holy crap did it suck. It looked like some shitty attempt at an artsy fartsy movie. The only interesting moment was when you see him speeding off into the stratosphere. The rest... WTF moment.

I actually thought the trailer was very good. I thought it got to the heart of the mythology that it's creators intended. I also think it's going to appeal to many people in my generation who know Clark Kent very well thanks to Smallville.

Superman Returns was all about the mythology and crafting an emotionally resonant story and all that stuff. I think I'd rather see a Superman movie that is less 'Batman Returns' and more 'Avengers.'
More special effects and stuff blowing up and super-hero fight scenes. Less 'hero's journey' and deep instrospection and whatever.
I've seen all the coming-of-age / personal transformation stories I want to see (and, IMO, they work better when the protagonist's moment of growth doesn't coincide with his decision to wear a costume or adopt a completely different identity, since that's kind of the opposite of 'growth'...).
I wanna see some superhero action!
I blame Nolan for these ponderous pretentious tedious boring-as-hell Batman movies that have been so successful. Yawn.
At the end of movies, the kids and us play 'What was your favorite scene' in the car on the way home. After the Avengers, we all had multiple favorite scenes. After this last Batman, we all had to wrack our brains for anything quippy or fun or memorable, it was all so low-energy and dark and overwrought.
I'm not encouraged by the idea that the new Superman relaunch is going to be following that trend, and be all serious and 'deep.'

I thought the trailer was fine, but I'm jaded by the prospect of a new Superman movie, just as I'm jaded by the arrival of the new Spider-Man movie. While I'm glad younger people can thrill to the updated exploits of these heroes, I feel I've been there and done that.
With that in mind, I disagree with Set's assessment of the Dark Knight films. I think this franchise reboot works because it's more of an adult exploration of super-hero themes than a thrill ride aimed at kids. (Which isn't to say kids can't enjoy it. I saw the movie at 3 p.m. yesterday in a theater about 2/3 full, and a good number of viewers were young people. At the end, the audience applauded.)
The last Superman film was muddled because the filmmakers didn't seem to know what to do with the character: Is he Jesus Christ? Is he a super-hero? Is he an absentee father? They were trying to make the film relevant to too many audiences and it didn't work.
The Batman films, on the other hand, are targeting a much older audience. The passage of time is openly acknowledged (eight years pass between Returns and Rises; at least seven years passed during the course of Batman Begins. This must put Bruce Wayne somewhere in his mid to late 30s.) Christian Bale is obviously older than the actors chosen to portray Spidey and Supes, and most of the supporting actors were older as well.
Still, the movie delivers a lot of bang for the buck as well as exploration of deeper themes -- a potent combination that makes it successful as a film.

Saw it again last night in front of TDKR and I said to Carol "You will believe a man can... fish!"
She said it had nothing to do with the character as she knew it. Hope this gets better faster, but it seems like it's kinda trying to follow the Batman Begins formula.
Hopefully they will be smart enough to have a powerful foe and not just Bald Luthor again. Even Batman gets that.

I am optimistic about the new Superman, but am not holding my breath.
The trailer wasn't that bad, but it wasn't great either. The first stuff we saw coming out of The Amazing Spider-Man didn't look near as good as what the movie delivered...at least to me.
That being said, it's hard to judge that trailer, as it is still way early in the promotion of the film, and the trailers should build to make you more excited as the movie gets closer to release.

I get, and can appreciate, what they were going for in that trailer, but it didn't exactly excite me and make me want to rush out and see the movie. It didn't do that at all actually.
However, let's all not forget that this is a Zack EXCESS EXCESS EXCESS Snyder movie; so those were probably the only non-visually/aurally assaulting 90 seconds in the whole thing.
