Great job, Yellow Kid (you too, Monkey-Eater)! I really like your designs up top and then your coloring jobs on the last two.

Hmm...you know, that 'wife-beater' costume could be Andrew's uniform for the Cockrum/Grell days!

That's what I was thinking, show a little leg and some chest and -bingo bango- it's a Cockrum/Grell costume. (well...for Grell it'd have to be a lot more skin)

Looking at what you guys are doing is making me think a lot more about composition and not just concentrating on the figure. I like it. Backgrounds rule.

- How about a belt-buckle and ring symbol for the LSV? -

Hey, how do you like ImageShack?

Posted by YellowBeast Kid on :

Thanks dean!

So far Image Shack seems ok, all those graphics thumbs still work (that surprised me) and they give you the code for different ways to post the pics. That's pretty cool.

I kind of like it, I'm tempted to upgrade to their pay service.

Is ther a pic somewhere that has his "official" costume as Impulse?

This one from the Timber Wolf series is the only one I know about.

I love that one, Freakinos. I just had to color it, hope you like it.

Hey, I've seen that Capt. Marvel jr. before (somewhere) and I love it. Great to have some more folks messing around with their graphics programs and IMO, more pencillors is always a great idea. It's impossible to have too much Legion art. Really, I mean that. [Big Grin]

Maybe from the Legion Fiction group or the GLA where ia also hang. Obviously having some troube with the codes here. Could not get the [ THUMB ] to work. Any known issues?

That sounds right. Nice.
I can't get the -thumb- tag to work either but if you can write the code for it instead of the shortcut then it'll work.

Lately I've gotten lazy let Image Shack supply the code and I just cut and paste it.

Posted by GoldenGreyEagle on :

The IMG and THUMB tags surround the URL of where you have the image stored. A blank line usually needs to precede the code for it to display properly. You also have to be calling up the graphic from a site that allows hot-linking. (See the stickied thread in Bits.)

The format is -- removing the spaces after "[" and before "]":

[ IMG ]your-URL-goes-here-without-spaces-before-and-after[ /IMG ]

or

[ THUMB ]your-URL-goes-here-without-spaces-before-and-after[ /THUMB ]

Do try using "Preview Post," if you aren't already, to be sure the graphic and text display as you want.

Posted by Nancy-boy on :

ahhh got the thumb tags to work... per the suggestion of line space and typing it all out, cool! Also the original post had a space in the file name. I think that may have munged it.

Thanks YK. My "technique" is really all just the result of a lot (and I do mean a lot) or trial and error. Don't be afraid to try new things, just make sure to "undo" the things you don't like and save frequently when you find something you do. If you screw something up (which I still do quite frequently) you can always go back to an earlier version and try again.

Posted by Yellow Hawk on :

Yeah, you talked about using a palette and I'm dying to get one and try it out. Since I started this thread I've picked up a lot of tricks and I'm learning how to blend those tricks together into new compositions. It's pretty fun.

I love that stuff! You're doing a great job on 'em knowjack. -heh- I think we all eventually have to learn the lesson of the difference between how it looks on our home computer monitors and what it looks like once it's posted as a webgraphic. I thought I was doing some really tight stuff until I saw a few things on a newer and really nice monitor. Ack! I found some serious color mistakes.
No big deal. It's all part of the learning curve.

So...a re-imagined Yellow Kid?

Mechana gave some advice on another thread and I thought I'd futz around with another pic and try to figure out what the heck she was talking about. That's a provocative design for Dawny, and quite attractive. Women don't usually wear breechcloths, but I can't imagine any reason other than tradition for why they couldn't. The belt would fit better above their hips than it does with men.

I have absolutly no idea what you mean when you say thoses words, but i love the picture. Sometimes the colouring I see can overpower the line work but this works really fine for me. Nice shading in the blue. Ta ever so ever for sharing.

Deddy

I love Mysas boots. They really ground her, which, given she was so often shown flying is a neat change.
Dawnstars costume works well for me although her expression is a little off, distant and sad.

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

Thank you Darden, I really like the fact that you're looking at all our work in these art threads and we always appreciate comments more than you guys know. A simple something from the audience means a lot to us.
Yeah, we've started sharing and debating techniques but you can just ignore all that and enjoy the pics...at least wer're hoping people are enjoying them.

Also I love doing those Jim Mooney Supergirl sketches, I have another one that's being worked on but it's unfinished. The real temptation with Mooney is to do it like he drew it (with Kara naked) if you'll look very closely you can see the body lines of the sketch and it's so tempting to do an adult version...but I didn't.

All that said, I thought I'd mess around with the Jim Lee Legion sketches a little bit. Here's the first of (maybe) a series of those.

A little doodle of the "new" Ultra Boy.
Glad Barry kept the same basic costume. Kinda hard to improve on this classic.

 -

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

Yeah, I think I like the Barry's Ultra Boy better than I like Jim's. I like the look when the chest emblem is larger and spreads across the front. Jim Lee's is pretty cool too though.

Polar Boy (the poster) showed us a Supergirl pic by one of the Moys that I hadn't seen before and it made me want to futz around with it and try something.
It refused to cooperate with me (darnit) so I'm going to set it aside and play with it again later but here's what I got out of it so far...

 -

Hey, I thought it was a cute idea.

Posted by knowjack on :

That's a really cute Supergirl!

Posted by Reboot on :

Well, it doesn't look like Laurel, but it's cute [Smile]

What's happening with leaving the white edges on the lines though? I thought you'd got past that with the Mooney sketch (hell, it's easier to just set up a multiply layer and paint over internal lines than it is to try and colour "up to the line" like you're doing)

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

Tolja..I'm fighting the wrong battle here. I have to set it aside and rethink my approach on this one.

Ok, so she doesn't exactly look like Laurel but I didn't want to go backward and do the Supergirl. So I came up with...

Imaginry Legion tryout's Mystery Girl!

YK,

I love the Moy Supergirl one. The colours are quite light and muted yet are you planning to give em a bit more "umph" ?

as drawn by Moy she reminds me more of Laurel than Kara though.

The Mooney Kara on the previous page is nicely done as well, apart from the eye's which look "off" to me. Were you trying something different there?

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

Oh yeah, that's what I'm calling a "working version" and I'll have it a little more intense before I finish it. Thanks for the feedback too.

The Jim Mooney-Supergirl-riding-an-asteroid was an experiment with technique, I wanted to keep the eyes sharp like they are in the sketch but maybe they're too sharp....hhhmmmm...I might see if I can fix that.

-here's the sketch for comparison-

thanks Art.

Seeing the Mooney sketch like that made me realise its his pencils that make the eyes funny. She looks like whatever she is sitting on is making her eyes shine wide open. [Smile]

In your version I noticed when i went back to compare, that the whites are too white, and the pupils have no colour. (at least on my works machine) that may be what makes me notice them.

sorry to sound like I'm carping, I'm not. I have no talent or skill at this sort of thing and am constantly amazed at what you, Deddy, Loser, Reboot and all the others can do with colouring programmes.

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

My pleasure, really. It also helps when someone has a critique of a piece where I can go back and take a look at what's not working for the audience. Feedback beyond the standard "That sucks, you boogerhead!" helps us (me anyway)
polish pieces like that. I think Mr. Mooney's sketchwork deserves the best I can do...and then some.
Since I posted those last two I've been working on something else (new thread) but I'll definitely get back to those two Supergirl sketches really soon and finish them off.

Cool, that'll be fun.

I find you can over-manipulate an image too...so I'm going to post this and quit messing with it. I picked a background that reminded me of somewhat of the Crisis you know where.

It's funny you mentioned over manipulating I postef a few versions of a pic of Jan in the december challenge thread that I have been playing with this afternoon I was sure if I should posthere cause I only couloured it and didn't draw it.

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

I haven't drawn any of these I've been posting. Sure, I'll change a line and maybe a costume but I really try to keep all the original line work I can. Granted, I sometimes do things like changing that Superboy/Triad pic into a Kent Shakespeare pic but all in all they're other people's stuff.

I look at it as an homage to the artists, both fans and pros. I hope like heck they see it that way too.

I haven't tried that one yet. I gave the one Dedman linked up a shot and posted it in Greybird's Winged gallery Here it was an interesting challenge, hope you guys like it.

btw- when I first joined up at LW there was a little artwork being done but the forum wasn't getting a lot of traffic at the time but NOW it's hard as heck to keep a thread on the top of the first page.

You guys...ok, US guys kick nass! There's a lot of writing and graphics being done here lately and most of it is really good stuff. It's extremely cool seeing works by the newer members who have jumped in to contribute, thanks Knowjack, Polar Boy, White Raven and others for their artistic contributions. Then there are the writers who have sweated over their text (like Kent, Lantern Lad and Vivian) and brought us visions of alternate Legions and filled gaps in continuity and expanded characterization purely for the love of doing it.

I also want to say "great work" to long time contributors like Sketch, Loser, Dedman, Numf-el, Lash, Harbinger, Semi, Reboot, Cobalt, Monkey Eater and all the others who have made this place such a joy to Legion fans.

It's fantastic! This place is just loaded with talent, great work Legionnaires!

Two things -
1. Jim Lee's designs for some Legionnaires look GREAT but the images I cropped out aren't very hi-res so they're a little rough but they still look pretty cool so I colored 'em anyway.

2. My monitor's color is off so I'm not really sure how these are going to look on your computers. You guys might need to copy the pics and darken them just a little with your own graphics programs to see what the colors atually should look like.

If anybody could link us up to some hi-res versions that would be fantastic.

I colored the Ultra Boy pic a while back even though there's nothing unusual about the costume design. I just liked the sketch. It's probably somewhere in the 8 pages of this thread so to simplify things I'll post it here again.

Thanks in bunches. That'll make coloring them MUCH more fun.

Here are my attempts at coloring Garth's outfit.

The first with an orange cape like YK envisioned him with and the other with a dark blue that I initially thought would look good.

Since I hate white in an outfit (especially when it takes up a large portion of it) I substituted a light blue in its place.

Those are pretty cool Scotty. I like doing homage to the original visions whenever possible. I was really tempted to do the Saturn Girl in the green, yellow and black outfit.

 -

You know...now that I look at that again I think I might have to try that color scheme for Lightning Lad and see how it looks on the Jim Lee design.

I like the orange caped color schemes for LL.

Yep!
Wow, that's a VERY different look for Garth. After so many years of the Cockrum "Tuxedo" and slight variants it would take some getting used to but I like it.

Posted by legionadventureman on :

That design of Lightning Lad so reminds me of Garth's original colour scheme when he was introduced in ADVENTURE COMICS 247 as "Lightning Boy"...

That's what I based the colors on LAM. I'm not so hot on it myself, prefering the blues. This looks more like a holiday outfit to me. [Smile]

I tried to get a little loose with technique on this sketch and it came out pretty decently, I think.

Jim Lee's Dream Girl is a hottie. I've missed the "Marilyn" look but it appears Jim likes that take on her too.

There was another version of this done as Invisible Kid so I thought it was only fair to see what a Brainiac-5 version would look like.

American phrases are so mystifying...How can a "wife-beater" be classed as a form of fashion-wear?

Posted by Joe-Boy on :

Wife-Beater isnt a purely American Term. My Closet is full of Wife-Beaters in Various Colours. and Damn If I dont look Great in them. (why am I capitalising all my letters???)

In other words, Joe Boy, u mean a tank-top?

Singlet
Tank Top is a different type of cut.

Posted by legionadventureman on :

I was thinking of "singlet", but it came out "tank top"...funny how the mind plays tricks on one...

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

-heh-
Yes, purely American, mostly Southern I'd guess. It's supposed to describe a certain type of sleeveless undershirt but it's used a little bit more loosely in practice.

The popolar fiction is that there is a certain type of fellow that sits around their underwear all day drinking cheap beer and tossing the "little lady" around whenever a foul mood strikes. They also seem to be popular with MTV style "gangstas".

Working on the Sunboy Jim Lee sketch. It ought to be finished sometime today. [Big Grin] JL sure makes him look like a tough customer.

One more Jim Lee Legionnaire while I'm still in the mood to fuss with those design sketches.

At first this Cos sketch looked pretty basic until I found some hidden lines that Jim had almost erased. Looks pretty cool once they're brought back out.

I like the lines on Cos YK.

The happiest Green Giant in the whole LMBPverse!

I redrew one of the female micro bodies to get a more feminine look than the usual micro males then I shrunk the micro head to 65% and it almost looks like it's the right size. I did of course lose a little of the micro-head detail but I think it came out pretty decent for all that.

Question: Is GGG's costume flesh-coloured to give the illusion of scantiness? Or is the top half all in one piece with the bottom half going for a more "natural" look?

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

Yeah, the top is all one piece and that's all not a flesh colored costume. [Big Grin] Just Bob in (almost) all his glory.

I ought to do like Olivier Coipel did in his Violet sketch and add a tiny figure in the panel for the illusion of scale.

Oh no no no...some of those are Jim Lee concept sketches. He did a batch of LSH designs and somebody posted it long long ago.

I couldn't let 'em stay uncolored forever.

In a way I really like the 'ethereal' Saturn Girl. It's different.
