Hey, I haven't seen this one on LegionPics yet.

Great work. There's something about his pose that makes it look like he's using his powers.

Posted by DrakeB3003 on :

Probly cuz his hands are out and he's surrounded by purple light which has always been used as a sign of his powers. I wanted to hint at it without being too forced.

You succeeded. [Smile]

Excellant depiction of Thom, Drake. He appears a bit older and gives me the feeling he's preparing for his role of Star Man.

Wow! That Thom picture is incredible!

Are YOU kidding ME!!! You did these! Pencils and colors???

Most heartedly I agree with Kid Prime, these do reflect the personalities as I interpret them. Ferro! You've gotten Ferro, Fero Lad, and the Ghost of Ferro Lad. He's not a wimp, he has an emotion bigger than himself, and he's not a steroid monster.

Mon-EL, there's is someone that is going to save the galaxy.

Shikari, searching, seeing.

Star Boy, well you've actually added to the personality.

The others on you web are as good. A new look for Jenni, I like. Ayla looks loke the Photomanip on the other thread, perfect. Umbra's attitude!!! Jo and Tinya, no wonder Jo is such a favorite. Okay I'm gushing. I would love to see a whole comic issue of these images. WoW!

And thanks for the nice words [Smile] (and the forum to present them).

Drake, this stuff is amazing. With all the garbage being published in comics today, why the hell aren't you penciling something?!?!
Beautiful stuff. Keep it up.

Posted by Greybird on :

Yeah, I'll second that emotion! Advertising storyboards are an underrated need and specialty, but are not enough for your talents, methinks. Why aren't YOU drawing Drake for DC? -- I asketh myself.

Stunning, that's all I can really say. Even the choices of that ueber-blasting in-control Wildfire, a lovely and well-formed Dawny, and Ultra Boy evoke my own modern intro to the Legion, when I picked up "LSH" v2 n284 in late '81. (Also Levitz's re-intro to writing the Legion.) So that group means a -lot- to me.

Would you happen to have a larger version even yet of your Dawnstar here? Or, hell's bells, of the whole picture? If you do and can e-mail either to me, I would be most beholden ...

Posted by DrakeB3003 on :

I hear you Grey -- Wildfire, Dawnstar and Ultra-Boy as the "advance team" flying ahead of a Legion cruiser was a stable for what was my "glory days" of the Legion.

I'll gladly send a larger version if you want Grey, but I warn you Dawnstar was meant to be out of focus.

Posted by DrakeB3003 on :

Oh yeah, and the reason I'm not drawing for DC is that if I were, there'd be a lot of angry posts here about how much more page-space Drake was getting than everyone else in every issue and he'd be on top of the "Five MUST Die!" poll [Wink]

There'd also be compaints about me missing deadlines, I'm sure -- a monthly grind is pretty hard to do and I like my pretty lucrative, but not too time-comsuming existence as a freelance hack in the tv ad biz [Smile]

Drake, just for a chill, is it allowed that you let us know something, an ad, you did and we might see? One of those things that when were hanging out with buds, we can say "yeh I know who did that!"

And hey, all Drake all the time isn't necessarily a bad thing, particularly when he looks like your version.

Honestly, I can't think of anything right now -- it's usually months later that something I worked on ends up on the air and I can't think back that far -- most of it's a blur. And even if I remembered, I don't know which ones air in which parts of the country. I did a bunch of comic book type art for the MTV Movie Awards though -- I remember that cuz I worked on it for an entire month.

Oh ok, I remembered I recently worked on a Smirnoff Vodka compaign and an AOL Bradband commercial. I also did some anti-drug p.s.a's that are airing now.

Wow.
Your art is amazing. And the colors are excellent!
You really do a better job than some of the artists that DC hired for the comics.
I wish they had hired you to do the DC trading cards.
I know the monthly grind is a royal pain, but I think you could do a great job doing just the covers even. And I'd love to see you do trading cards. Some of the pics you did would be great for comic covers or trading cards. Hell, if you didn't want to draw you could be a colorist. :-)
I especially love the Starboy one. Just the way he's posed and the sunspots and stuff.
I wish that I could still hold a pencil for more than 5 minutes much less draw like that.

Drake, one of the things I most enjoy about your renditions of the team is that you make each one an individual. I can distinguish Mon from Cos and Lyle from Val without needing the costume. In the current series, they all seem to have the same face with just the hair changed.

You really are much better than what we get in the book on a regular basis, IMO.

Vee

Posted by Omni Craig on :

Hey Drake, the team shot is nice! I really like the mini computers floating around Querl, and the fact that Tinya is phasing into the poster istelf! Well done.

And the Wildfire/Dawny shot captures so much of their inner torment. It makes me think of when Dawnstar left to search the galaxy for her soulmate, and Drake whispers "Damn" and explodes out of his containment suit, knowing he can't be the man she needs/deserves.

I applaud your artistic ability, all the while cursing my "two left hands". Bravo!

Belated praise is due for your latest items. I've rarely seen so adept a group portrait as you've done above, with its even being up-to-the-current-issue on Umbra's look.

As others have said, you've made individual expressions visible and distinctive, even in such a crowded setting, and that's something even Davis, Farmer, and Batista haven't quite managed to the same degree recently. ("Dream Crime" and "Superboy's Legion," the best recent Legion art.)

And the anguish in Dawny's face ... exquisite. I'm not sure of the setting or metaphor for those flames -- the gases swirling above Venus, perhaps?

Posted by deanlegion on :

Drake, that team shot is really, REALLY good! I love stuff like that there! Can I whine that Dreamer isn't there? [Urk!]

How/why was the picture of Wildfire and Dawnstar used on MTV? It's really good, too.

Would it be the first time a LMBP has gotten book time?

I'd be thrilled to see you get a poster page such as in LSH #100. I love those artists one-shots and yours are smack dab at the top.

Thanks -- the Dawnstar/ Drake pic was part of a whole slew of stuff I drew for the last MTV movie awards (which had a comic book theme). There was a series of promos for the awards that I drew to promote the event and the above panel passed across the screen (among others) in one of the promos.

That reminds me of the Train song "Drops of Jupiter":
... Now that she's back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation, hey, hey
She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there's room to grow, hey, hey

Now that she's back in the atmosphere
I'm afraid that she might think of me as plain ol' Jane
Told a story about a man who is too afraid to fly so he never did land

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the Milky Way
And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there .... etc.

But to answer your question, it was more like the flames of passion, at once illuminating and exciting yet destrcutive -- or I was riffing off "Gone with the Wind"...

Great, beautiful work, Drake! You really would make a most worthy Legion book artist - or better yet, a Wildfire mini-series: lots of Wildfire, fewer deadlines!

It's hard to pick a favourite among these, but I'd probably go for the M'onel picture. He truly looks noble and I love the way his costume shines! The Fatal Five sketch is wonderful, too - they all look so nasty, Validus roaring and the Empress seems so sexy and wicked, who could resist her?

The poster captures so much individuality of the legionnaires: Shikari's wings in motion; Brainy surrounded by his gadgets; Cos leading the team with Brin and Jo flying shotgun, Jo smiling like he's loving it; Tinya and Gates in mid-phase; Jenni leaping like she can't get there fast enough, Wildfire on fire and SMALL VIOLET! Great stuff, I'm sure it makes everyone smile.

Here was my submission in the "create your own Legionnaire" thread:
Minus Lad
 -

Senn Pokka was handed over to his homeworld's military when he was five years old in return for governmental benefits for his family (as is traditional on his planet). Also traditional were the genetic treatments military personel undergo troughout their adolescence. In Pokka's case it didn't seem to take -- while he's still stronger and faster than normal human standards, he was a runt by military standards.

And then his powers developed. Pokka emits a field from his eyes that drains energy from anything around him. If someone were to enter this field for long enough, they'd die. The special goggles help direct and focus this field -- he can fire it like a ray which seems like a harmless red light beam, until the target begins to weaken. It takes several seconds for the beam to incapacitate a normal person, longer for someone who has powers. He can widen the field to drain energy attacks. The energy makes him stronger, tougher and faster for short periods.

The "G-1" insignia is his military ranking - the highest class for a field soldier which he is proud of because he had been taunted for being smaller and weaker for so long.

I would be honored to be on that wall of Legion art -- I'm not sure how you'd be able to do it though since the original files are only a few inches tall (I created them for the web, not to be printed -- I don't even have any larger versions myself). Maybe there's a program that can let you do it (or maybe I'm thinking it's more complicated than it is?).

And thanks again to you guys for the nice words [Smile]

Drake:

I had a little success with enlarging your team sketch on pg 5 of this thread. I saved it in jpg format then inserted it into MS Word. In word, I grabbed the corner of the image and moved it until it was fitting nicely on 8.5"x11" paper.

Digitally, the piece looked great. No distortion at all. I printed it out and there was a litlle blurring around the outside lines of the Legionnaires. Don't get me wrong, it still looked good and the details were there... all in all it reproduced good enough for my wall. It could be that a top of the line printer is all that would be needed to print out the modified Word file.

I'm going to try it with some of your other works. I'll let you know how it turns out... My wife says the process works sometimes, but not others.

Posted by minesurfer on :

The same process worked quite well for your Ferro and Post-Boot Drake. They shall be on my wall soon at an 8.5" x 11" format.

Thanks Drake.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

I found that if you save them as a PostScript Image then reopen them at twice the normal DPI (which should be 72 meaning you open it as a 144) it makes for a real good image. But you have to have a paint program like Paint Shop Pro or PhotoShop to do it with. I'm not sure if any of the free programs out there support PostScript images.

Drake, I think that is a very good picture of Dawnstar. I like the Wildfire picture, too, but you can put me down as someone who likes the rich black shown in the book. Also, look again at how Steve drew the wings surrounding the star on Wildfire's chest. They have bit more flair, like the way Cockrum originally designed them. Still, a good drawing!

Posted by DrakeB3003 on :

Thanks Dean. The wings had more flare but some details got lost during the scanning/ coloring phase. I still can't wrap my brain around the rich black though -- the inversion from having the red be the dark parts of the costume to becoming the lighter parts seems unbalanced to me.
Click for fullsize image
The greater contrast of red/black from red/orange also serve to highlight his mid-section which is unfortunate since it seems to isolate it like a floating diamond shape, making it look like he's wearing some funky trunks. Making it more grey was my way of trying to counter this.

You always do phenomenal Wildfires! That Dawnstar is really physical, too - those muscles! And the star on her forehead is a power itself? The Wolf calls for a whole new origin for Timber Wolf.

Somehow, I missed your Subs picture. Beautiful! I love it! Great concept, too - they really get respect there... at last. This is the Ultimate Subs. They have a lot of power and a sinister edge. Even Chlor, who you kept in what I call his chubby "brussel sprout" costume, looks like he's brought forth the bramble patch of Hell.

Hey! Our lovely DarkHawk! Distant cousin in our Bear clan. Her wings grew with a variegated pattern, rare on Starhaven, even though it's closer to what the genetics would have suggested for us. But its compelling appearance always brought her suitors. Her face and hair may have something to do with that, o'course {g}

My brother Greatfire and I have both asked her out, but she keeps too busy to oblige us yet. I'm not sure where we'd go to dine, anyway. Women never eat on dates {rueful smile}

I wanna know who the people are in this post!

The top two in particular look interesting. There's some sort of story behind the asian-esque designs on the dudes epaulet, and the flying girls enshrouding shazam-cloak / poncho / thing and pony-tail are an awesome visual.

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Set, those are Emerald Dragon, Laurel Gand and Jewel, aka Jo Nah, Laurel Gand and Mysa Nal. These were their visuals during the infamous Legion on the Run storyline in very late V5.

There were lots and lots and lots and lots of problems with that story, but I still thought there was some fun going on. I call it a space romp.

Naturally, DrakeB's art makes them look even cooler than they were in the books.

I pursued it for a little while after I got out of school, but only managed a gig in a couple of issues of some small press publisher (it was an anthology book, so I wasn't even the main artist. One of the other artists on the book was Adam Dekraker though). I eventually gave up when I found I could actually make money in advertising.

I used to have a comic book portfolio, but it's all really old stuff.

Sorry -- things had been very busy lately with all the wedding hoopla. It's finally over, so maybe I'll have some new stuff soon. [Smile]

These are all spectacular (and most are new to me).

I especially like this one:

Woohoo! Drakefest! What a great way to start the week!

They're all superb but I particularly love Ferro Lad's mask and Sun Boy's flare, the Trips are beautiful, so is Phantom Girl.

Have to agree on Phantom Girl and Triplicate Girl. Mon-El has a strong anime look going. Of course Projectra would wear a blindfold.

Nice to see your work.
You always do such wonderful, imaginative things.

Thanks! I cannot believe it's been almost *three years* since I had any art to add to this thread. (I almost think something has to be wrong with the date stamp on my last art posting) Sometimes life just has a way of taking over ...

OH MY GAWD, new Drake art!!!

I don't know if you're on Facebook, but if you are, look up Legion World there. You have a buttload of fans over there. [Smile]

Heya Lash! I rebuilt page 12 of this thread to put back the Hate-Face stuff. I've had to rebuild most of this thread after the move to photobucket some time back - hopefully I'll get to the rest of it sometime...

THANKS DRAKE!! Your "Ballad..." is one of my favorite-ever works of art, can't wait to share with so many others [Smile]

Hello Drake. I fell in love with the Fatal Five drawing you did a few years ago and colored it recently (hope you don't mind).

I echo all the sentiments here that you're extremely talented. You should become independently wealthy, quit your job and devote all your time to drawing Legion images.

I certainly don't mind at all. Unfortunately, the link doesn't seem to be showing anything. It's not just me is it?

Crumb-bumbles... I DID have the image thumbnailed, but the link didn't last. I have always had trouble on LW placing images...operator error [Confused]

With the color, Sarya dominates that picture. Everyone else looks like her backup singers or something.

Not that this is a complaint... [Smile]

She is the one whose last name is Empress, or, if we're being informal, 'your majesty.'

Posted by DrakeB3004 on :

Nifty! Looks great! I especially like how you handled Empress's eyes.

Posted by Kid Quislet on :

Thanks. I had a lot of fun with it, and of course it's easy to build a rickety shack when you have a great foundation!

Empress was the most fun. I tried to give her a misty aura to match the planetoid surroundings (only for her in green of course). I also wanted The Eye to dominate her own eyes, and including the paleness of her complexion to suggest maybe the Eye is dominant over her rather than vice-versa. Mano I wanted to color a little ghoulish, looking a little dirty/decrepit like some agent of death. Tharok I tried to make more true to the old 4-color printing look of the old pulp comics, with a Terminator robot half. This Persuader version is my favorite as far as costume and colors go - a look of a modern Samurai introduced by Mr. Giffen. Validus is Validus, angry because of his yellow teeth.

The FF drawing and coloring are beautiful.
The green shimmer is especially wonderful.

That's a cute drawing of Jo and Tinya, too.

Love them all, Drake. Shades of Ditko in some of the designs!

Posted by Set on :

They seem more stylized and deliberately exagerrated in proportions than some of your previous work. It's awesome how you can change styles like that, and stretch your talent in other directions!

My favorite is the Nova picture. Very cool.

The backgrounds on the Machine Man and Sunfire pics are also neat, and the '3D' effect on your signature on the 3D Man pic is totally cool. I love that sort of detail!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Woooooooooooooooow. That is some awesome and very creative artwork, Drake! Love how each is so different yet keeping to a similar "theme" in the design.

Posted by Candlelight on :

These ARE so amazingly interesting to look at!
Fun!
I'm glad Set named them.
Once I knew, the Nova and Sunfire were obvious and wonderful.
The other two are great too, I just don't remember/recognize them.

I always love your work and long to see more.
[Yes]
