow
Wonder Woman
Metamorpho
Elongated Man
Wildcat
Hawkman
Aquaman
Flash
Green Lantern

You have 5 correct answers.

And of your wrong answers, 3 of them were of the 4 appearances.

Are teams included in this question, Quis? Or just solo heroes? 'Cause, from memory, it almost seems like every fourth issue in my B&B collection is a Metal Men team up.

If not, here are my guesses for the +5 appearances:

Green Arrow
Wildcat
Green Lantern
Aquaman
Flash
Wonder Woman
Spectre
Adam Strange
The Atom

And for fun, here are my guesses for the 4 appearances:

Hawkman
Metamorpho
Plastic Man
Black Canary

Blacula,

You have 6 of the 9. And yes, teams are included. I will also give this part up. The only team that had at least 5 appearances was the Metal Men.

I won't comment of your 4 appearances guesses as that would necessarily give you clues as to the at least 5 appearances. I will say that one hero topped them all with 10 appearances.

Posted by Blacula on :

^ haha. I knew I wasn't imagining all those Metal Men team-ups. [Smile]

OK, here's another go -

+5 appearances -

Metal Men
Green Arrow
Flash
Green Lantern (who I think has the most)
Aquaman
Atom
Wonder Woman
Black Canary
Sgt Rock

(And for my own fun):

4 appearances -

Wildcat
Metamorpho
Hawkman
Teen Titans

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Well Blacula, you are mostly correct. You got all 9, but it is Green Arrow who scores the most appearances.

Also, it was 7 others who were the 4 appearances. Those being: Teen Titans, Deadman, Plastic Man, Wildcat, Metamorpho, Hawkman, Spectre

Posted by Blacula on :

^ Deadman, of course! I think I'd mentioned all the others at one point or another but I totally forgot about him.

Brave & Bold was such a fun comic. I wonder why team-up books aren't as popular anymore.

OK, here's my Q -

Sherman Hemsley (recently deceased lead actor from 70s/80s hit comedy, The Jeffersons) once played which Superman villain on screen?

The Toyman, on Lois and Clark.
with Isabel Sanford as his assistant.

^ Winner again!

I was really surprised when I read that in his obituary. Very out-of-left field casting.

And by my reckoning, that makes Winslow Schott, Toyman, one of the very few Superman villains to have received a live-action portrayal on screen (the others being the obvious Lex Luthor and the Phantom Zone trio of course), because, for some annoying reason, most Lois and Clark and early Smallville episodes tended to shy away from official comics villains. I remember Mr. Mxyzptlk turned up on the old Superboy series once or twice and a few more showed up on later seasons of Smallville, but for the most part they've been really ignored unfortunately.

Your Q, Kent.

okay... I am going to twist the rules, since many of my potential Qs are more obscure than many of your central areas of interest.

I am going to offer up five - yes, five - questions. Whoever correctly answers ONLY ONE of them wins the round.

1. What limited series, generally but not always considered outside of regular DCU continuity, presented DC's first lesbian character in 1984?

OR

2. Who killed Bran MacMuffin?

OR

3. What comic book character was exiled from Zimbabwe just as that nation took form?

OR

4. In what 1980s comic book could one find a villain named P.J. Harvey?

OR

5. In what comic book was there a small town that, as a tourist attraction, held a funeral for a five-legged cow every day?

please specify which question you are answering.

1. Sun Devils?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Quis, no and no.

Xben, yes! Sun Devils. Miste was the specific character.

Posted by Xben on :

I don't remember Miste in particular, but the clue was (other than the year) the fact that it is only occasionally considered part of DC's main continuity. I remember Rik Sunn, his potential girlfriend and his enemy all showing up in a Dan Jurgens Superman story that sort of helped to wreck my memory of the original mini series.

I have no idea about your other questions, although P.J. Harvey is a vaguely familiar name.

I'll have a new question soon.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Was that Sun Devils character before Camelot 3000?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

It was not. But since Tristan was a man trapped in a woman's body, s/he was more transgender than a lesbian per se, imho. Similarly, Isolde was in love wirh Tristan; gender seemed to be secondary to her, not a matter of preference.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Sun Devils were also mentioned in a 52-related story, but apparently did not appear.

Irene Meriwether was sort of a Lois Lane-variant to what semi-analog to Superman? And what comic series did these characters appear in?

Not Supersonic. I don't recall who that character is. But it is Astro City. I'll give a hint - the character's nicknames was "Tom."

Samaritan, then?

Posted by Blacula on :

Supersonic was the grey-suited, older hero who appeared in an issue of Local Heroes... and now that I've written that, I realise he wasn't actually the character I meant to put for this question. I was actually thinking of that other character from Local Heroes - the one who wears a black and silver (I think) costume. I can't remember what his name is.

Not Samaritan. I think probably Blacula is on the right track.

Is "Mechanics" a series? [Confused]

In any case that's not what I'm looking for. Basically, I partially answered my own question by revealing all the characters were from the same series and that they didn't appear anywhere else. So what we're left with here is the name of the series.

So, to clarify slightly, we'll give another clue:

Clue #2: The series I'm looking for is not part of a shared universe (i.e. it's not a DCU, Marvel U, Charlton, etc. book). That's what I meant by "self-contained".

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Mechanics was a follow-up miniseries to Love And Rockets. That was my shot in the dark.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Clue #3: The series in questioned ended this year.

Man! Not even a guess?!?!

Okay, let's see if this rings a bell before the clues get TOO obvious:

Clue #4: The lead character's name is Matty Roth, and he's a journalist.

I've never read it but that name sounds familiar...

DMZ?

Posted by Lard Lad on :

It's kind of sad to me that this excellent series is so under the radar that it took so many clues to get the answer. Trust me, guys, DMZ is a worthy member of the Vertigo pantheon of geat series. Try it, whydontcha?

Your question, Blacula!

These are the secret identities/real names of 25 DC characters that are used in the Spanish translations of DC comics. The first person to give me the regular, English name of all 25 characters gets the next question.

1. Bruno Diaz

So you got all but three!

Funnily enough, Ray Palmer's name in the Spanish comics is... Ray Palmer! Other characters who have the same name in both languages include Clark Kent and Ronnie Raymond.

P.S. For some reason I just totally love the identity of "Bruno Diaz" for Batman! He really needs to use it if he ever goes undercover in Argentina or something!

Next question:

Harold Hamgravy was once engaged to whom?

Posted by Shining Son on :

That name just screams oldtime Popeye series, so I'll guess Olive Oyl.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Harold Hamgravy, also known simply as Ham Gravy, was indeed engaged to Olive Oil. In fact, he was the original star of Thimble Theater, before gradually losing his place, first being outshone by Olive's brother Castor, and eventually, a decade after the strip began, by new character Popeye. He may have ended up only as a minor character in Popeye, but he yam what he yam.

^ Dos that mean Olive Oil predates Popeye? That's interesting. I never knew that. It seems kinda like Lois Lane predating Superman - a bit weird.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Yes, Olive was not Popeye's supporting character, she was a strip mainstay from the beginning, Popeye just breezed in years later and was what we call nowadays a breakout character.

Sticking with Popeye for the nonce, which character made endless trouble for Popeye because he wasn't interested in romancing her?

What was the piece of info, and which character originating in the late Silver Age was the childhood friend?

So we now know that the info was Daredevil's secret identity. (Psst! He's Matt Murdock!)

Nope, but that's an excellent, informed guess! Ben's known who Daredevil is for quite some time, after all. But it wasn't Ben, and he's still alive.

So for another hint, think of other characters who've known DD's identity, and then think of characters close to them!

Richard Fisk, and his father the Kingpin, first appeared in Spider-Man, so that was my guess, because he even has a childhood friend, Sammy Silke. The problem was Sammy wan't a late silver age character. Plus the rest of the question didn't quite apply.

Finally I realized you're talking about Sammy, and Richard was the late silver age character who was the childhood friend in the question. In which case the piece of info was perhaps more accurately not just Spidey's ID, but the fact that Kingpin had known it for so long.

I don't recall him trying to buy the FBI's protection, but I doubt there's many other characters who fit the rest of the bill.

And no, it certainly didn't end well for him.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Correct! I was beginning to think I'd have to give initials and still wouldn't get the answer I was looking for! [Big Grin]

I reread the question, and it seems pretty clear what info I wanted. I can see how it would be misleading if you focus too much on the "underboss" part that begins it.

Sammy Silke was the "underboss" (in fact that was the title of the storyline that featured Silke and DD being outed prominently, which I put in quotes as a clue), but I really wanted to figure out how to ask a question about Richard Fisk in a way that was challenging because he was never exactly a marquee character but still fairly significant.

I could have asked something like, "What was the name of the Rose?", but I figured that was a simple Wikipedia search.

Sammy Silke used the info to secure FBI protection after he and Richard attempted a coup against Wilson Fisk/the Kingpin. This was not good enough to save him from the Kingpin's wrath, as Wilson personally found and killed Silke.

Richard was murdered around the same time by his own mother Vanessa Fisk who was fed up with Richard's frequent habit of turning against his father. (Vanessa herself died during Brubaker's run as the guilt of mudering Richard took a physical toll.) One of the most memorable eras of his rebellion was when Richard masqueraded as a rival mob boss called the Rose.

This is from the Bendis/Maleev run on Daredevil. In fact, it began with that arc, and imo, it's still the best part of their run. The consequences of DD's outing remain today, though Matt Murdock has worked hard to build up some degree of doubt in the public eye ever since. I applaud that it's never been ret-conned, magically erased or any of the other crap the Big two usually do to erase significant events!

There's a golden-age character that was reinterpreted by a different company about 3 or 4 years ago for, alas, only a few issues. What are the exact recent and golden age names for this spiky and diabolically-named hero's title?

If you can't get the exact recent name of the title, I'll settle for naming who crowded out the original from his own series.

I'm going to guess the original Daredevil is the character in question? Not sure what his new title might be. Just Devil maybe?

Not sure wo might have crowded him out of his title either. Captain Marvel?

The title of the new series circa 2009 was "The Death-Defying 'Devil"

Note the apostrophe replacing "Dare". While the character is public domain, Marvel lays claim to the name with their own Daredevil.

I would have accepted it with or without the hyphen in Death-Defying because even their own press releases forget that, but the apostrophe was pretty consistent.

In Crisis on Infinite Earth issue #9, which DC character is seen watching Clark Kent on TV?

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Total Guess: Was it Earth 2's Kal-L?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Kal-L was in that issue, but he was far too busy to be wtching TV.

Hint: this is an obscure character.

Posted by Xben on :

Alfred Pennyworth?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Not Alfred, but you are on the right track in that the character is not the main character in the book.

Posted by Blacula on :

Steve Dayton?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Lana Lang?

Posted by Xben on :

I think Lana would have been Clark's co-anchor at the time, so I'd be surprised if it was her.

How about Jim Gordon?

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Guys, remember Quislet's hint said "obscure".

So, I dunno, Woozy Winks?

Posted by Xben on :

True, I'd missed that.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Not Steve Dayton or Commissioner Gordon. Lana was doing a field report in that issue.

And although Woozy Winks is somewhat obscure, he isn't the character.

Another hint: This character is not connected to any superhero or superheroine.

Angel (sans Ape)?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Nope, not Angel. And as a free gimme, not Ape either.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I seem to recall someone commenting on Clark's "coldness", and that someone being in the studio alongside Clark. Perhaps it was a different issue.

Sugar and Spike?

Getting closer. It is not Sugar and Spike. They were the main characters of their series, so they don't fit one of the hints given.

There is the comment of Clark being unemotional ever since Supergirl died.

And the hints soi far: An obscure character that was not the main character of the series and not connected to a superhero or superheroine.

Darwin Jones?

Posted by Xben on :

Daphne Dean? (Just a wild guess)

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Not Darwin Jones nor Daphne Dean (remember no connection to a superhero)

This is a male character.

Posted by Blacula on :

I feel like I should know this. I'm going to kick myself when I find out who it is.

Sarge Steel?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Not Sarge Steel.

Don't feel too bad. It is just a one panel cameo in a series that featured hundreds of characters.

Tawky Tawny ??? (wait no connection to a super hero ... )

I just like saying Tawky Tawny!

I know. But it's a series I've read at least a dozen times and love dearly! [Smile] I even had that awesome Perez/Ross poster on my wall for a good number of years! I wonder if your character made it onto it?

[shrug]

I just like saying Tawky Tawny!

Funnily enough, I kept thinking of Mr Tawky-Tawny too, even though he doesn't fit the criteria.

Hmmm, I'm trying to remember the scene...

Hold on, is it John Constantine? He would have been an obscure character back then. And Swamp Thing isn't really a super-hero.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Scribbly? Though I suppose the "no super-hero connection" probably rules him out.

Er... as does the not being the star of his own strip.

Uh... never mind.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Those two things do rule out Scribbley, but you are getting close with that guess.

Not Tawky Tawny nor John Constantine.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

No idea who Scribbley is/was, so that doesn't help me.

What about, um....Cryll, Space Ranger's old honky alien sidekick?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

There were two panels I remember someone watching Clark, though my memory could be wrong.

To help the others guess:

1) It was a young-looking Caucasian human boy with wild afro-like hair, sticks straight out like a hedgehog. I dunno if he was young, or just short and looks young. He was seated in a large soft chair facing the television.

2) There were two co-workers of Clark's at (I think) WGBS watching him inside the studio. The two commented that Clark was cold and had been that way since Supergirl died.

I think Quis may be referring to my #1.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Scribbly Jibbet, Boy Cartoonist was a strip the Great Sheldon Mayer did for DC Comics. It is from this strip that we get Ma (Red Tornado) Hunkel.

IB, you are correct that it is panel 1 that I am talking about. There is a clue to the person's identity in that panel.

"Hmmmm" indeed

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

The Scribbly guess was based on the fact that, like Sugar and Spike, it was a long-running humor title started in the Golden Age.

But I'm at a loss to come up with other DC humor titles with youngsters from memory.

You guys are getting colder now.

Not Binky or Jack Kirby.

From the previous page, Invisible Brainiac pointed out the correct panel.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

that doesn't do much good for those of us who do not have the issue anymore.

Kamandi?

Posted by Shining Son on :

IB gave a pretty good description of the character too, it's just that I don't recall a white boy with that hair in comics of that time. But then I didn't read the non-superhero titles often.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Tis not Kamandi (again, this character was not the star of the series)

And my issues of Crisis are buried in boxes. I was able to view the panel on line. The panel does not name the character, but as I said, it does give a clue to his identity.

And Shining Son, this cameo appearance was his only new appearance in comics in the 1980s

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Well, I stumbled across the answer while trying to find the panel.

I'm regretting ruling out Genius Jones, because that would've been another close one.

I wonder if the "Hmmmm" and the frames photos are also clues?

Posted by Lard Lad on :

That's Sugar & Spike in the photos, isn't it? If I knew anything about S&S, I'd say it's a supporting character of theirs.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

...and now I've stumbled onto the answer as well.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

At this point, stumbled upon answers are good. The obscurity if the character makes it unlikely that anyone will know the answer withouot a little internet research.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Okay, Quis. Here's the answer, courtesy of the Sugar and Spike article on Wikipedia under "Featured Characters":

quote:
Bernie the Brain, a child genius who, despite being the same age as Sugar and Spike, is an accomplished scientist and inventor who speaks and understands "grown-up talk". When he first encounters Sugar and Spike, he requires a translating device of his own invention to teach him their baby-talk (having already progressed past that stage, intellectually). He enjoys the chance to be a normal kid with Sugar and Spike, while the pair loves playing with Bernie's various inventions. The two often seek out Bernie when they encounter something they don't understand, particularly something involving grown-up behavior. Bernie made a cameo in Crisis on Infinite Earths #9 watching Clark Kent on the WGBS news report the Crisis and he appears to be very concerned about what is going on.

SPFTZL GJSRT (That's baby talk for "You're correct")

Hellboy, and John Byrne's Next Men?

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Es correcto, Xben!

Hellboy cameoed in JBNM #21 before his first mini Hellboy: Seed of Destruction saw print. Both were published under Dark Horse's "Legend" imprint, which also included Frank Miller's Sin City and Paul Chadwick's Concrete, among others. Hellboy had a few, short black & white appearances before the JBNM full-color appearance.

Yer up, Xben!

Posted by Xben on :

Fortunately for me, I have a friend who is a big JBNM fan, and I've read through all his trades.

OK, I just borrowed from the library the TPB for "The Contest" featuring the Avengers, reprinting the early 80's mini-series, "Contest of Champions." I've only read the first few pages, in which pretty much everyone across the Marvel universe gets abruptly kidnapped by some higher power. This leads to a big double-page picture featuring dozens of characters all jammed onto a space ship (or something) together.

Which Marvel hero is given the panel's only line of dialog, saying, "Hey, where the heck are we?"

Yeah, I do live in Perth, pretty close to the city. Far out! Wow, maybe we've bumped into each other at Comic Zone or something. Are you the guy who just offered to buy a bunch of my trades from me?

Posted by Blacula on :

No, but what are the trades and maybe I'll outbid him for them? [Wink]

Yeah - I used to go to Comic Zone once every two weeks or so. You could probably have usually found me poring through their $1 comics, trying to find something from the early 2000s that didn't look terrible. haha Since dropping all DC with the DCnU I haven't been in there in ages though.

How close is "pretty close to the city" by the way? Maybe we're neighbours? I'm in West Perth.

The question for a new page:

My guess: Reed Richards

Ice?

I think Blacula has identified the correct era.

But none of these are right.

quote:

Which Justice League International member was revealed to have had a crush on Hal Jordan? By crush, I mean it was explicitly stated so, and not merely implied. And just because someone kissed Hal doesn't mean that Leaguer had a crush on him!

Not:

Fire
Dr. Light
Crimson Fox
Ice
Green Arrow
Power Girl

Interestingly, Ice had quite the crush on Superman. Very heavily implied, can't remember if she ever stated it to someone.

Crimson Fox considered making Captain Atom, the Martian Manhunter and even Guy Gardner fall in love with her, but eventually fell for Metamorpho.

Dr. Light has admired both Batman and Hal Jordan, but possibly not romantically. The Rising Sun eventually dated her.

Power Girl had a thing for Aquaman, and kissed Hal during the Red Winter storyline, but that was the only time I remember her showing any attraction towards Hal. It might have been brought on by their despair at the time.

And in a fairly horrible twist, after the JLI dissolved and the JLA became a loose "club", Fire started dating Guy Gardner. She shoulda stuck with Nuklon...

I can remember a few jokes that Green Arrow had a mancrush on Hal, but they were just jokes (kinda like the jokes about Nightwing and Arsenal having some sort of sexual tension when they were in the Outsiders)!

Tasmanian Devil?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Taz it is, Blacula. His gayleague entry reveals all - Power Girl told Hal that Taz had a crush on him before, and that Wally and Ralph knew and teased him about it.

Hal and Taz were on the team together very briefly, about a dozen issues in the second JLI run - after the Red Winter storyline.

OK so since I can't think of anything original...

A few questions ago I asked for the normal/English-language names of the secret identities of various heroes used in the Spanish translations of DC comics.

This round I'm asking you to identify the normal/English-language names of these Spanish translations of various DC heroes, villains and teams.

Cara de Barro - Clayface, maybe?

20. Cara de Barro - Two-Face

25. Cascarón - Scarecrow (sticking with EDE's guess)

Who is Cascarón?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Let's try...

Cascaron = Two-Face?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

After my last guess, I googled the last three. So, I know who Cascaron is. But will let others guess

Posted by Blacula on :

Not Two-Face.

Posted by Shining Son on :

After the rest of you have done the dirty work, I'll swoop in.

A cascaron is an eggshell with confetti or a prize inside, so I'd have to guess Egghead.

Posted by Blacula on :

^ Haha It only takes one name to win the game. So long as it's the right name! [Smile] And you got it Shining Son! Next question to you.

Posted by Shining Son on :

What were the shards of the Rock of Eternity called?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Power stones?

Posted by Shining Son on :

No.

Just goes to show, every time you think you put up an easy one...

Think Latin.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Eternium?

Posted by Shining Son on :

See? That wasn't so hard.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I remembered it from its Postboot Legion appearances.

Which members of the Conglomerate also became Justice League members? I count six:

Three were members of the 1st Conglomerate.
Two were members of the last Conglomerate.
One was a member of both the above.

Early hint: two of those members were only shown as League members in a "future" version of the League.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Aw, no takers? Okay, I'll toss out Echo and Vapor, who were depicted as future Justice Leaguers in the JLA Annual that was a tie-in to Armageddon 2001.

That leaves four more.

Posted by Blacula on :

Gypsy and (I think) Booster Gold's JLA membership pre-dated their time in the Conglomerate. Do they count?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

They certainly do!

That covers the three members of the 1st Conglomerate and the one character who was a member of both. So we just need the two who were members of the 2nd Conglomerate only.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

another clue...

Both of these last two were also members of the JSA.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Still no takers?

We're looking for two heroes who've been members of the JLA, the JSA AND the Conglomerate.

One is male, another is female.

I'll throw another hint - the female was also a Titan, while the male was also with Infinity Inc.

Posted by Xben on :

How about Obsidian?

Posted by Blacula on :

How about Nuklon/Atom Smasher for the male and Jesse Quick/Liberty Belle II for the female?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Blacula is correct with both guesses! Over to you, Blacula.

Posted by Blacula on :

Whoops. Can't believe I forgot about this thread for so long. And I visit Spaceopoly every other day too. Apologies everyone.

Q - Most people know that Jade and Obsidian are the children of the super-hero Green Lantern (Alan Scott) and the super-villain Rose & Thorn (Rose Canton). But did you know that Rose Canton had another super-powered child? One who is more closely associated with an Earth-1 team/property than with any Earth-2 ones. Please name this half-sibling of Jade and Obsidian.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Hm... the new Thorn who showed up in Metropolis?

Posted by Blacula on :

I'm afraid that is incorrect IB.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I got curious and googled the answer and will now inhibit myself from answering [Razz]

Posted by Blacula on :

^ And you were probably one of only about three people that would have even attempted to answer it! [Frown] haha

Clue Time to get the others moving -

This character is/was a member of a team, though not one that ever had their own title.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I did try racking my brain for anyone who could be a possibility, but the character in question is fairly obscure [Razz]

Posted by Shining Son on :

But it should help that Thanksgiving is coming up. [Smile]

(Sorry, that clue would likely only help Americans.)

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Still a good clue, though [Razz] I think most people who've encountered this character in question would easily make the connection too given the similarities between the character and the mother [Wink]

Posted by Blacula on :

Ummm Should I leave you two in charge of asking all the clues for this question? [Wink] [Razz]

If Shining Son has looked up the answer too, then that's another of the regular players in this thread down! (Unless you just don't want to answer it for some reason, SS?)

I'll add some more clues to the ones above to jolt some more players into action.

QUESTION - Most people know that Jade and Obsidian are the children of the super-hero Green Lantern (Alan Scott) and the super-villain Rose & Thorn (Rose Canton). But did you know that Rose Canton had another super-powered child? Please name this half-sibling of Jade and Obsidian.

CLUES:

* They are more closely associated with an Earth-1 team/property than with any Earth-2 ones.
* This character is/was a member of a team, though not one that ever had their own title.
* The character in question is fairly obscure.
* This character has some sort of connection to Thanksgiving.
* This character and their mother share a similarity.
* While not a villain, this character was cast as an antagonist in most of their appearances.
* This character was created pre-Crisis but died just a few years after it.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Yes, I looked it up, and just as well, because I never heard of this character.

Also, for years I was thinking that Phantom Lady was Jade and Obsidian's mom. Must have been just a fan theory, but haven't run across any mention of it at all, even as theory.

* I only realised that the name of the team that this character is a member of is a rather hilarious pun about 10 years after first hearing of them!
* This character has brown hair.
* The comic series this character died in had, at that point, probably killed off more DC characters than any other except Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Is it Mayflower of the Force of July?

Posted by Blacula on :

^ Yes it is!

Here's her team's wikipedia entry for those who don't know much about them/her.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Force_of_july

Even though my only exposure to this group was their final appearance in Suicide Squad, I'm really sorry this team didn't last longer.

I think their names, costumes, powers and raison d'etre were all quite interesting and memorable and could have been milked for a lot more stories than they were. Oh well.

Over to you, Q.

OK this might be easy.

What was Earth-B?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

That was the world where any story that didn't fit elsewhere happened.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

I knew it would be easy.

Bob Rozakis named it Earh-B in honor of Bob Haney, who in the Brave & the Bold would write out-of-continuity stories.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Right. I think he coined it in his "Ask the Answer Man" column. Marvel-DC x-overs were also said to be there, as I recall. Some fans thought the Super Friends comic was set there, but E Nelson Bridwell always argued they were Earth-1.

okay, then...

There is a character who appeared multiple times in the 1970s/80s DC Comics Presents series, yet was supposed to have one more appearance that never saw print.

The missing story was referred in another series, along with a footnote telling readers to watch for an upcoming DCCP story, but it wound up never seeing print.

Name the character (and bonus points for naming the circumstances of the cross-over reference).

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Would that be the Flash?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

not the Flash.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Green Lantern?

Posted by Xben on :

What about Jonathan Ross (Pete Ross's son)?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

neither GL not Jon Ross.

Unlike Jon Ross, he was a 'headline' character, with his own logo alongside Supes under the DCCP banner.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Batman?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Was Jon Ross a hero? Never heard of him.

But good point in the the question doesn't specify someone who got cover billing.

But assuming it is, I can only go with random guesses, and I'll start with Captain Comet.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Jon Ross was Pete Ross' (Supes childhood friend) son. He popped up a few times in DCCP: first the Legion prevented Superman to stop his kidnapping by aliens because JR was destined to lead both worlds in an important alliance (DCCP 13, Supes and the Legion). So Pete went nuts and became a super-villain, targeting Superman by yanking Superboy out of the time stream and putting his own mind in Superboy's body (DCCP 14, Supes and Superboy). At some point, they resolved that story line with Supes rescuing JR, figuring Jon could return to the other world at some point in the future.

Jon Ross instead grew up to be a British talk show host. (just kidding. different Jon(athan) Ross)

Capt Comet is a good guess, having appeared twice (the proper number. hint, hint), but not him.

Not Batman. Not multiple DCCP appearances (only one, with the Outsiders. Bats and Supes teamed up every month in World's Finest at this point).

Adam Strange?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Not Adam Strange!

But of all the guesses so far, only Batman and Adam Strange had any meaningful interactions with the character in question. I believe that is still the case in recent years, but I am not 100% certain.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Atom?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Having looked at a list of co-stars and taking your hints into consideration, I will guess Swamp Thing

Posted by DrakeB3004 on :

Deadman?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Joker?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Swamp Thing it is!

His first DCCP appearance (#8) was before his 80s series started, whereas his second published one (85) was late in the landmark Alan Moore run.

But several issues before Moore started, one issue began with ST and his supporting cast at Linda Holland's grave. Having dug it up, they found the grave was empty. It was a mystery then-writer Martin Pasko presumably intended to get to, but it was never mentioned again.

The opening sequence in that issue of ST (13, maybe. or 15) referred to having just come off of another adventure, with the asterisk to keep an eye out for a soon upcoming DCCP story. But it never ran. I am guessing (1) Pasko never had time to get there, (2) Moore had no interest, (3) it may well have conflicted with his ideas for revisioning ST away from the Wein mold, and/or (4) it got delayed to the point where the Moore revisioning made it pointless to run.

as for my hints: Bats encountered ST several times, in ST's 70s series, Brave and Bold, an 80s ST annual, and possible other times. Adam Strange appeared several times inthe late Moore run, in a 2-parter on Rann (where ST saves Rann from drought) and later on, Earth-side, where he fulfills ST's request to let Abby know he's alive but stuck in space (she in tuen thinks he is a madman). My next hint would have been that a back-up feature character in this character's series also had multiple DCCP appearances (Phantom Stranger).

Back to Quis!

I just love that first Superman/Swamp Thing story in DCCP #8 SO EFFING MUCH!

DCCP & B&B were just pure 70s/80s comic awesomeness actually. You never hear anyone talking about them much but there were just so many gems in those runs. Loved 'em.

In 1968 Ma & Pa Kent were de-aged. What was the in-story reason for why they de-aged?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Aliens were making a movie of Superman's (or Superboy's) life and decided they looked too old.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

That is correct. They were from another dimension and using Superboy's deeds as a television show. The viewers thought the Kents were too old, so the producer put some deluted youth serum into their water.

I just realized, this might be the first idea of a reality tv show.

Posted by Shining Son on :

One of many answers where I never read the story itself but read about it. Probably in a letter column or editor's note.

Who was conspicuous by his absence on the cover of World's Finest #200?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Batman? Seems like the era where they were dabbling with Supes teaming up with others, before the existence of DCCP.

Posted by Chaim Mattis Keller on :

Batman.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Yes, he had co-star billing up till 197, Flash was the billed cos-star for 198 and 199 but Batman was still somewhere on the cover. On 200 Robin was the co-star, and Bats had his first absence.

Posted by Shining Son on :

Looks like you both got it right, but Kent was 7 minutes earlier. Go Mr Shakespeare.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

What character appeared both in Dave Sim's Cerebus and James Robinson's Starman?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Groucho Marx?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

good guess! but no. I do not recall Groucho in Starman, and the Cerebus version, although looking and behaving like Groucho, was actually Lord Julius, technically not Groucho himself.

you are on the right track, though.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

No takers?

Hint: this character has links to a character that appeared in one version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Oscar Wilde?

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Charles Dickens?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Lardster has it!

Oscar Wilde (actually two versions of him) appeared in two Cerebus storylines: Jaka's Story and Melmoth, as well as in Shade flashback in Starman.

Dorian Gray from the movie being the LXG tie-in (who, now that I think on it, was also referenced a few times in Starman).
