Hi Guys
the excellent Mr.Wacker and I were hoping you could help us answer something....

If LSH had continued in Adventure Comics with no breaks from the end of the 'Tales of the Legion' numbering - what issue # would we be at now (October cover date)?

All help gratefully received! [Smile]

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Hmmm...if I understand the question correctly...then the answer would be ADVENTURE COMICS #817 for OCT 2005.

It was 36 years ago that the Legion stopped appearing in Adventure Comics regularly, ADVENTURE COMICS #380, MAY 1969.

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

IF we continue the numbering from the last non-digest issue the answer becomes ADVENTURE COMICS #774 for OCT 2005. #490 had a FEB 1982 cover date.

IF we continue the numbering with the digests then the answer becomes ADVENTURE COMICS #768 for OCT 2005. #503 had a SEP 1983 cover date.

ooops my idiocy - it was Superboy numbering that took LSH into the 'Baxter period' wasn't it....so if we continued numbering from the last original story in Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes (#325 June 85?) ...we'd be at #568 come October this year?
About 200 behind Adventure had that run continued?

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Oops! Sorry. The series in Adventure was called "Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes" too, so I misunderstood. And actually the last original story, #325 had a cover date of July 1985, but you're right that the number would still come out to be #568.

If you continue the series from the Baxter version it'd be #257.

If you continue the series from TMK/Reboot LSH it'd be #192.

Well, if that impresses you guys [Smile] , then just think that the series would be at #390 for OCT 2005, if it was continued from the original LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES four-issue reprint series from 1973. [Wink]

Here's another challenge for you, Gary:

Suppose ADVENTURE COMICS # 247, the first Legion story, had been LSH # 1. And suppose that every major Legion story (not counting minor cameo appearances and guest-appearances in other comics where the Legion was clearly not the "star") was part of that series. And suppose that this series was published continuously since the first issue (cover dated April 1958), allowing for times of suspension when the real series were not published (e.g., the five-month-or-so break between v.3 and v.4). Supposing all of that, on what issue would the series be now?

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Interesting question that would actually be a matter of taste. As the significance of many of the early appearances is subjective.

For me, here's how I'd break it down...

By the time the Legion stopped regularly appearing in ADVENTURE COMICS with #380, I'd estimate our make-believe LSH series at being at #102. And LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #116 would be the same as their final ACTION COMICS appearance in #392. Personally, I'd like to include the Legion's first series of 4 issues that were reprints, so I'd estimate our series being at issue #134 with SUPERBOY #200. (If you disagree then just subtract 4 from here on out.)

Now then for the first split...does one include the Tales issues or just switch the numbering to LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (vol. 3)? The last non-Tales LSH (v. 2) issue is #313 which would be our LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #247. Ignoring Tales would give us a #310 for LSH (v. 3) #63. Or pretending we go bi-weekly for awhile to include Tales then we come to #351 for LSH (v. 3) #63.

The second split comes with the LEGIONNAIRES series. Do you include it? Without it, LSH (v. 4) #125 gives you #435 (w/o Tales) and #476 (w/Tales). With it, LEGIONNAIRES #81 gives you #516 (w/o Tales) and #557 (w/Tales).

Compounding the problem is LEGION LOST (12 issues) and LEGION WORLDS (6 issues). Since it's easy to add these in later, let's forget them for now.

The LEGION lasted 38 issues, giving us #554 (w/Legionnaires, w/o Tales) and #595 (w/Legionnaires, w/Tales) and #473 (w/o Tales/Legionnaires) and #514 (w/Tales, w/o Legionnaires).

With LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (v. 5) #9 having the OCT 2005 coverdate, it would work out to be either #604 (w/Legionnaires, w/Tales) or #523 (w/Tales, w/o Legionnaires) or #563 (w/Legionnaires, w/o Tales) or #482 (w/o Tales/Legionnaires). Subtract 4 from any of the above to remove the first LSH reprint series. Add 12 to 18 to include LOST or WORLDS.

Now Gary, if John boards the East Bound train carrying a 'very fine' copy of Adventure Comics #247, going 65 miles per hour and Myrtle rides a West Bound train holding a 'near mint' copy of the same issue traveling at 57 miles per hour, at what time should Larry eat his tuna fish sandwich?

Well, after sleeping on it and deciding that since the book is supposed to be ongoing since ADVENTURE COMICS #247, I'm adding the LOST/WORLDS series to the mix. Also, since both Tales and Legionnaires added much to the mythos, we'll include them as our bi-weekly years. Therefore, the answer to HWW's question (for me) is:

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #622 (OCT 2005)

Hell, I counted 621. Guess I have to go back to the begining and start over. [Wink]

A question for Barry and Mr Wacker,

Is there some sort of renumbering conspiracy in the works?

Hmm... don't forget that v2 was originally Superboy's book...

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

My speculation theory about this is that at some point the Legionnaires are going to mention a Legion comic in a story and they wanted to refer to something in LSH #9 without saying LSH #9.

A question for Barry and Mr Wacker,

More likely they will refer to it in the comic since the Legionnaires are such comic fanatics!

I've been off board for a few days, so I didn't see the answer to my challenge until now.

622, it is!

Excellent work, Gary, in figuring out the answer as well as all possible permutations. I bow before your scholarship!

I'm all for including the four-issue reprint series for two reasons. One, that's the series with which I discovered the Legion, and two, X-MEN also reverted to reprints back then while keeping its original numbering intact.

Does this numbering calculations include:
Legionnaires 3?
Legion: The Science Police?
Secrets Of The LSH?
Legion of Substitute Heroes Special? (I just threw that in for fun)
any of the LSH Secret Files?
the supporting stories from the Superboy series before it became Superboy Featuring the LSH/Superboy & the LSH?

Posted by Barry Kitson on :

Well all we were looking for was the numbering had it continued from the last original Tales Of The Legion issue back in 1985...but all this other stuff is fun isn't it! [Big Grin]

Posted by numberonelegionfan on :

354--Tales Of The LSH (formerly LSH s2/formerly SLSH/formerly Superboy)
63--Baxter Series
81+"0"+"1000000"--SW6/Reboot Legionnaires
125+"0"+"1000000"--5YG/Reboot LSH
38--DnA Legion
12--Legion Lost
6--Legion Worlds

I could be off but I reckon the count would be around #683.

Now if you added the 10 issues and the one coming out this coming Wednesday, then the count would be #694.

And just for kicks, adding the suggested titles from above in my previous post not included...
Secrets Of The LSH--4
Legionnaires 3--4
Legion: The Science Police--4

brings my issue count to #706.

Posted by numberonelegionfan on :

oh...just remembered the reprint mini-series that everyone considers to be LSH series 1...another 4 =>#710

Since the Legion didn't become co-stars of SUPERBOY until # 197, that 354 number is misleading. 354-197=157 for the actual count of Legion issues in that series. And if we add the ten backup stories from # 172 to 195, that brings the total to 167.

By the way, I conducted an experiment of my own. While Gary's tally adds up every Legion series that has been produced, I decided to see what would happen if LSH had been published continuously in one monthly series since April 1958. According to my calculations, we'd be at issue # 571 for October 2005 (12 issues per year times 47 years plus seven months).

What I find interesting is where some Legion milestones would have fallen in that mega-series, if they had still been published at around the same time. For example, the second Legion story (ADV. # 267) would not appear until LSH # 20 (Dec. 1959). I leave it to others to speculate what the intervening 18 issues might have been like.

Some other highlights from the first two decades by issue number:

29 - Supergirl's first tryout (Aug. 1960)

38 - Supergirl joins, as does Brainiac 5 (May 61)

39 - Mon-El first appears (June 61)

52 - Ultra Boy first appears (July 62)

58 - Lightning Lad dies (Jan. 63)

66 - Lightning Lad revived (Sep. 63)

71 - Dream Girl first appears (Feb. 64)

94 - Triplicate Girl killed by Computo (Jan. 66)

99 - Karate Kid, Princess Projectra and Ferro Lad join (July 66)
[This ties in neatly with the 100th issue, which would have contained the second part of that story.]

107 - Ferro Lad dies (Feb. 67)

123 - Mordru first appears (June 68)

Also noteworthy: Issue numbers in the '70s correspond very closely to the issue numbers of the Legion's run in SUPERBOY -- and they get closer as time goes on:

183 - ERG-1 (Wildfire) first appears (Jun. 73 - SUP 195)

191 - Wedding of Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel (Feb. 74 - SUP 200)

197 - Invisible Kid dies (Aug. 74 - SUP 203)

229 - Dawnstar first appears (Apr. 77 - SUP 226)

231 - Chemical King dies (June 77 - SUP 228)

Here's something I'm kinda curious about...what if all the LSH stories were published in a continuous run except whenever there was a timeline change, at which point a new series was begun from #1? So, restarting from the Crisis, from the Mordruverse, from the Glorithverse, from Zero Hour, and from the WaK kickoff? (I'm ignoring the minor timeline reboot in the Universe Ablaze crossover.) How many issues would each timeline's Legion have run?
