I thought this important Legionverse race deserved their own thread, given that we've apparently never discussed them before!

Things Thanar is known for:

1) It is one of the Gandian worlds meant to serve as a buffer between Earth and the Dominion (per v4 Annual #2)!

2) They apparently invented a super-muscle flexing exercise mastered by Karate Kid (per SLSH #231)!

3) They once used their Super Moby Dick of Space attracting abilities to lure the Super Moby Dick of Space to their planet (per Adventure #332)!

4) They are not really people made of minerals; they are jst really, really into mineral water?

I knew Eryk Davis Ester was behind this thread.

6) They are no match for the Starburst Bandits and their flaming steeds and/or mares!

Bah. I must be losing my touch. There was a time that posting this thread would have guaranteed someone scanning and posting pics of the mineral people of Thanar. Guess I'll have to dig out my own archives to remind myself what they look like.

Thank space!! I was *just* about to scan and post, now I can instead eat ice cream.

My scanner was broken. What was your excuse?

In any event, they don't look very mineraly.

Jeepers! No wonder I forgot what they looked like.

I wonder if the mineral people of Thanar can do anything more interesting than simply having mineral-flesh. Like maybe they can change their flesh to different minerals?

They probably export nutritional supplements.

But their architects appear to have mastered two-dimensional building design.

Maybe Super-Moby only wants to drop by for a visit. Why are they so sure he wants to devour them? Are they calling him FAT?

Is that a white dwarf in the sky?

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

It might be a white dwarf, or it might be the Gigantic Blue-Cored Puffball Monster, a known predator of Super Moby Dicks.

And Lash has a point. Maybe Super Moby Dick just wants to nibble on one of Thanar's mountains and the Mineral People are getting hysterical for nothing.

Jeepers! I hope for the sake of the mineral people of Thanar that's not the same white dwarf Mon-El will later bring to Legion HQ!

Here's the famous Lar Gand revealing the Secret Origin of the Mineral People of Thanar!

^ Look at all those potential threads!

I wonder if the Mineral-fleshed people have some connection with the Bizarros - it's the lines on their faces that suggest some evolutionary branch.

Geez, it's not even a full fledged planet. It's Pluto, with people.

5) Got caught packaging dandruff as a mineral supplement.

For the record:

Bismoll-- homeworld of Matter-Eater Lad. Natives can consume matter in all forms.
Cargg-- homeworld of Triplicate Girl. Natives can split into three bodies.
Geequo-- homeworld of Apollo. Males have super-pheromone abilities.
Janus-- homeworld of Double-Header. Inhabitants have two-heads.
Lallor-- homeworld of the heroes of Lallor. Most natives have no super-powers.
Mlain-- planet's civilization destroyed by atomic war. Super-powers of native population unknown.
Myrnah-- homeworld of Braino, who is super-noble and stuff, but most of the planet is apparently powerless.
Somahtur-- homeworld of Infectious Lass. Natives have ability to control diseases.
Thanar-- homeworld of the mineral people of Thanar.
Tharr-- homeworld of Polar Boy. Natives can project super-cold.
Winath-- homeworld of the Ranzzes. Natives have super-producing twin offspring powers, plus the ability to generate lightning if power is activated by being attacked by lightning beasts on nearby asteroid Korbal.
Zwen-- homeworld of Stone Boy. Natives can turn into stone statues.

Could Braino have been the last descendent of super-noble people Lar Gand sent to Myrnah, if everyone else is now powerless?

According to the DC Comics Database, "Thanar is one of the Buffer Planets seeded by Mon-El, after the Dominator Invasion! of Earth. The planet was settled between Dominion space and Earth to prevent any future attacks."

So essentially, the Mineral People are canon fodder for any Dominion incursions into U.P. space?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Yeah, I think the whole idea was that if the Dominators ever wanted to invade Earth again, they'd have to go through a bunch of planets full of people who could turn into stone statues or consistently give birth to twins and stuff.

Er... maybe it wasn't the best defense plan ever. [Wink]
