A couple of noteworthy trivia moments:

~ 24 foreign acts were in the Top 40 for the fourth week in a row, including 17 British acts.

~ Irving Berlin (#33) became the oldest composer to make the Top 40, at age 95. (See, something good did come from Taco.)

Also, it strikes me that a number of artists in this countdown were also represented one year later: Steve Perry (as a member of Journey, here), Elton John, Mike Reno (as a member of Loverboy), Rod Stewart, Prince, Duran Duran, Sergio Mendes and Eddy Grant.

My top ten:

40. HUMAN TOUCH, Rick Springfield
9. STAND BACK, Stevie Nicks
28. DON'T LET IT END, Styx
26. ROCK 'N' ROLL IS KING, ELO
24. SAVED BY ZERO, The Fixx

27. CHINA GIRL, David Bowie
11. SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS, Eurythmics
18. (KEEP FEELING) FASCINATION, Human League
33. PUTTIN' ON THE RITZ, Taco

Human Touch was my favorite out of Rick Springfield's songs. His Greatest Hits CD is one that rotates every few weeks into my CD player at work. And Stevie Nicks. What can I say? She's still hot even today.

I was deeply into hard rock at this time. Few of my favorite songs made the list at all or charted very high. On this list, "Salt In My Tears" and "Rock Of Ages" were the only "true" rockers, as I narrowly defined the term back then (meaning, mostly, power chords).

But it was hard to deny the infectious groove of "Is There Something I Should Know" and "Fascination." (The Human League did the impossible by making robotic-sounding music you not only could dance to, but couldn't resist dancing to.)

At the time, "Sweet Dreams," "Every Breath You Take" and the wonderfully witty "Lawyers In Love" would never have made my top ten list. (They were vastly overplayed, for one thing.) But that's the benefit of hindsight. They're great songs that have withstood the test of time.

"Living in Oz" inspired me to travel to Australia. Would like to thank Mr S for that bit of inspiration....

I wish I had that on CD now..... "me and Johnny" would be particularly poignant now....

I remember when he released his greatest hits here in UK a critic savaging it by saying that as "Jessie's Girl" was the only song that ever reached the British top 30 it should have been called his Greatest HIT.... ooh the bitch had no taste!!

I'm feeling all nostalgic now... mmmmmmmm

I remember a few random lyrics that may jog your memory (or may not).

SALT IN MY TEARS was a guitar-driven rocker:

I saw you laugh when the knife was twisted
It still hurts but the pain has shifted
[something, something]
But I won't cry for the wasted years
'Cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears

I still hear it on classic rock stations occasionally.

FAMILY MAN: typical H&O

Leave me alone,
I'm a family man
And my bark is much worse than my bite

I said, leave me alone
I'm a family man
And if you take it too far, I just might

I didn't really like the song (or H&O, generally), but it was too catchy to not trot through my mind.

STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE was the old Supremes number redone by the Hollies.
