I think PMS did a good job of writing the Legion as a group of very diverse characters, and giving each one their time in the spotlight.

I certainly enjoyed the Chuck/Tenzil/Rond/Lori vs. alien invaders issue as well as the tryout issue, though I found it very difficult to suspend enough belief to accept that Cannus and Splitter made it to the finals. I was all for the silliness of the tryouts, but I want my Legion finalists to be of serious claibre!

Well, Cannus apparently got bonus points because he'd been in the Legion Academy.
But the fact that Splitter made it, when Dragonmage, Polar Boy, Night Girl, Radion, et al. were dismissed was incredibly lame.

I could accept everything about that era until Thunder joined the team. Everything to do with her was wasted on me.
I liked how the Mordru battle was handled as a real campaign. I even liked how intricate the dark circle rising story was--though I could have done without the Brainiac four twist.
Finally, I liked how Lori Morning wasn't in some of the issues.

In the first place, I don't believe that the arrival of Abnett, Lanning and Coipel was directly responsible for the cancellation of the two titles. The cancellation may have been part of the plan to give the Legion a fresh start, which involved launching them anew with the LOST mini-series. I don't think it's fair to suggest that DnA and Coipel were responsible for the cancellations due to the quality of their work. The book was already floundering in sales by that point.
Secondly, I preferred the artwork of Moder, Moy, Armstrong, et. al., to Coipel's early work, too. But I think the stories DnA were telling needed a different look than what had gone before. Moy could probably have drawn the Blight (though he would have had the blighted girl Legionnaires' tongues sticking out at every turn!), but it wouldn't have been as dark and disturbing, as Coipel's art was.

One interesting facet of this era is that they explored the centrality of R. J. Brande to the Legion mythos in a way that had rarely been done before.

But without involving either the pre-Zero Hour connection to Chameleon Boy or the Durlan- switching-places-with-Phase conundrum...
