Since it's mostly other people starting them these days, I just wanted to point out that I always found it a good idea to PM new people to alert them to the welcome thread. Often, it takes awhile for people to fully explore the message board, and, especially given the level of activity on the MMB, welcome threads may fall back several pages before a poster gets around to visiting this forum.

An important point, especially if we have another blitz of pseudo-cyber-"war" ... thanks, EDE.
Since EDE brought this up, I'll add a note of thanks to those who are, indeed, gregarious enough (and attentive enough!) to start these welcome threads. It's become a hallmark of this place, and I know it's appreciated, even if they don't get an immediate response from the newbies ... including some that I've invited over here.
I try to keep up with posting on birthday threads, or thousand-post milestones, and that's about all I can manage!

Thanks EDE, that's a great idea and seems fairly obvious & very logical now that you've pointed it out.
And Grey, I make a point of trying to make sure they get started because I remember how much it meant to be welcomed in that manner when I first came across LW.
It's like walking in to an unfamiliar establishment or attending a reception with many people you don't know but immediately being welcomed at the door with a friendly smile at made to feel at home. Nothing like it in the world.

It does seem so obvious that I actually hesistated in pointing it out, but then I remembered how long it took me to hit upon the idea.
And I do think the welcome threads are a really important part of the building of community on the boards.
