Dean, you are right about Tellus being designed with the ability to make his way both on the land and in the sea. I imagined his world to be predominantly water, broken up by marginal stretches of land.
Thanks for your comments on the colors of the sensor nodules. I must admit to having leaned rather close to cliche in matching some of the colors and their corresponding meanings. I hoped that by keeping it simple, a larger number of readers might catch on to the patterns. I don't think that our interpretations of the "moods" of different colors is universal. In China, a virtuous bride might wear red on her wedding day. She certainly wouldn't wear white, as that color represents mourning in the Chinese culture.

Characterwise, I believe it was my namesake that indeed called Tellus a lump.

You might be right about that, Dev ... but there was a colorist who told me that he thought Tellus looked like "a big lump of sh*t." Speaking of colorists, I think that Ronda Pattison did a wonderful job on issue #34. She even tried to capture the changing colors of those sensor nodules ... something that hasn't been properly done since Legion of Super-Heroes #14.
No two artists will agree on everything, and there probably are a few things I'd have done differently, but Ronda's work on the issue is truly impressive. She approached the coloring as a true artist. What more could I possibly ask? Check her work out. I'm sure you'll be as impressed as I am.

Steve, you flatterer you! Well I can honestly say that your issue was one of the most fun I've done so far, and certainly the most challenging. I hope everyone likes it. I'm sure when I see it in print ( I have to buy it on the 30th like everyone else) I'll see things that I should have done differently, and maybe someday we can compare notes. How else is a girl to learn?
Trying to make Tellus' nodes change, but still be purple at the edges, was more difficult than I imagined, and not quite as successful as I'd hoped, but I'm glad we stayed true to your original vision. Editorial actually wanted me to make them all purple, but once I said it was your idea they let it go!
Thanks for your kind words Steve; it was terrific working with you!

TPTB have been trying to shut Tellus up since day one. Tellus' pacifist ways threatened to disrupt profits controlled by the superhero segment of the comic medium and TPTB muted him and fitted him with cement overflippers. However, idiots that they are, they forgot Tellus can actually breath underwater.
Nice to know that Tellus will finally get to have his say.
